An impoverished spinster in love with a man who’s married to his job…and the twist of fate that makes it his job to protect her…
Madeleine Caruthers has been madly in love with her pastor for over a year, but (despite her conviction that the attraction is mutual) he’s made it clear he’s married to the church. So, when her friends summon her to Texas, she doesn’t think twice about signing on as a Pinkerton agent to help bring a dangerous cattle rustling gang to justice. As far as she’s concerned, women can marry their jobs, too.
Pastor Josh Michaelson hates the fact that he’s not in the position to court the lovely Madeleine, but he can’t stand the thought of dragging her into the dangers he faces every day as an undercover detective.
When she abruptly leaves town, he prays she’ll find someone out west who will love her and cherish her the way she deserves. He doesn’t expect to get called to work a case in Texas himself, nor does he (in his wildest dreams) expect to be asked to serve as the partner of the one woman he can’t stop thinking about.
SECOND EDITION: This book was previously part of The Pinkerton Matchmaker Series. It has since been revised, re-edited, and recovered to be a part of its own Western Brides Undercover Series.
An Agent for Madeleine by Jo Grafford is The Pinkerton Matchmaker #83. This is the end of the trilogy of three friends who become Pinkerton agents and also gained husbands. Jo Grafford adds to Madeleine's story as there is a romantic interest that Madeline thinks is one sided but it is not. THe Pinkerton agents have an adventure and catch the bad guys. Jo Grafford has developed these characters so well that you feel as if you are right there with them. This series just keeps getting better. Even though the story is part of the series, you can read it as a stand alone.
An Agent for Madeleine is part of the multi-author series The Pinkerton Matchmaker Series. Each book is a stand alone, however I have noticed some character and plot overlap in the books by Jo Grafford that I have read from the series. In this book, the characters know each other before they marry to fulfill the Pinkerton requirement of female agents being married. When Madeleine answers a call to help out her friend, she has no idea she will be asked to be a Pinkerton agent when she arrives. Nor does she know that she will have to marry her pastor if she chooses to take the assignment. If Josh felt he was free to marry, he thought that Madeleine would make a perfect pastor’s wife. However, as a Pinkerton agent (as well as a pastor) his life was full of danger and uncertainty. When he gets a message that it is time to immediately leave his current post and go to his new position, he doesn’t have a clue that he will be required to marry a new female recruit. An Agent for Madeleine makes for a great afternoon or bedtime read - no intense stressful situations - just enough conflict to keep the plot moving and the reader guessing what is next. Even though An Agent for Madeleine is an adult clean romance, I would not hesitate to add it to a K-12 Christian school library collection. I think middle school and up would enjoy it. I received a complimentary copy of An Agent for Madeleine as part of Jo Grafford’s launch team. This is my honest review.
An Agent For Madeleine is a Pinkerton agent story where Madeleine's friend Jolene sends word they need her to come to Rockwood , TX. They had been at the orphanage at the same time and had made a pact that if one of them ever called, they would immediately come. When Josh, the pastor goes to asking where she is going, and what her friends husbands do in Rockwood he becomes fearful for her safety. He tells Madeleine that she does not need to go as that is a dangerous location.
Josh is an undercover Pinkerton agent that receives his papers to leave the following weekend to go to Rockwood, TX. When he arrives they tell him he must marry their newest Pinkerton female agent and when she showed up it was Madeleine. He could not have been more excited and Madeleine had dreamed of them dating for a year. Josh tells Madeleine that after this cattle rustling case is over he wants to stay married forever. He trains Madeleine for anything and how to protect herself. He puts her through a battery of exercises that makes her ready.
Their undercover job was Madeleine was a nurse supervisor sent to the asylum to watch how they work there but, in reality she is getting info from the patients or nurses. Josh goes as the new pastor for their chapel. They find enough information of corruption going that they make a plan to lure the head of the gang there the following morning when the other agents are there to help. Another great Pinkerton story.
