What if Vivekananda had actually wrung up one police officer’s neck, and he was still alive even after his Mahasamadhi? What if Sri Aurobindo had drafted a theoretical exposition on the principles of The Bomb? What if Gandhi had his death ethereally prophesied long back? What if Indian history has always had a certain connection with a recurrent cosmological event? What if the Geeta was the only instrument that could initiate one’s fight for the Independence? And, what if all these intriguing facts of history get somehow linked to a mystery that was about to transpire decades later in a small town enclosed by the sylvan lower Himalayan terrains?

Of course, it should be one of the most incredible exploratory reading journeys that need the passion for serious investigation. One relic that is believed to have some kind of bond with some ancient rulers of the sixteenth century north-eastern India, gets handed down to the current generations of one of the renowned families of Jalpaiguri who are going to celebrate their annual Durga puja. But just before the days of puja, the treasured possession goes missing. It will be an embarrassment for all, for without the prized asset, no puja is possible. Certainly, an inquest ensues as clues get to hand one after another, and the riddle is finally solved.

But also, the historical facts to be unearthed through the enquiry are of immense significance. So, should the readers be all pleased to see a mere offender being brought to justice, or will it be more fascinating for them to uncover another mystery with the direct presence of the most mysterious character of Indian and World history, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose? ‘The Unscriptured’ is just that question.

The Unscriptured: A Challenging But Rewarding Exploration

Sourish Roy's "The Unscriptured" embarks on an ambitious expedition to unearth the hidden depths of Bengali culture and history. The story unfolds through the tribulations of the Bagchi family, whose Durga Puja ceremony is disrupted by a devastating theft. This event serves as a catalyst, sparking a suspenseful investigation that delves into the Bagchis' ancestry and Bengal's rich tapestry. Roy's prose is undeniably sophisticated, wielding complex sentence structures and a nuanced vocabulary. While this might pose a challenge for casual readers, those willing to persevere will be rewarded with a profoundly immersive experience.

The characters, Debashish and Joyeeta, are well-developed, their contrasting personalities adding depth to the narrative. However, the complexity of the writing style and the non-linear structure necessitate a patient and attentive reader. The inclusion of maps or timelines could have further enhanced accessibility. Nevertheless, "The Unscriptured" offers a rewarding exploration for patient readers with a keen interest in historical mysteries and cultural immersion.

Imagine if Vivekananda had actually wrung a police officer's neck and survived even after his Mahasamadhi. Suppose Sri Aurobindo had written a theoretical exposition on the principles of The Bomb. Consider if Indian history had always been connected to a recurring cosmological event.

A relic, believed to have a connection with ancient rulers of 16th-century northeastern India, is handed down through generations of a renowned family in Jalpaiguri, who are preparing to celebrate their annual Durga Puja. However, the treasured possession goes missing just before the festival, causing great embarrassment as the puja cannot proceed without it. A hunt begins, with clues emerging one after another until the riddle is finally solved. But the investigation also uncovers historical facts of immense significance.

Should readers be content with seeing a mere offender brought to justice, or will they find it more fascinating to uncover another mystery involving the most enigmatic figure in Indian and world history, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose?

Roy’s writing style is intricate and detailed, with complex sentences that may be challenging for some readers but become easier with time. The narrative shifts between different periods, adding suspense but also potential confusion.

This is the kind of book where each re-reading unveils new, interesting details that might have been missed previously. It not only provides an engaging mystery but also delves into the cultural and historical tapestry of the Bagchi family, enriching the reader’s experience with every read. The characters are determined and possess a strong sense of duty to their heritage.

Being a sucker for good writing, I loved the layered storytelling that enriched the narrative of The Unscriptured. While the non-linear structure and heavily ornate writing might seem to hamper the reading experience, it actually demands more attention from the readers.  One would need to completely engage with the text to derive benefits from it.

In a nutshell, The Uncriptured offers a richly detailed exploration of cultural legacy. It is best suited for those who would like to read an academically heavy text.

The Unscriptured by Sourish Roy is a captivating historical thriller, knitted together with the fragments of historical and thrilling events, eventually forming an amazing genre-amalgamated fiction that will insist the readers to finish reading as soon as possible.

