The Island King

Rate this book
He once destroyed everything she loved. Now, only he can save her from ruin.
Can she forgive, and even love, her enemy?

In this dark, immersive tale, the author of STRANGE EDEN returns to colonial Nassau to continue the story of Eliza Sharpe’s volatile marriage to Charles Sharpe.
1792: In the aftermath of her lover Jean’s death, Eliza harbors a secret that threatens to make her fraught situation even worse. She is carrying his child. But when the clairvoyant slave Cleo comes to her aid, the solution holds devastating consequences.
Charles, meanwhile, is engaged in his own secret dealings. When he reveals his plans to Eliza, she is forced to do the unthinkable: to reframe the man she’s viewed for so long as an enemy, into an ally, perhaps even a friend.
Perhaps more.
Events directed by Lord Dunmore’s insatiable greed threaten to destroy their shaky reconciliation. Clandestine political meetings emerge as the other colonists seek an end to the corruption on the island, and they turn to Charles for leadership. But the governor of the Bahamas wants him dead, and he’s hired the perfect man for the deed.
Can Eliza forgive the man she once viewed as a monster? Or has the desperation and darkness that lurks within the walls of Pleasant Hall finally driven her to madness?

"You don't know what you don't know, and what matters most is someone's willingness to make amends without expectation. That is justice."
Gina Giordano , The Island King (Strange Eden, #2)

Before I start my review, I want to apologize in advance for any typos. I’ve been making more than usual lately . There is an explanation . I just found out I have cataracts.. I am not happy about that. I am very happy about this book, though!

I really intended to read this book much sooner than I did. But life got in the way, as it sometimes does. I read it over the weekend. This is the continuation of Strange Eden.

As many of you know, I utterly adored Strange Eden.

In fact I recommended it as one of the best books I’ve read this year and I’ve now read over 100 books.

I was very nervous about starting this. Would it be half as good as the first installment I wondered. Would it suck?

It was just as good, and it did not suck!

All right, all right, all right! The main problem I’m having in this review is I really can’t say much if anything. I usually do a plot synopsis, but I just can’t do it here. There are too many chances of my potentially spoiling something. I think one should go in, knowing as little as possible .

Books come and books, go, but this series is most definitely memorable.

As I mentioned, in my first review, part of the appeal for me is the talent of the author in both the deep characterizations and the visuals.

I spent much time in the Caribbean as a kid. I loved and still long for the gentle touch of Caribbean breezes. I got it in both of the books.

I mean I’d be reading a phrase, and all of a sudden I’d be thrown back in time to a beautiful house that I stayed in with my family in Jamaica, or the remembrance of the almost painfully breathtaking trees in Saint Martin Singing their island songs.

It was a beautifully nostalgic feeling to be thrown back in time.

Then there are the characters themselves. See this is where I can’t say too much.

All I will say is much surprise and adventure awaits you.

Not everybody is who you think they are or thought they were and you will have many surprises and many ups and downs reading this book.

The author is so talented especially in being able to drop you into the middle of the plot .

I know for me that is something that I crave in my books.

The more the setting comes alive, the more likely I will like the book.

The setting was definitely its own character here.

This is not a good week for me. My country suffered catastrophic election results and they were not expected. There is fury inside me even thinking about it.

Of course, that’s what books are all about. The good ones, the great ones can take us out of ourselves, where we become birds thousands of feet above the planet, lost in the periwinkle blue skies of storytelling.

If you want to get away – to feel free, and be one with water – to feel as one with the island sun , if you want to get to know some unforgettable characters in a riveting story that is definitely unforgettable then you should read this.

I received a free eARC of this book, and this is my honest and voluntary review.

In the gripping sequel to STRANGE EDEN, we see what life in Pleasant Hall is like for Eliza after a traumatic year. When Eliza’s world is thrown upside down (again), she must do whatever she can to stay afloat - though, on the island of New Providence, it is obvious that nothing ever turns out as it should.

