"I hold my hopes and dreams as an author in the bags under my eyes."
KJ Bradford is a creator of worlds, living in Kentucky with her husband, daughter, and zoo of pets. She loves reading, cats, flowers, anime, and writing, but maybe not in that order. She’s an awkward little dragon who either holes up in her writing cave or talks about her current obsession to anyone who will listen, with no in-between. Multiple stories are playing out in her head at all times and writing has become her solace as well as her entire personality. Her writing can be described as dark and swoony, gritty and fantastical. When she’s not writing or reading, she’s taking care of her amazing family while thinking about writing.
Mischievous FMC Kemora, has great tactic in revenge and justice towards those that deserve it. She has a strong backbone, and she is chaos! Beauty, Braun and Brains all in one!
This fantasy story is about winged people (Seraphim) that live in the sky above the clouds. The Lunarians worship the Goddess Lunera and Solarians worship the Goddess Sumirey, each thinking themselves superior to the other. I don’t want to give too much away, so I’ll just say there is a great mystery behind the scenes that leaves your jaw hanging. So many secrets to reveal!
There is a great steady pace of anticipation leading to the plot twists and great foreshadowing brought together nicely through the storyline.
I liked that there are excerpt from Seraphim history books and journals at the beginning of each chapter. They slowly reveal hints and clues to why the people act as they do and how their world became chaos.
I knew from the first blurp I read that this book was going to be so different, and I had to read it asap. I was right! It was excellent in world building and so unique.
The last 20% of the book had me reeling and trying to figure out where all the puzzle pieces were heading and I truly thought I knew what to expect, and then… bam! I did not see that coming! So much went down, so much discovered, revealed and shifted! There are so many questions and theories in my head now.
Great debut novel!! Well done!! Can’t wait for book 2!
First of all, I want to say I am so proud of KJ. To see the process of her brainstorming and writing to reading the book itself is so amazing. I was lucky enough to be an ARC Reader.
This book is so much more than fantasy. The book focuses on real-life issues, such as Race, Colorism, and belonging.
“Solarians are your enemy and they will eat you alive if you let them”
Kemora a Halfling who has been trying to find her place amongst the Lunarians. Kemora is alienated when it’s discovered that she was blessed with a gift from Godsses Sumirey. Longing to be accepted Kemora decides to become a warrior to prove her loyalty to the Lunarians. Kemora's dreams of finding acceptance amongst her people come to a halt when halflings start to go missing. It isn’t until Yoko Kemora’s lover that she decides to take matters into her own hands.
“ She had never been Lunarian enough to keep their friendship, but now she was plenty Lunarian enough to be their sacrifice.”
I instantly connected with Kemora’s journey of searching for acceptance. And only being welcomed when it was convenient for others. The world-building is intricate and easy to follow. I also loved that each chapter had a little history or background to help with the history between Lunarians and Solarians. Each interaction has a purpose and all secrets come to light by the end of the book.
Each character was written perfectly. I was able to visualize everyone. Misha is my favorite side character and I hope he’s in the next book.
I’m obsessed with Rakka and Kemora. Their banter is written perfectly. He’s cocky but willing to do anything for her. She’s fierce but when it comes to Rakka she’s shy. I’m just praying he doesn’t break her heart.
Legends of Ravens is the perfect fantasy. It’s an enticing dark fantasy with a deep underlying story. It has betrayal, romance, secrets, love, and found family. I highly recommend this book!
"She had never felt so welcome amongst her own, never felt more united than now. The irony did not miss her as they cheered her on as she sacrificed herself to the enemy."
Legends of Ravens: The Library of Solaris is beautiful and I could not put this down. If I wasn't reading, I was thinking about it. haha This fantasy has a little bit of everything for every type of fantasy reader. History and lore. A lil romance and a lil spicy tension romance. Heart ache. Fighting and gore. An ending that will have you screaming for more. It is pretty delightful and I really enjoyed my time reading this. The characters in this story are relatable and very well thought out. There are random points in the story where the point of view shifts and it fits. Everyone has a specific role and once you learn more and more about everything...*mind blown*.
What I found interesting was that there are points where the pacing slows down and seems to lose focus, BUT it is all wrapped up at the end. There is a point to everything that happens.
