Lisa Black has done it again! Suspense fills the fourth book in the Locard Institute Thriller series, Not Who We Expected, that features Dr. Ellie Carr and Dr. Rachael Davies. They’re forensic analysts, forensic instructors, and crime scene experts. Rock star Billy Diamon hires Rachael and Ellie to locate and ensure his daughter Devon is okay. She and her boyfriend left college for a career development retreat near Topaz, Nevada. Devon’s calls have stopped, and after learning that Carlos’ body was found a few miles from the ranch, Billy’s worried about her.

Ellie goes undercover at the ranch as a new client while Rachael works to learn more about Devon and find out how Billy knows her late sister Isis. Devon seems to be thriving, but no one is mentioning Carlos. However, the attendees follow the leader whether it’s in mind or body exercises, whether they’re dangerous or not. Is this a self-improvement and career development retreat or something more sinister?

Ellie is a complex character. She left her job with the FBI’s Evidence Response Team after divorcing a co-worker. She’s analytical, outwardly friendly and outgoing, but somewhat insecure at times. Rachel is empathetic, a former Washington D.C. medical examiner, and is currently the assistant dean of education at the Locard Institute and guardian of her nephew.

This riveting novel quickly grabbed my attention. It’s descriptive without slowing the pace, allowing me to easily visualize the home and venues for the rock star making a comeback as well as the rural area where the ranch was located. The tension level, unpredictable moments, and twists to the story, along with the action scenes interspersed with Ellie’s investigation, kept me engaged. The hidden undercurrents and possible dangers kept the suspense level high. I found the perceptions and actions around manipulation, indoctrination, loyalty, control, consequences for failure, and isolation disturbing. My biggest quibble is that there is very little forensics in this book. I also thought the pacing was a little slow at times.

Overall, this was a fascinating and captivating novel with great characterization and worldbuilding! There is the right amount of mystery, tension, and apprehensiveness to keep readers engrossed and wondering what will happen next. Themes include self-help, trust, betrayal, deception, misdirection, greed, murder, life of a rock star, and much more. This series is best read in order, although this one can be read as a standalone novel. The author’s note at the end is worth reading. Additionally, she has listed several sources she consulted during her research.

Kensington Publishing and Lisa Black provided a complimentary digital ARC of this novel via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own. Publication date is currently set for February 25, 2025. This review was originally posted at Mystery and Suspense Magazine.

Lisa Black is a new author for me, but I had heard of her and that she wrote well and friends had enjoyed some of her books, so I thought I would give her a try. I'm glad I did as I enjoyed this fourth book in A Lockard Institute Thriller Books. Even though I had not read the first three, it was easily read as a stand alone.

Description:
Dynamic forensic analysts Ellie Carr and Rachael Davies return in New York Times bestselling author Lisa Black’s latest riveting Locard Institute thriller, as they solve a deadly mystery unfolding in the shadow of a celebrated rock star.

The two crime experts are enlisted by legendary rock star Billy Diamond to find his missing daughter. A level-headed student at Yale, Devon left six months earlier with her boyfriend, Carlos, for a career development retreat in Nevada. Her calls and notes became less frequent until they stopped. Billy wanted to give his daughter space—but after learning Carlos' body was found a few miles upstream from the ranch, he needs answers.

Rachael and Ellie hatch a plan—as Ellie goes undercover, Rachael will work with Billy to find out about Devon. But Rachael has a second agenda, to find out why Billy seems so familiar with her late sister Isis, whose little boy Rachael is raising. The music idol is hiding something, but what?

The southwest ranch is full of surprises. Devon is not only alive but thriving, and no one mentions Carlos. The attendees follow their leader, Galen, with slavish devotion, and their daily mind-body exercises stretch from brain-numbing to downright treacherous. If Galen is behind some nefarious scheme, how does it relate to the rock star and his daughter?

To answer those questions, Rachael will also have to Who was her sister Isis, really? The answers will draw Ellie and Rachael deeper into danger. In Billy’s world and in Galen's, the living, the missing, and the dead all have secrets.