At the end of STRANGE EDEN, I didn’t think I would ever read another book like it. I thought that no other book would break my heart and piece it back together so many times, that I could find another book that would turn me into a steaming pile of emotionally damaged goods. Now, after finishing THE ISLAND KING, I can tell you - I HAVE NEVER BEEN MORE WRONG IN MY LIFE. I have adored Eliza since page 1 of STRANGE EDEN, and all this book did was make me love her more. I think, unfortunately, all women will see a sliver of themselves in Eliza. With all the twists and turns (of which there are MANY), every time I thought I knew what was about to happen, I was proven wrong. Every single page of this book had me captivated, Gina transports you to New Providence instantaneously, as though it were nothing more than opening your eyes. Gina tackles insanely difficult topics like no other author, she doesn’t sugarcoat the reality of the late 18th century - whether that be the reality of wives or slaves. Her writing is poetic and perfectly suited to the setting of this story, and something I will never ever tire of reading.

At 510 pages long, this took me 6 hours to read. I cannot recommend this book highly enough to any historical fiction, classic or romance lover, and I will continue to read and recommend every single word Gina writes until I no longer can.

The Island King is the second novel in The Strange Eden Novels. It is a dark, historical fiction novel following Eliza as she works through tumultuous life events on an island rife with political corruption.

This novel is one with a heavy theme of reconciliation, which brought a lighter tone to a dark novel. Yet, the novel is also full of suspense, especially with the cliffhanger ending. It was a perfect contrast.

I really enjoyed seeing Charles’s multifaceted character develop further in this novel. And to see Eliza realise that their relationship as Husband and Wife is being reconciled. I would most definitely read this again.

Another captivating installment in this Caribbean historical fiction adventure set in the Bahamas.

Again this explores the darker side of the slave trade during the late 1700's, war and battle, however the author manages to weave love and joy into the lives of Eliza and Charles.

I adore following their journey which takes you on a rollercoaster of emotions.

Beautifully written, can't wait for the next chapter.

5 stars superb yet again.

The Strange Eden series is a historical fiction with a touch of paranormal and is definitely a page turner! I sat down one afternoon and by the next afternoon I had finished both books! Eliza is a character that I have enjoyed getting to know! She is feisty, fun and full of life! Charles was not my favorite person but during the second book you see a different side of him and you truly start to see who he really is! Each book ends in a cliffhanger and man what a cliffhanger it is! I can't wait for the next book! Thank you R&R Book Tours, Gina Giordano and Käferhaus Press for sharing this wonderful book with me!

I really want to give a detailed review for this amazing book but by doing that I would spoil it. I think you need to go into this one blinds and believing what you do about the characters from book 1.
This book had me on the edge of my seat and I could not put it down. Again it ends on a cliffhanger but I loving where this series is going.

This was so good. I love that it gave me pride and prejudice vibes while still giving a little magical. Eliza was very much a mix between Elizabeth Bennet and kitty Bennet. I love her very much there were aspects that made me angry but the imagery and work built for this island paradise made everything better. This is a wonderful book. Though it can be read as a standalone. Highly recommend reading book 1 Strange Eden to get some of the back story behind the relationship between Eliza and Captain Sharpe.

This is the second book in The Strange Eden series. I really loved this book as well as the first. I love how passionate Gina is with writing her books. You can tell she put in a lot of time and research into this series. It was interesting to see how life was like back in the 1790’s Bahamas.
I love the way Gina wrote Eliza’s character. It was intense reading this second book. I liked how you learned more about Eliza and Charles’s relationship. The way Charles’s character changed wasn’t what I was expecting but I was glad to see. I loved that there was a map in the beginning of the book. I went back from time to time during my reading and just glanced. Imagining what it was like for Eliza and Charles in such a beautiful place.
I was not a fan at all of Lord Dunmore. Reading about him and his demeanor just made me huff and close the book at times. His greedy character was not fun. Understandably in books you’ve gotta have those characters. I cannot wait for the next book in the series!

Wow oh wow.

Upon reading ‘Strange Eden’, the first novel in this series - I struggled to reconcile the fact that I was madly enthralled by the authors incomparable skill in writing & storytelling, this story line itself and the characters within it, and the fact that I was not satiated by it.

