Oh. My. Gawd!!!! Could there be a more griping cliffhanger than this?! Gah! Charmaine Pauls is a cruel devil and I love her for it!

Victoria Falls Fees & Costs: Be Prepared For Your Visit - TourRadar

I loved the way Ian was obsessed with making Cas his and keeping her. He’s a wonderful anti-hero with a strong protective streak. However, he was never so over the top that he didn’t relent when it came to freedoms that Cas needed. With every new thing that was revealed about him, I fell more in love with him.

May be an image of mosquito net

While Cas made a few decisions that had my gut in knots, I understood where she was coming from. She’s an extremely strong, brave heroine that never wavered on what she wanted from Ian and made sure he understood where she was coming from.

Animated GIF

While Ian and Cas are working through their issues within their relationship, I was falling in love with not only everything about them, but their locale. It felt as though the location was as much a character in this story as the hero and heroine. Add in a bit of jealousy, danger and drama and that knot in my gut consumed me. Which of course all led to that amazingly cruel and heartless cliffhanger. Thank goodness the next book is releasing soon!

Nice twist ending for a cliffhanger!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Pauls is a master of dark, edgy, dominant bad boys that you cannot help but fall for. Ian is a perfect example and he steps it up even more in this story.
In Stolen Life, Pauls bring us parts of the story which are a bit uncomfortable but also so hot and sexy. It is also is the calm before the storm.
She set us up with a little bit of mundane life and we start to get used to it. The connection between the two is burning strong. The trust is building. And it’s easy to get comfortable with the story.
But you know somethings going to happen and a little foreshadowing leads us slightly down the garden path but what really happens at the cliffhanger is something spectacular for sure.
You certainly learn who not to trust in the story. A perfect blend of intensity, passion, and a little bit of that at the edge of your seat anxiety because you know something’s coming.
Just when you think your heart can’t take any more pounding, Paul’s continues to keeps us on edge and it’s so worth it! OMG that ending!!!!!
Fabulous second book. I must admit I loved the first book but sometimes the middle book in a trilogy tends drag a little. Well not this one.
I loved this one. Ian and Cas are perfect for each other. Ian has accepted Cas was his from the minute he saw her. Cas comes to the realisation that she’s happy with Ian and gives him her heart.
And they all lived happily ever after?
Not quite.
I hated a couple of the things Cas did towards the end even calling her stupid several times. But this is not a spoiler review so you’ll have to find out for yourselves.
On finishing this book apparently I said “Oh you bitch” out loud. Sorry Charmaine but that’s one hell of a cliffhanger to throw at a poor unsuspecting reader.
Gah!! That cliffhanger!! I can usually handle cliffhangers but this one is pure torture. If I had the next book, I would stay up all night to continue because I’ve got to know what happens next.
This series has me enthralled. I’m loving Ian and Cas more and more. Cas was brilliant in this 2nd book. I love how clever she is and how she stands up for herself. Ian is just fascinating. He’s so intense and his obsession with Cas is addictive.
I’m going to counting down the days until the release of book 3!
I thought Stolen Lust was heart pounding, but I was wrong because Stolen Life just gave my heart a jumpstart, I didn’t know it needed!! I’m still trying to come to my senses on what happened toward the end because I was not expecting that.
Ian knew he had to protect Cas because he brought the danger to her and now that she’s in his “territory” and has plenty of eyes on her, he can breather a little easier. The thing is that you can never be too sure that the danger that is lurking on the edge won’t hesitate to cross where it’s not wanted.
Cas’s heart had no chance to protect itself from Ian because he came in like a raging storm determined to break down the walls, she built around it. As she speaks with those who are loyal to Ian she knows that she has to appreciate the time she has with him because people like Ian sometimes don’t get to choose how long they can live. And Ian, despite the hard outer appearance you'll see the real Ian shine through with Cas!
The closer I got to the end the more my poor heart hurt because I had a feeling that this was not going to end well and let me tell you………... you’ll have to click to find out because I’m not going to spoil it for you.
Get ready because one you start you won’t want to stop until you get to the end! Unbelievably amazing Charmaine Pauls! I’m patiently waiting for Stolen Love! Kara~ 5 Unbelievably Amazing Stars
My Review
Oh my god, that finish I need the rest of this like right this minute my heart is pounding like it’s going to burst from my chest.
What a way to leave me hanging I’m speechless the last twenty percent of this the sense of dread I was feeling intensified and built with every word and page read.
Oh, Ian surely your not going to blow everything no matter how bad it actually looks you know Cas and as for Ruben I actually hate him with a bloody passion.
I’m choosing to believe that Ian didn’t realise what was going down here with Ruben please don’t disappoint me, Ian.
Also, how is Cas ever going to forgive or trust Ian ever again and I’m not even thinking of the deeper consequences of all this either burying my head here folks.
Ian, you have a hard road ahead of you my love and I hope Cas gives you absolute hell lots of grovelling needed for sure.
This second instalment kicks off where we left things previously with Cas drugged kidnapped and now in Ian’s home in Zimbabwe.
She actually took things much better than I was expecting it’s actually Ian that seems to be struggling more with letting Cas into the inner workings of his criminal lifestyle under a misguided attempt to protect her.
Cas loves the open spaces she’s in her element and soon makes herself a favourite of the locals with her warm and easy attitude.
If it wasn’t for Ruben she’d feel completely at ease, but there’s something about him that puts her on edge.
And just when she’s feeling like maybe happiness is finally hers for the taking everything starts to implode and bloody hell it was intense.
