Lycaster #2

The Sorceress of Lycaster

Rate this book
“Love is not a token you pass from one person to another. It does not abide by the laws of time, or logical sense, or reality.”

Serafina Bloodstone is a sorceress. After the Queen of the Giants takes her husband, she strikes a deal with an immortal trickster. The cost—her blood bond.

Through her newfound partnership, she soon realizes that Riyan is not the only one she must save from captivity. She journeys back to Hyton Palace to uncover dark mysteries and secure Riyan’s freedom.

Serafina hides her magic in the midst of the Duke’s dazzling parties, all while never knowing which mouths are full of deceit and which cups are full of poison. The line between a villain and an ally is thinner than a thread, but the clock is ticking. If Serafina does not save Riyan quickly enough, heads will roll.

The Sorceress of Lycaster is the second book in the Lycaster series, a new adult romantic fantasy with cutthroat royals, political espionage, and the most magical love story ever told.

Thank you Perci Jay for this ARC!

The characters are absolutely amazing in this series. I love how complex they are and yet so lovable even when they are being annoying.

The concept is great, the world is interesting; the only thing that really lacked for me was the magic system and the first 25%.

The book starts thrown in exactly where we left off in book one, which would have been fine if I had just read book one. But I read book one over a year and 55 books ago and I have horrible memory. So it was very difficult for me to get up to speed with everything again, especially on the magic system and all that happened at the very end of book one that was very important.

I love a good cliffhanger and getting thrown into the story though so I would highly recommend doing a “Previously On…” similar to Frankie Diane Mallis. I love these because if you just read the previous book, you can skip it, and if you haven’t read the previous book in a while you can get totally caught up and all the spoilery stuff you need to know and often can’t find online. Alternatively, Stacia Stark does a great job of reminding the reader about things they need to know as the story goes on instead of doing a “Previously.” I never have an issue picking up her series even if it’s been ages and I feel like I forgot everything.

There were a few questions I had on how things made sense especially regarding the magic system and some plot holes that unfortunately took me out of the story.

Overall, I enjoy this series and I can’t wait to read Annalisa’s story and continue following Perci Jay!!

Chef's kiss 💋 and worth the wait.

I know Perci really took her time with this and rewrote it several times. I can't imagine the versions she scrapped, but this one was everything.

Absolutely fantastic follow up to Bride of Lycaster and a wonderful ending to this duology! I am looking forward to the potential spin-off books Perci might do in this realm next.

Tysm for letting me be an ARC reader, Perci!

The Bride of Lycaster was one of my favorite reads of last year and I have been dying to get my hands on the sequel after that cliff hanger. The Sorceress of Lycaster is the feminine rage sequel I hoped it would be.
Perci Jay does a wonderful job of exploring how misogyny negatively affects not only the women in this society but also the men. This is a beautiful story of trauma, abuse, and survival all wrapped up in a magical world. I really appreciated all the coping mechanisms that were represented by this cast of characters. They all felt so real in the way that they handled their trauma and how that affected their choices.
The book wraps up nicely - NO CLIFF HANGER THIS TIME - while also leaving openings for future books. I can’t wait to see how these characters continue to grow.
I received an ARC of this book.

This is the second book the fantasy romance series, Lycaster. Tropes include feminine rage, arranged marriage, love triangle (kind of), slowburn and court intrigue. There are dark elements to this story, and some on page spice, so please read the trigger warnings.

The Lovely: I loved the complexity and growth in the characters. It was a wild journey for them, as well as the reader. You don’t know who to trust, or even when Serafina is being a reliable narrator. Her new inability to lie, and keep things to herself, was hysterical. I loved how the story kept twisting and turning, keeping me engaged. I actually read this book in one day (we won’t discuss how late I stayed up).

The Mundane: While I did tear through this book, the beginning felt a bit chaotic. A lot was happening with a lot of players on the board and it took a bit of mental effort to keep track. I was also missing Riyan quite a bit.