My Thoughts:
Apparently this was not the type of case the Locard Institute would normally get involved in, but Rachael found the connection the rock star had to her sister Isis, who was murdered and she couldn't resist finding out more if she could. Ellie found much more that she bargained for during her search for Devon - this one gets quite dangerous. Rachael and Ellie worked well as a team even though they were working in separate locations. Both were smart, strong women who were well-trained and good at their jobs. I liked the excerpts at the front of each chapter about cults and felt like the cult culture was well portrayed in the book.

Thanks to Kensington through Netgalley for an advance copy.

Not Who We Expected Lisa Black is the fourth in the Locard Institute thriller series.

First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Kensington Books, and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Series Background:
(May contain spoilers from previous books)
Dr. Rachel Davies (a former forensic pathologist) is the assistant director of The Locard Institute which conducts research in forensic topics, from ballistics to DNA analysis, and trains scientists, technicians, and law enforcement personnel from around the world.  They have state-of-the-art technology available, and are often in demand.   Rachel is raising her late sister's little boy.  Dr. Ellie Carr, a forensic scientist for the FBI in DC, has joined the staff at Locard.   Her mother died when she was 4, and she lived with her grandmother til she was 9, then with her Aunt Rosalie until she was 12, her Uncle Terry & Aunt Katie until she was 16, then Uncle Paul and Aunt Joana until she married Adam, who she recently divorced.

My Synopsis:
(No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions)
Rachel is asked by legendary rock star Billy Diamond to locate his missing daughter.  Devon and her boyfriend Carlos went to a career development retreat in Nevada, and phone calls have become sparse, and are now non-existent.  He's been trying to give his daughter some space, but the body of Carlos has recently turned up in a damn close to Reno, and he's worried.  Billy is in the midst of a come-back tour, and can't (or won't) head out himself, but he's asking Rachel for help.  Billy knew Rachel's sister Isis, and Rachel is hoping he may know more about her death.

So, Ellie heads up to the retreat, and signs up.  She quickly finds Devon, who seems to be doing great!  But Ellie keeps mum about her identity, deciding quickly that something about this retreat is very wrong.    Everyone is very attached to their leader, Galen, and do everything they are told.  The charismatic leader seems to have everyone brain-washed.  Ellie starts to think she stumbled onto a cult instead of a retreat.  Unfortunately, she can't get cell phone service up in the mountains, so she can't tell Rachel what she suspects.

Meanwhile, Rachel is finding out some troubling things about her late sister.

My Opinions:

This was really interesting as the two female protagonists are each working alone.  I really love their thought processes.  I think they both learned a little about themselves in this one.

One of the reasons I have been enjoying this series is for the technical forensic and medical issues that are used to solve the crimes.  This book had very little of either.  However, the plot was really good, and the author did a lot of research into cults (a topic which somewhat fascinates me).  She provided some interesting information in her notes at the end of the book.

There was a rather interesting twist at the end which I didn't see coming - that was fun!

Although these books are in a series, this one could probably be rad as a stand-alone....which I'm not sure I have ever said!  Anyway, I think this was the best in the series so far, but that could be because I really like books about cults.

Anyway, until next time....

This was my first Locardi Institute book and it definitely did not disappoint! I’d like to read the earlier books to get the back story on the Institute, but Rachael and Ellie are forensic analysts and they are hired by Billy Diamond, a rock star, to find out what’s going on with his daughter Devon. She and her boyfriend Carlos left for an “enlightenment “ camp in the Nevada wilderness and now Carlos’s body has been found a few miles upstream. Billy has been unable to reach Devon and he’s getting more and worried. Rachael stays to work with Billy, to find out as much as she can, and Ellie goes to the wilderness retreat to find Ellie. It all moves fast from the time she infiltrates, and the pace and the premise are frightening!

I really liked this one and could hardly wait to pick it up each day. The way the plot spirals to its conclusion had me on the edge of my seat, wondering what would happen next.

4.5 stars rounded up! If you like thrillers, don’t miss this one!