Totally loving this series so far, this book has surpassed the previous for me but man my nerves are shot I’m definitely going to be on absolute pins waiting for the final instalment.
Totally recommend this you won’t be disappointed.
Okay. I’m going to be really honest here.
The first book wasn’t my favorite. I struggled believing the instant lust and attraction between the two main characters and struggled to finished the first book of this series. HOWEVER! Book two?! Oh my god! I couldn’t stop! It was everything that I wanted and expect out of Charmaine Pauls writing.
So book two starts right off where book one ends, with Ian using a tranquilizer on Cas kidnapping her and ends up waking up in Zimbabwe. Oh yes. And the beautiful picture that Charmaine builds for us is breathtaking with all the animals, people, and culture.
Cas takes her kidnapping considerably well since we know there’s an intense and attraction between the both of them, she however does not appreciate all of the rules that Ian put in place. And let me tell you, Cas refuses to follow them. It’s quite humorous seeing her strong will go against such a dominant man like Ian. His brother and best friend though? They have different thoughts in Cas. And it’s a spiral of drama in itself.
I however love the dark romance part of this trilogy. Ian Hart is a possessive and charming and oh so sexy character.
“You’re mine. You have been from the moment I saw you, and you will until I blow out my last breath. Nothing is going to change that. “Just because I love the sound of it, I repeat, “You’re mine. “
Cas realizes that she’s an accomplice and is willingly deciding to stay towards the end of the book.
“I’m not going to turn a blind eye to what he does. I’m going into this with my eyes wide open. I carry full responsibility for loving a criminal.”
And then..
“Deep down, I always knew he was my other half on this earth.”
This story leaves off on an incredible cliffhanger. With friendships possibly breaking, betrayal, heartbreak... my jaw hit the floor on the last chapter.
I’ll be hyperventilating till book three comes out.
I really, really liked this book.
The book picks off exactly at the point book 1 ended.
Cliffhanger ending ready for book 3
Lovely detail about South Africa, very atmospheric, really painted a picture of the area, the wild life.
The Hero is besotted with the heroine.
The heroine has lost all her choices, he's kidnapped her, partly to save himself but also to rescue her.
I did feel a bit frustrated at the old mills and boon move, that despite the situation she can't resist when he touches her.
Huge humdinger of a cliffhanger ending.
Spoiler..
He needs to really make things up to her in book 3 if that's possible, he's crossed a line that I'm wondering if he uncross.
Hurry up book 3.
My heart won’t give me another choice. It may be the weakest organ in my body, but it has always had the strongest will. That’s what fighting does. It makes you strong.
This was WAY better than the first book! Ian’s obsession with taking care of Cas is heart melting. Their pasts are slowly revealed and they start to fall in love, rather than lust.
The descriptions of Zimbabwe, the animals, the village, the side characters, were simply beautiful. I loved the story of the River God of Zambezi, Nyami Nyami.
I only get to give my heart away once. Like Nyami Nyami loves his wife, I’ll love Ian forever.
I had huge issues with their mid-coitus condom use. I hope some teenage girl doesn’t read this story and think that is how you practice safe sex.
The absurd cliffhanger and horrible things that happen to Cas seemed such overkill. Really? She had to have ALL those bad things happen, rather than just one? Needless to say, I downloaded the third in the series because there was NO WAY I could stop after that cliffhanger. But I guess that’s the money making point of cliffhangers.
Stolen Life is the second book in the Beauty in the Stolen trilogy by Charmaine Pauls and it was heartbreaking, action-packed, and full of raw passion between our two main characters. It immediately picks up right after the events of Stolen Lust so this cannot be read as a standalone. Cas has been kidnapped by Ian and forced to become his "prisoner" once again... or is she? As mentioned before, Cas and Ian have a complicated relationship that was previously built on fear and lust. He wanted to protect and keep her safe but only allowed her certain freedoms as long as she earned his trust. It's incredibly messed up and I was initially dismayed by his actions since this was not the way to go if you wanted someone you potentially loved to be happy.
"I want her heart, and when I have that, I'd want a piece of her soul… I can never have enough of her."
This book had a different feel to the previous one because Ian and Cas' relationship gradually transforms into one that can potentially be called love. It's dark and twisted but they are each other's soulmates and I don't believe they can live happily without each other. Ian, who is usually calm and collected, becomes engulfed in jealousy and anger whenever Cas is concerned. The cast of characters does expand to several side ones who make Cas' time in Ian's compound much more liberating and bearable. We also learn more about Leon and Ruben—I frankly despise the latter and hope he gets what's coming to him.
"He may have stolen my affection like the thief he is, but I gave my heart freely."
In the end, Stolen Life was an absolutely gut-wrenching and amazing installment to the first book and will have you screaming for more—because I certainly am. Charmaine Pauls throws us another tearful cliffhanger that broke my heart and caused me to go in denial. To those of you who have read Zoe and Maxime's story, I would say that it mirrors the cliffhanger in Diamonds in the Rough. The repercussions of this ending are unimaginable. I don't know how they can come back from this but I know that Charmaine will blow our minds anyway. Ian and Cas' story will have you on the edge of your seat but trust me, it's completely worth it. I highly recommend this trilogy to those who love complex and multi-dimensional characters with a romance that is incredibly passionate, twisted, and erotic. I loved it and can't wait to read the conclusion to Ian and Cas' story in Stolen Love.
I was void of all the words when I read Stolen Lust last month. So void that I completely skipped reviewing the book. What more could I possibly say about the power behind the words that Charmaine gifts us with that I haven’t already said? I would walk on fire to read one of her stories. She is a master at giving us flawed characters with journeys that are never easy nor black and white. She is a master at redeeming even the most depraved of souls. Her stories live outside the norms of romance fiction as I have experienced it and they are glorious!