Through Roy's masterful storytelling, the reader is taken to the North Bengal, where lives the Bagchi family. During the occasion of their years's old nostalgic Durga Puja, the priest is found dead and a rare statue, inherited by the family goes missing. Debasish and Joyeeta undertakes the task to find it out and during this chase they figured out their family's old history of participation in the struggle for independence.

While the web congeals, one after another historical treasures get revealed; the legendary freedom fighters appear and the profound journey goes on holding its enthralling momentum. Additionally comparison make the book more enrich towards historical factors.

The story starts with a keenly balanced narratives, gains pace and holds on throughout the episodes. The author's extensive knowledge, minute research and meticulous organisation can be witnessed at every phase of the book, he has a talent for building the storyline exquisitely and maintaining a sense of intrigue throughout the story.

The language is little typical to grasp and some of the way the point seems incomplete / cut the half way but the narratives and gripping storyline have provided a sturdy stake to the novel. I ll not at all recommend this book to the beginners. Rest, The story resonates on a profound level, immersing readers in the essence of the mystery.

Overall it's a good read for me. U will definitely liked it . Thumbs up .

Sourish Roy's "The Unscriptured" : A Triumphant Marriage of Genre and Legacy

Debashish and Joyeeta emerge as meticulously crafted characters, their contrasting temperaments adding a dynamic dimension to the unfolding drama. However, the intricacy of the writing style, coupled with the non-linear structure, demands a dedicated and patient reader. "The Unscriptured" by Sourish Roy is a captivating exploration of Bengal's cultural and historical heritage. The story revolves around the Bagchi family, whose Durga Puja celebrations are disrupted by the sudden death of their priest and the theft of a sacred 19th-century Devi Durga statuette. This relic, deeply tied to the family's spiritual and cultural legacy, sets the stage for a gripping mystery. Rest you have to discover...

The author's sophisticated and vivid vocabulary is a standout feature of the novel, highlighting his linguistic prowess. The complex prose adds significant depth to the narrative, making it particularly appealing to literary fiction enthusiasts.
For readers willing to engage with its intricacies, this elaborate language enriches the story and provides an immersive experience. Both Debashish and Joyeeta are enjoyable characters and I would say they both are beautifully portrayed in their complementary roles.

However, the novel's intricate and detailed writing style, with its long paragraphs and non-linear structure, demands a high level of engagement from readers. While this complexity offers a richly immersive experience, it may be off-putting for some. Additionally, the book could have been more engaging with the inclusion of maps and flowcharts to help readers navigate the historical and cultural references.

For history lovers and literary enthusiasts, this book is a treasure trove of cultural insights and historical mysteries.

The story revolves around the history of northern West bengal, specifically Jalpaiguri and Cooch Behar. It follows the family history of the Bagchis of Jalpaiguri through many generations and how past events are linked to the case of mysterious disappearance of an old family deity, a 6 inch solid gold statuette of Goddess Durga, right when the annual Durga Puja festival is about to commence.

For people generally interested in History, this would prove to be a special treat. I was specially intrigued because it takes up the task of elucidating the history of a region which is less talked about. It does not leave any detail out and patiently marks out the entire history of the region and its rulers, including the connection the region has with Netaji and Gandhiji as well. Understanding the story wouldn't feel like you have jumped into a moving train all of a sudden, the history lesson is well structured.

However, I feel the language is not suitable for casual readers. I had to refer a dictionary every now and then, the language is so advanced that it is difficult to cover much of it in single sitting, I had to take a lot of breaks.

The mystery element, the disappearance of the statuette took me straight back to Feluda Novels, specifically Joy Baba Felunath, where a similar case takes place in Varanasi. However, I felt the history lesson stretched a bit too much and the actual resolution of the case took a backseat, I would have loved if the sequence of events were altered a bit to keep the reader constantly thinking about the case at hand.

Overall the story feels unique mainly because not many stories I have read are set in Northern Bengal, let alone Jalpaiguri of all places.