Since reading The Island King (book 2), it is alarmingly obvious to me that my lack of satisfaction after reading book 1, was that I was simply not of sound mind to consume this story for the beauty of what it was at the time I chose to read it. This series is beautiful in its complexity and at times rather heavy - which is something I’ve not yet had to face when reading a book. (I primarily read to escape to places that are softer and less taxing than the realities I have faced/do face)

It was raw, it was unnerving - but it was dipped in the waters of reality, or of what reality had looked like for many people whom HAD endured the misfortunes and agonies that our beloved characters in these books had. And that to me, was uncomfortable, yet it forced me to challenge my own ignorance to the atrocities of our history, and allowed me the chance at deep reflection as well as acknowledgment - which I ended up finding most pleasant.

The Strange Eden series was incredibly evocative & moving, and forced me to immerse myself in a reality that would never be my experience, and is one I would never dream of experiencing - but one that existed for many throughout history. I gained many new perspectives and appreciations along my journey with reading these books, and I especially marvelled at the opportunity for reconciliations and amendments of past wounding and wrongdoings amidst the story line.

I think the biggest takeaway from this series for me, was the realisation that I tend to engage in a lot of black & white thinking. I love the authors decision to reflect societies inclination to black & white thinking, through the different perspectives given to situations that unfurled in Strange Eden, and The Island King.

Not everything IS as it seems, and two things can be true at once. Human beings are infallible. You don’t know what you don’t know, and what matters most is someone’s willingness to make amends without expectation. That is justice.

Thank you to Gina Giordano for the opportunity to experience the marvellous world you have created, through these ARC’s - I am honoured to have consumed your art.

"The past is a very different place, and it may not always be palatable. But it serves as an invaluable lesson to us all."

The above quote is not actually from The Island King itself, but from Gina's words at the end. I chose to use this as the entrance into my review because it applies to history, todays culture, and The Island Kings story itself. Gina has an incredible way with words both as a person, and an author. Not that authors aren't people, but I'm sure you all know what I mean.

I was beyond excited to read The Island King, as I was an ARC reader for the first book in the series, Strange Eden. I was lucky to be an ARC reader for The Island King as well. Both books in this series absolutely captivated me, and made me feel so many different emotions.

In my review of Strange Eden, I said "If you are interested in historical fiction, romance, emotional relationships of all kinds, women fighting for their place in society and life, and the rights of others, this is a book for you." That stands true for The Island King as well. However, not only do we have women fighting for the rights of themselves and others in this book, but we have men fighting for the rights of others, which was few and far between in this time period, and kept under wraps. To see it talked about and portrayed accurately in historical fiction, is wonderful.

We also get to see Charles and Eliza working on truly bettering their relationship on a realistic timeline with hurdles, and not some rainbows and sunshine where it just happens overnight. It takes time and work. They have to communicate and put effort in. They have to be consistent, while holding themselves and each other accountable for their past and present actions.

Historical fiction is not meant to be pretty. It is meant to be historically accurate while fictional, and Gina hit the nail on the head with that again in this follow up to Strange Eden. The way people communicate and act is portrayed so well. This is impeccably researched just like Strange Eden. If I could give these books more than 5 stars, I would.

I highly recommend both books in this series, and I cannot wait for the next book.

The Island King, the second book in Gina Strange's Strange Eden series, truly delivers. The first book already had me hooked and thinking about it for ages, and this one simply blew me away.

The story is captivating and full of twists and turns that kept me guessing - I love a book that keeps me on my toes, and this one did just that. The unpredictable plot made the narrative incredibly engaging and each plot twist deepened my connection to the characters. I absolutely love Gina's writing style, and I think the captivated so many aspects of the book perfectly. Gina perfectly blends romance and adventure, creating a balance that makes The Island King a thrilling read. The romantic elements are heartfelt and genuine, while the adventure aspects are exhilarating, often leaving me in eager anticipation of what will happen next. One of the standout features of Gina's writing is her ability to create such vivid, memorable characters. As the story progressed, I found myself more and more invested in their journeys and connected to them as a character. The relationships are well-developed, with no major holes in their backstory, adding depth to the story and making everything feel more real. The book concludes with a cliffhanger that has me needing the third book… like RN!! The ending is both tantalizing and frustrating, in the best possible way, as it left me craving more. It's a perfect setup for the next book, and I can't wait to see where the story goes next.