The journey of Ian and Cas is … unstable, passionate, charged, unpredictable (never let your guard down lol), erratic and heart pounding from beginning till, I am more than sure, the end. The ending to this installment is not exactly unpredictable because something huge has to happen in order to justify a trilogy but using huge as a descriptor to what happed is child’s play. What happened is pure fuckery in all its glory. I mean … what the actual fuck is even happening?! Honestly, as many times as I have been down this road with Charmaine, I am stupefied. *blink*
I don’t really have any more to tell you. I didn’t even want to tell you this much if I’m being honest. There are a lot of pockets to Ian and Cas's story. A lot happens between them and to them, throughout their journey and I just thought it'd be best to wait until the trilogy completed to say anything at all, but I’m a blogger so … Hopefully this will be enough for anyone new to Charmaine’s worlds to entice them into reading. She is a vibrant force with her words and it is an experience no one should miss.
Let me start by saying, this book and this series holds a special place in my heart. It took me back to my earlier homeland of Botswana & Zimbabwe. These places are home, the people my friends and the language & customs enveloped me like a warm blanket.
description
Then comes the skilful writing by charmaine who creates this volatile and turbulent love story in the backdrop of serene and peaceful natural environment. You're standing in the jungles of Zimbabwe, staring at the Zambezi river, but Charmaine never lets your guard down.
description
"Sins and wicked deeds happen in the dark. In the shadows that give way to night, I steal what’s left of her resistance, taking her pleasure like a thief and owning it like it’s my right."
The story and landscape are full of predators of all kinds. From crocs to rabid baboons to vily arms dealers to conniving casino owners. There's thrilling heist and robberies right alongside thumping African drums and thumping feet around the campfire. There's love and betrayal side by side. Distrust and total commitment all in the same breath. Growth and debilitation swim along together in Rapids of Zambezi.
"My heart won’t give me another choice. It may be the weakest organ in my body, but it has always had the strongest will. That’s what fighting does. It makes you strong."
description
The ending is stunning, left me speechless. I did not see that coming!!
"In hindsight, our violent start couldn’t end in a different way. I hoped for a fairy tale, but villains don’t make heroes. I forgot about the most important rule my dad taught me. You reap what you sow."
The story swallowed me whole in its lusty warmth and icy danger and I'm still reeling with its impact.
Unforgettable and unique, It's an intoxicating experience which will leave you hungry for more
#WriteCharmaineWrite, I'm already having separation anxiety already!!
I was anxious to read book two in this beautiful, exceptionally written series, and Charmaine Pauls delivered in spades and with heartbreaking precision.
Cas and Ian are once again battling turmoil and outside influence. Ian is focused and zeroed in on Cas, she is "the one" for him, he has taken her with no remorse or regrets. But Cas is struggling with emotional upheaval, morals, floundering with right and wrong. Physically, she is attracted to Ian, but can she fully trust him and live the life he is providing for her?
This couple is destined to be divided, either by each other or the antagonizing people in their circle. Exactly like the river that is divided by the dam, separating the couple, to live their lives apart and with longing to be together again.
Stolen Life is all encompassing in its past, present, and future. It begs the reader to perceive the anguish, the emotion, and the devastation of love given, taken and thrown away.
I don't know how to react after this one- that cliffhanger has me messed up.
I really enjoyed this book. The writing was just so good- the way that the setting was described, and how their romance developed- I'm obsessed. I'm still reeling over that ending, and am genuinely so upset about all the things that happened to Cas- but I can't wait to see where their story goes from here.
First of all, Stolen Life takes place in Victoria Fall, Zimbabwe. This place holds dear to my heart because I am from Zimbabwe. Charmaine Paul, I applaud you because you wrote a book set in a place that means so much to me. You featured a part of my culture and all its folklore to add such a captivating layer to a fantastic story. I am proud. Thank you, Charmaine Pauls. That's all I can say. Thank you!!!!!!!
Secondly, Charmaine Pauls, you are one evil woman. Omg!!!!!!!!!!1 Holy cliffhanger. I am so angry with you. How can you leave me like this? We need to have some words. Hahaha. You are evil but you are also brilliant. I need a drink. Stolen Life is freaking train going up and up until you lose all your senses. Heart Pumping. Sensual. Dark. Stolen Life is a tantalizing suspense, addictive characters and a thrilling captive romance that will leave you breathless. Wow. Wow. Stolen Life is both hard hitting and heart revving dark deliciousness. Every single word was simply intoxicating.
I adore Ian and Cass. Cass is a strong woman who has been dealt with a hard life but she has risen above to be a capable woman who is both beautiful and incredibly independent despite her when trouble comes to her. Ian is dark, possessive with a lair of danger that is a perfect personality for Cass. Both Ian and Cass have insane chemistry and they take you deep into their web and make you fall in love with them.
Charmaine Pauls, I need Stolen Love. I NEED IT ASAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Charmaine Pauls is a beautiful writer but the Book 2 endings of her trilogies are devilishly cruel. This one is NO EXCEPTION!
Ian Hart couldn’t help himself. He should have stuck to daring bank and casino heists. But, no. He had to steal Cassandra Joubert, because after he met her and held her and cared for her, his lust wouldn’t leave her be. Now the authorities who are hunting Ian are pursuing Cas as well, and he has no choice but to kidnap her. Again!
“She wasn’t just made for me physically. She’s my match in every way.”
