Abdullah Abu Sayeed (Bengali: আবদুল্লাহ আবু সাইয়ীদ; born 25 July 1939) is a Bangladeshi writer, television presenter, organizer and activist. He is currently the Chairman of Bishwa Sahitya Kendra, a non-profit organization that promotes the study of literature, reading habits and progressive ideas.


Early life:

Sayeed was born in 1939 in Calcutta. His father was Azimuddin Ahmed, a teacher of both English and Bengali literature.He was also a playwright. Sayeed passed SSC exam from Pabna Zilla School in 1955 and HSC exam from Profollo Chandra College in 1957. He later earned the degree of BA and MA in Bengali from the University of Dhaka in 1960 and 1961 respectively.


Career:

Sayeed was a professor of Bengali language in Dhaka College.In mid-1970s he started presenting Shaptabarna (Seven Colors), a multidimensional TV show in Bangladesh Television. In 1978, he founded the Bishwa Sahitya Kendra.


AWARDS:

Sayeed was given the 97th Ramon Magsaysay Award in Journalism, Literature, and Creative Communication Arts for "cultivating in the youth of Bangladesh a love for literature and its humanizing values through exposure to the great books of Bengal and the world".

একটা ভারী কষ্ট গলা অব্দি উঠে এসে বুকে চেপে বসে রইলো। আমার চোখ ছাপিয়ে পানি টলমল করে উঠলো, কিন্তু মাটিতে পড়ল না। আমরা এখন আর কাঁদি না। বয়সের অভিজ্ঞতা থেকে আমরা জেনেছি, যে দুঃখের অশ্রু একবার মাটিতে ঝরে, সে দুঃখকে আমরা হারিয়ে ফেলি।

নাম দেখে ভাবছিলাম কোনো রোমান্টিক উপন্যাস হবে কিন্তু পেলাম লেখকের স্মৃতিচারণমূলক চারটা প্রবন্ধ। লেখকের ছাত্রজীবনে ঢাকাই সুচিত্রা সেন জাহানারা ইমামকে নিয়ে লেখা 'জাহানারা ইমাম', দেশভাগের পর তৎকালীন পূর্ব পাকিস্তান থেকে সম্ভান্ত্র হিন্দুদের দেশত্যাগের ঘটনা নিয়ে 'বিদায়,অবন্তী!', লেখকের শিল্প, সাহিত্য ও সংগঠন জীবন নিয়ে 'অনিশ্চিত কালবেলায়' এবং ছাত্র জীবনে জীবনের ঝুঁকি নিয়ে রবীন্দ্র শতবার্ষিকী পালনের অভিজ্ঞতা নিয়ে লেখা ' নীরব সঙ্ঘ ও রবীন্দ্র শতবার্ষিকী ' রচনাগুলো স্থান পেয়েছে বইটাতে।

কোনো নির্দিষ্ট টপিক নেই, আবার রচনাগুলো একই সময়েও লেখা হয়নি। বিভিন্ন সময়ে বিভিন্ন টপিক নিয়ে লেখা রচনাগুলোর একমাত্র মিল লেখকের চিন্তাচেতনার সাথে পাঠকদের পরিচয় করিয়ে দেওয়া। যারা বিশ্বসাহিত্য কেন্দ্র এবং লেখককে নিয়ে উৎসাহী তারা লেখকের জীবনের বিভিন্ন অজানা দিক জানতে পারবে বইটা থেকে। তাঁর অনুভূতিশীল মন, দেশ-জাতি নিয়ে তাঁর চিন্তা ও তাঁর চিরকালীন সংগ্রামের পরিচয় ছড়িয়ে আছে পুরো বইটা জুড়ে। লেখক বক্তৃতায় যেমন স্বতঃস্ফূর্ত ও সাবলীল তাঁর লেখনীও তেমন। বর্ণনার ভঙ্গিতে মুগ্ধ হতে হয়, উইটের পরিচয় পেয়ে আশ্চর্যান্বিত হতে হয়। ভালো একটা বই নিঃসন্দেহে।

অনেকদিন পর একটানে শেষ করলাম কোনো বই। বলার কোন ভাষা নেই ।অবশ্যই পাঠ্যনীয় ।
