Prince V'sair may have a stronger grip on who he is and what kind of ruler he plans to be but that doesn't mean he is able to keep the kingdom together.

V'sair's evil uncle, Staf Nuen, managed to just barely get away and now V'sair's brother, Zayden, has made it his personal mission to hunt down the treacherous man.

Tulani - someone who both intrigues and fascinates V'sair - must decide where her loyalties lie.

And throughout all of this, T'sair must find the correct path for not only his people, but for their surrounding planets.

But could he do it in time?

This was a wonderful sequel.

I love that the same energy is carried through and while this one was short, it was plenty punchy.

The plot in book 2 spread out so much but also really worked for me. I enjoyed following the characters on their various adventures and moments of mayhem.

And the way T'sair's character continued to grow and develop really caught my eye.

All in all, I cannot wait for book 3!

Collision starts with a John Lennon quote:

When you’re drowning, you don’t say, “I would be incredibly pleased if someone would have the foresight to notice me drowning and come and help me,” you just scream.

Prince V’Sair and his family are dealing with grief in their own way. His stepbrother has gone off to wreak vengeance on his uncle, Stef Nuen. Prince V’Sair is trying to bring together his kingdom while waiting for the Elements to guide him. Tulani, V’Sair’s true love, must lead her people (Quyroos) while learning the skills she was born with. The Queen, grieving the loss of her husband, advises her son to unite the kingdom.

Staf Nuen, meanwhile, is alive (damn him) and makes a pact with a sworn enemy in order to retake Darracia. All those involved are on a collision course and the climax of this book shocked me. I never saw it coming and I was glad I had the next book so I could see what happened next.

When all appears to be lost, there is always hope.

The quest for power and control still rages on as the battle for Darracia continues in Collision by Michael Phillip Cash. A young king reels under the weight of his new responsibilities, the threats that dare to take his rightful crown from him and the lives that are lost in the process. Greed, jealousy, blind prejudice and the quest for power are still causing chaos throughout the galaxy, even as the unrest of the classes cause inner turmoil within Darracia. Until his people see him as a strong warrior, V’sair is powerless to truly unite his people. Meanwhile, his half-brother, Zayden has gone off on a mission to avenge the death of their father, the king, choosing a solitary life to fuel his rage. As these two stories run concurrently, the darkness of the worlds around them deepens as enemies unite against them, including the uncle who saw to their father’s brutal demise. What of budding romance? Is fate keeping two young lovers apart while giving an opportunity for love to another? Will the noose of war tighten around the young king’s throat? Will Zayden’s quest lead him back to Darracia?

Michael Phillip Cash can weave a tale into a magical map that led me into the amazing world he has created where treachery may come from family, friend or foe in a galaxy clearly not our own. In this battle of good vs evil, he has clearly drawn similarities to our own world, and why wouldn’t “others” out there in space be faced with the same emotions and schemes? To his credit, Mr. Cash has given his heroes honor, even in battle, where he has taught them that anyone can fight from the safety of distance with a gun, but it is a true warrior who will believe in themselves, their cause and the strength of the magical swords to face each opponent head on. How often has one read of heroes who often blurr the lines between good and evil? Apparently Mr. Cash has enough faith in his heroes that he doesn’t need that crutch.

I’ve said it before, and it still stands, Michael Phillip Cash’s writing is a testament to the power of imagination when guided by a masterful storyteller. He has shared his vision of this world, yet allows the reader to form each character and scene into one’s own private vision.

After reading the first installment of this new Sci-fi series from Michael Phillip Cash, I could not wait to get the next book. I just knew it was going to be good. I have to say, I was not disappointed.

This book has everything in it that readers would want! There is the battles, the love affairs, the betrayals and the loyalties all wrapped up in coloborations that make your head spin.

Mr. Cash keeps the reader on edge as the young Prince V'sair embattles the roller coaster emotions of wanting his love by his side, keeping his beloved Darracia out of civil unrest and keeping enemies at bay.

If that was not enough, there are the other characters Zayden, Tulani, Reminda and Prince V'sair's uncles who are all dealing with their own emotional battles. The tug of good verses evil is within all and the choices made can mean life and death or...well, I cannot give that away.