Book 2 reveals the dangers and the marvels of a fugitive’s life on the shores of the Zambezi River, a stone’s throw from Victoria Falls. Charmaine Pauls’ imagery and imagination takes me on a stunning journey and makes me wish to see the people, food and places up close.
“Ian is more than my fantasy. He’s my dream man come true.”
I love Cas’ strength, intelligence and independence. I love how she fell In love with a criminal but has good insight and acceptance of her own feelings. Ian is smouldering and worthy in his own way. Ian and Cas are a matched set and are perfect together. But be warned ... there’s an epic and unbelievably wicked cliffhanger ahead!
“I only get to give my heart away once. Like Nyaminyami loves his wife, I’ll love (Ian) forever. It may be the weakest organ in my body, but it has always had the strongest will.”
Oh man- I was not expecting this book to take this turn- Charmaine has given us a decidedly different tone and pace to this captivating trilogy. Whereas book one was all menacing danger, fast paced action, and instalust,book 2 picks up from our epic cliffhanger and continues the story in an entirely different, but deeply satisfying, vein. The pace is slow, intimate, the prior danger distant while new dangers loom, and lust starts to make way for genuine emotion and emotional vulnerability. Of course, we still have the characteristic Charmine heat- yowzers, and we still have the volatile passion between them- but Ian and Cas’s story takes a welcome detour into something swoony, something beautifully emotional, almost idyllic. It’s a fresh and consuming take on the kidnapping trope Charmaine has perfected- and I was all about it.
While I enjoyed book one, I was craving a deeper connection between Ian and Cas-and Charmaine REALLY delivers on that here. Whisked away to Ian’s African hideaway to protect her, it forces both of these characters to come to terms with the nature of their connection. Their physical relationship is sizzling, but now we get to see them forge a more substantive relationship- one that not only pushes them to address the proverbial elephant in the room - the nature of Ian’s “job” and if there is room for Cas in his world...or if Cas could ever accept who he is. But we also get to seem them more richly as characters- removed from the fast paced action, we get to slow down and discover them more as people. Cas’s compassion, her maturity and her integrity. And we get to see Ian’s vulnerability- his true heart. We get to see his goodness, his generosity, the heart behind his alpha possessiveness. And OH MY GOSH- i don’t think I've loved a Charmaine man more- he’s so open hearted, so emotionally transparent in this story, my heart could barely take it! He’s alpha, and controlling- but also emotional. It’s a magnetic combination. Even better- we see them start to form a healthy partnership- one born out of choice and compromise, one that is communicative and respectful, and one that feels profoundly stable despite the chaos of their courting. And, we still have some dirty steamy times, too.
I would also be remiss to not comment on how Charmaine so beautifully and richly creates a sense of place in this book. The setting is so vividly captured- descriptive, enchanting, immersive. I can smell the air, hear the bugs chirping, feel the warm air and sweat on my brow, the dust in the air. The power of it crackles, there is a palpable energy that enhances the energy flowing between our characters-and mirrors the contrasting nature of their relationship. The familiar within the exotic, the safety within the danger, the intimacy within expansive space, the simplicity with the complexity. Ians home, the village, the wildlife and wilderness, are a character in and of themselves and a picture perfect backdrop to the evolving story between Cas and Ian. Charmaine not only captures our hearts with all the feels, but she also transports us so compellingly to Ian’s sanctuary - just a really smart and well written use of setting.
Of course, this blissful steadiness in the provincial African village oasis has to be rocked but some devastating and engrossing, though predictable, end of book twists that leave us with a cliffhanger that has me desperate and heartbroken. I was interested in this love story after book one, now I am RAVENOUS. I NEED BOOK 3!
I previously reviewed Stolen Lust and said that was my favourite book of the year so far. I now replace that with Stolen Life. This book was so good. I read it through in one go without stopping. This book continued the story and explored all the contradictions and hesitations Cas has about Ian. While at the same time making you (and her) fall deeper in love with him.
I will give a warning, I am not good with cliffhangers and this book has a big one. It is a scream-out- loud-throw-your-Kindle-across-the-room-punch-Ian-in-the-face kinda ending. As with Book 1, I was left thinking about Stolen Life for hours after I'd finished it and I'm not sure i can still quite put in to words how much I loved it and why. But I am thanking the book heavens its not that long until the 3rd book is released next month.
I adore Cas in this story. She shows such determination and strength in the face of a deeply controlling and obsessive lover. Despite the kidnapping (and kidnapping again!) it feels like their relationship is mutual and develops through her choice. She flourishes under his touch and fights back when she needs. She pushes Ian's boundaries and forces his hand where necessary. I know this can be seen as sugar coating the reality of the story (obsession and control) but in truth this is a romance novel and it is fantasy and Ian is a dark and dangerous criminal. I was happy to get caught up in the chemistry, dirty talking and darkness of it all. He was pretty irresistible in that underworldy alpha way of his (and what is it with his hair- I was obsessed with the descriptions of his haircut).
I loved that this story moved the characters to the village and community near Victoria Falls where Cas was able to establish herself and have purpose. She was more than a kidnapped woman confined within Ian's 4 walls. She earned respect and proved herself an equal to Ian.
I am utterly in love with these books and with Charmaine Pauls. I love that I now have an entire back catalogue to devour while waiting for Stolen Love. I have so many questions left to get the answers to.......
Vita Rubata è il secondo volume della travolgente storia di Ian e Cassandra. Questo secondo capitolo è pazzesco! Riprende da dove si era interrotto il primo, e non ci dà tregua fino al finale da infarto!!!
