Mbera is a book of poetry by Lesotho/Franco poet Rethabile Masilo. The poems arise from the loss, political violence and exile he and his family experienced in their home country. However, some are examinations of life and love. All make you think about how we treat each other and why. I want to thank Rethabile for sharing his thoughtful and accessible poetry with me and the World. Mbera is available on Amazon.
The poems in this collection masterfully utilise dreams, images, utterances and memories thought to have been erased from a family who the Lesotho government of that era deemed worthy of silencing. Mbera is in itself both an act of defiance and eternal love; a poignant symbol of a family resurrected by one of the finest African poets writing today.
In this collection, the poet meditates on memory while the reader bears witness to a body of work breathing with exuberance and life. There is a layered approach to storytelling throughout; we are given a glimpse of the poet’s attentiveness to craft gathered over years and years. What I found most captivating about Mbera is the accessibility of language, the reader is not alienated but instead we are allowed to immerse ourselves within the time machine that is both during and after the turmoil. One becomes so present that we laugh, cry and grieve together.