I highly recommend everyone to experience Legends of Ravens. Thank you so much KJ letting me be a part of your ARC team! I can't wait to see where this goes!!
Sweet mother of Jesus this book was a WILD ride and I ate up every single second of it. I LOVED Kemora & Rakka together, talk about TENSION. I will defend Leila with my LIFE that sweet baby angel. All the side characters (Misha particularly) LOVED them.
Completely not what I was expecting at all. Jaw dropping, surprisingly dark, and heartbreaking???? But so extremely well written and entertaining to read.
I was privileged enough to receive an arc copy of this book and loved it! Kemora is a badass FMC and really comes into her own once she meets Rakka (my absolutely favourite character)! If you’re a fan of fantasy world building with a little bit of spice, found family, and strong female characters this is a recommendation for you! There’s lots of twists and turns and I’m not going to spoil it you’ll just have to read it to find out! And after than ending I can’t wait for book 2!
“We are children of chaos, we don’t run from danger. We revel in it.” This romantasy novel is a must read! It keeps you on your toes, expect the unexpected with this one! The whole novel has beautifully written elements of society issues. Race relations, poor vs rich, society expectations and war. It really makes you think about life.
Kamora is the FMC all readers can relate to and aspire to be more like her. She is strong, loyal, stubborn and loving in her own way. As someone who never fit in with anyone else she always worked hard to be the best, to be someone that they would acknowledge. It is heartbreaking and powerful all in one. Leila was a lovable character and while not as bold as Kemora she too was strong and relatable! Her story is a sad one and I adored her relationship growth with Kamora. Rakka was such an arrogant, sexy MMC who says the hottest lines to the FMC. I can’t wait for more from their relationship growth. The build up of their chemistry was sooo good! I need more
The ending 🙃 ugh I need more….
“You don’t need to try so hard to make me jealous, Little Raven,” his voice was husky as his breath tickled her ear. “You can just tell me you want me.” Heat rose up her neck and warmed her cheeks. “Where’s the fun in that?”
Legend of Ravens: The Library of Solaris is the first installment in a dark fantasy series by KJ Bradford. I received an eARC in exchange for my honest review. The book comes out July 17th 2024.
Kemora has always lived above the clouds longing to know what lies beneath them. Beneath her world divided by race and hate. She is a fierce warrior and a loyal friend, however, she has never been accepted by her people because she is a halfling and has been blessed by her enemy’s goddess, Solaris. When halflings start going missing, including her lover, Kemora is determined to find answers. Even if she has to go to a place her father has forbidden her to go. The events that happen next throw Kemora right into the hands of the enemy. She must tread lightly to find the answers that she seeks. In the process, she finds out much more than she ever could have imagined. Now she must question everything she has ever known to be true.
This book is GOLD if you love dark fantasy with a romantic subplot. I had an instant connection with the FMC, Kemora. She is amazing! She is fierce, feral, and makes no apologies. She is also kind, compassionate, and loving. When her heart broke, mine was also breaking for her. The other main characters, Leila and Rakka were both amazing! Leila is total bestie vibes and Rakka is a new book boyfriend with an impressive wingspan. Iykyk. There is slow burn romance. The flirty banter between Kemora and Rakka was intoxicating. The world building and magic system in this book were just phenomenal! There is plenty of political intrigue and bloodshed that makes for a great dark fantasy. The history and lore were perfectly woven into the book with complementary epigraphs that were expertly and poetically written. I absolutely could not get enough of this book. I will be rereading it just to savor it until the next book is released. It does end in a jaw-dropping cliffhanger that I never seen coming. This whole book is just brilliant. It’s one of my top reads this year.
I want to thank the author, KJ Bradford for gifting me the eARC. I can’t wait until my preorder comes in so I can add to my shelf. It was a privilege to be on your ARC team. You are an amazing writer.
First off, thank you KJ Bradford for the opportunity to read this ARC.