L'autrice qui, non ha pietà di noi😅 ci fà vivere mille emozioni diverse, adrenalina pura, tradimenti, corruzione, segreti, angst, non riuscivo a staccarmi dal Kindle.
L'attrazione e la passione travolgente che crescono sempre di più tra i protagonisti sono qualcosa di straordinario e unico. (Peccato per alcuni ostacoli e gli "amici"/ nemici che tramano alle spalle).
Questa volta siamo nel territorio di Ian, dove si nasconde insieme a suo fratello Leon e Ruben, e la gente del villaggio con cui Cas riuscirà ad instaurare un bellissimo rapporto di collaborazione e stima.
E a parte il meraviglioso Ladro gentiluomo, Ian. Io ho amato tantissimo Cassandra, un' eroina degna di questo nome, lei che ha perso così tanto nella vita, non perde mai tempo a deprimersi o a fare la vittima, è sempre combattiva, prende sempre in mano la situazione con coraggio e determinazione. Bellissima e di un intelligenza e astuzia fuori dal comune, e questo Ian l'ha capito dal primo istante in cui ha posato gli occhi su di lei, ed è disposto a tutto per proteggerla e non perderla.
Ma il finale è qualcosa di impensabile, un colpo al cuore💔
Charmaine Pauls, è stata davvero straordinaria nella caratterizzazione dei personaggi, sia quelli principali che quelli secondari, hanno avuto tutti un ruolo importante e funzionale alla riuscita della storia.
Magnifica e affascinante la descrizione vivida dell'Africa, con gli animali e la natura selvaggia e incontaminata, sembrava di stare là ad ammirare le cascate e i tramonti da sogno.
Lettura imperdibile !!!
Reader beware, Stole Life, book two in the Beauty in the Stolen series, will mesmerize you from the first word till the very last word and leave you wanting more as Pauls delivers one heck of a cliffhanger. One can only wonder how Ms. Pauls will top this second book, but if you are a fan of her books, you know pretty well that she will do just that! I have said this many times in my other reviews of her books; Pauls is the master of the dark romance genre, but it’s just not the intense romance that will grab you in this series; the suspense might drive you crazy, in the best way possible. If you have not read the first book in this trilogy, Stolen Lust, stop now, and read it!
Stolen Life seamlessly begins where Stolen Lust left off-- with Ian drugging and kidnapping Cas, bring her to his home in Zimbabwe.
“…I could only do what was always destine to happen. I could only steal more, not simply a few more hours of her time but her life.” Ian Hart
I loved the personal transformation that Ian and Cas develop, independent of one another and together as a couple. Slowly Cas realizes that Ian is the one for her, but she still gives Ian a run for his money, bucking him at every turn and proving that she is his equal. I loved how Pauls had Ian slowly open up and share his past with Cas, some of which was dark and troubling to read but so necessary to get to know the true Ian.
“I’ll give her these difficult parts of myself to make up for what I can’t give her—a choice.” Ian
Pauls shows us the man beyond the most notorious criminal in the country. We see that underneath the dark, dominant scary man, there is gentleness and a deep love for the community and people he surrounds himself. And, of course, the crazy intense attraction these two have for each other continues and becomes in a sense deeper and more soulful.
“When I accept to love our darkness as much as I love what’s good between us, peace dawns. There’s no more judgment, no mind wrestling…There’s only my heart…my heart has always been all that matters.” Cas
In true Pauls’ fashion, disaster is just a moment away, and she doesn’t hold back. She combines deceit, treachery, jealously, betrayal, and heartbreak; all rolled into one incredible cliffhanger. I was in total shock, so much so that I had to go back and read it two more times, with my mouth hanging open. WHY Charmain… WHY??? I now consider Pauls the master of the cliffhanger; she is a deviously cruel and a fantastic writer. But no worries, we won’t have to wait long; Stolen Love (Beauty in the Stolen #3) is due to be published on June 22nd, 2021.
Ms. Pauls gives us a well-written book that is the perfect blend of edgy, dark romance and suspense that will keep you turning the pages and wraps it all up in her magical description of Botswana and Zimbabwe. I highly recommend this series; you will not be disappointed.
A(nother) watery cliffhanger
After book 1, Stolen Lust, ended with Ian upping the ante and kidnapping Cas for real (ostensibly for her own good), Stolen Life starts with the difficulties attached to keeping Cas a quasi prisoner without chaining her to the bed. Keeping her confined is helped by the fact that Ian took her to his remote hideout (a former Safari lodge) in Zimbabwe from where escape seems difficult, if not impossible. Although there is a community near the lodge, the inhabitants are beholden to Ian for providing for a clinic and a school for the community, hence they are loyal to him. So that’s like the baseline situation.
Cas is still intensely attracted to Ian, so in the bedroom at least there are no problems. But Cas is not one to sit around idly, so when Ian loosens the reigns of control, Cas involves herself with farm work in the community. Having been her father’s assistant on her parents’ farm has provided her with a well of experience, which she utilizes to help the locals. As she is not afraid to get her hands dirty and work hard, she comes to gain their respect.
Though I felt the middle part dragged a little, I liked the contest of wills Ian and Cas had going; her trying to get more freedoms, while he was trying to determine how far he could trust her. Soon they come to realize that their feelings run much deeper than mere lust, but just as it seems they finally will come to trust each other implicitly and are on the cusp of uttering the L-word, things unravel spectacularly. It all comes down to outside influences, trust that is tenuous at best, and a lack of communication. Although Cas is not without fault in how things go off the rails, I would put the onus of blame on Ian; after how he disrupted Cas’ life, he should at least given her the chance to explain herself.