New to this author and her "Locard" series about a group of forensic scientists, we were immersed in the operations of a cult as soon as one of the Locard employees is dispatched (with little or nothing to do with forensics) to the cult, undercover, to contact or bring home a rock star's recalcitrant daughter. Although there was an unsolved murder occasionally worthy of a mention, almost the entire novel was about the detailed mechanics and psychology of the cult, which grew extremely tiresome. A rather quick denouement did tidy things up, but not until long after we had lost most of our interest in what little plot there was. Perhaps some of the more investigative tales in this set might be more satisfying, but we're not about to hasten to find out.

3.5/5 stars! This book played out like an episode of Bones. I liked it better than book 3 but less than book 2. I am still undecided by this author. I think she has strong writing skills, but her style is too forensic and specific at times. But I like the cast of characters, so I keep picking up the books.

I picked this book to read because I enjoy forensic thrillers and have a curious bent toward why intelligent people get caught up in cults. I received an e-copy of this book from Kensington Publishing through NetGalley. This is my own opinion about Not Who We Expected by Lisa Black.
I haven't read any of the books in the series. This worked for a stand-alone for me.
Rachel Davies is intrigued with the investigation that rock idol Billy Diamond asks to hire the Lockard Institute for. She finds he has a connection to her murdered sister and hopes to learn more. Billy's daughter, Devon is missing.
Ellie Carr goes undercover at the career development retreat where Devon had gone with her boyfriend, Carlos. Billy Diamond had learned that the young man had been found dead. He is worried about his daughter who has gone silent.
The retreat is run by a man named Galen. The author has certainly researched the cult leader characteristics and built a magnetic persona that is controlling and dangerous. (Sexual, financial and feeding on people's weaknesses.) It's scary and sad to see what a person is capable of and what others can subject themselves to. This character and his followers are weird, and his ranting was even boring to me at times. The followers just do what he says. I like how Ellie responds and even shows her own bit of weakness but also the strength in her intelligence and empathy for others.
This is really quiet a story. There are some 'wicked' twists and turns. I give it a 3.9 rating.
Triggers, sexual content not graphic. language, bullying, suicidal thoughts, addiction

Aging rocker Billy Diamond has hired the renowned Locard to find his missing daughter and her boyfriend. Apparently they’re in Nevada at a remote commune/wellness retreat type ranch. It’s all very suspicious when the boyfriend is presumed to have left without Devon. Now Devon has cut off all communication with her father. Billy’s never been a traditional father figure and has all the bad habits that define his chosen lifestyle. He specifically asks for Dr. Ellie Carr, former FBI and a crime scene expert. He says he knew her now deceased sister. That will later open a Pandora box of secrets long buried. As Ellie goes undercover at the retreat she’ll delve into what type of place this is. Is it ligit? The leader, Galen, seems to have an agenda, but Ellie’s job is to find Devon. As the plot unwinds it becomes clear everything isn’t on the up and up here in the desert. Ellie is isolated, cell service is nonexistent and circumstances are deteriorating. An elderly benefactor may have answers but her mental health is failing. There were many divergent characters in the plot, kept me guessing about who was trustworthy and who was depraved. The book has great depth and a compelling subject matter. I look forward to reading more of this series.
Possible spoiler: It was a deeply moving portrayal of how easily susceptible people of any age or background can be influenced. It was a well researched plot, the author included lots of facts and I found it entertaining with a bonus of learning how cult leaders strategize and brainwash vulnerable people.

Not Who We Expected by Lisa Black
Locard Institute Thrillers #4

Big time rockstar has a missing daughter so who does he call to find her? The Locard Institute’s Rachael and Ellie who have been successful so far in this series ~ Thought provoking and immersive read ~ Couldn’t put it down.

What I Liked:
* Dr. Rachel Davies: assistant director of Locard Institute, bright, single parent to deceased sister’s toddler, counts on her mother for childcare, left job as medical examiner to work at Locard Institute, divorced, learns about her sister’s true past in this book
* Dr. Ellie Carr: left FBI to work for Locard Institute, crime scene analyst, scientist, divorced, and from previous books know that she purchased a house, took in a rescue dog, had a difficult backstory, has worked undercover and does so again in this book, has some dicey moments
* Billy Diamond: rockstar, on a comeback journey, addict, loving father, generous
* Devon: Billy’s daughter, college student, victim and survivor
* The look into cults and how they operate ~ Terrifying to think about how they operate
* That I was immersed in the story, felt I got to know the characters, and cared about the outcome
* Rachael’s new information about her sister
* Ellie’s strength, compassion, knowledge, and resilience in this story
* The plot, pacing, setting and writing although there was less forensic focus this time and the story alternated between Ellie undercover and Rachael back at home
* Knowing that there is another book to look forward to

What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* Thinking about what might create a cult leader and how easy or difficult it would be to achieve such a title

Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Yes

Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books for the ARC – This is my honest review.