I was hesitant to start this as I have been let down previously by promises to have certain aspects promised in a book, but, I am very happy to say, this did NOT disappoint. Although slow to start the world building was on point and it definitely made a lot more sense towards the end of the book where you needed that background to know why things happened the way they did, the imagery and scenery settings made me feel like I was standing beside these characters living through them. So - pay attention (you have been warned)
Once the story and plot started picking up I devoured the rest of this book in what felt like 2.5 seconds, I am now obsessed, HOW, is this only book 1... The tension between our FMC and our MMC was just - delicious and can we give a silent aahh sigh for Misha
The way Kemora figured out who she is and where she needs to be in the world was brilliant, always questioning everything and not settling for anything less than brutal honesty. Rakka holds a special place in my heart how he would do ANYTHING for Kemora, IYKYK,he just knew when she needed to be pushed and when she needed to be guarded.
ALSO - can we discuss that freaking plot twist!!!! KJ Bradford, where have you been all my life.
First the obvious: I HIGHLY recommend reading this book!
The world building, characters, as well as magic system are all truly unique. The amount of political intrigue, mystery, and character depth all hit the mark. Personally, I am not huge fan of romance – but, when that takes the stage, it is sensible and within the expectations of the characters. Legends of Ravens is a wonderful example of the dark fantasy category.
For anyone who enjoys fantasy, with a definitive edge to the characters, this is for you. One warning: some of the fight and explicit scenes would make Geralt and Yennifer blush. (If you know, you know.)
Even with five stars, there are three minor cons: first, the pacing felt slow at the beginning, but the world building and decisions of the characters get tied together at the end beautifully. Second, the font of the epigraphs was very small on my device. But these are an ABSOLUTE MUST READ and were one of my favorite parts. The third con should be obvious…I need to wait for book 2.
Dark fantasy Badass FMC Romantic subplot Unique world building Political intrigue Winged characters (Seraphim)
I loved Kemora’s journey and watching her navigate through her place in the world. I loved how strong she was written and her very unapologetic honesty.
The writing, is freaking amazing. Pay close attention because some things will come up that you really won’t think anything of and then towards the end of the book, it starts falling into place like OMG, that’s why she said this or felt this way. My theory for the missing halflings was right BUT there was definitely more to it that I didn’t see coming. I was very surprised.
The romantic subplot was great, I loved every bit of it. Rakka was awesome. Very cocky but still sweet and caring. I also loved the side character Mischa.
That ending left me with so many questions! Not in a bad way at all, just the twists shocked me.
Legends of Ravens was a thrilling and thoroughly enjoyable book from start to finish. KJ’s attention to detail, voice, and sense of storytelling had me absolutely hooked. I never wanted it to end! I love the all characters SO much (except a few, you know who you are) and I can’t wait to see where their stories go! If you are a lover of lush fantasy with a side of tear-worthy character storylines and jaw-dropping plot, Legends of Ravens is a MUST READ!!
Oh how I love this book. I initially did an alpha read for Legends of Ravens and instantly fell in love with this world and these characters. It has been nothing short of magic being able to see how KJ weaved this story into the masterpiece it is. Our FMC Kemora’s journey through her identity and where she fits in the world was so raw and relatable to me, I had multiple heart clench moments throughout this book. My connection to her was instantaneous because of how much I saw past versions of myself in her. Her inner dialogue is wonderfully vulnerable while her core personality is strong and resilient and she has no issue speaking her mind and standing up for herself.
One of my favorite parts of the book is the epigraphs with the history and especially the lore of the goddesses. KJ’s writing style in these portions is so darkly whimsical and she really effectively alters her writing voice in both her histories and characters.
The plot of the story had me hooked with the first drop of “missing halflings” and oh boy, the answer to that mystery did not disappoint. I had so much fun coming up with my crackpot theories while reading. One of my favorites came to life while still holding an aspect I didn’t see coming that made my jaw hit the ground in the best way possible.
Our love interest Rakka is EVERYTHING. Seriously, everything I love to see in an MMC for stories with a romantic subplot. He’s cocky, sweet, caring, and also challenges our girl. All things that give great depth to their budding relationship and holy hell, after than ending I NEED MORE NOW.
This was a 5⭐️ read for me when it was still a rough draft, and the finished product has truly blown me away. If you love dark fantasy, beautiful prose, strong yet vulnerable characters, and fantastic world building… this is the book for you.
I read this book in January (it’s now July) and I still think about it CONSTANTLY! I loved so many things about this book; the adventure, the subtle romance, the badass FMC, I don’t know where to begin!