The book ends in a heartbreaking and watery cliffhanger; I cannot wait to find out how Ian comes back from what he did to Cas and if Cas will be able to forgive him. Overall 4 ½ stars.
16/5/21 OK LEMME JUST PROCESS THAT ENDING. U DID NOT DO THAT PAULS. I- FUCK WHEN IS THE NEXT BOOK RELEASING!?
17/5/21
I received an ARC in exchange for a very honest review.
And I have one word for it- MARVELLOUS.
I associate a certain sort of home feeling with Hart siblings. Each one of them holds a very special place in my heart and shelf. And even the small tidbits on Zoe and Damien legit made me wanna cry cause I bloody want a reunion of the Hart sibling soo bad. They are probably my most favourite and important Mafia Family. They are just everything. And Ian talking about them was so special, so significant— My poor beart can't.
Ian and Cas were back with bang. The story starts exactly were the last left off. Have to day it was paced absolutely brilliantly. 💯
I have no complaints with the book except tha cliffhanger. Like Pauls how do u expect me to wait till June. The pain of a cliffhanger is real.
Ian and Cas have this amazing sort of chemistry. I absolutely love their dynamic. The whole badass power couple vibes were very noticeable and appreciated. Its rare in mafia books to have a badass asf girl who is also smart asf. And Pauls always nails it. And she did it right fucking again with Cas.
Cas negotiating is just one of my most favourite scenes in the entire book.
I love how Paul's adds Zimbabwean mythology and setting into the story. This added this whimsical sort of feeling to the story. The parellels between their story and Nyaminyami and his wife's story. The necklace was such a sweet scene. I loved it.
The added characters add more a different and much needed perspective into Ian & Cas.
I can't say enough about the pleasure and pain this book gave me. Nope!
I don't want to spoil the book for anyone but my god the ending ripped me apart. I cannot wait for more of Ian and Cas.
Original review
This book was provided by the author through Give Me Books Promotions in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Charmaine Pauls and Give Me Books Promotions!
Stolen Life is the second book in the Beauty in the Stolen series and continues the story of Cassandra and Ian.
I’m a criminal, the most wanted man on the continent, and this time I stole myself not money or jewels but a woman. My woman.
I remember enjoying Stolen Lust and when I got my hands on an ARC of Stolen Life, I was so excited. And I’m happy to say that Stolen Life was even better than Stolen Lust. This book was so addictive, I had to know what was going to happen and how the book was going to end. I also really love that this book is set in South Africa and that our main character, Cassandra, has a heart condition. These details make the book better and more interesting and original, in my opinion.
I really love Cassandra, or Cas, because she’s so strong and she knows what she wants. And Ian also knows what he wants and that’s Cas. But besides the kidnapping part, I think that Ian is so much more than you would think. I think he’s thoughtful and protective, and I love that about him. There were also some moments that were really sweet. I really love Cas and Ian together!
And like every second book in a trilogy, Stolen Life ended with a cliffhanger. When I finished reading the last chapter, I was staring at the wall. I didn’t know what to think of it, and I still don’t know what to think of it. What I do know is that I need the third book, Stolen Love, ASAP! Stolen Life was an amazing Romance read and I’m really enjoying this series. I cannot wait to read Stolen Love, but I’m also a bit sad because it’s going to be the last book in the trilogy.
Another great installment to the series! Ian just seems a bit different in this part, its nice to see him ready to move forward in the relationship with Cas and not hold back. With the cliffy tha Charmaine left us, I'll be back in June to read the finale in this series! Can't wait! Love this cover!
Nayeli - per RFS
.
La fisso, distesa nel mio letto, questa donna stupenda che ho rapito. Ho rubato di tutto nella mia vita, tanti soldi, gioielli e auto, persino cibo e libri quando ero giovane, ma non avevo mai rubato una persona. Dovrei provare molte emozioni – senso di colpa, rimorso e disgusto – ma avverto solo il dolce sapore del possesso.
Il secondo episodio della trilogia ci racconta della fase della prigionia di Cas, quando Ian la tiene al sicuro dalla polizia nella sua fattoria in un parco naturalistico nello Zambia, ai piedi delle cascate Vittoria.
“Non saresti dovuta scappare,” mi dice con tono cupo. Quando alzo lo sguardo mi sta fissando come il leone ha guardato la leonessa, come se avesse voluto piantarle le zanne nella spalla e tenerla ferma mentre le sparava un’altra cucciolata nel ventre.
Ian ha un comportamento un po’ ambiguo: continua a essere ossessionato da Cas, ha una cotta stratosferica, non c’è niente che non farebbe per lei, ma allo stesso tempo capisce che non c’è tempo per lasciarle la libertà di scelta in modo che arrivi da sola a capire che stare con lui nel rifugio sicuro è fondamentale per la sua sicurezza. Per quanto si incolpi per averla coinvolta così tanto e aver interferito con l’equilibrio di una vita felice, adesso non può esimersi dalla responsabilità di occuparsi di lei e di proteggerla dai pericoli esterni.
Alza la testa di scatto e ha un sussulto. L’attimo si sospende quando i nostri occhi si incontrano. La terra smette di girare. Il tempo si stiracchia fragile tra di noi. Questioni irrisolte penzolano in aria come bolle di vetro. Non respiro. Un solo fiato può spezzare il filo sottile che tiene sospese le bolle e pavimentare la nostra strada di pericolose schegge di vetro. Poi lei sorride. Un sorriso. Per me. Significa così tanto. Non è un sorriso timido, né un sorriso semplice. È un gesto complesso colmo di piacevole sorpresa, gioia genuina e vaga ritrosia. È un gesto bellissimo, e con quel singolo, complesso sorriso, accalappia il mio cuore. È suo.
