The setting matters almost as much as the murders. Whitby brings the harbour, the abbey, the 199 Steps, sea fret rolling in off the North Sea, cobbled streets, narrow alleys and hidden-away yards. Bodies are supplied courtesy of Ely. Readers have been known to follow the investigations on Google Maps, and a few have even booked holidays inspired by the books. None, so far, have been found unresponsive on the beach—touch wood.
Ely doesn't write cosy crime, but neither does he dwell on gore for the sake of it. He writes about coppers who are good at their jobs and bad at most other things, villains who believe they're the hero, and the kind of gallows humour that gets you through a twelve-hour shift—or a long-running series.
If you grew up with Taggart, Morse, Columbo, Heartbeat and The Professionals, and have spent the years since wondering where all the proper coppers went, you may just have found them.

Another brilliant book in the DCI Finnegan series. How can just a severed leg wash up on the harbour beach? Where is the rest of the body? One of DCI Finnegan and his teams most complex cases. Drugs, a hidden cannabis farm, missing hikers, hijacked tankers all combine to test DCI Finnegan and his team to their limits, almost to the point of the death of one of them. A fast moving story set against the beauty of Whitby and the stunning North Yorkshire moors.

A revolving door of gallows humour combined with a jig saw of so many twisted plots. Some retur ing villians and dark characters mixing MI5, Yorkshire Police CID and politics. Prysha, Frank, Zak and the ever expanding Whitby team are a joy to follow in all the gory detail of the world of Yorkshire crime and life. An excellent and surprising read with an unexpected ending....gripping stuff.

A leg is washed up and the team can't find the rest of the body.
My least favourite of the series. I found it too frivolous with a character who was no more than a caricature.
I believe there's one more book to go. They've been enjoyable for the most but this one was a disappointment.

Love the latest ECO Finnegan. Lots of things going on but brought together brilliantly by Ely. Old adversaries come back together and do battle once more but who comes out on top. Open ended for some characters so can't wait for next instalment.

Another excellent book in the DCI Finnegan series. The whole story is gripping from start to finish and all the characters are brilliant with the banter and humour between them is great. Can’t wait for the next book

Excellent story poor prisha thought her days were over in the police, then Mansel gets murdered, I thought if was! Kimberly who had killed him but it was the Russian woman ,plenty of action

Harbour secrets.
This book took a while to get my undivided attention. I liked the twists that I thought i had solved only to be surprised.
The guy from MI5 actually made my skin crawl. Great descriptive writing.

Worrying
Prissy nearly gets it but Dinkel does his stuff and finds the drug runners hideout. Finnegan knows something is happening and Prisha thinks she moving to be outed. Not to be and all evidence is destrhed.

Really enjoyed the latest installment to the Frank Finnegan series. When you find yourself reading one more chapter after one more chapter you know it's good.

I have thoroughly enjoyed all the books in this series that I have read so far. Live in Whitby so it was that connection that drew me in initially but I enjoy a murder as much as the next person!

This series of books is absolutely brilliant. The characters are superb. Every book is an absolute page turner but have to say book 8 is the best. Can’t wait to read the next one Ely!
