Randy Zak and her mother had a deal--one year in Acorn Falls and it's back to New York. Now her mother wants to stay and Randy doesn't know what she wants to do. Will a visit from her best New York friend, Sheck (who's also the cutest guy Katie, Sabs, and Allison have ever seen), help Randy make up her mind?
The title and cover have literally nothing to do with the subject matter in this book. Randy is homesick for NYC - and why wouldn't she be? She lives in a converted barn in Bumfuck, Minnesota now. This book is essentially Randy considering moving to live with her music producer father back in the city while she entertains her friend from back home. Shenanigans ensue.
I wish Sabrina’s dad would get a job in Vermont or something…that’s how we get rid of characters in YA/MG series isn’t it? Maybe Jeffrey French could replace her in the group.
First of all, the cover and title have literally nothing to do with the story, which follows Randy as she tries to decide between living in Acorn Falls and Manhattan. We also have a visit from Randy’s never-before-mentioned best friend from New York Sheck (and, yes, I *did* read that as Shrek every single time) and a party given by Stacey (who the vile Sabrina nicknames Stacey the Great as an…insult? I think someone needs to give Sabs a dictionary stat). I don’t think it’s a spoiler to say that Randy chooses Acorn Falls as the series continues to feature her for eleventy billion more books. At least this one was relatively light on Sabrina which is more than can be said for the next installment.
Rebel Rebel After finding out her mom (Olivia) has a chance to pursue her talent as a budding artist in Acorn Falls, Randy is faced with the decision to continue to live in Acorn Falls or go back to New York in June and live with her father. Especially after pressure from her best friend Sheck who comes to visit during Thanksgiving break.
My Thoughts: *Why would you WANT to go to a party where you're not wanted? Invite some other girls (the other ones that aren't invited) and have your own cooler party. I never get the girls in books that want to go to the parties of people that treat them like their nothing. I'd be thinking SCREW YOU! *Why would you drop out of school and give up on a talent (gift) because you meet a guy? It doesn't say Olivia was pregnant. Plenty of people go to school and pursue their passion at the same time. When I was in college I dated plenty, but I would have been out of my mind to think I was so in love with someone that I was going to drop it all for them. And just like Olivia learned the ones I thought I was so IN LOVE WITH nowhere to be seen today!
*Isn't Acorn Falls also where the Get-Along-Gang lives? *No pre-teen girl says hunk! I'm sorry. Grandmothers say hunk. This book wasn't written in 1950. *I take it back. It is 1950. Checked, pleated, pants? On a guy? UMM NOO!
*Wearing all black is definitely not an uncool thing and it isn't a *goth* thing these days either. *What's up with guys always falling all over themselves for blond (busty) blue-eyed chicks that act like b's?
Rating: 6. There was a good message in this. The message was that home isn't just where you "fit in". Home is where the people who love you are. I didn't think *that* much of Sheck. He was a real jerk over half the book putting off Acorn Falls because it wasn't as good as New York. But I liked the tobogganing scene. Surprisingly it sounded like fun to me. I did something similar but with a cardboard box in the snow when I was a little girl and lived with my mom in Tuskegee. I bet tobogganing is such a rush! I'd love to try it!