A wonderful end to this Pinkerton "case" where 3 orphan friends get to marry the man that is not only the man of their dreams but they become Pinkerton agents too! This one is different in that the couple knows each other beforehand, however, they have no idea THEY will be a couple and be selected to work together as Pinkerton agents! Madeleine isn't even an agent but receives an urgent message to join her friends in Texas (she's in Missouri) so she drops everything to go to them. Her only regret is that she is leave behind her secret crush, her pastor, Josh Michaelson. Little does she know that Josh is really an undercover Pinkerton agent himself and he gets called to Texas to work on the very case that Madelaine rushes off to! As is the custom, they are married in name only to go undercover to work on the case regarding the cattle rustlers that have been going on and it's a good fit for them. I really enjoyed them working together, plus getting to work with the characters from the other books! Madeleine was very smart and her suggestions and opinions were always taken into consideration, even though she was a woman. You go, girl!!!!
I really loved this book!! I like the way it ended this series in a series, and had my favorites from earlier returning in this one. Madeleine met Josh, and wished for more from him. Thinking he wasn't at all interested, she thinks she'll be better off going to join her friends when she receives a letter from them saying she's needed. Josh is already falling hard for Madeleine, knows he's deceived her, but would really another chance. When he finds out she's leaving, and where she's going, he's pretty sure he knows what will happen next, and he's going to do his best to make sure he's the Agent for her! I soooo enjoyed this, and the story took a few twists and turns I didn't expect!! To make it even better than usual, the faith element in this story was spot on!!!! Reminded me of the Stranger series by Al Lacy!!
I received a complimentary copy of this book, was not required to leave a review, and the opinion expressed is my own.
Sometimes life leads you on a path least expected. Such was the case with Madeleine Caruthers.. Her unrequited loan for Pastor John Michaelson seems not returned, so when her friends in Texas send her a message to come out and help them, she goes and agrees to become a Pinkerton agent! Pastor Josh has a little secret of his own. He is an undercover Pinkerton agent himself and is called to Texas for a case and who does he find to be his partner? The lovely Madeleine who he had feelings for but had not been able to act upon them due to his undercover job. The two temporarily marry as required and their adventure begins! I have enjoyed this series and Jo Grafford always writes a wonderful tale that entertains and I always love!
Madeleine was in love with her pastor, but when her friends sent her a call for help, she kept the promise that she had made years prior and went to help them. When she became a Pinkerton agent and was required to marry a fellow agent, she agreed knowing that she would never be able to marry the man she had loved for a year. But she discovered that the Lord worked in mysterious ways, and she ended up married to Josh after all. Josh and Madeleine were able to execute a daring plan to solve the crimes that had been such a heavy burden over the surrounding areas for so long. Their love story was so sweet. I really enjoyed the entire series.
So good! Loved getting to know Madeleine and Josh's story. Madeleine secretly cared for the Pastor of her Church, but he hadn't given her the time of day. So, when her friend wrote she needed help, she decided to leave immediately. Josh was undercover as a pastor, and couldn't even think about meeting anyone. Till his next assignment lead him to the altar with the lovely Madeleine. If you like clean stories with intrigue and suspense, I highly recommend 'An Agent for Madeleine '. I received this book from the publisher. The thoughts and comments are my own.
A good clean romance: Madeleine and Josh have secretly been attracted to each other, but Josh wouldn't act on it as he was an undercover Pinkerton agent. Madeleine's friends send a SOS message from Texas and she leaves town. Josh gets a new assignment. To both their surprise, they are getting married, as Madeleine will become an agent to help her friends and their husbands in the cattle hustling case they are working.
A beautifully written story with well-developed characters, I would highly recommend it.