Rating: 4/5 Stars 2/5 Flames

Recommendation: I received an advance review copy, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. I loved how the author wrapped up Serafina, Riyan and Derrick’s story (with a HEA) and I’m excited to see the series will continue with the focus on another character.

I got this book as an ARC read, so here's my review.
She a big girl. I'm not gonna lie. I struggled a little bit. It took me a little bit longer to read this one than the first. But, for good reason. So much happened in this book that was needed to build the suspense and build it to the fireworks that was the ending. Once I hit just after 50% I think it took me a day to finish. I could not stop reading it. Every time I had a second, I had my phone out trying to consume as much as I could. The character building was amazing, not only in the Female main character, Seraphina, but in all of the side characters (if you can call the side, let's be honest, there's a bunch of bad bitches in this series), and the relationships that every one formed. There were a few twists I saw coming, but there were a majority that I did not. By the end of the book, I was crying. I think everything wrapped up really really nicely and in a way that was a good story not just "happy ending". And come on, the epilogue? I'm so excited for the next book!

“There are always giants. Most of them just live in our heads."

Sorceress of Lycaster, you have truly taken a bite out of me. Have I been on the edge of my seat to finally get my hands on you? Absolutely. Did I think the wait was worth it? There is no doubt in my mind! Perci Jay truly outdid herself with this sequel and I am looking forward to reading more books in this universe. (Side note: that epilogue tease of a future couple had me grinning like a fool.)

I thought the world building was fantastic in the first book and I loved getting to see more of the court intrigue and politics in this one. The character development is phenomenal. Serafina is a fantastic main character, I'm captivated by her complexity and I love her growth throughout this book. I absolutely adored getting to see Annalisa and Brietta develop even further into these incredible women, despite living in this society that’s trying to bury them. To be frank, all of the women in this series are just incredible. Female friendship in a book is something I crave and getting to see those bonds and their love for one another really resonated with me.

Also as someone who loves her mother with her entire being, Astrid has my entire heart. “I loved my baby since the first punch in my womb. I would have climbed a dozen more mountains if it led him to a love like yours.” I had to put the book down because I couldn’t read past my tears.

Anyhow all of this is to say, I loved this book and can not wait for more.

Sending a huge thank you for an advanced reader copy!!

Well this one was definitely interesting. Lots of twists and turns. A lot of information in this book little breadcrumbs that keep you busy while figuring out the next move. While the story was very much entertaining and full of vivid details and wild imagery I feel as if there was maybe too much detail.
Mainly details that had nothing to do with the initial story. Details that are entertaining however they don’t offer up much in furthering the plot of the story. There were a few times that I lost the plot entirely because I was in a scene that seemed to last just a bit too long. While i appreciate what the author was trying to do in terms of dialing back the male characters i feel that their personalities were completely changed. I find that while the FMCs of this book are strong willed and powerful characters they are also at times on an ego trip and the girl power turned into “Off with their Heads”

Overall I would have liked the book more if there had there been less filler in this. It would have had a much better flow and made for easier reading without losing the plot.

But if you are interested in a wild ride with a Giant and a sorceress hell bent on saving him with a bit of an Alice in Wonderland twist then give this is the book for you.

Thank you to the author for the eARC opportunity! Like always, this review is voluntary & honest.

Let me start off with saying that this book was THE PERFECT conclusion to Serafina’s story, as well as the perfect way to wrap-up the story between Riyan, Serafina & Derrick. And I am also beyond happy with the way the next book in this series was set up & the potential storyline the main characters will have! 👀

Serafina’s story was filled with twists & turns, some I didn’t see coming, but her character development above all was my favorite. I loved how she went from a character & narrator who was unreliable, with a manipulative personality, to a character who we wholeheartedly root & care for, regardless of the flaws she may have. Serafina, above all, is a fighter, an individual with a cunning mind but also a guarded heart that is capable of the deepest types of love. Her growth in acknowledging her past wrongs, her deep rooted loyalty to those she cares for, the newfound side to herself she discovers throughout this book, it all keeps you hooked & needing to know more about her journey. I truly think her story’s become one of my favorites.