The FMC, Kemora, is a well developed character with flaws, needs, and desires. I absolutely loved her and wish more fmc’s were like her! She is funny and smart and did I mention BADASS!
Rakka, the MMC, is officially one of my obsessions. I’m in love with that man!
The plot is well thought out, I felt like everything she had in the book was relevant to the story and by the end of book one I was clawing the walls ready for book two!
KJ is an incredibly talented author and this being her debut book makes me extremely excited to read her future works! Hurry up book two!
This was my first ever fantasy and let’s just say, it did not disappoint. Beyond the action, this book was full of diverse characters, both in race and sexual identity. I LOVED THAT. this book dives into life as a “misfit” in a world where race rules all in a very raw and real way. The discrimination Kemora faced is mirrored in my own experience in society in real life; that just made the book all the more real to me. There was a slow burn romance plot blossoming at around the halfway point that had me swooning and screaming, clutching my kindle like pearls!! There were some of the best most romantic lines I’ve read in a hot minute. Each side character had their own vivid and unique personality while simultaneously adding value to the story. Not a single word was wasted. The plot twists literally gave me the best and worst case of whiplash there is foreshadowing at every turn and I just know the reread of this is going to blow my mind. This ends on a suspenseful note making you crave more. KJ Bradford is a fantasy author to watch! If this is on your TBR, Bump it up now. Just trust me. Love love loved!!!! 🖤🖤
I've had the honor to receive an ARC copy of 'Legends of Ravens' by KJ Bradford. A few days ago I finished it and let me tell you..... this book is good 💕 I won't give to much away, but if you want to read about a badass FMC who's headstrong and would never give up, you will have fun with that book. And the tension and romance 🔥👀. I highly recommend you doing it if you looking for fun and unique storyline where the characters are all winged beings with different 'blessings'. Where the FMC gets shunned, harassed, bullied etc. by most of her people because of who she is, but who never lets those thoughts and doings keep her down. And I won't even mention that cliffhanger 🤯.... still blown away from that....
The book release is on the 17th of July and you can preorder it on Amazon.
Holy shit snacks this was amazing!!!!! What a debut Novel!!!!
Let me start by saying I love all the representation that is shown in this book!!!! It means the world to a mixed girl like me to truly SEE herself as the FMC!!!! I’ve never wanted to dye my curls violet more than I do now!!!! lol The world building was amazing as well as her underlying themes that are more than relatable to real life issues! The slow burn Lieutenant Rakka can have me however he likes lmfao…..sheesh I’m feral for the next installment! I was engrossed in the histories and her flow of writing made it so hard to not read this in a day! The only reason I slowed it down was to make it last longer and because I wasn’t ready for it to be over! If you love Romantasy this is for you. 10s ACROSS THE BOARD!!!!
I'm Obsessed! The story and writing are so captivating making it hard to put the book down or even forget about the characters or world. The worldbuilding is excellent with descriptive writing, interesting powers and political and relationship dynamics. It is relatable and deals with the feelings of inadequacy you get when your born into two different groups but never truly fitting it. This acts as a strong start to the series as we are introduced to so much yet there's a lot we don't know. The main character is fun to follow as she is a strong, powerful, loyal warrior and you just want to see her happy.
WOW what a book to get me out of my reading slump!
KJ writes beautifully and her words stick with me for so long I continue to think about them after I have put the book down (which was hard to do). One that sticks out will forever be 'It was said that the trees grew red from drinking the blood spilled in the forest from centuries of hosting the Warrior Rite there.' Just wow. KJ writes so brilliantly you can picture everything.
Thank you so much for writing this book. If you love fantasy this book is a must read.
Omggggg!! I have never highlighted so much in an ebook! This book hooked me from page one and kept me up far too late on more than one occasion.
Bradford has done a phenomenal job of building a world so immersive that i had dreams about these characters. DREAMS!! From the descriptions of both people and places the development is so flushed out this can't be fiction, they can't be fiction. Right? Right?!!?
This book intrigued me, then broke me, it pulled me in closer, and it shook me to the core! Guys this book made me CRY!
Not only did I want to read this faster I also wanted to savor each chapter! This one's gonna leave a mark and now i need wings.