This second book grabbed me and sucked me in as soon as I turned the first page right through to the last. Some chapters I held my breathe hoping for good outcomes. In other chapters and pages, I was floored by the character's tenacity and yet others sections, I was shaking my head in disbelief.

To say, I cannot wait for the next book is an understatement!

This book gets its 5 stars!

MY VIEW

Once again the author has done a wonderful job of writing from what he feels. You can't help but love his characters. I believe that's because Mr. Cash makes you feel like you are that character. He paints a picture of the story that has such realism to them. I've read all his books and he has never disappointed me. I prefer his horror writing to his sci-fi but that's just my own preference. It has nothing to do with his writing. I thought as I turned the pages of COLLISION that I was in search of the killer to bring him to atonement for his deed.

The author put in just enough romance to make it even more real life. Prince V'sair struggled to keep his small kingdom from doom without any help from family. Step-brother Zayden is hunting down the despicable Uncle, Tulani is trying to keep her two universes together and during all of this, Uncle Staf Nuen has new allies and they together are making alliances that are far from the good of the kingdom. Who will win this battle? Who will have the most courage and strength to overcome the evil that has set upon them? This is the second book of The Darracia Saga. I would suggest you pick up Book One and read it first and then continue on. As I said previously, Mr. Cash does not disappoint.

I was given a complimentary copy of COLLISION from the author, Michael Phillip Cash for my view of the book. No other compensation took place.

About the Author:

Born and raised on Long Island, Michael has always had a fascination with horror writing and found footage films. He wanted to incorporate both with his debut novel, Brood X. Earning a degree in English and an MBA, he has worked various jobs before settling into being a full-time author. He currently resides on Long Island with his wife and children.

My Review:

The Darracia saga continues, with the next in the series entitled, Collision. All of the main characters are back, and each have their own purpose to be carried out. Each one on their own tragic course through the solar system---some on a hunt, others forming somewhat unhealthy alliances. In the supernatural world things are quite clear its when your in a normal every day world that things can get complicated.

Everyone in all parts of the world are power hungry, different levels for sure, but still everyone wants to be in control. The stories that the author creates take you to a different moment in time and holds you there until the bitter end. Each of the story's he produces have so much fight in them, I'm drained by the end. This one is action packed and full of emotion!

After having read the first in the Darracia, Schism-The Battle for Darracia- I knew I had to read the second one. If possible I enjoyed this at least if not more then the 1st one. I normally do not read novels geared toward a YA audience, but am making a definite exception with this series.

The King has been murdered and his son is having trouble allowing himself to be crowned. Evil forces abound in this one but there is also a whole lot of good. AND if you think I can be a tease not letting you know what is going to happen--Michael Phillip Cash is a MASTER--I am eagerly awaiting the 3rd book in this series to see what happens to the new young king who is thrown to his death(?) in a watery grave and to his Mom who has been sent off to be a slave!

Collision, The Battle for Darracia is a well-written science fiction story that moves quickly and flows smoothly. I will confess I usually don’t read science fiction, so I think that and the fact that I didn’t read the first book, Schism: The Battle For Darracia, may have hindered my enjoyment slightly. I would recommend reading the first book so that you are introduced to all of the main characters and who or what they are!

That said, I enjoyed the story and the way it was told. The characters are interesting and the story held my interest all the way to the thrilling end. Honor, war, families, spirituality, love, and hate are all themes woven into a sailcloth that carries you through this story.

V'Sair must now cope with the real problem of being King of Darracia. Try to continue with the woman he loves. Prove to his people that he is ready to be king. Rescue his mother from his evil uncle (who by the way happens to join with his other evil brother to try to take over). I'm just happy when I manage to get some laundry done and make dinner in the same day.

Michael Phillip Cash has once again brought an engaging fun story. This held me riveted all the way until the end when V'Sair...Oh wait. I'm not going to spoil it, but the end is definitely an entertaining shocker.

This series is fantastic … two thumbs up and a definite must buy!

