The story was pretty good. However, I'm still thinking about some of the ethics issues that weren't addressed. The conflict of interest stuff with the lawyer. Especially-who killed the lady. Did I miss it? Anyway, see what you think. 3.5 stars.
This was an absolutely fantastic read! What started off as a hook up between "Leah" and "Captain Matt" would become so much more. What happens when their true identities are revealed? When their everyday lives cross paths? Throughout this book Maddox and Talia will take you on a journey in their professional and personal lives that at times will leave you breathless, speechless, shocked, angry, sad, elated, excited, grateful and even humbled. This book should not be missed!
Talia, the new lawyer, and Maddox, the seasoned detective, are the main characters in this captivating story. Their journey to love is a rollercoaster of emotions, from doubt to lust to love, all set against the backdrop of intriguing circumstances.
I was deeply moved by Talia! Her steadfast determination, openness, and genuine compassion were truly inspiring, and she was resolute in pursuing her dreams in all aspects of her life. Maddox selflessly devoted his life to being the provider and protector for his family, always putting their needs before his own. I was thoroughly impressed by the pacing of the story. The relationship between Talia and Maddox unfolded effortlessly, drawing me into their world from the prologue to the epilogue. I was particularly drawn to the development of their relationship with each other and the secondary characters in the story. “Burden of Love” emphasizes the power of love. If it’s destined to be, it will be, regardless of any obstacles or individuals in the way. Fate has a remarkable ability to bring people together, no matter what.
Talia & Maddox was adorable in the beginning. Just starting out as a lawyer trying to prove herself at her family firm. A detective just making it through the shift with everything else on your shoulders. Then add in trying to have somewhat of a love life. But after awhile I was with Talia’s bestfriend. Like girl what’re we doingggg?! You’re a lawyer for Christ sake! And my guy!!! Please! Babyyyy! When that intuition kick in! You better listen! That thing came for Talia HARD! I really did not see this going well at all. 😂
This story really took me through my own emotions. It had a little of everything and the flow of it all was perfect. It wasn’t rushed, there wasn’t meaningless scenes to just fill holes. It was really well crafted.
Mya really captured how we can sacrifice for love. Whether it be ourselves, our careers or the love itself.
If you need a little forbidden love and fate this is for you!

I received this ARC via NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion.
I really did enjoy this book. It’s one that has you hooked from page one. The plot was very enticing. I love a little bit of mystery in a love story. There were times that Maddox really annoyed me but in the end he did the right thing. Talia knew exactly what she wanted and went for it unapologetically! The spice in this story was AMAZING. I think the only thing that would have made this story better is if we would have had more chapters of their dating prior to the two month time jump. I’ve never read anything from this author before but I plan to read a lot more if all her writings are like this one.
When the book started, I found the story and character development to be at a good pace, However, I felt that it all slowed down too much for me. The pace only started to pick back up after Talia realized he Maddox was the lead detective on her high profile case. I liked the characters but were a bit fluffy for me. Just like with other things in life, everything isn't for everybody. I am sure there are those that loved this book. I have read other works by the author that I enjoyed. Thank you Netgalley and Mia Black for the opportunity to read this ARC.
Lawyer Talia Tate and Detective Mattox Reed come head-to-head at the front of a major controversial trial.
Behind closed doors, prior to the trial, Talia and Mattox discreetly met one another and had an instant connection without reveling what they each do for work. Come to find out, they are at the opposite ends of the law! How is this going to work? Can the relationship survive or will the burden of love be too hard to bear for them?
The plot is very engaging and I ate this book right up in anticipation on how things would work out. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and loved the spice. Definitely interested in reading more by this author.

My Take: Upon revisiting the synopsis, I'd say it's "close, but no cigar." What's essential to understand is that a no-strings-attached stress reliever evolves into something deeper until reality sets in. Maddox and Talia are then faced with the question of whether their connection can endure in the real world and stand the test of time. The story transitions from instant lust to instant love. At times, it seemed the narrative might veer into thriller territory, but it swiftly returned to its romantic roots. Overall, it was an enjoyable read and excellent for stimulating book club conversations. Score rounded up.