I highly recommend The Island King o all readers. It's a phenomenal book that will linger in your mind for weeks after you've finished. Thanks to the publisher for the ARC! This book was free in exchange for an honest review, and it did not disappoint.

- Excerpt from the author's note.

WOW, JUST WOW.

This book picked up STRONG. after that cliffhanger in book 1 " Strange Eden". This one also ended on a similar note: MIND-BLOWINGLY and INTENSElY.

Gina made sure to put facts and get us educated, something she likes to season her books with : educational facts and Historical accuracy.

In this book , I had ( always have, since book 1 ) the biggest crush on Eliza, she was the epitome of resilient and a human/female advocate.

The emotions, the love and yearning , pining , the turmoil, all the ups and downs... You go through everything the characters experience. This was a life experience,in reverse 😉 yup in this book you learn from the past and I quote:

❝𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐲 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐛𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞. 𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐢𝐭 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐮𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐥. ❞

Another excerpt from the acknowledgement/author's note , because her words ARE as MAGICAL as the book itself,.

🍍 Haunting and gripping suspense
🍍 Dark Historical fiction
🍍 Second Chance
🍍 Feminism
🍍 Exotic setting
🍍 Forced proximity
🍍 Pirates
🍍 Historical FACTS.
🍍 Accuracy ( educational) ✔️

This is the kind of series you dive into blindly.
Spoilers can " spoil" your enjoyment, and these books need to be devoured probably.

I can not emphasize that enough.

This book is a sequel to Strange Eden. I would definitely recommend reading both! I hope there is a book 3! Nowadays we think of the Bahamas as a holiday destination, however this book gives us a glimpse of 18th century Bahamas. I do love historical fiction however this book will appeal to anyone who enjoys a good story. This is a well thought out plot, with a great character in Eliza.

I was so excited to read this one as I just loved the first one and had to know what happened next. This one is packed with just as much as the first novel and it was so good! Eliza has to figure out how to move on after the tragic loss of someone she loved and now she has quite the burden of a secret to carry knowing the truth of this secret cannot be kept forever. Charles is also dealing with who to trust and the politics of the island as his life is put at risk as he comes to the realization of what has been going on and who has been behind it all. As the truth of what is going on with Eliza comes out, he comes to the realization of his past actions towards her and knows Cleo has never steered him wrong in her wisdom and advice. He knows things need to change and not just in his household. With his life on the line, he does all he can to prove to Eliza that he is trying to change and wants what's best for her and their future. It will no longer be just the two of them any longer and it will take everything to keep his plantation safe from all the corruption and greed happening elsewhere on the island. Just like in this first book, this one also has been left with a cliff hanger and I cannot wait for book three to come out to finish out the story of Eliza and Charles. I have really fallen in love with this setting and the characters. Thank you to the author for the complementary novel and to Suzy Approved Book Tours for the invite. This review is of my own opinion and accord.

After an extremely traumatic year in Nassau, Eliza Sharpe’s world is again turned upside down in this gothic tale of despair and redemption. As her husband’s business dealings become more intense, this once volatile man becomes more, dare I say, gentle? Eliza begins to see him in a different light, and again nothing is as it seems on the island.

As before, Gina exquisitely transports us to this lush and mysterious landscape where both beauty and darkness live. It’s a time of corruption and greed, but also a time of transformation. The development of Charles in particular was surprising and captivating as he joins in the fight against inequality. It was truly remarkable to witness. Eliza remains one of my favorite FMC; never shying away from a challenge, no matter the cost.

Having just read 𝑺𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒆 𝑬𝒅𝒆𝒏, I was not expecting to experience such emotional wreckage again so soon. Yet here I am again, gutted and in awe. Gina never holds punches when it comes to the harsh realities of this time period; yet one of the ugliest parts of history is stunningly portrayed here. Her writing is poetic and squeezes your heart long after the last word on the page. I absolutely cannot wait for the third book.