The Battle For Darracia Saga continues as a majority of the key characters find themselves at a soul-defining crossroads for themselves and their entire planet. The tensions between the social classes on the planet of Darracia have now reached their respective boiling points. Peace talks between the Darracians and their nearest neighbors the Quyroo people have essentially collapsed with the assassination of the Quyroo ambassador. Crown Prince V'sair's villainous uncle Staf Nuen has also attempted to stage a coup to seize his brother's throne, but although King Drakko was assassinated and Staf Nuen escaped, his conspirators were captured and brought to justice.

As Darracia is being rocked by the waves of violence and societal turmoil, certain members of the royal family find themselves separated from each other and spread throughout the galaxy searching for a meaning to the death of a much beloved and benevolent monarch. Shaken by his father's assassination - and unsure how capable he will be in ruling a kingdom that he views as still belonging to the late king - Prince V'sair struggles to hold the fractured kingdom together. Despite being surrounded by many of his father's most trusted advisers, V'sair still feels extraordinarily isolated and alone without so many of his loved ones by his side.

V'sair's mother, Queen Reminda's own faith in the elusive Elements that have guided Darracians for centuries has been shaken to its very foundations. Although she grieves the loss of her husband, she remains steadfast in her support of her son as he contemplates his upcoming coronation. V'sair's stepbrother Zayden has spent much of the past year since his father's death searching for his uncle's whereabouts. He is on a self-imposed mission of vengeance - ranging from one side of the solar system to the other - determined to bring Staf Nuen back to Darracia to face justice; or die trying.

Reminda's handmaiden Tulani is trying to navigate both of her worlds, attempting to find the best way to bring them together. While she essentially grew up in service to the Darracian royal family - Tulani is still a Quyroo - and her family lineage requires that she leaves service to the Darracians to begin training among her own people. Tulani's grandmother Bobbien is in fact the High Priestess of her tribe, and she wants her granddaughter to succeed her. Tulani loves her grandmother very much and feels obligated to fulfill Bobbien's wishes; but she is also devastated to be leaving behind Reminda and V'sair - the only family she has ever really known.

The villainous Staf Nuen has gone into hiding after orchestrating the initial coup. Having lost his wife, only son, and youngest daughter in the coup, Staf Nuen realizes that his own life is essentially forfeit if Zayden ever finds him. Although that coup wasn't entirely successful - and his cohorts were dealt with appropriately - Staf Nuen is still determined to form other nefarious alliances with certain diabolical new allies elsewhere in the galaxy.

However, like the vibrant comet zipping across the horizon, all the various factions of Darracian society are heading into a direct collision course. They are heading along a path that will test the power of their belief in themselves, their planet, and ultimately, in the power of the Elements that have guided them for centuries. This is a battle that will test the boundaries of their faith and challenge the balance of power.

I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. While the plot definitely reminded me of Star Wars, the story was intriguing and highly original. I avidly wanted to know what happened next. I look forward to reading the conclusion to this trilogy; and give this book a definite A+!

In the second book of Michael Phillip Cash's Battle for Darracia, Michael transmits more from the wonderful world of Darracia and its people. Again, with the vast array of characters and their plight for survival and coming together. This is a beautifully crafted work of science fiction that will not disappoint!

Now King of Darracia, V'sair will advance to the throne after his father's death by his uncle, as he struggles to continue his father and mother's long upstanding agenda of making all Darracians equal. With Tulani being gone to the Desa with her grandeam Bobbin to learn more about the Quyroo way, he is missing her terribly. She will be his queen one day soon, but not until she has found her place among her people. V'sair wants to bring about the change that is needed for his world, but encounters obstacles that endlessly thwart his goal. As he pursues his directives, he holds tightly to his connection with the Elements while he battles against the evils that would decimate his world.

This book brings to light a new threat to Darracia and new characters into the fold. Some of the characters I loved immediately, while others I wanted to hate. The way this author forms his words had me instantly hooked and longing to find out how it would all come to an end. However, as to be expected like the first installment, this book left me hanging. I long to find out how everything will come to fruition. Will V'sair finally understand his purpose in the world? Can he overtake the evil that is threatening to ruin Darracia? You intrigue my space fiction boundaries, Michael.