This book is expected to publish on February 25, 2025. I received an advanced copy from Netgalley-thank you!
Thank you to NetGalley and Black Odyssey Media for the ARC. This was only my third time reading a forbidden romance and it’s quickly becoming one of my favorite tropes. In the beginning of the book there is a case of mistaken identity and a young man is arrested for a crime he didn’t commit. This case will end up making or breaking the couple and they have no idea. The characters met through an app for seggs but ended up connecting on a deeper level. Both were only expecting a one night stand but try their hand at dating. They live in the new lovers bubble until it all comes to a head. She’s a fresh out of law school first year lawyer wanting to prove she’s more than a nepo baby at daddy’s firm and he’s a decorated detective with a shady background. Throughout the case love, law and loyalties are tested all while trying to make their way back to each other. Talia wasn’t my favorite but she turns it around at the end of the book. Maddox wasn’t definitely my kind of book bae, strong and doing whatever it takes to make sure his family is straight. Mya is quickly becoming one of my new favorites authors! I love forward to reading more from her!!

Online hookup turned into a relationship between two strangers whose unknown careers crossed paths. Talia a rising attorney in her father’s law firm, Maddox a seasoned police detective with ties to some corrupt people try to navigate their relationship and feelings when they find themselves on opposing sides.
This world wind romance came with some ups & downs, wins & loses, lots of spice, second chances, and an unexpected pregnancy.
This was a good read. Characters where written well, enjoyed the back story of why Maddox went into law enforcement, and loved the epilogue. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I would recommend 10/10 Spice 🌶️🌶️🌶️
I received this book as a ARC from Net Gallery. I love all Mya's work, so I knew this would be no different. Talia just passed the bar and looking for someone to have fun with. Maddox has the stress of family and work on his back and looking to blow of some steam. Their chemistry is Amazing from the first encounter. When they finally found out each other's real name and what they do for a living, will their love keep them together and separate them for good. Mya your pen is Amazing, you will always have a supporter in me.
This was a pretty good story. It started a little slow to me and I couldn’t really feel the chemistry between Talia and Maddox off the page, but I enjoyed their journey towards happily ever after nonetheless. I liked these two together and I liked that everything worked out for them in the end. 3.5/5 stars
I initially wanted to rate this a 3.5 star but the plot was really good.. the timeline was just too FAST.
You have a new lawyer, working at her family’s firm & the lead detective of her biggest case. They met under unique circumstances and fell in love before they understood the full picture and how it could impact their careers. But Maddox was not willing to lose Talia. No matter the costs. I loved how he loves her.
I understood Talia’s initial concerns but they could have worked something out until the case was over. I think she was scared of her feelings especially since it all happened so quickly. Plus her friend’s comments about her relationship made her question her judgement. But honestly, she should have known better.
Maddox was mad at how Talia ended things but could he blame her? Was he really the man she needed at that time? Good Sunday read!
I requested this book from NetGalley to read and review. It did not disappoint. Mya wrote an amazing story. Talia and Maddox's love story was beautiful, but there were plenty of bumps in the road. Talia was so headstrong and determined to put her new career above everything. Maddox was trying to do his job while providing for his family. Neither were looking for love but found it with each other. They were able to live in their happiness bubble until an incident happened that burst it. Talia was determined she couldn't be with Maddox after this incident, but Maddox was determined to get his woman back. This story had me intrigued from beginning to end. I couldn't believe the mess Maddox got himself in. However, he was able to get out of it. Talia pissed me off a little bit, but I understood it. Talia's mom and brother gave her the best advice on how to handle the situation. I'm glad she got out of her way to get her happy ending.
3 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ stars!! This story follows Talia Tate, a newly minted lawyer trying to prove herself in a high-stakes case that puts her on a collision course with a tough, rule-bending detective. Sparks fly, professionally and otherwise, as they clash in and out of the courtroom.
This book blends legal drama, slow-burn tension, and emotional stakes, all wrapped in a story about justice, loyalty, and unexpected connection.
Thank you Black Odyssey Media and NetGalley for the eARC of this book! I really enjoyed this book! This is the first book I’ve read of Mya’s and it definitely won’t be my last.