Another Pinkerton novel on the life and times of Madeleine and Pastor Josh. Pastor Josh was a fully ordained minister but he also worked undercover for the Pinkerton Agency. Madeleine was a young lady who help anyone who needed help in any way. Madeleine was summoned by her two friends to another town and after she leaves Josh is summoned to the same town for an undercover job . Thus is another great read on the lives and times of the Pinkerton days. This is my review and mine alone. Norma Gorrill
Madeleine is perfectly suited to Pastor Josh. He just doesn't know it. Summoned to Rockwood, Texas by her best friends ever, Madeleine is soon a Pinkerton recruit by Jack Gaines. She skillfully deduces her training partner to be is none other than Pastor Josh Michaelson who has followed her from Missouri. Josh's prayers have been answered. This is a well thought out and planned Pinkerton case involving characters from four previous books and that will make readers somewhat happy as this series early concludes.
So I love this story and especially love Pastor Josh and Madeleine, they are sweet characters who have huge hearts and the courage to fight to right wrongs. It is a fantastic finish to a great series. I would have given this book 5 stars but it finishes at 71%, I really, really hate books that are padded out with samples and teasers of other books. If I am at 70% of a book I think there is still a good 20% left with action, plot twists, etc, I don't expect to turn the page to 'the end'. It is so frustrating. I read this on Kindle Unlimited.
Madeline is in love with Pastor Josh, but he's married to his job. When Jolene and Lorelia ask her to come to TX to help with the cattle rustlers, she leaves. Josh is in love with Madeline too, but he's an undercover agent. He doesn't want to drag her into his line of work. When she leaves, he knows that she's going to a dangerous area. He is re-assigned and is the agent to marry Madeline to keep her safe and train her. The final book in the series. This was probably my favorite of the series.
Well, this Pinkerton story is somewhat different than the others in that Josh and Madeleine knew each other before she became an agent. Each of them travels to Texas, unbeknownst to the other, and there are married as is required of male and female agents working together. This story very quickly becomes exciting and fast moving as they work together to solve the cattle rustling case that has been so troubling. Very good story
Madeleine joins her 2 friends & the Pinkerton Agency. She & Josh have loved each other but have not talked about their feelings. Now they get married in order to find out the boss behind the cattle wrestling. I enjoyed how Madeleine figures it out & the 2 other couples plus a number of other agents catch him. This concludes the mystery. I received a copy from the author. This is my voluntary review.
I very much liked reading this story. Madeleine and Josh already held an affection for each other and when Madeleine is recruited to be a Pinkerton agent she is glad Josh is the agent she is to marry temporarily. But Josh has plans to make it forever but they have a mission to complete before he can tell her he loves her. I received a complimentary copy and I am voluntarily reviewing.
Fantastic characters! This was a wonderful story that I read entirely too fast. I was hooked from the first page and couldn’t put this down. Great sweet, clean romance with danger and action. This was a great book that has the reader wishing it didn’t have to end. Was given a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.
Always a God-fearing respectful woman Madeleine rushes to her friend's message to come quickly. Her on!y regret is leaving her pastor behind. Josh is in a funk missing the chance he never took to court her when he gets a summons to go to her location from the Pinkerton's!
What a great story and edition to the Pinkerton agent books. Madeline and Josh have feels for each other but never acted on them. So when Madeline leaves the town and Josh out of the blue, Josh knows he has kissed his chance. But life has a way of changing in the blink of a hat!
Oh, to be in love and thinking that it will never be returned, that was how Madeleine felt. But, things have a way of working out. There was action and adventure. This book is a pleasurable escape. Will the cattle rustler be caught, at long last?
Madeleine makes a great sacrifice by leaving behind a man she loves t keep her word to one of her dearest friends. Fun plot with great characters and an element of suspense. A good read.
I like the Pinkerton Matchmaker series. Madeleine story is great. She travels to Texas to help her two friends. She made a promise that if they every needed her she would come to them. I recommend this book.
I've really enjoyed this series and getting to know all the characters. I enjoyed that the characters flowed into the next books. I loved Josh and Madeleine’s story. These two are perfect for each other. A captivating read that I read straight through.
I didn't find book 1 of the series first. I highly recommend reading them in order. Gives more clarity to all of the relationships. Hope you write one more and find a bride for the primary agent.
I really enjoyed this book, along with the others in this series. Clean read with interesting story lines. Looking forward to reading other books by Movie Grace.