Thank you to the author, Kensington Publishing and NetGalley, for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This is apparently the fourth in a series, and this first book I have read from this author. The title was appropriate insofar as this book wasn't what I expected. It's blurbed as being a cult-based thriller, but I found the pace too slow and the narrative bogged down in detail - not to mention the plot was very foreseeable, the villains were all but twirling their figurative mustaches every time they turned up. In the final third, there was a lot going on, but it was rushed, as though the author was anxious about getting all the loose ends resolved - and the epilogue was a bit too neat and tidy. While I love a strong female character, neitiher of the two main characters really popped here - there was too much hopping back and forth between their separate strands, which made the story overall hard to follow.

I tried so hard to like this book... but I just didn't. As a fan of cult-centered thrillers, I was extra excited for this one. But it wasn't much of a thriller. It was a okay story for the most part but I felt the author switched back and forth between Ellie & Rachel in inconsistent ways that made it hard to follow. And once the book did pick up and get good (the last 1/3), the story felt SO random and so rushed to just end.

Thank you to NetGalley & Kensington for this arc in return for my honest review.

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this eARC.

Lisa Black’s "Not Who We Expected" is a gripping addition to the Locard Institute series, blending forensic science, psychological tension, and a labyrinth of secrets. This fourth installment follows forensic analysts Rachael Davies and Ellie Carr as they navigate a case that intertwines cult dynamics, family mysteries, and the shadowy world of a rock star’s past.

The story kicks off with legendary musician Billy Diamond seeking Rachael’s help to locate his missing daughter, Devon. A Yale student, Devon vanished after joining a career development retreat in Nevada with her boyfriend, Carlos. When Carlos’ body is discovered in a river, the retreat’s idyllic facade crumbles, revealing a sinister cult led by the enigmatic and manipulative Galen. Ellie goes undercover to infiltrate the cult, while Rachael delves into Billy’s connection to her late sister, Isis, adding a deeply personal layer to the investigation.

Black’s portrayal of the cult is both chilling and insightful. Galen’s methods—isolating followers, enforcing grueling routines, and exploiting vulnerabilities—are disturbingly realistic, reflecting extensive research into cult psychology. The tension escalates as Ellie uncovers the cult’s dark underbelly, while Rachael’s discoveries about her sister add emotional depth and complexity to the narrative.

The dual storylines are masterfully woven, with Black’s meticulous pacing ensuring that each revelation lands with impact. The interplay between Ellie’s perilous undercover mission and Rachael’s personal quest creates a dynamic narrative that keeps readers on edge. The characters are richly developed, with Ellie’s courage and Rachael’s resilience shining through as they confront both external threats and internal demons.

Black’s writing is sharp and evocative, capturing the eerie atmosphere of the cult’s isolated retreat and the emotional weight of Rachael’s family secrets. The themes of trust, betrayal, and the search for identity resonate throughout the story, making ot a poignant exploration of human vulnerability and strength.

For fans of crime thrillers and psychological dramas, "Not Who We Expected" delivers a compelling blend of suspense, emotion, and thought-provoking themes. Lisa Black has crafted a story that lingers long after the final page, leaving readers to ponder the fine line between influence and control, and the lengths we go to uncover the truth.

Not Who We Expected by Lisa Black is a very highly recommended investigative thriller and the fourth novel in the Locard Institute series. This can be enjoyed as a standalone novel, but the whole series is definitely worth reading.

Locard Institute forensic experts Ellie Carr and Rachael Davies are contacted by legendary rock star Billy Diamond to find his missing daughter, Devon. She and her boyfriend Carlos, had left Yale six months earlier to take some time off. They went to a career development retreat called Today’s Enlightenment in Nevada and contact between Devon and Billy dwindled away to nothing. Then Carlos's body is found a few miles away from the ranch in the Truckee river and Billy wants to know his daughter is okay.