EMOTIONAL ROLLER COASTER with a happy ending. To be a fly on the wall would be an understatement but Ms. Mya did her thing. She really made you feel connected with the two main characters in this story. Given the weight of each of their professions, it didn’t seem possible for the two of them to connect. With time and persistence everything came together beautifully. I loved the way that Mya went into depth and introduced their family members, so you could have a better understanding of them and their reasonings behind their actions. If you want an unpredictable love story between 2 strangers who were able to hide their identity to secure the feelings they felt were true, this book is for you!!! This book had just enough spice, drama and the dialogue was easy to follow. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would definitely read this again and again! I am rating this a Five star and I can’t wait until it’s available for purchase on February 25,2025.
I loved how this book jumped right into the drama! So many twist and turns, just as soon as you think you what was going to happen it took another twist. Giving me a Reasonable Doubt in written format. Please be prepared to be left on a cliffhanger!!
MYA's "Burden of Love" is a compelling legal drama infused with a potent romantic tension, centering on the high-stakes collision of justice and undeniable attraction. The story immediately draws you into the courtroom drama, setting a gripping pace from the outset.
We are introduced to Talia Tate, a brilliant young lawyer freshly passed the bar, eager to prove her mettle within her father's prestigious firm, Tate & Associates. Her first major challenge is the controversial State V. Duncan trial, where she finds herself directly opposing Detective Maddox Reed. Maddox is a seasoned, no-nonsense investigator, known for his efficient, if sometimes unconventional, methods. Their professional clash is electric, fueled by their differing approaches to justice and an undeniable, simmering chemistry that complicates everything.
The book excels at creating a dynamic and fast-paced narrative, with twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat, much like a gripping legal thriller. The development of Talia and Maddox's relationship is a central focus, evolving from initial doubt and professional rivalry to a powerful, passionate connection. Talia's steadfast determination and compassion are truly inspiring, while Maddox's commitment to protecting his family and his willingness to evolve for Talia add significant depth to his character. The effortless unfolding of their romance, even amidst polarizing circumstances, is a highlight.
However, the story does present some ethical considerations that might leave readers pondering. The inherent conflict of interest in Talia and Maddox's relationship, given their opposing roles in a high-profile case, is a significant hurdle they navigate. While their personal connection drives much of the narrative, some readers might find themselves wishing for a deeper exploration of the professional ramifications and ethical dilemmas that such a situation would entail. Additionally, the central mystery of "who killed the lady" provides a strong hook, and while the book delivers on drama, it leaves you on a significant cliffhanger, demanding anticipation for the next installment.
In conclusion, "Burden of Love" is a captivating read that dives headfirst into a passionate romance set against a dramatic legal backdrop. It's a story of love's power to transcend obstacles, even when those obstacles involve the very foundations of law and personal ethics. Despite leaving some ethical questions lingering, the book's engaging characters and thrilling plot make it a worthwhile read for fans of romantic suspense.
Rating: 3.5/5 stars
My Rating System: 1⭐️: The book didn’t hold my interest and/or had significant issues that overshadowed any redeeming qualities for me, but generally not my cup of tea. Most likely did not finish the book. 2⭐️: The book didn’t quite resonate with me, and while my experience wasn’t remarkable, I did finish it. It had some redeeming qualities and potential but fell short in execution. Recommendable, though with some reservations. 3⭐️: Good read, but didn’t quite stand out. Still worth recommending to others. 4⭐️: Really enjoyed it and stayed engaged throughout. Would read the book again. Definitely recommendable. 5⭐️: Incredible writing that made me deeply connect with the characters. I was completely absorbed in the world and didn’t want it to end. This book stayed with me even when I wasn’t reading it. I'd gladly reread it and highly recommend it to everyone!
I was a little over halfway through this book and a friend asked me what it was about. I described it to him and he said "yeah, I'd definitely watch a movie on that." Although my initial interest in the book was the romance I was really intrigued about how they ended up on different sides of the law given the racially charged nature of the case.