Riyan, he had me hooked since the first book & I absolutely melted seeing his soft, sweetheart self again. But don’t let that fool you, this man’s soft side is only for Serafina & his other loved ones. To everyone else, he is a dangerous “beast”, untamable, unlovable. But the events of how he came to be, his birth, his childhood, his training, it all made me want to hug him even more. It made me need a HEA for this man THAT MUCH MORE. His love for Serafina is pure & true, wholehearted & deep. He loves her for who she was & also who she became. But overall, this man is good & kind, parts of his past still haunt him, but above it all, he wants a family, he wants to be loved. What can I say besides, I ADORE HIM.

Derrick is a character I was conflicted on since book 1. I never knew whether he could be trusted, if he had the best intentions, but book 2 shone a new light on him. I believe we truly got to know Derrick to his core in this book & I truly ended up liking him. I was also left wanting to see more of him & his story after the events in book 2. His story with his sisters & with Brietta. His relationship with Serafina was one that was never easy, but their love for one another was true. It was one that spanned years & was rooted deep within them book. I loved getting to know him more.

So overall, I truly enjoyed this read & I loved getting to know these characters more & meeting new ones as well. The Lycaster series is definitely a series for you if you love political intrigue & espionage, arranged marriages, books with feminine rage & a feminine who will 🔥 it all down for the one she loves. I definitely recommend this one! 💙

I received an arc in exchange for an honest review

The wait was totally worth it for this sequel. I’m so glad there will be other books in this universe because I am simply not ready to give it up.

This world just feels so unique while hitting on such deep themes that will leave you in awe.

Plus we finally get a bit more spice in this book and maybe a tease into a fun dynamic for a future couple

The Sorceress of Lycaster was a fun and unexpected adventure. Full of wit and charm, the book doesn't have a dull moment. Perci Jay captures us again with her stellar visuals and whimsy sprinkled throughout the story and quite a few unexpected twists that had my mouth watering for more.

The character growth and depth was incredible, especially from the beginning of book one until the end of book two. She took me by surprise many times.
Perci Jay is an auto read for me everytime. I cannot wait to see what she does next.

10/10 must read!!!
Ms. Jay takes you on a wild ride with this sequel to The Bride of Lycaster! From kittens to lioness the story shows the good bad and ugly of the patriarchal society built in BOL. Ms. Jay not only closes up the burning questions from the first book but opens so many new possibilities for future stories! I cannot wait to see where this story leads in the future!!

I was an ARC reader for this book and by god this book went in a turn that I didn’t see. I loved it and I loved that when we were seeing things through sera’s point of view her thoughts followed the circumstances. When she was poisoned with the cupids blood I liked that her thoughts were inline with what someone would have thought with the poising and she didn’t just beat it or act like an out of body thing!

Perci deserves so much love and recognition.
We jump right into the story that we left off from in The Bride of Lycaster, for myself things felt alittle chaotic in the beginning but it all fell together.
We got to see a deeper part of several of the characters, secrets revealed and crowns claimed.
I adore her world building and character so much , I can not wait for the next book in the series ! ( another characters pov)

After the cliffhanger in book one, I jumped into reading this book the minute I received my arc copy.

There were a lot of points in this story where I wanted to yell at Serafina for some of her mistakes. But those mistakes and imperfections in her character made Serafina different from many female leads I've read. She didn't start with 100% control of her new abilities and stumbled a lot with her new life adjustments and internal battles with her feelings. The author does a good job conveying all of Serifina's internal conflicts in a way that makes it easier for the reader to understand what's inside her head, but never in a predictable way. I liked who I couldn’t tell who Serafina would choose till the last few chapters. After reading this book, I have a completely different perspective on each character, both the main and side characters. Especially Serifina's mom and the role she played well in it. One thing I loved in book one is how, in the same way, it related to the issues Serfinia and every girl Lycaster experienced in their vulnerability of being a girl in a misogynistic society. Seeing them all come together despite their differences and challenges to support one another and for the betterment of women in Lycater was heartwarming.

This book played out completely differently from what I expected in the best way possible. This book (well, the whole series) is not predictable; it will keep you in a chokehold to read the next page, chapter, and book to see what happens next.