Collision starts a year after the last book, Schism. V’sair has been king for a year in a broken kingdom, a heartbroken Zayden is slowly learning to deal with the loss of his eye and his girl, evil uncle Staf Nuen is on the run and hiding among a king who is Darracia’s enemy, and peace is still far off between the two native species – the Darracians and Quyroo. In the first book the latter was mentioned in great detail, but it still wasn’t the main focus. But in this book, now that it is the main protagonists issue, it is touched upon more. We are able to see more of what is happening politically to try and achieve equality between the two species, and the (many) issues that arise which stop this. I like the political aspect of this as it shows how complicated it is to form rues and laws around people who have entirely different opinions of what is right and what is wrong.

Compared to the first book in the series this is so much better. My main issue with the last book was that it was too fast paced, and it came to conclusions too quickly. Due to the fact that this book was set a year after the last any conclusions made are a year in the making, meaning it is a lot more realistic.

One thing I love about this book trilogy is the view it has on beauty. Due to the fact that most characters in this trilogy are entirely different species from one and other, the fact that they still find each other beautiful for being who they are is something we don’t do a lot of. Something that we might consider an imperfection is what these species consider beautiful, and it’s recognised as such. I really enjoy that aspect.

There are many subplots in this book, so I can’t cover them all. But the main plot is one that combines many aspects – politics, revenge, a dying planet, and hatred – and they all give reason to the horrific crime Lothen plans, the king of Planta and the brother to Queen Reminda of Darracia, commit. To me this adds a lot of realism to the plot line, and also the fact that did I definitely did not see that coming did make it more enjoyable.

Overall this book was certainly better than the previous, and carries on well from there. It portrays the struggle of each character well as they all try to find themselves, and has interesting politics and back-history involved too. Paired with the diversity of the story, species, and beliefs portrayed makes this book a very interesting read.

I was sent the Battle For Darracia Trilogy in exchange for an honest review.

Get ready for some planet shaking, sword slashing, and gun slinging adventure, as the battle between good and evil is about to begin. Another awesome book by an up-and-coming number one best selling author, Michael Phillip Cash. He has shown us, the readers, that his skillful writings has come a long way. And, he has shown that work through, “Collision: The Battle For Darracia,” As the battle raged, the picturesque scenes were very impressive. The characters out-did themselves, and fought heroically.
Our story began with Zayden, V’sair’s step-brother, on the beach of Fon Reni, preparing a hut-like structure for the night. After losing Hilde, life as he knew it didn’t mean the same to him. He didn’t want anything to do with the castle, or royalty, until he found Staf Nuen, and find him he would; even if he had to search through the Solar System. Zayden would have revenge for Hilde’s death, or die trying.
Going from fireblade to gun was Zayden’s next option, knowing Darracians did not get along with guns. They determined a coward only used a gun. But Zayden refused to use another sword, even though it showed great skill, until the time seemed inevitable.
Back at the castle V’sair has been crowned king of Darracia, deemed a planet of mistrust, since it lacked Darracian strength, and V’sair is still waiting for Zayden to return instead of thinking of the Darracians who look to him for guidance. Will the dark force rule, bringing about evil consequences, or will V’sair, through his father’s guidance from beyond, help fill the planet with enlightenment?
Meanwhile, on Fon Reni, Zayden has met another female. Will he fall in love with her, or will his heart stay to the path he has chosen, to forever keep the memory of Hilde alive through revenge?

This is the second in the series for The Battle of Darracia.

In the first book, on Darracia, there is a uprising brewing. You will be introduced to Prince V'sair. He's a young man struggling with his identity.

In this second installment, which by the way I highly recommend you read the first book first, Prince V-sair is still struggling to hold his kingdom together.

Imagine if you will, you were a 19 yr old Prince trying to hold everything you have together without the help of your family and having some of your family trying to destroy everything you hold dear. Here is a paragraph to get your senses brewing: "He awoke to silence, the rich time before the suns rose, when dew graced the ground, coating the grass like sugar-spun crystals, untouched by the filthy rabble inhabiting the plant."

In this book the author does a great job catching your interest right away and then in his easy to read style, you will be able to stay hooked from the beginning to the end.

I highly recommend this book for readers who enjoy Sci-fi fantasy books.

Thank you so much Michael for sending me this book and I loved it because it was a fitting second book in a series.

