Nothing ruins a rehearsal dinner quite like a passive-aggressive toast from the unhappy mother of the groom. Things go from bad to yikes when she’s found reduced to a pile of ashes and couture and the bride is pegged as the one wielding the wooden stake.
When a vampire marries a human, things are bound to get messy…
After years spent working the birthday party and baby shower circuit, Anastasia Winters finally has a corner office and a host of supernatural clients all begging her to plan their special day. But following a brush of bad luck, she finds herself on the brink of losing it all. With an ultimatum from her boss on the table, her next wedding has to be perfect.
When the vampy mother of the groom is found dead, the bride goes on the run, and Anastasia is forced head-first into the murder investigation if she has any chance of getting the wedding back on track and keeping her job.
Unfortunately, this is one wedding crisis that requires more than a strategically placed bobby pin or double-sided sticky tape.
Can there be a fairy tale ending, or will it be Happily Ever Never?

Newly Wed and Slightly Dead is the first novel in a new series of paranormal mysteries by Danielle Garrett. Step inside the magical world of the Seattle Haven and see what happens when the magic and wedding worlds collide!
I downloaded NEWLY WED AND SLIGHTLY DEAD as a freebie on Amazon and it was a great find! Anastasia is a witch and a wedding planner for supernaturals. Unfortunately, her latest wedding is turning out to be a something of a disaster. A vampire is marrying a human, the mother of the groom isn’t happy about the two species mixing, and when she turns up dead, accusations fly. This was cute and fun. Will definitely have to try more in this series!
Good story! Got a wedding planner for the supernatural dealing with a nightmare mother of the groom that is a vampire marrying a human. When the meddling future mother in law is found as a pile of ashes at the rehearsal dinner the bride is the prime suspect. There is a twist at the end, but it didn't leave you hanging like most series books do.
I truly enjoy each series and book this author writes and I loved this new one! Anastasia is such a fun character to read and I loved how she handled all of life’s messes. Her love interest, Caleb, was great, he wasn’t arrogant or a jerk and that was mystery was excellent and I look forward to the next one.
After blasting my way through the Beechwood Harbor Magic and Beechwood Harbor Ghost mysteries, I was thrilled the author had begun another spinoff series featuring Holly (Beechwood Harbor Magic Mysteries heroine) Boldt's bestie back in the Seattle Haven, event planner witch, Anastasia Winters.
Newly Wed and Slightly Dead picks up with Anastasia having recently made senior event planner status and working on one of the biggest wedding accounts of the year, a vampire-human wedding for the Vanguard Vampire clan. The groom's mother has been a beast, but the rest of the wedding plans have gone without a hitch until the future monster in law gets ashed at the rehearsal dinner.
Anastasia has thrown her heart into her career and finally made it to where she wants to be, but her work is her life. She has a premiere condo, a closet full of designer shoes, a fluffy cat companion and a wayward little sister sleeping on her couch, but she doesn't have a life. So, when the sneering witch she beat out for the job and her own boss put the pressure on, she rises to the occasion until her perfect wedding is in shambles and the bride accused of murder by the supernatural detective hottie who wants to take her out on a date.
Its an easy quick read, but engaging and fun. Anastasia is easy to like and I enjoyed getting the intro to her world and who will likely be regular series characters. The event business is suspenseful all on its own, but it was fun seeing how the mystery turned out. I'm looking forward to continuing on with the series and can definitely recommend it to current fans of the author and those looking for a light paranormal cozy mystery.
Anastasia Winters finally has her corner office at the most respected and highly sought after event planner and working her first major wedding when things go terribly wrong at the rehearsal dinner.
The bride is human, and the groom a vampire from a powerful line. The Groom’s mother has done nothing short of torture towards the young bride and poor Anastasia. Last-minute changes and demands Anastasia can handle after all the Mother-in-Law is footing the bill. This wedding’s success will make or break Anastasia’s career and she likes her new corner office.
However, when the groom’s mother is found dead, and they accuse the bride of murder, things get complicated especially when the lead detective asks Anastasia out on a date. With her sister sleeping on her sofa and her coworkers vying for her office it’s a wonder she isn’t sitting in a corner crying. It was fun watching events unfold and seeing her handle each obstacle as it came.
