Some dogs only have to look at you, and you know what they think. This was so the minute Alison set eyes on Joey, she was being judged.
From puppy training [for a ten-year-old dog] to Joey’s reactions when meeting strangers, this is a heart-warming tale of the connection that develops when you adopt a rescue dog. Together, they embark on a journey filled with laughter, joy, and unforgettable adventures as Joey becomes a beacon of happiness for those he encounters in real life and on social media.
Over the next nine years, they formed an unbreakable bond. If a dog can be a soulmate, Joey was it.
This heartwarming tale is told through the eyes of both Alison and Joey.
I loved Joey's story. Part written in Joey's voice, and part by Alison,it is a heartwarming story of an older rescue dog, and his wonderful life. It's also a bit of a travelogue, as the pair did plenty of visits round the UK. Definitely recommended. Any dog lover will love this book, but it's also a well-written story that anyone can enjoy.
I had just lost my dog when I started this book. She had been my " heart" dog and I had been leary about not waiting to read this book. I needn't had worried. The author is in a place in her life that rescuing 10 year old Joey was just what her life needed. And guess what? It was just what Joey needed also. I really enjoyed the author telling the story from hers and Joey's voice. It added much to the understanding of each perspective on what was going on. A side perk is that the author is a fan of camping and gives great descriptions of where she camps. Joey's bunnie jaunts are priceless. The book covers Joey's life with the author until the end. Joey's story is told with much love and the end of the book handled with a great deal of compassion. A tremendous read which is highly recommended.
This heartwarming story is about a rescue dog. Simple. But it contains so much more. Just Joey is a tale about two broken souls who mend together and develop an unbreakable bond.
After weathering emotional upheavals, the author decides that a dog will help get her life back on track. Opting for a mature rescue dog, her search begins. It’s at a kennel where a strange thing happens. Alison makes eye contact with a small dog. It’s Joey. A ten-year-old mongrel with a sad past. The adoption decision is made and quickly becomes fraught with challenges.
It can’t be easy to enter a new home at the age of ten. Joey is very little, very wilful and struggling with his own emotions. The author has taken on far more than she bargained for.
The story unfolds through Alison and Joey’s voices, which is fun and often incredibly touching. Descriptions of joining puppy training, Joey’s expertise as a mini Houdini, and ‘bopping bunnies’ had me in stitches. Equally, the accounts of places they visit and Joey's effect on others are revealing. There’s something very special about this boy and his ability to connect with vulnerable folks.
As a passionate animal lover, I love this honestly told true story. It packs a huge feel-good factor, which left me loving Joey, too.
What a lovely book this is. It's a beautiful tribute to a very special little dog with a big personality and heart. After being single for eight years Alison felt the time was right for her to have a dog, to share her life and bring a purpose to her days. Call it fate or chance but after meeting Joey she just knew that 10 year old Joey was coming home with her. I loved how the story of their years together was told by both Alison and Joey. Very cleverly Alison has captured his voice and personality perfectly. We see Alison's patience with Joey and the bond between them grow. I laughed at him being like Houdini as he loved exploring - and doing his own thing! He was such a lovely boy. Everywhere they went he attracted attention and made people smile. He loved camping with Alison and her partner David - but loved the beach when they moved home to a coastal area. Oh the zoomies he enjoyed there, and the things he found to eat and roll in. One of my favourite chaters was the description of their visit to Hawick in the Scottish borders. One particular action by Joey almost made me cry with laughter. After nine years the time came to say goodbye to Joey. It's always a heartbreak to say goodbye to a beloved pet and companion. Alison has told his story beautifully.
This delightful book is written as a tribute to Joey, a special older rescue dog that entered the author’s world and filled their lives with love and mischief. The special bond that the author had with Joey is lovingly shared on every page, as this book cleverly jumps between Alison and Joey telling their story. A dog that loved treats, zoomies, snoozing and exploring, Joey’s story will make you want to hug your own dog more closely, or even consider rescuing an older dog of your own. Highly recommended.
I was a beta reader for this book by Alison. I’d been following the author and Joey’s ‘antics’ on social media for some time 🙂. His ‘Zoomies’ videos were especially sweet. The book has been penned by Alison as a tribute to Joey - being a rescue dog won’t always be easy and especially an older rescue who is missing a previous owner and way of life. I know Alison struggled at times to put pen to paper given how much she misses ‘her boy’ - but all power to her elbow, she did it and it’s just lovely.
For anyone who loves dogs, especially rescues, I highly recommend this lovely book. Once I picked it up I struggled to put it down. A lovely heartwarming tale of Joey, a little rescue, and his antics and adventures, and the connection and bonding that developed between Joey and his Mom. The story is told through the eyes of both Alison (The Author) and joey. A beautiful read.
This was such a fun book alternating between human and dog talk. Do you have a pet—maybe you could keep a diary and think of what your pets might be saying. The poem near the end of the book, if I changed some words, could be a poem about my son who died a few months ago. Thanks Alison for writing this lovely story.
I was delighted to be invited to beta read this book-I enjoyed her first draft-but the author has made it into so much more, an excellent book. A lovely tribute to Joey, and a real pleasure to read.
Alison had been single for quite a while; it was time to get another dog to love, and love her back. If you liked Alyson Sheldrake's doggie memoir 'Kat the Dog'- this book is for you.
Events are recounted through both Alison's voice, and Joey's. I liked how she's captured the dog’s voice. It's not silly, or childish. Just perfect.
There's a lovely bit about when she goes to her house in Spain-that is covered in more detail in her 'Calamity Spain' book, which I've also enjoyed.
Alison's writing has a very likeable, chatty voice, which just makes you want to read more. Warm, friendly, well-told.
The book is nicely presented, with delightful little sketches of Joey at the beginning of some chapters.
I loved Alison's heart-warming story of those wonderful years with Joey. It will pull on your heartstrings, and make you smile.