TITLE: The Sorceress of Lycaster
AUTHOR: Perci Jay
SERIES: Lycaster
SERIES ORDER: 2
RELEASE DATE: 7/12/2024
GENRE: Romantasy
RATING: ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥+

DISCLAIMER: I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

A couple months ago I read my first romantasy and I was absolutely enraptured by Serafina's story! Then it ended on a cliffhanger and I absolute had to know what happened next! I researched and found that Perci was planning on releasing the next book soon (it's set to release July 12th.) She was looking for ARC readers and you know I had to sign up!

This story was everything! I loved the journey that Perci took us on in this fantastic edition to the Lycaster series. Make sure you buckle up though, because this journey is wild and will have you second guessing yourself from beginning to end!

While this concludes Serafina's story, the Lycaster series will live on through the other characters and I can't wait to read more!

If you like your story a little unhinged (or a lot, depending on your definition of unhinged) with a lot of fcuk the patriarchy vibes, you need this book!! Make sure you read Bride of Lycaster first! Also, take care to note the content warnings Perci provides at the beginning of the story!

Thank you Perci for the advance copy!

I was fortunate enough to get my hands on an ARC copy of this book and STILL bought the hardcover for my bookshelf. I know this is going to be a series I keep coming back to over the years.

Perci is not just a great story teller, but a beautiful writer. Every line is so carefully constructed and perfectly portrays the intended imagery that you know she is well versed in her craft. It made it so fun to follow her trail of breadcrumbs and try to figure out where she was leading us, because with the intentionality she has, you KNOW that she is taking you on a grand adventure.

In book one she broke me and made me cry sad desperate tears, but in this book she made me cry deep soul HEALING tears for deep traumas I never talk about. The women in this story cut at each other in book one, but in this book they fight side by side, love and support each other and love each other's demons is such a beautiful way.

I was not sure this story could deliver a satisfying ending for all the things it promises on, but the end was not just a 'happily ever after' but it was a hard fought, cleaver justified and SATISFYING conclusion to a gut wrenching tale.

If you want to be taken on a while adventure that will gut you and put you back together better then when you started, do not pass up this series.

Amazing! Worth the wait after suffering through the last evil cliffhanger.😂 Girlbossing, sweet romance, political drama, and loveable characters. I couldn't put it down. My poor husband was a single father for the two days it took me to rush through it. I didn't realize how much I needed a protagonist that questions her own motivations and passions so deeply and has to decipher who she is and what she wants even though she thought she had it all figured out. Seraphina puts her decisions and past mistakes under a microscope, which is what I need to do more often. I grew to love characters I previously disliked and wished for almost everyone to get their happy ending (except grigory and a few obvious others). The struggles Seraphina goes through leads to a satisfying ending and a beautiful romance. I loved it and want a million more books in this world. Perci Jay is a wonderful writer and I can't wait to read more.

I was so excited to read this book after finishing the bride of Lycaster. The only reason I review this book as a four is because the first book was a five for me. I could not put it down and absolutely rushed through it. It was amazing, that being said I loved this sequel. The beginning of the book felt a bit rushed to me, but it soon fell into a suspenseful rhythm without waiting too long between events. This is one of the few authors where I don’t see the plot twist coming and I love that. The female characters in this book are fantastic and I enjoy that they don’t say cringy stereotypical lines. I also think the author did great job of setting up the story for there to be multiple branch offs with other characters instead of drawing the series out too long. She does a great job of showing that there can be a gray area in relationships and it’s not always black-and-white. I’ll definitely be reading the next book!

This book overall was a 2.5 ⭐️ for me. There was so much happening in the first 3/4 of the book, it was hard to keep up with the actual plot and storyline. I feel like the characters that needed to grow didn’t and the characters we needed to leave alone got more page time than necessary. While I am all for girl power, the FMCs in this book borderline on toxic feminity which causes their stance to be lost. I had such high hopes for the MMC to come forward to do the right thing but instead, he just shrinks to the background and allows everything to happen around him. I feel as though less filler would have made it possible for a smoother ride down the plot line along with just a smidge less aggressive FMCs and a bit less meek MMC. All in all, this wasn’t it for me. I was extremely excited for it after reading the first book.