Per questo motivo deve impedirle di scappare sperando di presentarle un mondo talmente bello e appagante da convincerla a restare senza più opporsi (finché non si fiderà di lui, insomma).
Ian mantiene quindi atteggiamenti minacciosi e coercitivi che hanno anche lo scopo di rassicurare gli altri due membri della banda (che non sono affatto favorevoli a tenere in vita una testimone riluttante) della sua capacità di avere il controllo della situazione. Ian sottolinea il fatto di essere un uomo cattivo e disposto anche a uccidere, se lei lo tradirà.
Mi libero dalla sua presa con uno strattone. “Non puoi far finta che io sia tutto per te quando scopiamo e poi trattarmi come un nessuno qualsiasi la mattina dopo. Non funziona così.” Entra nel mio spazio personale. “Funzionerà in qualunque modo io decida.”
A questo si alternano però la devozione dei momenti passionali e altri più intimi in cui si culla nella speranza di avere un futuro insieme, un per sempre con tanto di famiglia numerosa, magari proprio nella fattoria ai piedi delle cascate Vittoria a cui ha dedicato tanto amore.
Ian riesce a essere nello stesso tempo protettivo e amorevole ma anche dominante e prevaricatore. Dolce ma inflessibile. Ama sfidarla per il gusto dello scontro, perché adora quando diventa ostinata e finiscono per punzecchiarsi e fare scintille; d’altro canto la sua natura è quella di tenere tutto sotto controllo e prendere decisioni per la protezione, la cura e il benessere di lei senza dare spiegazioni.
Mi piace quando obbedisce, ma mi piace di più quando mi sfida. Mi piace lottare con lei, che sia con le parole o con i corpi, e mi piace soprattutto che non sembra più avere paura di me.
Se si trattasse di una ragazza normale, tutto questo sarebbe un atteggiamento logico e accettabile, ma Cas è una guerriera, essere sottomessa non è nella sua natura. Sa di aver poche chances, non le piace trovarsi sotto minaccia, né della polizia ma neanche dei compari di Ian, che non vedono l’ora di farla fuori.
Sentendosi minacciata e prigioniera, nonostante quello che Ian le fa provare, la mancanza di libertà si fa sempre più frustrante, e a nulla valgono le argomentazioni razionali sulle garanzie che lui le dà sulla sua sicurezza anche economica.
Mi guarda bevendosi la mia espressione, ma tiene d’occhio anche l’entrata e l’uscita della strada, assicurandosi che siamo soli. Al sicuro. Ha mantenuto il controllo permettendomi di perdere il mio. Non so se dovrei sentirmi euforica o delusa perché ha dimostrato di essere chi volevo che fosse.
In questo romanzo, insomma, Ian e Cas stanno prendendo le misure uno con l’altra: lui probabilmente non aveva ragionato su che cosa fare di lei una volta rapita; forse pensava di tenerla come un trofeo, un quadro di valore, chiusa in una stanza.
Cas, se in un primo momento vorrebbe fuggire, viene via via coinvolta dal fascino del luogo e della gente del posto, iniziando a trovarsi a suo agio e ad avere motivi per restare. Inizia anche a fidarsi di Ian e a prendere consapevolezza dei suoi sentimenti.
Come Nyaminyami ama la moglie, anch’io amerò Ian per sempre. Il mio cuore non mi darà un’altra occasione. Sarà anche l’organo più debole del mio corpo, ma ha sempre avuto la volontà più ferrea. È questo che fanno tanti anni di lotta. Rendono forti. Tremo per la consapevolezza quando arrivo nell’atrio. La sua improvvisa chiarezza mi fa rallentare. È una presa di coscienza speciale. Finalmente so chi sarà il mio unico amore. È un momento decisivo, prezioso. In circostanze normali avrei avuto le farfalle nello stomaco e la sensazione di vagare tra le nuvole, ma quella con Ian non è una storia d’amore normale. È più oscura. Abbiamo rubato tante delle ore che abbiamo condiviso. Eppure ho amato ogni minuto passato con lui, non importa quanto perverso o sbagliato fosse. L’ho saputo fin dall’inizio, l’ho saputo per tutto il tempo, e ora che mi trovo di fronte alla più grande verità della mia vita non c’è un principe azzurro a dirmi che andrà tutto bene. Mi restano solo le parole del cattivo, e non posso fare altro che pregare che lui sia buono quanto le sue parole.
Devono insomma fare i conti col fatto di accettare l’altro per quello che è, senza idealizzarlo e facendo spazio per lui/lei nella propria vita: Ian deve riconoscere che lei debba avere un po’ di libertà, trovare qualcosa da fare per dare un senso alla sua vita, insomma un ruolo diverso da quello di bambola; mentre Cas deve non solo accettare il fatto che lui sia un malvivente in fuga e probabilmente destinato a una vita breve, ma anche il fatto che stare insieme significhi essere in costante pericolo, e che quindi sia essenziale acconsentire a sottostare a delle regole.
“Cas, bambolina, non sono andato a letto con nessun’altra.” “Se metti le mani addosso a un’altra donna puoi tenerti lei. Io non sono il tuo giocattolo.” “Non ho guardato né toccato nessun’altra donna.” La sua espressione diventa incerta. “Come posso crederti?” È alticcia e ferita, ma non mi sfuggirà ancora a lungo. Le cingo la testa con una mano e intreccio ciocche setose dei suoi capelli nell’altra. “Perché mai dovrei farlo se tutto quello che voglio è proprio qui?” Un singhiozzo le muore in gola. Dice con un sussurro rauco: “Perché non ti ho detto che voglio l’esclusiva.” La attiro al petto. “Non c’è bisogno che tu lo dica. È così.” Si dibatte per allontanarmi. “Se è vero, perché volevi che te lo chiedessi?” “Volevo che ammettessi i tuoi desideri per accettarlo più in fretta.”