Thank you Gina Giordano for the gorgeous copy and RR Book Tours for the opportunity to be on this tour.

I have read the first book in this series called Strange Eden before this book named The Island King. I would recommend that you read Strange Eden first so that you know the story between Eliza and Charles before reading this book.
The Island King is a continuation of what happened in the first book. Eliza and Charles’ marriage is not the greatest overall. Eliza had taken a lover named Jean in the last book who has died now, And she is pregnant with his baby. Charles is not a good man and he knows Eliza will never love him. The writing of this historical fiction is amazing! I mean it is historical fiction, but with a modern twist as I read it. I love that the author had the ability to do that! I really like historical fiction with a modern spin, it makes it much more enjoyable to me as a reader. Charles becomes a better man in the later part of this book and that is something I was surprised about but in a good way😉
The story is super engaging for a reader and I loved reading about Eliza and also Charles’ marriage. There is so much drama, action, intrigue, and so much in this story! I highly recommend this book to all fans of historical fiction! That ending is WOW! I was so in shock and also I want to know what happens in the next book, it leaves things on a cliffhanger for now, so be warned!

The Island King
Gina Giordano
#2 in the Strange Eden Series

Gina! The emotional rollercoaster this book took me on. 😭 After the first chapter alone I was hooked and it brought me right back to how I felt when I read Strange Eden.

This book picks up right where the first left off. In Eliza’s turmoil over her loss. Gina does an amazing job recapping all of the events seamlessly into this book to remind the reader of all previous events.

The Island King is a perfect mix of romance, redemption and anxiety ridden moments. It amazes me that there is always something happening in this book. One thing after another that keeps me fully immersed not wanting to set down the book. Gina excels at descriptive writing. It almost makes you feel as if you’re walking the beach with Eliza. I’m so sad it’s over and that cliffhanger. 😭 I’m ready for book three but I’m not ready for this world/story to come to an end.

Many thanks to Gina for the amazing PR package. I loved The Island King just as much as Strange Eden. Even if Historical Fiction isn’t your preferred genre, I highly recommend these books!

After reading Strange Eden, I couldn’t wait to return to the world of Eliza in late 18th century Bahamas. Yay! So good to be back with The Island King (book 2).

I thoroughly enjoyed The Island King and, as with Strange Eden, Gina’s vivid descriptions easily transported me back to island life on Nassau. I absolutely love the way she writes about the island environment. Strange Eden was a five star read for me, but I did remove one star for Island King (it’s probably more like 1/2 star). The reason is because the change in Charles seemed a bit abrupt to me. I would have liked a deeper dive into his evolution and growth.

I don’t always read the author’s notes, but I highly recommend reading Gina’s author notes here. It’s so very informative and adds dimension to both the author and her work.

With well researched history, suspense, political corruption, heartbreak, redemption, and a touch of paranormal, this book takes readers for a wild ride that I personally wasn’t ready to leave. I will be anxiously awaiting book 3!

Do you love to make your readers cry like a baby? Because my goodness!!! lol
I have to say, that this book is so well written.
First is first. Thank you so much to the LBT and the publisher, and the amazing author for me to receive this book as an arc.
I read the books back to back, so for you to end it the way it did, not happy reader (haha just kidding)
I’ve noticed that Eliza and Charles have a lot of miss communication and never truly speak to each other until now.
He falls first
They get closer and be a family
He keeps proving that he can be the man that she deserves
Her fearful and protective heart melts and opens up.
Just a lot of emotions in this book.

Loved reading this sequel to Strange Eden and became so frustrated when the daily routines of life interrupted my focus on the never-ending saga of Eliza and Charles. I found myself internally screaming "Eliza, No!" "Eliza, Yes!" "Charles, No!" "Charles, Yes!" and continually wondered if it was possible to turn dysfunctional passion laced with uncertainty into a promise of something more grounded, strong and permanent. Enter a protective clairvoyant (we could all use a Cleo!), a ghost jealous and revengeful of a love lost and political/racial turmoil among the lavish background of early Nassau, and you'll understand why this reader was kept emotionally vulnerable until the very last three words read were "To Be Continued."