ARC in exchange for an honest review - DNF @ 20% Won't be rating.
The main reason for this DNF was the writing style. A lot of it was written in an immature tone for adult characters, which confused me in the story and what was expected. Not to say the writing was underdeveloped or bad, but that it wasn't 'reading' for the marketed audience. There were a few lines that came across quite strangely in a fantasy setting. There were a lot of other elements that confused me as well, in regards to the progression of information, repetition of scenes, among other things, but it was mainly the writing style for me. A writing style that is trending in the publishing market, mind you, so it really is just a me-problem.
However, I really loved the concept and the world building. There were a lot of intricate pieces of lore and fresh ideas that Bradford used in the novel to captivate me. The poly-rep was amazing, along with the new angle of winged-people that was used. I could also tell there was a lot of underlying culture and history in the fantasy-race we're introduced to at the start, which is written incredibly well and thoughtfully.
All in all, this book just wasn't for me, but it has the potential to be for you.
I initially read this as a beta read for KJ, and I kept forgetting that this wasn’t actually published yet. Now that it’s about to be published, and I see the tweaks and changes she made, ITS EVEN BETTER!! The writing, the characters, the world building 🔥🔥🔥. I fell in love with all the characters and the entire story had me guessing up until the end. The ending actually made my jaw drop, like physically and actually, in the best possible way. If you love steamy and swoon-worthy romantic subplots, gripping mysteries, and fun magic—this is the book for you! I can’t wait for book 2!!
Legends of Ravens by KJ Bradford - 4.5/5⭐️ (Spoiler-free review)
A dark fantasy with a helping of spicy romance about Kemora, a half-Solarian half-Lunarian Seraphim who has struggled to fit in her whole life. When Halflings start to go missing, including her lover, she is determined to find out the truth.
This book was so much fun to read! The worldbuilding was absolutely magical, the setting described in dreamy imagery. The writing is very engaging and it’s easy to get sucked in. Kemora is a stabby badass and you can see how the adversity she’s faced has shaped her. My favorite part of this book were the epigraphs at the beginning of each chapter. They offered so much depth and a deeper understanding of the animosity between Lunarians and Solarians.
At some points I felt that Kemora strayed from the plot or I didn’t understand her actions, but there is a VERY good reason for it. Everything has a purpose and it is so cleverly tied up at the end. On another note, some scenes and chapters were pretty short and I just wanted to see more. I loved the characters and wanted more interaction, more backstory, everything!
The ending left me with more questions than answers and I seriously can’t wait for the next book! Excellent debut by KJ Bradford ❤️ Thank you so much for sending me an ARC ✨📚
The writing is amazing. The world building, the characters, the adventure are perfection. I couldn't put it down (especially the last 20% or so). Kemora is a great MC and I loved following her journey. The book didn't drag, the pacing was amazing. I couldn't put it down and found myself wanting to keep going onto the next chapter. If you enjoy romantasy, this is a must read. This debut is incredibly well written and I can't wait for the next one in the series.
I was pleasantly surprised with the wonderful world building in done in such a short amount of time with this book. The story hooked me pretty much immediately and I loved the main character. The cliffhanger/twist at the end got me really good and I cannot wait to read the next installment.
"The lies one tells oneself are gobbled down greedily compared to the swift way one spits out a bitter truth"
Legends of Ravens is a dark fantasy romance that takes familiar tropes and transforms them into something fresh and deeply engaging. The story is BEAUTIFULLY woven, with KJ amazingly integrating hints and details throughout the chapters AND IT ALL COMES TOGETHER IN THE FINAL CHAPTERS. I was SCREAMING. It had me on the edge of my seat, heart racing like there’s no tomorrow, and left me with SOOO many thoughts, questions, theories, and hopes for the next book! I really cannot wait!
From the start, you’re introduced to the fierce and compelling character of Kemora. And I absolutely love her and her dynamic with different characters in the story. The story itself is told through three POVs but the characters’ voices are so unique that you never need to guess whose perspective you’re reading. Each character is distinctive, making the story all the more powerful and engaging for me!
KJ has created an immersive and richly detailed world that pulls you in from the very first page. The setting is enchanting, almost deceptively, with its magical, pink, and fluffy elements that make you wish you could live there but then it turns dark and I absolutely love this contrast.
