Ensign Morgan Selwood was almost too good at her job and far too casual about Fleet rules and regulations. Tasked with designing a control system for an untested attack fighter seemed like a dream come true and a real career booster. But the specs and modules tell only part of the story—what Morgan discovers can put not just her career, but lives at risk.

I am already a huge fan of Greta van der Rol’s work, and took that into account when reviewing Supertech the marvelous prequel to “Morgan’s Choice”.due out in June.. wanting to read and review without prior knowledge of just how good an author Great van der Rol is was impossible, my expectations were already running high after “The Iron Admiral” one of my all time favorite Science Fiction Novels.
I am always a little trepidatious when reading a favorite authors latest book, wanting it to be as good as its predecessor…I need not have worried; this one equals the ‘Admiral’ in every way, and the pacing is wonderful.
Meet Morgan Selwood; you won’t forget her after you are introduced; she is a character that gets into the psyche and raises more than a smile and your blood pressure... Tough, smart, resilient and in control of herself…as good a way as any to begin describing “Supertech” Morgan Selwood.
A ‘Supertech’ ? So what is a Supertech?
A Supertech, is bioengineered from birth, a living, breathing, complex and at times downright cantankerous woman with a supercomputer embedded in her brain.
Make no mistakes though, Morgan is all female and then some, added to that she also posseses an indredibly high IQ and attitude to spare! Her eyes are artificial so she can link wirelessly with a computer ; her eyes see so much more than a mere human can possibly see.
Most people can’t make direct eye contact with her, she simply will not back off or look away, her silvery mercurial eyes can take the ability to speak away especially in the male of any species.
She is one feisty woman, outspoken, and not a team player if less than honorable intentions are afoot, she will ensure that someone pays the price for any lack of integrity.
Fresh out of the Academy and tasked with designing a control system for an experimental fighter. Morgan's up for the challenge but far too intelligent to miss the links and apparent underhanded use of powerful connections in creating this fighter…live’s are at risk if she turns those silvery eyes away from the truth.
Fleet command invested in her education, making her the best of the best; but did they train her for ... this?
Author Greta Van der Rol takes you on a frantic, fast paced action packed ride into a murky world of science fiction laced with humor and intrigue.
A marvelous journey you will not forget anytime soon.
Do yourself a favor, buy it and enjoy. This one’s a keeper.
Too short! lol Yes, I knew it was a short story, still I wanted to read more. Great way to hook the reader. I loved her attitude. Her smart mouth often got her into trouble. There's something appealing about that. I rooted for her throughout the too-short story.
This is my first time reading this author. I was recommended Morgan's Choice and saw that this book is free on Barnes & Noble and is #0.5 and thought it might help with back story. Well I hope it helps with back story. It's about Morgan who is an off-kilter Supertech (implanted with super genes and I guess a computer type system at birth?). She's been sent to a very boring place and is finally given a job she likes, duplicating a plane/jet's engine/computer system?. The only problem is the plane's frame is substandard and no one will listen to her. She tries to go around her commander and still it's going forward. There's an evil Admiral too. There's also a "give me a break" ending. It makes me want to hold off reading Morgan's Choice now until I've read some other books I might enjoy more. I think I'll do that.
Johnny Mneumonic becomes female and hot and goes to space. "I’m better than a tame Supertech because I’m sneaky," says Morgan Selwood, and that about summarizes the entire story very nicely. This piece is a fabulous nod to the best of cyber science fiction, allowing the reader plenty of room to revel in the hard-core sci fi environment and to ponder some serious questions at the same time. Computers already rule so much of our lives. Our interfaces become increasingly advanced. But what if, instead of employing an advanced interface with the machine and the network, one actually BECAME the interface and got really, really, really good at it? "Supertech" presents a potential answer to that question with a few spooky alternatives to ponder.
Morgan was placed on the backwater maintenance base facility Gens Brasna to conduct routine checkouts and calibrations on fleet vessels. Her Commander calls her in one day with a new assignment - to develop the control system for a new fighter. On closer inspection, the new fighter isn't all it seems. The main question is: what is Morgan going to do about what she uncovers?
I absolutely loved this short story, and it definitely left me hankering for more of van der Rol's writing, which is vivid and enthralling. She had me right there with Morgan, feeling her frustrations and anxieties. A fabulous quick read.
3 1/2 stars for a very nicely done futuristic novella about a Supertech named Morgan Selwood, a bioengineered technician who's assigned to a backwater station but then given a huge assignment of designing a control system for an experimental fighter - with potentially shoddy materials. Morgan's a great character - smart, focused, passionate, willing to stand up for her beliefs. The scifi setting of this series is very interesting, and I'm eager to read from this author.
Nicely paced and well crafted SF short story. I particularly liked the way that the main character's remarkable abilities don't interfere with her humanity. The social / political / economic background is also well worked out and consistent. The story is complete in itself, but also provides a good starting point for more in the series (the Kindle edition has an extract that does a good job of whetting the appetite!)
This was a really nice short story. I dug the idea of a supertech and I liked Morgan's strong spirit and honest character. I was pretty pleased to read at the end that there was more written for her. I bought it for my nook just now. =D
It only took me a few days to read it because a new Harry Dresden book came out. Otherwise I'd have finished it much sooner. :)