Ellie goes undercover to join the isolated retreat and find Devon. She quickly understands that the retreat is a cult and attendees follow every word and order from their leader, Galen. In the meantime, Rachel is working with Billy to learn more about Devon and her deceased sister, Isis. Billy knew Isis and she was the reason he contacted Rachel to find his daughter.

As expected the writing is excellent and the fast-paced plot is engaging and increasingly tense. Both Ellie experiences and activities in the cult and Rachel's look into Isis's past are compelling and interesting. Ellie's experiences increasingly indicate a dangerous situation, while Rachel discovers unexpected information about her sister. Black includes an informative afterward concerning cults and additional reading material about them as well as quotes from some cult survivors at the beginning of each new section.

Ellie and Rachel are fully realized, intelligent, complex strong female characters. Having read the previous Locard Institute novels, I know these characters and their past cases but new readers should be able to easily follow the plot without this prior knowledge.

Not Who We Expected is an excellent investigative thriller and I'm eagerly anticipating another future installment of the Locard Institute series. Thanks to Kensington for providing me with an advance reader's copy via NetGalley. My review is voluntary and expresses my honest opinion.

Hopefully you are a “Resulter,” not a “Remora”

"Lisa Black's 'Not Who We Expected,' the fourth installment in her Locard Institute series, is a gripping thriller centered around the disappearance of rock star Billy Diamond's daughter, Devon. Devon, a Yale student, abandoned academia six months prior to embrace "Today's Enlightenment," a life coaching retreat nestled within a stark, isolated ranch. Predictably, this "enlightenment" proves to be a chilling facade for a dangerous cult.

Black's prose is sharp and captivating. The cult's philosophy, as articulated by their charismatic leader, Galen, hinges on the distinction between "remoras" – those who passively cling to others for survival – and "resultors" – those who actively strive for their own goals and achievements. This "remoras" vs. "resultors" dichotomy, subtly woven throughout the narrative, adds a layer of unsettling imagery and provides a chilling insight into the cult's manipulative ideology.

While the inclusion of rock star elements might feel somewhat clichéd, they contribute to the overall narrative.

As always, a unique strength of the series lies in its exploration of the emotional toll the cases take on the investigators. We gain valuable insights into Dr. Rachael Davies's past through her relationship with her deceased sister, Isis, adding depth to her character. However, I was left wanting more from Dr. Ellie Car's backstory, which felt somewhat underdeveloped in this fourth book.

Despite these minor shortcomings, 'Not Who We Expected' is an enjoyable read. The mystery is captivating, and the unexpected resolution is truly satisfying and kept me guessing. While the forensic detail is somewhat limited compared to previous books and Ellie Car's backstory might disappoint some readers, the intriguing plot, the strong and realistic portrayal of the cult, and the strong character development make it a worthwhile addition to the Locard Institute series."

Rock legend Billy Diamond wants to hire Rachael Davies and Ellie Carr of the Locard Institute to find his daughter and convince her to come home. The Locard is a forensic institute that teaches forensic science courses and can be hired to investigate crimes, so looking for someone is not their usual remit. However, Rachel is a fan of Billy’s and he knew her sister Isis, who once told him Rachel was the smartest person she knew, so he is determined they are the people to find his daughter Devon.

Devon is not exactly missing. She left to join a career development retreat in an isolated region of Nevada six months ago with her boyfriend Carlos. But now Carlos’ body has been found in the river near the retreat and Billy has not been able to contact Devon. Ellie agrees to go to the retreat undercover to check up on Devon and tell her that her father would love her to come home.

When Ellie arrives at the retreat she finds Galen, a charismatic leader in charge, with strict rules in place and some dangerous practices. She discovers Devon, well and working as an assistant to Galen but with no phone reception she is unable to contact Billy or Rachel. When Ellie starts to learn other secrets about the ranch and its’ operation, she finds herself in deep trouble. This is a slow burning mystery with a good build up of how the retreat gradually drew in its’ participants to fall under Galen’s power. There is an uneasy underlying tension as the suspense gradually builds to the novel’s climactic scenes. This fourth book in the series could easily be read as a stand alone. I hope the next book will take us back to the Locard as I really enjoy the forensics aspect of the Institute.