Thank you, again, Gina, for another amazing read as I anxiously await more!

I was captivated from the first book, and immediately started this one, and was not disappointed.

This book had love, hate, bloodshed, tears, bonds and paranormal activity.. it kept me engaged and enthralled by what Eliza would do next.. a fabulous writing style, good plot and had left me needing to know what happens next! All in all a very good read.

The Island King is a wonderful reading experience building off the original novel in the series, Strange Eden. The author, Gina Giordano, once again delivers a masterful work that was highly researched and filled with immersive and colorful detail. I really enjoyed the return to Nassau. You will feel as if you are there yourself as you flip through the pages. Perhaps my favorite thing about this novel are the jaw dropping plot twists that will leave you astonished and eagerly wanting more. This is a MUST READ!

“You once said love comes when you are not even looking. Indeed, it is true. I had given up. Finding a wife had become inconceivable. I had never met anyone who seemed a commensurate match. And in truth, I still have not. For you are above me, Eliza. In every conceivable way. You challenge me to be a better man.”

The Island king is the sequel to Strange Eden and it packed such a punch, I loved everything about it. This story is a dark historical fiction, and Gina excels in telling it. From the very first page, my heart ached and I felt as though I was holding my breath until the very last. Eliza has been through some truly horrible things in her short time on the island and yet she has a resilience about her that I found inspiring. Likewise, Charles has been a flawed character with some horrifying moments in his own life on the island, though for him that spans a much longer time.

I really love that this series tackles some pretty dark and heavy topics in a way that makes the reader think and question, as well as understand the characters as complex and flawed in a very human way. Had I been in Eliza’s place, I’m not sure what I would have done or how I would have chosen to respond as each new challenge arose, but I love that I was equally invested in Charles, especially since I felt more removed from him throughout Strange Eden.

I cried more than once while reading, and when a book can make me feel things that prominently, I consider that a job well done. Gina’s writing is beautiful and captivating, even when the subject matter is exactly the opposite. I really enjoyed this one and I am anxiously awaiting the third book.

Just as Book 1 was a pleasant surprise, Book 2 proves to be just as powerful, if not better. Total Bridgerton meets American patriot in this one.

Staying true to its Fantasy/Paranormal roots, this installment goes deeper into the haunting “visions” that blur the line between the afterlife and the “in between” space of life and death. At the heart of it all is Eliza, a woman of the late 1700s, who has matured both emotionally and physically in her years on the island. Her journey is marked by devastating loss, forcing her to question whether she belongs in the world she feels trapped in.

Her husband, meanwhile, wrestles with his own demons. Though he desperately tries to prove he isn’t the monster Eliza fears, his actions betray him time and again, leaving me torn between sympathy and frustration.

The emotional weight of this book is immense. love, loss and grief are woven together in a rollercoaster of intensity. I lost count of how many times I found myself holding my breath, desperate to turn the page faster.

This second book delivers everything: deep connections, emotions, a past that refuses to stay buried…Literally. It’s haunting, heartbreaking, and unforgettable. Written like a dream.
Now, onto Book 3 ! I can’t wait to see where this journey leads next after that EMOTIONAL END.

Lots of history surrounding the slave trade and plantation life living in the Bahamas. Great story line and easy to follow. I liked the sense that the history of the plantation through the apparition that would make themselves known every so often. Showing us that history has a way of sticking around. Charles and Eliza have a rocky relationship throughout their story. Which is understandable when all Eliza wanted was to never marry and to be able to travel the world.

TITLE: ISLAND KING (The Strange Eden Series)
AUTHOR: GINA GIORDANO
PUB DATE: 06.07.2024 Now Available

1792: In the aftermath of her lover Jean’s death, Eliza harbors a secret that threatens to make her fraught situation even worse. She is carrying his child.

THOUGHTS:

A historical fiction set in the Bahamas with twists, intrigue, and a compelling storyline that is unexpected, and well researched. The writing really drew me in, and I loved following Eliza and Charles’ story from the first book with unexpected turn of events. The story just keeps getting better and better, and this one left me longing for a book three.

Fantastic gothic historical fiction writing that is immersive and captivating.