“The Unscriptured” is set in the northern part of the Indian state of West Bengal, primarily in the towns of Jalpaiguri and Cooch Behar and revolves around the multi generational history of the Bagchi family. The plot unfolds from the anarchy during one of the Bagchi family’s ritualistic Durga Puja festival. Just as the Durga Puja is about to begin, a 19th-century solid gold small statuette of Goddess Durga disappears just as the festival is about to start. Joyeeta and Debasish set out on a quest to recover the stolen relic, uncovering their family's deep connections to India’s independence movement and cultural heritage.

The author's narrative is full of historical references intertwined with thoughtful detail about the past of the region. For history enthusiasts with a special interest in the less-known history of northern Bengal, the book is glorious. The author also weaves in historical persons, such as Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Mahatma Gandhi, and Vivekananda, into the history while adding some fictional components that blend into story, and making it both educative and imaginative at the same time.

The fictionalization of history – in which the authors ask ‘what if’ questions about famous persons and events also spices up the stories. The characterizations in the narrative is good in the way it was done especially Joyeeta and Debasish, each are relatable with motivations that are sustaining based on their family lineage. Their journey is not just about solving a mystery but also about reconnecting with their family’s past and their own sense of identity.

The author paints his work with complex & elaborate language while beautiful can be tiring for the general readers. The writing style is quite difficult and advanced vocab with complicated sentences makes it somewhat harder to read and grip the plot which eventually affect the stagnate of the book.

The strength of the book is the emphasis on the historical aspects which, however, may eclipses the investigation at times. Even if the vanishing of the deity is at the core of the story, the background development of the history of the region as well as the Bagchi family history can take up more time than the missing statuette.

The story shifts between different time periods, which can add suspense but also lead to confusion, especially when combined with the complex language. The inclusion of historical figures feels like forced and could have been integrated more seamlessly into the narrative. The non-linear approach, while creative, may cause difficulties for casual audiences who seek a light, fast-paced mystery and historical plotline.

In conclusion, it is a richly detailed and thought-provoking novel that blends historical fiction with a compelling mystery. Its unique premise, exploring what-if scenarios involving iconic figures from India’s past, and its immersive depiction of northern Bengal make it a standout in the genre. However, it might challenge readers with its complicated language, finely threaded historical details and non linearity. For readers who enjoy the depth of multilayered narratives and the exploration of India's cultural and historical heritage would find an experience that would be worthwhile.

A promising historical exploration laced with a gripping mystery that's the story of The Unscriptured by Sourish Roy in a nutshell. This distinctive historical fiction not only brings forth the unsung episodes from Indian history but also blends in the elements of mythology with intrigue.

This story is all about the what-ifs that we try to grapple throughout the narrative. But central to this plot is the story of a sudden disappearance of a treasured possesion, just ahead of the Durga Puja. This relic is significant. It is said to have some bond with ancient rulers from 16th century North-Eastern India passed down to the current generation. The disappearance of this relic will bring shame to the community and Puja without it is impossible. This commences the quest to solve the riddle.

What captivated my attention was the premise given in the blurb that reads - "What is Vivekananda had actually wrung up one police officer's neck, and he said as still alive even after his Mahasamadhi? What if Gandhi had his death ethereally prophesied long back?" These compelling lines with mention of a certain cosmological event is what kept me pursuing this story. But as one dives deeper into the narrative one finds how these historical conjectures are infact pivotal in unraveling the mystery. The story is a balanced out narrative of historical references and the contemporary investigation.

The story meanders in varied directions trying to bring in the hues of history that were lost in oblivion. The narrative is woven with an air of secrecy with a cryptic identity of an ascetic patriot. Alongside finding the relic we are also trying to uncover the truth about this elusive figure.

This tale steeped in Indian Freedom Struggle maybe enlightening but isn't meant for all. It is cutout for a niche audience, I feel. In my opinion, the language could have been lucid as grandiloquent vocabulary and lengthy sentences hinder the reading experience and the storytelling does get compromised in the process. Despite that it is tasteful the way it has been penned retracing the Regency era with utmost elegance. The introduction of the characters, the atmospheric tension caused by the investigation, the chronicles from history, character development are deftly done, and with a steady pace. Though there's an urgency to unravel the mystery yet the historical insights keep us on our toes and on the edge of our seats. Additionally the climactic resolution is impactful and satisfying.

