Keith Miles (born 1940) is an English author, who writes under his own name and also historical fiction and mystery novels under the pseudonym Edward Marston. He is known for his mysteries set in the world of Elizabethan theatre. He has also written a series of novels based on events in the Domesday Book, a series of The Railway Detective and a series of The Home Front Detective.
Published in 2025, 'Mystery at the Station Hotel' is a Crime/Mystery novel, and is the 23rd in the very popular Railway Detective series featuring Robert Colbeck, a Scotland Yard detective who investigates serious crimes related to railways in 1860s Britain. This tale involves the murder of a candidate for the Chairmanship of GWR. As is usual, there are also other less important mysteries getting into the story at the same time. These lesser mysteries are pretty trivial, whilst the main mystery shows too many signs of being stretched simply by inventing spurious reasons to delay the availability of vital clues until the final couple of chapters. This is partly redeemed by the writers usual great characterisations, but it still seemed a lot of effort for little gain - not one of the best in the series.
An okay novel, an easy read if that’s what you want. I read that the writer has written numerous novels, but I won’t be searching them out. Enough said I think.
a quality mystery, with all characters firing on all cylinders. a complex layered story, a good brain teaser and an entertaining read. great job Edward!