Make sure you read The Bride of Lycaster before reading this!

Have you ever opened yourself up to love after having your world tilt upside down? Losing everything you’ve ever known, ever loved and still let yourself feel? Because you will follow this journey with Sera and join her on her adventures of finding herself along with saving the man who made her feel again. I cried through this book, because I relate way too much to our FMC. Being manipulative, and soothing others when it benefitted me and then finding someone that made me FEEL again. This book was the emotional roller coaster that I was ultimately not ready for. I sobbed, smiled, laughed, and hurt. But it was worth it. Read it. Read both books if you haven’t. You won’t be disappointed.

Author Perci Jay has outdone herself in this phenomenal sequel to The Bride of Lycaster, If you have not read the first book in this series, go check it out. It was one of my top reads last year. Sorceress picks up where Bride left off. This story will tug at your heart strings and make you want to throw your kindle, or physical copy, across the room.

If you thought it ended at, will it fit, then you’re in for more than you bargained for with this story. Perci immaculately pulls together a vast world history, a unique magic system, and rich storytelling in this fantastical universe that she has created.

Eleven out of ten would recommend it.

Perci Jay has officially made it into my top favorite authors.

This was the perfect ending to Serafina and Riyan's story! Everything I hoped would happen did. There was so much that was revealed! I wasn't ready for any of the twists, betrayals, or heartbreak that I endured 😭 Derrick, Serafina, and Riyan were best case scenario and my heart is HAPPY, y'all🥹

𝑰 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒍𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕. 𝑰 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒑𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒔𝒉𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕. 𝑰 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒋𝒖𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒄𝒆. 𝑰 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒂 𝒇𝒖𝒄𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒎𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒓.

I cried SO much during this one. From happy tears to my heart being ripped from my chest. I cannot WAIT for Annalise's story and I'm crossing my fingers we get to see way more of Serafina and Riyan knowing who they are now😏

“𝑯𝒐𝒘 𝒄𝒂𝒏 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒆𝒙𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒕 𝒎𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒆 𝒉𝒂𝒑𝒑𝒚 𝒘𝒉𝒆𝒏 𝑰 𝒄𝒂𝒏𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒏 𝒃𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒉𝒆?”

I normally don't do rereads when more books come out in a series, but I'll be rereading these just to be back with the characters.

This book was an emotional rollercoaster… 5 stars

In a lot of stories the characters are innately perfect, or have just one or two “quirks” or flaws. The characters in this story feel genuine, they have depth and complexity that you don’t find often.

This story had me swapping from laughing to crying to kicking my feet and I enjoyed every minute of it.

I had found this series by happenstance. Just a random day browsing B&N when I saw the author setting up her table for the first book. And especially after reading this book, I can’t wait to learn more about this incredible world Perci Jay has created

I did start getting tired of how much the MMC was out of the book especially when the FMC finds out things about him without him being there to react, give context or apologize or anything at all.

I was graciously given an ARC to review. Thank you Perci! I was glad to see the conclusion to how Sera rescues Riyan. I wish he had played a bigger part in the book though. The journey until that point was long. In some respects I can understand why but it still felt like quite a long lead up. Once Riyan was in the picture it was just too short. The ending was quick but I did like the epilogue and how it has taken us into another Lycaster story. Overall I enjoyed it and glad to see Riyan and Sera together finally.

I loved this sequel 😍. It definitely wasn't predictable for me and I loved that.

It kept me on my toes. I'm so glad the fmc ended up with who I wanted her to be with. (Not saying who u have to read and find out. )

I also loved the women coming together and can't wait for the next book from a different pov.

As much as I loved sera and her pov I can't wait to see what's in store for the rest of the gang through a different pov.

If u haven't read this yet ur slacking. Book 1 is the bride of lycaster.

Serafina’s journey of love through both books was perfectly done, and every one of the characters is so well developed!