To sum up, The Unscriptured by Sourish Roy finely blends facts with fiction presenting a riveting historical fiction that's mindful exploration of the past and the present. ©

Sourish Roy’s “The Unscriptured” is set in Bengal, where the Bagchi family’s Durga Puja tradition is threatened by the sudden death of their priest and the theft of a sacred Devi Durga statuette. This statuette, historically significant and dating back to the 19th century, symbolizes the Bagchi family's deep cultural and spiritual heritage.

The novel delves into themes of legacy, resilience, and redemption as siblings Joyeeta and Debasish endeavor to recover the stolen statuette. Their quest uncovers the family’s historical ties to India’s struggle for independence and cultural revival.

However, the author’s writing style significantly hampers the storytelling. The prose is notably purple, characterized by its overly ornate and lyrical language, resulting in lengthy, convoluted sentences that disrupt the narrative flow. This stylistic choice, likely stemming from the author’s background in History and Language, demands intense concentration and may alienate readers who prefer a more straightforward approach. The dense, elaborate language overshadows the plot, making it difficult for readers to visualize and engage with the story.

The novel’s non-linear structure, while intriguing, adds to the complexity. Alternating chapters between past and present build suspense but can also disorient readers as they navigate the shifting timelines, multiple characters, and storylines. This narrative technique, though meant to deepen the historical and cultural context, often contributes to a sense of confusion.

The characters, Joyeeta and Debasish, are portrayed as determined protagonists committed to preserving their heritage. The inclusion of a reporter uncovering hidden facets of the Bagchi family’s past adds an investigative layer.

Overall, “The Unscriptured” is a richly detailed exploration of cultural legacy. However, its overly elaborate prose and complex narrative structure detract from the storytelling, making it a challenging and less engaging read. The author’s display of historical knowledge, while impressive, does not compensate for the lack of a compelling story.

3. The use of italics all throughout the book to designate the Bengali pronunciation of words and places creates a kind of connection between the characters and the readers that makes the reading a more personal experience.

•• WEAKNESSES: 1. The book is kind of slow paced and confusing at first making it hard to read, however, the pace is picked up somewhere around the middle of the book.
2. The literary skills of the author are executed through long sentences and sometimes that gets in the way of the overall flow of reading.

•• TARGET READERS : Perfect for all 16+ history lovers.

•• GENRE: Historical Fiction

Sourish Roy's "The Unscriptured" breaks new ground in historical fiction. It seamlessly merges historical inquiry with speculative elements and a gripping mystery. The novel explores alternate realities of prominent Indian figures and weaves these thought-provoking ideas into the central whodunit surrounding a missing heirloom from the Bagchi family.

The story unfolds during Durga Puja preparations, thrown into disarray by the theft of a relic believed linked to 16th-century rulers. Recovering the stolen object becomes crucial, not just for family honor but also for religious obligations. What starts as a straightforward mystery takes a captivating turn as the speculative elements from the blurb come into play. Roy skillfully blends historical references with the contemporary investigation, creating a layered narrative that demands active engagement with the past.

Roy delves beyond rote historical recounting, exploring the "unsung chapters" of Jalpaiguri's history. This focus on a specific region enriches the narrative by highlighting the importance of regional narratives within the larger Indian story. The introduction of a shrouded "ascetic patriot" further underscores the novel's exploration of forgotten heroes and hidden chapters.

The richness of Roy's prose, with its elaborate vocabulary and complex sentences, might challenge casual readers. While this style contributes to the atmosphere and reflects the weight of historical inquiry, it necessitates a dedicated reader.

The Bagchi family in Jalpaiguri during the autum of 2019 faces a crisis during their traditional Durga Puja festival. Their priest suddenly dies, and a valuable Devi Durga statuette, treasured since the 19th century, is stolen. The story revolves around siblings Joyeeta and Debasish who embark on a quest to recover the stolen statuette. Along the way, they uncover their family’s deep connections to India’s fight for independence and cultural revival.

Roy’s writing style is intricate and detailed, often using complex sentences may be challenging for some readers but it gets easier with time. The narrative shifts between different time periods, which adds suspense but can also be confusing as the story unfolds, which I really liked because it kept me engrossed in the book.