Talia is fresh out of law school ready to work at her father's firm. She's worked hard for her accomplishments and is focused at being the best in her field. All that hard work and focus leaves her little time for romance...in comes a dating app. Maddox has a lot on his plate. He is the sole financial provider for his sick mother who requires a lot of financial assistance. He became a detective to do good in the world but found himself doing questionable things in order to make sure his family is secure. With all the time he dedicates to work he also has no time for romance...in comes a dating app. The dating app uses aliases and is mainly used for hook ups so no further personal information is needed. Talia and Maddox hit it off immediately and what was supposed to be a one night stand turns into a romance moving at the speed of light. They are living in new relationship bliss and everything is going right. They agree that once they have been together for a few months they'll take the plunge into disclosing last names and occupations. That plan is shattered when Talia sees Maddox giving a press conference as the lead detective on a wrongful arrest case of young Black teenager. Her firm has been hired to defend the teenager and this case could make or break her career.
Mya did a great job writing about the struggle Talia was going through trying to decide if her heart was more important than the career she's worked so hard for. She's always been the girl that has a plan. She's always been the girl to make her parents proud. Her mind tells her that Maddox is on the wrong team defending the arrest but her heart can't seem to let him go. Although Maddox did make me mad a few times, I really appreciated that he refused to let Talia throw away what they had. He got so mad at her for questioning his character and the person he was but he had essentially been a "dirty" cop for quite some time. He was determined to get himself together to be the kind of man worthy of Talia and I was rooting for that.
The reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 was that I feel some parts of the story's conclusion was a little anticlimactic. He faced no blowback from turning on his fellow cop and I am still unclear as to how everything he did was to be swept under the rug after he decided to part ways with his job. Also, he was under the control of a major crime boss and was able to walk away from any repercussions after saying he was quitting and giving over less than shocking "insider information."
Overall, it was still a good read and one that I would recommend.
🆀🆄🅸🅲🅺 🆃🅷🅾🆄🅶🅷🆃🆂 𝐁𝐮𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐋𝐨𝐯𝐞 by Mya was a story of love, sacrifice, loyalty, determination, self-realization, giving back to one’s community, and the meaning of true forgiveness.
In 𝐁𝐮𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐋𝐨𝐯𝐞 we meet Talia, a new attorney who has just been given a job as an associate at her father’s law firm. Talia’s lifelong dream has always been to be an attorney and to be the hope for the hopeless and the defender of the helpless. She has devoted years of blood, sweat, and tears to this endeavor and love and relationships have always taken a backseat in her life. But what happens when a one-night stand turns to more and the man of her dreams enters her life at the most unexpected and inopportune time? What happens when his secrets are revealed, and sides must be taken? Will Talia choose love over loyalty & duty?
I have to say that this book was so much more than what I expected it to be. It was more than just a story of black love. It discussed so many relevant and important topics that are vital to the black community and its current survival. From the very first page, I was drawn in and the prologue was so well-written that I immediately wanted to jump into the story. This was an action-packed page-turner that was easy to read, with great world building, great characters, and an inspirational plot & hopeful ending. It was so good that I was able to finish it all in one day!
In 𝐁𝐮𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐋𝐨𝐯𝐞, we not only see how two individuals are forced to navigate life and love when outside forces that are out of their control, threaten to end their love before it even really beings, but we are also taken into a world, much like the one we are currently living in, where we learn that justice was never really blind, fair, equal, or impartial and “all men being equal in the eyes of the law” is not a true reality. I applaud the author for choosing to explore this topic and for doing so in an honest, respectful, and fearless way.
The main characters, Talia and Maddox were very well written. I loved Talia’s drive, motivation, and determination. Though she grew up in a family where she was quite well off, she never stopped thinking about those that did not have the opportunities that she did. She worked so hard to give back to her community and to stand up and be the voice for those who are often silenced by our justice system. I loved how she was steadfast in proving her clients’ innocence and that at times, she was willing to give up her happiness to ensure that her clients received real and true justice.