I love a good cult story. For anyone a fan of novels that accurately depict the inner workings of cult organizations, along with relatable (and funny) main characters, and undercover operations, this is worth a read.

I will be transparent and say that I haven’t read other books in this series, but at no point really did I feel like I needed to have read previous books to know what was going on, or to enjoy the story. Ellie is definitely my favorite of the two female leads, and her wit and sass during her undercover operation was entertaining and had me chuckling to myself at numerous points. The dialogue was written well, and the author did an amazing job of making the antagonist approachable enough to make you wonder if “it’s actually a cult” before revealing how unhinged he is in a slow burn, keeps you reading way.

I will say what impressed me the most about Not Who We Expected was the obvious amount of research that went into actually depicting the cult dynamic in an accurate way. I LOVED the quotes from other non fiction novels at the beginning of each section that were written by real survivors of a number of different cults. It really is refreshing to see an author who cares about the content they’re writing when it’s so close to real life.

Overall, I enjoyed the story. I thought the ending was perhaps a bit convoluted, though it still felt like the book came to a close in a natural, realistic way. I would definitely recommend this book to someone who wants to add a “done in a day”, somewhat predictable, but well thought out story to their TBR.

In the 4th installment of the Locard Institute Series, which does well as a standalone, a request by an aging rockstar requesting help finding his daughter kicks off the story. The daughter, Devon, signed up for a career development experience in Nevada with her boyfriend Carlos. When Carlos is found dead Billy Diamond is concerned as he’s heard nothing from his daughter. Ellie Carr and Rachael Davies agree to investigate, taking the case in two directions, Ellie to Nevada and Rachael to work with Billy. Billy is of particular interest to Rachael as she hopes he can shed more light on her sister Isis as Rachael is raising her son and lacks much needed information about her life.

I found myself most interested in Ellie’s investigation into the ‘career development’ group in Nevada. She’s stumped why Devon seems totally happy being an active participant with the group and its leader. Undercover she sees the dark sides of cultism as the leader leads the group in some very dark participation activities. The development of the cult storyline shows how much research the author did to develop and handle a unsettling topic.

Not What We Expected, love the title, was a bit different for me than the previous 3 books in the series, but it had well developed and researched story line, the ongoing development of the 2 lead investigators of the Locard Institute, and of course Ms. Black’s love of plot twists and turns made it a very enjoyable read. Thank you Kensington and NetGalley for the ARC.

This is the fourth book in the Locard Institute thriller series. I have not read any of the other books, but it did not hinder my enjoyment of this book. I believe I may go back and read the earlier books just to get the backstory of the Institute and the characters.

Rachel Davies is hired by Billy Diamond a legendary rockstar to help locate his missing daughter Devon. Rachel asks Ellie to go undercover at the place that Devon was last known to have gone, a career development retreat in Nevada. As Ellie gets settled in at this ranch, she starts to wonder if this place is honest as it says or if this is just a mismanaged cult. The magnanimous leader of the retreat named Galen seems to have his attendees enthralled with him. Ellie quickly learns that Devon is alive and well at the ranch and she is unsure of how to let her know why she is there. Perhaps Devon is there because she doesn’t want to go back. This ranch is full of questionable things and activities. Ellie has to maintain her cover and try to discover what is going on at the ranch.

Meanwhile, Rachel, who has been hired by Billy Diamond because he knows her late sister Isis, starts to wonder if Isis business was on the up and up, and what her business really was.

Overall, this was a pretty good thriller, it was an enjoyable read. There were a few twists that I did not see coming.

Thank you to NetGalley, the publishing house and the author for the opportunity to read a complimentary copy of this book in return for review based upon my honest opinion.

OK, this is the first book by Lisa Black that I read.

First, the good. The writing itself is very good: the sentences, the paragraphs, the chapters. Reading is fast and never boring. The story itself is interesting, too. It centers around a compound in Nevada where a guru teaches motivational mumbo-jumbo to a small bunch of clueless adults in need of guidance.