Michael's writing and world building in this book was equally as good as in the first book and it really made me feel like I was part of the story. Thanks to this and the fact that I will buy a digital copy of this book to be able to easily re-read as well as buy it & recommend it to others is why I gave it 5 stars.

We learn more about the planet, the other planets in the solar system, the species on Darracia along with the other planets and the main characters in the story.

I particularly enjoyed seeing how the love story between V'sair and Tullani developed even more to the point where near the end they were preparing to get married. It was grate seeing how much they both struggled being away from each other and then how they flourished once they were back together.

It was also interesting seeing what Zayden,V'sair's older brother, and Staf Nuen V'sair's uncle who'd left Darracia in the interim between leaving the and returning to the planet.

So in conclusion I absolutely loved this book and will definitely re-read it again on a fairly regular basis.

It has been one years since we last saw King V’sair. He is struggling to be king with no family. He is trying to unite his people but that is challenging since both groups have completely different views on what is important in life. Zayden is trying to get used to his losses but is across the universe looking to avenge the death of Hilde. Then there is Staf Nuen. He is not going to let losing the status of king go so easily.

This is a great follow up to Schism. Action, love story, loss, and the fight to try and bring two people with different views together. There is a lot happening. I fell for both V’sair and Zayden. V’sair clearly loves Tulani but she has to learn more about her own people before she can be with V’sair. And Zayden, he has lost so much that he walks away from the kingdom with plans of revenge. And the ending, what the heck?!?

I strongly recommend you read the books in order otherwise you will be lost. But if you love action, adventure, and a great fantasy world you need to check out this series. This will be one you will add to you shelves.

This one was full of emotions. For me, any book that can bring out the emotions in me is excellent. I really wanted to hate Staf Nuen for what he had put Prince V’sair through as well as Zayden. I felt the anger and hatred Zayden felt. He and Prince V’sair carried the same emotions, but handled them differently. I felt sorry for V’sair as he was stuck, unable to do the things he really wanted due to his position. Tulani is facing some of the same things Prince V’sair faces. She is not Darracian, yet she has lived there and is now trying to learn all about her own culture. Some of the people do not want to trust her. The author has done an excellent job of taking the suspense and questions we have and bringing it up a notch. Just when you think you know what is going to happen the author throws in a twist that brings hope. The tension is left taught enough that you can’t wait for the next book, which I didn’t. I read them all back to back.

I received a copy to help facilitate my review. The opinions expressed here are my own.

I received this book for the purpose of a fair and honest review.

Overview: After Staf Nuen’s failed coup, Darracia is struggling to accept the ways that her former king wished to see, and her young king is striving to implement. It might help if V’sair was to go through with his coronation, but he wants his chosen Grand Mestor and Queen to be around for that. But now, he has bigger problems. For Staf wasn’t the only uncle of his that covets Darracia’s riches.

Likes: Mr. Cash didn’t let this book get darker than it needed to. Let’s face it, there’s nothing worse than having to quit a trilogy because the middle book caused you to lose all hope for the characters.

Reminda got a chance that the most devoted spouses would love to have.

Dislikes: Seren and Lothen were my biggest problems. The first was willing to enter a loveless marriage to gain power. And the second couldn’t understand that power doesn’t come from the ability to cause destruction.

Conclusion: This was a pretty good book. I hope the last one is just as good.

The second in the Darracia Saga is even better than book one. Once again it is packed with action and twists, and you can not help but become attached to these compelling characters. The great descriptive writing and excellent narration (in the audiobook) brings the characters and the world to life; you can feel their sorrow, frustration, love and can visualize the world the author is creating. There is lots of action, sacrifice, emotion and betrayal in this book and once started it is hard to put it down. The many sub-plots, diversity of species and beliefs, make this a very interesting story. It is not a stand alone book though, you do need to read Schism first in order to understand what's going on. I look forward to the continuation of the story. I received the audiobook & ebook from the author in exchange for an honest review

Collision continues where Schism left off, this time developing the conflict. Staf Nuen, Drakko's brother, disagrees completely with Drakko's vision of their planet's future, as do others. His attempt at a coup results in the deaths of many, including, of course, Drakko and the disappearance of most of the other important protagonists. The relationships between characters is so complex that I can't truly give it justice. Suffice it to say, the characters in this book are much like the population of a small town -- everyone is in some way related to everyone else. The narrative strands are alternated so that you as a reader are aware of all of the characters' fates, even though those fates may not be known to the other characters themselves.