Maddox was a morally grey character, and I love how he was written. We see that, when he began his career as a detective, he had the purest and bests of intentions. But, as we know, life happens, decisions must be made, and Maddox was written to show us that no one is perfect; people make decisions that may not be the “best,” when they are put in a corner and can find no way out. Maddox’s internal struggles and conflicts, and his ultimate character transformation was so well done by the author. This story shows us that we have to look at and judge people by the totality of their circumstances and be willing to forgive and give second chances once the ones who make mistakes realize their wrongdoings and choose to right their wrongs.
Talia and Maddox’s chemistry was fiery and undeniable. I truly enjoyed the love story of how two people from the opposite ends of the justice system who, at the end of the day, wanted to same thing for their community, was able to find each other and true love. The way they were able to have a positive impact on each other and the way they were able to allow each other to see the good in themselves and speak life and love into each other was a great representation of black love. As a romance girlie, I loved that this book has the perfect balance of spice, plot, and character development.
Overall, this was a well-written love story that I truly enjoyed. I look forward to reading more from this author and would definitely recommend this book to those looking for an easy-to-read book with lots of romance, spice, great plot, and likable characters.

Talia is a first year associate lawyer at her father's firm Tate & Associates. Becoming a lawyer and carrying on her family's legacy has been her dream since she was a little girl. Talia is goal driven, family oriented and passionate about her beliefs. One night, she matches on a dating app with who, unbeknownst to her, will become her soulmate and the love of her life.
Maddox is a seasoned detective with about a decade of experience on the police force. He is morally grey and will do whatever he needs to do to provide for his family. He is a protector, provider and has a big heart. He is the lead detective on the case of the State v. Duncan trial and has a some tough decisions to make to become the man he wants and needs to be.
This story was an emotional rollercoaster but I loved it from start to finish! The main and secondary characters were well defined and developed. I loved the relationship Talia had with her brother SJ. It was refreshing to see a sibling dynamic that was competition free and full of grace, understanding and unconditional love. I also loved the relationship Maddox had with his niece Brielle. He made a point to be the male figure in her life and she was thriving because of it. The plot was well paced and also had reasonable amount of spice and chemistry. The element of suspense around the case drew me in from the first page and the love story between Maddox and Talia held my attention to the very end.
I didn’t want this story to end!! Although we got a life update in the epilogue, I'm truly going to miss Talia and Maddox. This story symbolizes that you can truly have it all if you both are dedicated and determined to work through it and work it out. Burden of Love is a great read and you will not be disappointed!
**Thank you to NetGalley and Black Odyssey Media for the ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.**
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC that I received for my honest review.
Talia has just graduated from law school, passed her bar exam, and secured a job at her father’s law firm. Her sole goal for her life has been go work at the family law firm that he grandfather started. She hasn’t really had any serious relationships. Whenever she needs male companionship, she uses a discreet dating app. Her rule is that she only sees each guy once.
Maddox is a police officer who has worked his way up in the department. He became a police officer as a result of seeing his best friend die in front of him from a gun shot wound. Because of his focus on his career (since he is the provider for his mother, who is an amputee, and his sister, who is a single mother) he doesn’t have time for romantic entanglements. He also uses the discrete dating app when he needs companionship. He has a similar rule of never bedding the same woman twice. Both characters also use other names when meeting up with their “dates.”
I liked how the relationship started and the chemistry between the characters. They quickly decide that they want to continue their relationship, but they aren’t ready to disclose their identities yet.
I like the story line with the first big criminal case that Talia gets to work on…but then everything goes downhill.
I HATE that Maddox is a dirty cop. I understand why he did it, but I don’t like that story line AT ALL. What I disliked the most was how Maddox was able to easily broker a deal with a drug dealer that allowed him to keep his life and lifestyle….don’t see that as realistic. On top of that Talia just accepts the situation, also not realistic. I liked the premise of the love story, but disliked the dirty cop angle.

I’ve always enjoyed Mya’s writing, and Burden of Love is yet another testament to her talent for blending romance and suspense in unexpected ways. This story follows Talia, a new attorney navigating her budding career, and Maddox, a determined detective who falls hard for her. What begins as a passionate, lust-filled relationship quickly spirals into chaos when a high-stakes case throws them into a storm of conflict, testing both their love and their loyalty.