The story has a nice balance of romance, office politics, family and murder-mystery. At just under five hours, it’s the perfect listen for a day trip or while handling your Saturday chores. Amanda Ronconi does a stellar job with the characters and enhances the overall story. The book is perfect for audio.
Newly Wed and Slightly Dead kicks off the third spin-off series from the wonderful Beechwood Harbor Magic Mysteries series by Danielle Garrett. The series features magical wedding planner, Anastasia Winters, a longtime friend of Holly Bolt (of the Beechwood Harbor series). While there is a loose connection between the series, Newly Wed and Slightly Dead is very much a standalone, and knowledge of the original series is not needed.
Anastasia has worked tirelessly over the past six years to earn a position as a magical wedding planner. Now is her time to shine with her client’s event being the largest wedding of the firm’s history. However, when the mother of the groom is found murdered the night of the rehearsal dinner, Anastasia may have to kiss her career goodbye.
Newly Wed and Slightly Dead is on the shorter side, but it is a complete and interesting tale. As a fan of the Beechwood series, I enjoyed seeing the Haven side of things, where magic is “out” and paranormals don’t have to hide their true natures. And while the story is certainly classified as a cozy mystery, I liked that main character Anastasia isn’t obsessed with crime fighting or catching a murderer. She just happens to be in the middle of the investigation and her clients are key to the investigation. Anastasia is a solid character - an “average” woman trying to make ends meet and live her life. Nothing crazy or out of the ordinary. Additionally, there is a blooming romance with the head SPA detective. There is an attraction that I’m certain will be explored in the future.
Narration: I’ve been listening to Amanda Ronconi read the two Beechwood Harbor series, and now this spin-off, for over a dozen books or so, and she has consistently done a wonderful job. The Touch of Magic Mysteries is voiced from the first person POV of Anastasia. Ms. Ronconi gives Ana a solid presence, without confusing me as to the other main characters Holly and Scarlet (although neither are in this book). She provides enough differences between character voices to make each distinguishable from the next. Her male voices are generally deeper and fitting and familiar if you’d listened to the other series. However the characters and setting/story are different enough not to cause confusion when listening.
My Ratings: Rating: B+ Narration: A-

A good spinoff series from Danielle. Both the main characters, Ana and Caleb are down-to-earth and use their brains instead of their paranormal abilities to work the mystery. Lots of emotions, drama and the start of a sweet romance.
Cute paranormal “mystery”. I use quotation marks because it wasn’t much of a mystery and the MC doesn’t do any sleuthing; it all mostly happens around her. But it was still a cute, light listen. Nicely narrated on audio by Amanda Ronconi.
My review and an extended sample of the audiobook are posted at Hotlistens.com.
I’ve really enjoyed the first two series I’ve listened to by Danielle Garrett, Beechwood Harbor Magic Mystery and Beechwood Harbor Ghost Mystery). This series is a spinoff from those series, but takes place in the Seattle Haven. It follows Anastasia, a supernatural wedding planner as she tries to make a wedding between a human and vampire something that will never be forgotten, but not in the way it turns out.
Anastasia is getting a lot of pressure from her boss about this wedding. She has a vengeful co-worker trying to undermine her and make her look incompetent. There is also the mother of the groom who doesn’t want the wedding to go forward unless the bride-to-be agrees to be turned, which she is refusing. What could go wrong? Someone decided they had enough of the mother of the groom and kills her and the bride is the prime suspect with no alibi.
While this story has a lot of the things I love about the other series, I found I didn’t enjoy this one as much as the first two series. I think my main thing was the lack of fun characters around Anastasia. I tend to enjoy secondary characters more than the main characters, but there really aren’t any great secondary characters in this story. I also think all the animosity that Anastasia is going through at work left a bad taste in my mouth. I’m going through similar types of things at my work, so it wasn’t escape that like I normally do in audiobooks. That being said, I’m not ready to give up on this series yet. I’m waiting on the next audiobook to be released and I will give it a try.