When I first got the book and started to read it I wasn't really sure about it. ONLY because it is Book 2 and I didn't read the first book first, and because in the second paragraph, Mr. Cash starts the paragraph out with "He" instead of who he is talking about. No introduction to the character at all. However, quickly did he capture my attention! I was up until 5am reading this book unable to put it down and walk away. I now want to look for The first book and will be excitedly looking for Risen: The Battle for Darracia, Book 3.

This book has many aspects that will attract many different types of people to it, I liked the sy-fi aspect but also the fact that Mr. Cash touched on some very modern subjects in a very unique matter such as Diversity.

Great WORK!

I entered the world of science fiction once again with The Battle for Darracia. I found this an explosive story once I collided with this book. The words could not fly off the pages fast enough. To say the least the author has presented me with another page turner.

Don't hold back ,you must read this book. Of course you will want to read book one "SCHISM" if you haven't already.

I highly recommend this book for science fiction lovers all ages.

I rated this book a 5 out of 5.

I love this series so soo much. I was hooked by the first book and now that I’m finished with the second and third book I am just wowed by this author’s writing styles. I see he already has so many other reviews so I’m just going to keep mine short and give him the 5 stars he deserves. I did read this book last week but I’m just now writing my review as I have finished the third book as well. I really hope Michael Cash continues writing this type of genres. He’s really good at it.

I have to give 5 stars to Michael Phillip Cash. In this second book you see families divided again with the struggle for power. The hate and love between families coming with a cost. The balance of knowledge and strengths between species that compliment each other even when they don't see it themselves.

I received a complimentary copy of this book.

I first read this as an e-book and I was only sadden at the fact that I did not have an actual copy for my home library. The book does have some intense thrill and will keep you wanting to read long after you finish.

NOTE: I'm reviewing the first two books of this series together as I read them one right after the other. Typically, I would not do this, but for the sake of time and effort I'm combining my review of these two books. They are, after all, two parts of the same story.

One need not go far in order to hear tales of a people who are not getting along with another people. Nor does it take much effort to hear of one group of people, or one person, trying to usurp power and gain control over a land which may not be rightfully theirs...whether that is good for the land or not. Power has this corrupting quality. But what about when those rightfully in power are trying to do things for the good of the people that might unite fronts that have been divided, upending very old societal structures?

LONG STORY SHORT
A prince born from the love between royalty from different peoples (different planets, even) must face his destiny sooner than anyone expected when an uncle on one side leads a revolt against his own brother - a king who is determined to make his kingdom a fair and equal place for both people of the planet to live, Darracians and Quyroos alike. Good vs. evil. Tradition vs. a new way of thinking. Love? In some ways this is an age-old story told in a new way with new characters and settings that are put together rather well. While characters are unique individuals, the settings are interesting, and there are elements of science fiction and the mystic that would please even the most die-hard SciFi fan, the plot and writing styles themselves leave something to be desired. The story itself unfolds rather slowly at first, almost laboriously. It is like a movie that starts slowly and takes awhile to get to the action. Once the action is reached, however, there are issues with how it is presented. For example, scenes full of action fly by so quickly that it is hard to know what exactly is going on. I found myself confused during about half of these books....which isn't conducive to an enjoyable/productive reading experience. The writing style itself is also very clipped and efficient in places, while being descriptive in other places - there is a lack of consistency. Typos are also found throughout the work. I'd gripe about how the book itself is formatted (double-spaced), but have been told there is a plan in place to address some formatting issues. A good story with some presentation issues.

On an ascending scale of 1 to 5, I give this book a 3.

LONG STORY
The Good
Here we find a classic story: child born of a union between two unlikely individuals whose destiny will not only shape his world, but possibly that of others as well. Add a social stratification on his home planet reminiscent of the stratification found in India (albeit with only two factions), floating cities, love, and a traitorous uncle and you have this book. It is something akin to if Macbeth met "Avatar"....just add a few extra planets.