I was completely hooked by the mix of spice, mystery, and tension. Mya doesn’t shy away from keeping you on edge, and I found myself anxiously flipping pages to see where the case would lead and how the characters would handle the twists and turns. The level of emotional investment I had—especially worrying about some of the characters’ choices—was both thrilling and nerve-wracking.
That said, I found myself wanting more character development. While the chemistry between Talia and Maddox was palpable, I craved a deeper dive into their backstories and motivations to make their journey even more impactful. Despite this, the blend of romance and crime thriller elements made this book one I didn’t know I needed.
Mya once again delivers a compelling, edge-of-your-seat story that’s hard to put down. With its steamy romance, gripping mystery, and unpredictable twists, Burden of Love is a solid 4/5 for me. If you’re looking for a crime thriller with a passionate love story at its core, this is a book you won’t want to miss!
Love on Trial: A Passionate Battle Between Justice and Desire
Mya delivers a captivating blend of legal drama, sizzling romance, and emotional depth in Burden of Love. From the very first page, this story pulls you in with its high-stakes courtroom tension and the undeniable chemistry between Talia and Maddox.
As a newly minted lawyer eager to prove herself, Talia Tate’s passion for justice makes her instantly likable, while Maddox Reed’s rough-around-the-edges, rule-bending approach adds a layer of intrigue and conflict that keeps you hooked. Their push-and-pull dynamic, set against the backdrop of a controversial case, creates a perfect storm of tension, passion, and unexpected vulnerability.
The plot is well-paced and engaging, with twists that keep you guessing and emotional moments that ground the story. Watching Talia and Maddox navigate the fine line between professional duty and personal desire makes for an addictive read. Their chemistry is off the charts, but what really stood out was how Mya balanced the heat with real, raw emotions — making you root for them even when the odds seemed impossible.
Overall, Burden of Love is a fantastic read with a strong plot, relatable characters, and just the right amount of spice and heart. Whether you love legal drama or stories that tackle the complexities of love and justice, this book delivers. Highly recommended!
This book was like one of those courtroom drama TV series… but spicy.
Talia is a young Black woman who just finished law school and just started working at her dad’s law firm when the book starts. Maddox is a detective on the police force. They just so happen to meet and start a whirlwind romance, neither knowing anything about the other’s personal life. They end up finding about each other’s REAL lives in probably the worst possible way. From there, things take a turn for the worse… then the best… then the worse again… then the best again? It’s a roller coaster, but in the best way possible!
As someone who doesn’t really like books with a lot of drama, I enjoyed this one. Usually, the anxiety of thinking “what’s gonna happen next?” makes it unbearable. However, wanting to know what happens with the two main characters and their relationship makes it almost impossible to NOT keep going. The spicy scenes are chef’s kiss, the writing style is descriptive but super easy to read, the characters are so easy to either like or hate. My opinions about the MMC went from one end of the spectrum all the way to the other before the end of the book! I have nothing negative to say about this book at all.
If you like romance and court dramas like Law & Order, I think you’ll enjoy this one.
Well, I was not expecting this book to be sooo good! I literally stayed up half the night to finish it! Firstly, thank you to NetGalley and Black Odyssey Media for providing the e-advance reader copy of this book!
I feel like the premise and the entire book was so captivating! It's kinda like a forbidden romance with a twist? I also loved that the characters were like mid-level adults, vs. people in their 20s. This book had a lot of subplots that I just adored in addition to the main story of Talia and Maddox falling in love. Like the young lawyer trying to prove herself at her father's law firm, Maddox's past, family dynamics, Career vs. Living Your best life, etc. etc. I feel like each of the minor plots made sense and made the story enjoyable. I feel like this book was kinda all over the place in the best way. Like I never really knew what was going to happen in my opinion, but in a good way.
The only thing I did not like was how quickly Maddox's past and decisions were wrapped into nice, neat bow. I wished there was just a tiny bit more push back/conflict there - not necessarily with Talia, but just from the other characters. I will say there were points I was annoyed with Talia, but like I also understood where she was coming from!
I will definitely be reading more from this author!