Narration Amanda Ronconi again does an amazing job with the narration of this series. I had no doubt that she would. She’s always great at bringing out characters’ personalities with her choice of voices and tone. I always look forward to listening to any story that Ronconi narrates.
**I'd like to thank the publisher for providing me with a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
I immediately loved Anastasia in Cupid in a Bottle, and I grew to adore her in this book. I love the sister element to these books – it’s kind of spoiler that I already know how things turn out with Harmony from reading Beechwood Harbor Series, but it’s still great to see her growth and the role her relationship with Anastasia plays in that. And, of course, the bickering between sisters; that’s great too. I think the fact that this series is fully in the Seattle Haven (where magical folks live, no humans) is a nice contrast to the Beechwood Harbor Series, where part of the challenge is always about keeping the magical secret. Here we get to see the everyday life of a witch, working as a wedding planner – complete with all the magical accoutrements. I loved the work-stress angle –Anastasia has a stressful and competitive job, with some pretty unreasonable pressures. Having also worked in event planning in the past (including some weddings) this rang so true, even with the magical flair. That Anastasia ends up so fully invested in the murder investigation because of her role as the wedding planner felt ridiculous, but then also completely believable when you consider the stressful environment where she worked. A love interest developed here too, with the SPA agent assigned to the case. Excited to see that develop.
This was a good start to the series. I found it entertaining and interesting. I liked the mystery part and finding out about the world. although it's not the ending they wanted I did like it and thought it fitted the story well. I liked the way that the events organizer had to solve the mystery and all the fun that came with that.
I enjoyed this book immensely. Not my usual read, but it will be in the future. There was magic (which I am a fan of and am familiar with), budding romance and mystery. All good in my book.
A good read. It just seemed to miss out on being great. Possibly because the motive and culprit was too obvious. However the characters carried the story well and it nice to see the two main female characters grow and develop. But I wonder if there is a story in why her boss (after headhunting her) now seems to have her in her sights? It was going to e the wedding of the year. A vampire and a human! But only if the MOG could keep her nasty, biting comments in check. No-one expected her to end up as a pile of ash! Now the finger is pointed squarely at the human bride to be, the wedding is now going to be a funeral and her boss is really out for blood. Can she do anything to help the couple who now seem to be at odds with each other. Throw in a handsome investigating officer, greed, pride and lots of angst. Will they find the real killer?
I totally love this new series from Danielle Garrett and agree that Anastasia deserved her own series (she is a character from the author's Beechwood Harbor series)! Fun and fresh cover art entices you to open the book - and once inside you find a great cast of characters from Anastasia's sister, to her potential love interest, to her office nemesis, to the odious mother-of-the-groom - I liked them all! The wedding details enhanced the story without overwhelming it. The author has a great imagination which made this a fun and entertaining read! Eagerly looking forward to book #2!
I love the premise of this fun cute cozy mystery. A witch wedding planner fulfills my fun, light read needs. While most all cozies share the usual elements (amateur sleuth, clueless cop, over the top unlikable antagonist... ect.), this one avoided the annoying quality that often accompanies these repetitive tropes. This is the first time I have found the cop character likeable! I didn't hate the Mother in Law! I loved the reference to another series featuring potion witch Holly Boldt (I hope to see these characters meet up!)! I'm excited to continue exploring this world and these characters.
I'm so glad Anastasia has her own series . I'm really e enjoying this addition to the Beechwood Harbor series. This as well as The Ghost Whispered series have overlapping characters. Getting to know the characters in different situations increases this charming overlapping series.