The novel delves into themes of cultural heritage, resilience, and redemption against the backdrop of northern West Bengal. It provides a deep exploration of the Bagchi family’s history and their enduring traditions, which are intertwined with significant historical events in India. The characters are very determined and have a strong sense of duty to their heritage.

Overall, "The Unscriptured" offers a unique glimpse into the lesser-known history of northern Bengal, particularly Jalpaiguri, and its connections to national figures like Netaji and Gandhiji. While the novel’s complex language and non-linear storytelling may pose challenges, it rewards readers with a deep, multi-layered exploration of cultural identity and historical significance.

Fans of historical fiction and mystery, let me introduce you to your next read - The Unscriptured.

A gripping blend of historical fiction and mystery that brings forgotten episodes of Indian history to life in the best way possible.

The story revolves around the sudden disappearance of a treasured relic just before the Durga Puja festival.

This relic, connected to 16th century North-Eastern Indian rulers, is vital to the community, and its loss could bring shame and halt the festival. The quest to find it forms the heart of the narrative and takes the reader along on an immersive journey.

The thing that I admired the most about the book is how the author deftly balances historical references with a modern-day investigation, making the story both engaging and informative. It's also tricky to use history to your own advantage and form an entirely different narrative based on the facts that already exist and still make it as compelling as he did.

The narrative explores lost pieces of history and the enigmatic figure of an ascetic patriot, adding even more depth to the story.

However, the language can be tough to get into, which might not suit everyone. The complex prose and rich historical details demand careful attention.

Despite this, it is a compelling read, blending history, mythology, and mystery, making it a standout addition to the genre for those who appreciate a richly detailed and thought-provoking narrative.

The unscripted

Ever since I got my hands on this books it did bother me on the connection between historical relic which could possibly open doors to the unveiling secrets of Netaji Subash Bose.

Initially, the story line lingers around how the 17th century ancient relic which is supposed to be a main thing for the Pooja conglomeration goes missing the right before it and eventually it shatters the emotions of the family members into contemplating things about who would have stolen it and how are they supposed to find the relic in the less time they got, which further develops into a whole new plot in connecting things. Mind you...be mindful in understanding the characters, places that's where it gets tricky..

Initially I felt gheraoed by the too many characters and places, kingdoms to start with and reconect their links, language and culture. But it did not let me off the hook as I was more intrigued by the connectiong that authors trying to establish through out. Each chapters adds it own heavyness to the story line and its intense with chapters going by. Its intense in depth between the lines could get fidgety sometimes especially with the political landscape that it provides with the contemporary storyline.

The chapter on "history" finally addresses the elephant in the room "the relic" and that's where it starts to get interesting. The story line is narrated in the context of times through 17th century and covers ore and post independence times. This was infact a challenging read especially in coping up with the characters. I rate it 3.5 stars

If I had to describe this book in one sentence: It’s a history book with an engaging story in it.

The story starts very cryptically. It primarily focuses on the Bagchi family and their annual Durga Puja. Just a few days before the puja, the priest dies. And eventually, a treasured relic also goes missing. This relic is a very important element of this story. Alongside the chaos in the Bagchi family, there is another parallel narration describing the very importance of this relic. All this eventually also ties the Bagchi family to being important figures during the independence of India.

I consider myself to be a very avid reader. But this book humbled me. The writing was so complex and rich that I had to read many chapters twice, even thrice to understand. Maybe adding timelines would have been helpful. It definitely took some time but I eventually got the hang of the narration style.

This is the kind of book that every time you read, you will find out something more interesting you missed the previous time.

After reading Feluda stories and Amitav Ghosh books, after a long time I was on a journey to the eastern part of India, that is not a big part of my reading. So there, it got me more engaged. The story revolves around Jalpaiguri and Cooch Bihar, places i never had read about previously.

It takes time to get accustomed to the writing style of Roy, which is non-linear and verbose when it comes to writing sentences that go on for about a paragraph. So initially, it was a slow outing for me. But once the historical anecdotes and mysteries are weaved in, it made an intriguing affair to read. Yes, this is not an easy-casual read, so mind it ! You have to have rapt attention to the ongoings and then it's a cakewalk towards the captivating conclusion.

I would surely recommend this to historical fiction buffs and those who love their prose lilting and classical.