Now, the bad. Fundamentally, there is one serious issue with the book and it has to do with the details of the plot, such as the following:
- The story of a super-famous musician Billy Diamond is naive. Very naive.
- The entire motif of Isis is ridiculous and not introduced properly.
- Ellie comes to the compound and immediately acts as if she has been there for weeks. There is no structure to the teachings, except for the rough classification into the Freshmen, Sophomores, etc.
- The real town of Topaz is in California, not in Nevada, and Truckee river (nor any of its tributary) does not run through it.
- Galen (and everyone else in the book) is a one-dimensional character. Essentially, the reader is left to deal with a bunch of selfsame personalities.
- Etc.

These details make the flow of the story hard to believe and detract from absorbtion, which is sad because the text as such flows nicely.

My recommendation is that the author hires an editor next time who will guide her literary endeavors.

Still, I do not regret reading the book.

Not Who We Expected, the latest novel from Lisa Black, would be an appropriate title for virtually all of her novels. Why? Because novels like this tempt us to try to guess who did what and why. However, Black’s stories confound such speculation. Once again Black leads us through a world of psychological intrigue with a sinuous plot and genuinely interesting characters.

This time we meet an aging rock star and his estranged daughter, who has gone missing with her boyfriend. The Locard Institute is enlisted to find the girl. The dynamic duo of Rachael Davies and Ellie Carr venture into a cultish group led by a charismatic leader, Galen, who promises his members personal fulfillment and emotional satisfaction.

However, Galen is financially bleeding the operation. A wealthy old woman with declining mental capacity is unwittingly funding his scam to manipulate emotionally needy pawns.

While Rachael and Ellie, our ever-resourceful Locard agents, investigate and infiltrate the dark web of this messianic cult, their characters richly evolve. The added dimension of personal back stories for our two heroines renders them complex, sympathetic, and eminently likeable.

Black’s novel (as her others) fosters unrelenting page turning and is best read in one uninterrupted sitting if possible.

Simply put, Not Who We Expected is great fun. You won’t be disappointed.

I received an advanced readers copy via NetGalley for an honest review.

Rachael Davies and Ellie Carr are back on the case in the fourth installment of the Locard Institute Thrillers. An investigation sends them in separate directions. Rachael has an unexpected family connection that leads her to the rock star mansion of Billy Diamond. His studious daughter, Devon attended a career development retreat with her boyfriend, Carlos, and then lost contact for weeks. The Locard Institute is hired to find her, which leads Ellie to join the career development retreat. As the mystery unfolds, both Rachael and Ellie discover some hard truths about themselves and their loved ones.

I always enjoy reading a book with strong female characters. These ladies are intelligent, industrious, and fearless. The plot line seems solid. You can tell the author did her research on the subject matter and those who participate in such activities. Previous books in this series were a bit heavier on forensic knowledge.

As much as I enjoyed the previous books in this series, I did not love this one. The pace was a little slow. I did not feel enough mounting tension or suspense. I was never afraid for Ellie’s safety.

Legendary rock star Billy Diamond's daughter Devon, a student at Yale, left six months earlier with her boyfriend, Carlos, for a career development retreat in Nevada called Today's Enlightenment. Her calls and notes became less frequent until they stopped. Billy wants to give his daughter space, but after learning Carlos’ body was found a few miles upstream from the ranch, he needs answers.

Billy hires two crime experts from the Locard Institute of forensic research, training, and investigation, Rachael and Ellie. Ellie, an ex FBI agent goes undercover with no way to contact the outside world. Rachael will work with Billy to find out about Devon but Rachael has a second agenda, to find out why Billy seems so familiar with her late sister Isis, whose little boy Rachael is now raising.

The attendees of the southwest ranch follow their cult leader, Galen, with devotion, and their daily mind-body exercises stretch from brain-numbing to treacherous as he helps them to face their biggest fear.

The answers to their questions will draw Ellie deeper into danger as she discovers Galen's motives.