V'sair is a prince sired by a Darracian king and a princess from a water planet. He looks different than literally every other individual on Darracia, the planet where he lives. He has a different destiny - against all odds, unite the two deeply divided peoples who populate Darracia: the Darracians and the Quyroos. One problem: he has never gone through the Fireblade challenge. But is the Fireblade what it seems to be? Only time (and, well, the end of the first book) will tell. He falls in love with a girl he has known for years as his mother's servant...but she is more, so much more. About the same time, his uncle stages an uprising that leads to the death of several key figures, physical disfigurement of others, and pushes V'sair to seek out the truth behind the Elements....a truth which reveals more truths which threaten to undermine the planet's societal structures. And so ends the first book.

The second book picks up months after the carnage. V'sair is struggling to figure out how to live into his new role with the people when he was pushed into it before his training was even nearing completion. Not to mention the other half of his being has been AWOL for awhile, trying to lead her people....but will they trust someone who is of them but not of them? V'sair's brother is off seeking out the uncle who destroyed everything he once held dear, but perhaps he will lose his life in the process. There is a pair of sisters who present an interesting question (sorry, you're gonna have to read to figure out what I'm talking about). The stage is set for a rather epic battle. Seriously, this book seems to be almost purely stage-setting for the next book....which I find rather intriguing. Yes, it carries the story forward a bit, but it provides much more background than in the first book. Frankly, some of this background would have been helpful in understanding what was going on in the first book, but so is.

I'm going to applaud Cash for something that I usually nit-pick authors about: the characters are unique. Even in long, complicated conversation scenes I could generally figure out who was talking even without the "he said this, she said that" indicators. I deeply appreciate characters who have their own personalities that are clearly distinct from one another and that of the author. Yay!! I also really like these characters - especially Bobbien (I think she's my favorite of the entire series - kind of reminds me of the baboon in "Lion King"). They are images of flawed beauty in a way that means they are relateable. Good deal.

This is a good story. Sure, some tropes are used that have been done and done to death, but they have actually been combined here in a way that I find rather intriguing. I'd love to see this story done on screen....after the following has been addressed.

The Bugly (bad/ugly)
Good story. Less than stellar presentation. I'm going to rip on this book a little bit because there were enough things that bothered me that, frankly, my reading of these books was a little more stalled than it could have been. I just couldn't get into it the same way it seems other reviewers were able to. To each his own - no book is going to please every single reader, this is why we have multiple genres and millions of works within genres. :)

Anyways, let us first look at style. I can't fault Cash too much for stylistic choices that I would not make, but I can nit pick on a lack of consistency. My fiction writing style is one that is very descriptive, full of "flowerly" adjectives and such. It is not very efficient. Cash's style is remarkably efficient...in most places. In other places it is much more descriptive. The lack of consistency made my head keep changing gears in a way that bugged me.

Second, the plot itself. While the story is pretty good, the way it unfolded left a few things to be desired. It took awhile for the story to get going. So much work was done in the beginning setting the scene that it was like a movie that starts off slow, with all of the action happening in the last 30 minutes. Now, this can make some sense given that there is a new world to explore with a new societal structure, entirely new characters, etc. I get that. I just had an exceptionally hard time following what in Darracia was going on and keeping track of who was what. Wait, how'd that person get across the room? How'd his eyes gum shut with blood in all of 20 seconds? Oh yeah, and there were enough moments where I thought "that's not how science works" that my brain hurt. Blood drying too quickly, people not falling right according to how they were just hit, etc.

Third, there were typos all. over. the. place. Not just the kind of typo where a few letters are out of order, though these were certainly present, but the kind of typo where a sentence had clearly been written one way, then written a different way, and the first way wasn't completely cleared out of the way (confused yet?). Pronoun confusion reigned supreme, as did sentence constructions that didn't make a lot of sense in my head. Keep in mind that I'm hard on grammar - while I can't diagram a sentence to save my life, I know when something sounds wrong. Unfortunately, a lot sounded wrong here.

Finally, I just wasn't that into these books. I read them because I had agreed to, but after the first book I didn't feel much like reading the second one....and now I really don't feel like continuing to the third. I really feel as though this is a good story wrapped in less than stellar presentation. It just was not my cup of tea. It happens.