I don't normally like vampire stories because they just creep me out but I have listened to a number of books by this author and really enjoyed them, so thought I would give this series ago too. So glad I did, as I really enjoyed it, in fact I was on to the next book before writing my review. This author has the magic touch and no matter what series, plot line or characters she writes about I just seem to love it and can't get enough. The characters are so well developed and like able that it is a joy to spend time with. No point in the story did I wish the author would stop developing the characters and just get back to the mystery because it's all blended nicely together to keep it entertaining. The mystery is well thought out and keeps you hooked until the end. A nice series set around a wedding planner, which means plenty of opportunities for a murder to investigate and I can't wait. Anastasia has the wedding of the century to plan and pull off without a hitch or it will be her job. Unfortunately nobody told a killer this. Keeping a vampire groom and human bride happy was the easy part, dealing with the groom's mother who didn't want the wedding in the first place, is something else. Then during the rehearsal dinner the groom's mother gets stacked after a threatening toast to the bride and groom and the police think the bride did it. Anastasia goes from planning the wedding to finding a killer, all to keep the wedding on track and make sure she still has a job at the end of the mess. I like the narrator. She uses her own magic to not only make the characters come to life but make it as entertaining as possible.
This one was an absolute treat from start to finish. Anastasia Winter, magical wedding planner with a knack for handling supernatural disasters, found herself in the middle of a mess that no amount of glitter or floral arrangements could fix. Just as she was about to pull off the wedding of the year, the groom’s mother—Lucinda, a powerful and wildly unpleasant vampire—dropped dead at the rehearsal dinner. Literally. Right after a toast. And in true vampire fashion, she disintegrated into a pile of ash.
What followed was a mystery filled with twists, finger-pointing, and the kind of political drama only a town full of magical creatures can provide. All eyes turned to the human bride, who Lucinda openly despised for refusing to be turned. And as if that wasn’t enough, Anastasia had to deal with a sister who turned up out of the blue, a smarmy co-worker trying to sabotage her, a romance she didn’t quite know what to do with, and the growing possibility that she might be out of a job if she couldn’t help solve the murder fast.
The story was fast-paced, funny, and perfectly balanced between cozy mystery and light paranormal romance. The setting felt charming without being too twee, and I loved how the magical elements were woven into everyday life in subtle but meaningful ways. The writing was sharp, the characters were messy in the best way, and I genuinely didn’t want it to end. I’m hooked on this series already and can’t wait to see where Anastasia’s chaotic life goes next.
Even paranormals get married. Which means that they need wedding planners. Well, event planners really but Anastasia Winters has aspired to being a wedding planner and she's finally gotten promoted to the position. But that doesn't mean she'll stay there long. She's got a coworker, Kait, who's gunning for her job and a boss who expects perfection at every event. Even at the rehearsals. So, when Ana bumbles a job (at least according to her boss), she's now on notice. And it's going to be particularly important for her next event because it's going to be the Wedding of the Year. Or at least fairly important because one of the scions of an old and noble vampire family is marrying a human. Which is, apparently, fairly scandalous. And it's a human who may or may not have fairy blood in her far distant past but still. Too bad the rehearsal dinner is such a problem. First, the future mother-in-law declares that she will give her son a fortune IF the bride agrees to become a vampire. And the woman has been picking on this poor human nonstop so it's just one more thing they have to deal with. Then, the MIL ends up dead. Staked. Ashes. And the bride seems like the most likely suspect. A fast, fun, and fluffy book and I enjoyed both it and how it lightly touched on Garrett's other series.
I listened to the Witchy Weddings: A Magic with Mystery Series: The Complete Touch of Magic Series on Audible narrated by Amanda Ronconi. Amanda did a good job, but I hadn’t really investigated what kind of book I just pressed play on.
Newlywed and slightly dead. In this story I liked the marrying couple better than the first short: Cupid in a bottle. The conflict between the mother-in-law and soon-to-be bride was top tier, but then it just went south… I felt cheated out of a really good family drama once the mother-in-law died.
Also, why did we not learn why the bride didn’t want to be turned into a vampire in the first place? I’m appalled that such an important dilemma and ethical choice was skipped over so nonchalantly. And the victim seems perfectly fine with being turned into one of the living dead after the fact, which seems rather unnatural. Again, the plot, emotional depth, and themes are too shallow for my taste. People die but the context is go-lucky and positive. I'm not a super fan of this Glitter Girlboss Clutz Sherlock Holmes core mix.
It was going through the motions at this point and I wondered whether I should just watch twilight instead. ⅖ stars. It was too bland for me.