Thrillers are a new genre for me and I’ve been noticing that a lot of them feel the same and don’t actually “thrill” me, more like annoy. This one however really got my heart racing! It focuses a lot on cults and their tactics and the way Lisa Black explored what it feels like emotionally to be surrounded by people who have an utter lack of humanity was anxiety inducing. The “muscle” behind the cult I think could have been utilized more, they kept being set up to be these die hard cult enforcers and then Black didn’t really do anything with it.
There was also one aspect of the big twist that was really misleading and unnecessary and left me thinking huh??
I also feel like the end, where the characters are dealing with the emotional hangover of all the events, was extremely rushed.
Overall a very fun story! I hope there’s some more editing rounds. She used the word gobbledygook way too many times and by different characters and maybe it’s just me but it really distracted me lol.

This is the 4th Locard Institute thriller but the first one I’ve read, and I had no problem reading it as a stand-alone. The story opens with Locard Institute forensic analyst Rachel Davies making a house call to see rock legend Billy Diamond. Billy wants to hire the institute to check in on his college-student daughter, Devon, who checked into a self-help retreat in the mountains of Nevada with her boyfriend. His daughter hasn’t checked in with her father in too long and he is worried but doesn’t want her to know he’s checking up on her. Rachel’s Locard colleague and former FBI agent, Ellie Carr, heads to the ranch undercover. Ellie finds Devon immersed in life at the ranch, but soon starts to question whether there is more going on than meets the eye at this retreat, where the director employs questionable methods that may or may not be aimed at brainwashing the participants. For me, this story was a bit of a slow-burn, but it has strong characters and some great twists!

Wow! Lisa Black's mysteries keep readers hooked on her thrillers. This one is no exception.

Ellie and Rachael of the Locard Institute are hired to find Devon, the missing daughter of a legendary rock star. Devon went to a ranch for a 'cleanse' and has dropped off the face of the earth. Her boyfriend is also missing. Ellie takes point and realizes there's something strange going on at the ranch. Yikes it's a commune with a cultish, charismatic leader who's manipulating the visitors.

Missing girl and boy, cult, out in wilderness; what could possibly go wrong??

Black's thriller captured me. Before I knew it, I'd spent the day reading into the wee hours of the night. Set aside time to delve into this one!

Thanks to the author for an ARC to read and review. This one comes out Feb 25, 2025.

I have loved all of Lisa Black’s books and Not Who We Expected is a great addition to the Locard Institute Thriller series. The story had a very different feel from Ms. Black’s other books with the inclusion of a cult and an aging rock star. As always, she offers the brilliant weaving of forensics. It’s important to note she does the cult aspect very well with obvious research that makes the participants believable and relatable. Often cult participants are portrayed in a less than favorable light, discounting that the leaders are skilled at manipulation. Ms. Black did a fantastic job at bringing such a sensitive topic to light. Having read the Locard Institute Thriller series from the start, I also appreciated having more insight into Ellie and Rachael’s lives, especially the background for Rachael’s sister. A must read for mystery fans!

I am thoroughly enjoying Ms. Black's new Locard series. Just as I did with the first three, I devoured this book. Going along with Ellie's and Rachel's storylines in this installment kept me guessing, and fretting that the characters would make it through unscathed. I'm desperately trying not to include any spoilers here, but it isn't easy! :-D There was more than one moment when I really needed to put the book down to do something, but couldn't - whatever else was going on just had to wait! The premise of the Locard Institute allows the characters to travel to any locale and get involved in so many different situations - I simply can't wait for the next book. If you haven't read the first three in the series, it's ok, you won't be lost. The book stands on its own very well, but why deprive yourself? Get all 4 books and go on a reading vacation!

Legendary rock star Billy Diamond hires the Locard Institute to find his daughter who is supposedly at a career enhancement facility in Nevada and has cut off any communication with him. He asks for Ellie Carr, claiming he knew her deceased sister Isis. When Ellie arrives, she quickly learns that the facility is basically a cult and the enigmatic leader Galen is not someone to mess with. Billy is clearly hiding something, but will Ellie figure it out in time to save his daughter?

Not my favorite in the series. The story bogged down in places because of details about cult behaviors, but it was well-researched and I learned a lot about how easy it is to manipulate people.

Thanks to NetGalley and Kensington for an early copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