I absolutely LOVED this book and the sass the characters had. I cannot wait what KJ has up her sleeve for other books because she’s definitely a “if she writes it I’m going to buy it” author for me!
This debut book by KJ Bradford hit it out of the park, was a slam dunk, and any other sport analogy you want to use. I love romantasy when it's done right and this book did so many things right. There was amazing world building, character development, and plot arc that I felt like I could step through the pages. Kemora, the main character, is a bundle on contradictions - she plays at being the fierce warrior but still delights in flowers - and these layers make her relatable and the readers become invested in her journey. As Kemora is the main character, the majority of the book is told from her point of view, but throughout the book there are moments where we see the plot through the other characters view point. This alternating view really added elements on intrigue and furthered the plot. And speaking of plot... my mind was completely blown. There were some plot lines where you maybe had a hunch and there were others that you never saw coming. And I am totally here for that type of plot lines because it was so well handled and wasn't done for the shock factor. Honestly the only thing that I don't like is having to wait for the next installment. This book was amazing and would highly recommend to anyone who enjoys adult fantasy.
I received this book from the publisher/author at no cost to me and volunteered to read it; my review is my honest opinion and given without any influence by the author or publisher.
This fantasy romance is the first in a new series, The Library of Solaris. Tropes include winged characters, political intrigue, warrior FMC, betrayal, found family and LGBTQ+ representation. Please read content warnings for dark topics and explicit scenes.
The Lovely: I loved the FMC, Kemora, and how she held her head high despite how her own community treated her. She’s a badass warrior but her inner monologues show some of that to be a front. As the story progresses we get to see her develop relationships with new people and the banter is hysterical. I also loved the world building - it’s truly unique in that it’s not something I’ve seen done before.
The Mundane: I felt like the story got off to a slow start. Not because of world or lore building but because it seemed like the author was holding back in the storytelling. About 45% of the way in the pacing picked up, the character relationships felt more realistic and the story as a whole felt more cohesive.
Rating: 4/5 Stars 2/5 Flames
Recommendation: I received an advance review copy, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. There is a pretty big twist towards the end that I definitely didn’t see coming. I thought something was fishy with that character but had no idea *that* was it. The big twist changes a lot for the story and I’m excited to see where it goes from there in the next book.
Congratulations Kj on an incredible start to the series. Fallen series meets ACOTAR with a fantastically developed story line that has extremely in-depth details on the creation of not only each species but also the realms in which they live. Please CHECK TRIGGERS, there are some Very, Very dark plot twists within this pretty work of art!
FMC is one of the first descendants to the god they worship, except only by half her blood; the other half is not fully known. Being an outcast within her community causes her to hide her other half because she is always judges and disregarded by everyone no matter what lengths she goes to show she is one of them. When she notices her love is missing (another half-ling) she realises that something is happening and she must find out! After disobeying the rules and sneaking off looking for answers she returns to find her whole world is about to change as she must hand herself over to the royals. But they don’t know what she is really up to and she becomes distracted in the process while being a captive.
This book is told via third person looking in situation with a lot of world and background details, it is definitely a slower read.
There are plot twists and massive turns throughout this that you do not see coming that pull at all your emotions and shock factors. It was such a great read and I need to know what happens next so bad!!!
From the second I saw this book, I knew I needed it! But before I talk about the book, I want to express my appreciation and gratitude to KJ Bradford. Not only is she an amazing writer/author, but she is such a genuinely beautiful person! I'm so proud of her for publishing this masterpiece!
Legends of Ravens has its own uniquely, stunning world-building and character development like I've never seen before! When KJ said she wanted to deliver a book that everyone would love, she was not lying!
“We are children of chaos, we don’t run from danger. We revel in it."
A dark fantasy story, infused with some steamy romance about Kemora, a half-Lunarian, half-Solarian Seraphim who has spent her entire life struggling to fit in. She is determined to learn the truth when Halflings, including her beloved, start going missing.
If you want a strong FMC, who is unapologetically fierce, kind, compassionate and loving, mixed with a hot MMC, who is broody, protective and arrogant but says some completely hot things to the FMC.... Then Kemora and Rakka are waiting for you!