Il secondo volume di questa serie per me stupenda inizia gia con una buona dose di adrenalina, avevamo lasciato Cas intenta a scappare sia da Ian che dal detective Wolfe. Ian riesce a rintracciarla e dopo averla drogata la porta con sé in "Monzambico".
Il confronto tra i due, una volta arrivati nella tenuta dove si rifugia Ian per sfuggire da chi gli da la caccia da ben quindici anni, non promette nulla di buono.
Cas è sempre attratta da Ian, la chimica che si sprigiona ogni volte che sono vicini è innegabile ma la paura del futuro la rende nervosa e incerta.
Ian nel frattempo deve fare i conti con gli altri due componenti della banda, il fratello Leon e l'amico Ruben che lo accusano di aver mandato tutta la loro vita a p...... per una donna.
Ian non è pentito, dal primo momento in cui ha visto la sua bambolina bionda con gli occhi azzurri, ha capito che fosse stata creata apposta per lui e una volta ritornato a prenderla non l'avrebbe più lasciata andare.
C'era solo un problema, bisognava solo convincere Cas che scappare non era più un opzione, avrebbe fatto qualsiasi cosa per tenerla con sé al sicuro, anche sciogliere la banda e dargli tutto ciò che potesse renderla felice.
"Pensavo che sarei riuscito a lasciarla andare, ma quando mi sono ritrovato di fronte alla porta della stanza d’albergo in cui si nascondeva, ho fatto quello che il destino voleva. Ho rubato ancora, non solo altre poche ore del suo tempo, ma tutta la sua vita.
La porterò a casa con me."
Cas nel momento in cui l’agente Wolfe l'ha messa davanti a due scelte impossibili sapeva che non sarebbe più stata al sicuro, né a casa né con Ian, non poteva fare affidamento su di lui.
La loro attrazione sessuale poteva anche essere fuori dal comune, ma non era un suo alleato e lei solo un peso per lui.
Poteva contare solo su se stessa quindi doveva scoprire il più possibile su di loro è usarlo per salvarsi.
Ian cerca di essere sincero il più possibile con Cas è di condividere la sua vita cercando di conquistare il suo cuore perché è l'unica donna che vuole nella sua vita, e quando l'avrà ottenuto vorrà anche un pezzo della sua anima. Non sarà mai abbastanza. Non potrà mai averne abbastanza, ha tempo e pazienza e intende sfruttarlo tutto, anche se Cas non si lascia andare concedendogli solo il suo corpo e nulla di più.
"Ha messo sul tavolo le sue condizioni e ha lottato per ciò che si merita. Posso solo rispettarla di più. Avrà quello che desidera. Sarà la mia donna, e lo saprà tutto il mondo"
Cas metterà da parte l’orgoglio sperando di trovare la felicità con l’uomo che l'ha rapita?
Quanto sarà disposta a sacrificare per lussuria e desiderio?
Gli ultimi capitoli sono una scarica di adrenalina pura, se avessi problemi di cuore credo che avrei bisogno di un buon cardiologo.
Il finale è davvero inaspettato, imprevedibile e impensabile, non so cosa accadrà nel terzo volume ma, caspita non trovo nessuna via d'uscita, non c'è perdono, non ci può essere nessun lieto fine, sono veramente sconvolta.
È vero quando dicono che la rabbia acceca la mente, proprio come quella che ho provato io alla fine di questo secondo libro, sono rimasta così sconvolta che mi sono dovuta fermare un attimo prima di iniziare il terzo e ultimo libro e dar modo agli ultimi neuroni buoni che mi erano rimasti, di connettersi e poter elaborare cosa cavolo fosse successo.
I paesaggi descritti dall'autrice mi hanno completamente affascinata, anche gli animali che hanno fatto da cornice alla storia d'amore tra Cas e Ian insieme agli abitanti del villaggio mi hanno fatto sentire parte integrante della storia.
Ho percepito, i colori, gli odori e i sapori così come li ha descritti Cassandra, così come la leggenda legata al Dio "Nyaminyami" e sua moglie, che vivono nel fiume "Zambezi" separati dalla grande diga "Kariba" costruita dagli abitanti e maledetta dalla coppia di innamorati.
Come sempre le scene di hot sono da bollino rosso.
Ian è un uomo affascinante, passionale, dominante, dolce e premuroso tutti ingredienti che fanno incendiare i sensi a Cas e a me. 😁😁
"Assaporo ogni cosa, la bellezza della natura, il tramonto spettacolare, la pace e la tranquillità, il sapore amaro del drink, il cinguettio degli uccelli e la freschezza del crepuscolo. L’uomo accanto a me."
Confermo la mia dipendenza da Charmaine Pauls ancora devo iniziare il terzo libro e già penso ai prossimi che scriverà e non vedo l'ora di poterli leggere. Amo le protagoniste dei suoi libri sono forti, coraggiose, indipendenti e tutte hanno uno spirito ribelle, inoltre nei suoi libri trovi tutti gli ingredienti per tenere vivo l'interesse di chi legge fino alla fine, passione, amore, dolore, tradimento, delusione, aspettative, adrenalina e colpi di scena che lasciano il lettore completamente sopraffatto.
