This was weird. Really weird.
Ever since VK's ending (no spoiler for it, don't worry), I haven't been the biggest fan of this series.
It has flaws, but, I will admit, the series as a whole still entertains me. I'm tempted to give this 3 stars, but, honestly, I think 2 stars expresses my opinion better.

First things first, the writing was HORRENDOUS. Some of the sentences were so flat I wanted to peel my eyes out of my sockets from reading them. "He looked happy" is a legit sentence in here. Seriously? ANYTHING would be better than just saying someone looks happy or sad or angry. Fortunately, the likely scenario was that this may well have been a translation issue (which I sincerely hope), since the original is in Japanese. Even so, either the translator or the reader could have made the writing stronger throughout.

To put it bluntly, these stories were unnecessary. Absolutely NOTHING was added to enrich the overall story of VK. The only thing of note was a certain connection between Sara Shirabuki and another vampire, but even that felt contrived and unfounded in relation to the manga series. (I understand that Hino had originally wanted to put in this tidbit into the manga, but I'm honestly glad she didn't; I hated Sara's character.)

Rido's story was probably the most unnecessary of them all. A sheer twenty or so pages of annoying teenage bastard trapped in a hundreds of years old vampire body whining about how he can't commit incest with his drop-dead gorgeous sister. Gag me.

If that wasn't bad enough, the second story is even worse.

Zero's whole rendezvous with Kaito was interesting at first, but it never led to anything significant. Action for the sake of action. Crime intrigue for the sake of crime intrigue. None of it was explained.

White Lily's story was stupid as hell. I'm sorry, but who thought it would be a good idea to have a whiny horse complain for SIXTY PAGES about how badly she wants to get into a humans' pants? What the actual fuck!!! Are we promoting beastiality here??? At least do it in a sensible fashion, like Kore Yamazaki, the QUEEN of inter-species romances in my humble opinion. Imagine if poor Zero were to find out that his silent, reassuring animal friend actually just cares about him for those reasons. Imagine if that was your dog thinking what White Lily was thinking. Which actually could be possible, but, still, we don't need a reminder of what some of our furry friends may think of us; sometimes ignorance is bliss.

The final story was so stupid, irrelevant and boring. We get it: Kageyama has a perpetual huge crush on Ruka; Nadeshiko is apparently an important character that we all should get to know because side characters only mentioned once matter that much; and Kain gets to show off his muscles in a push-up contest—well, at least in the readers mind, because instead of getting a description of the character's emotions or response to the push-up contest (I can't believe what I am typing right now), we get a PARAGRAPH LONG explanation about how 'Everyone can do push-ups, but not everyone has the stamina. Only those with strong upper body strength can, so Kain is a very strong man.' I'm not even joking one bit. This is just insulting our intelligence.

1 star just for Hino's beautiful illustrations alone plus a gorgeous depiction of Zero's internal strife on the cover (aka, the best thing about VK). Another star for the masochistic entertainment I put myself through reading these ridiculous romps around Vampire World.

I don't usually review mangas, but I'm going to make an exception because (a) this book isn't a manga, it's a collections of sort stories based on a manga; and (b) I didn't like it. First of all, the stories had a flow and finesse similar to a college paper on a subject the writer doesn't care about. The flow of the story was stop and go with events being all over the place. I could tell that the writer wasn't used to writing in novel form and could imagine the story being better if it was formatted like a graphic novel. The writing gets better as the book progresses, but it still isn't good, or at least the level I'm used to. My second problem with this collection is that the scenes covered by the book are so trivial. I'm used to additional short stories provided extra detail or significance to the story, but these stories don't do that. The author simply takes creative liberty with the story and creates scenes that do nothing for the main series and leaves you questioning where these ideas came from. For example, one of the short stories is from the perspective of White Lily, a horse, and while it does explain why White Lily is so nice to Zero, the perspective is too strange. The author had the opportunity to write about anything and she did just that. Finally, the order of the short stories is from version parts of the series, but the last short story occurs either during or at the end of the last book. At the time of reading this collection, I hadn't read the last book yet so it kind of spoiled some of the book for me. It's not a very large spoiler, unless you're nowhere near the end of the series, but it was annoying nonetheless.

By far the better of the two Vampire Knight short story collections I have read (the other is Ice Blue Sin). Fleeting Dreams is engaging, tender and overall comes across as better written than Ice Blue Sin, although I don't know how much the varying translations matter in this regard (Ice Blue Sin is the Australian version, whereas Fleeting Dreams is the American version). I especially loved "Deranged Love" that provides a very nice insight into Rido's character (I just love the twisted ones). Overall, Fleeting Dreams feels much less AU and "fanfiction-y" than Ice Blue Sin and thus provides a better addition to the core story. Recommended to any fans of Vampire Knight.

Maybe a 2.5; not totally sure what to rate it.

I DNFed this during the "Queen of the Abyss" story. I also DNFed halfway through the "Gifts for Yuki" story.

This was bizarre. I'm not sure how much of it has to do with the fact that it's a translated book or the fact that it's a novelized manga in many ways. It reads like fan fiction for sure. Most of the story points make little sense other than to sound "edgy" or to reiterate something anyone who has read the series would already know. I've just finished my full series reread, and there were multiple scenes in Fleeting Dreams that were direct copies from the manga. There was no extra layer added to these, and the characters felt less like those established in the canon and more like underdeveloped copies.

I say none of this in a reflection on either authors' abilities, but more on the style of the story itself. It's random, more short stories to add random snippets to the world of Vampire Knight than to actually build on the characters and most certainly feels like fanfic.

Rating is three and a half stars. This compilation of short stories take place between vols. 11-19 and are written by a different author with Matsuri Hino's approval. They contain a little more backstories with the exception of "A Maiden's Melancholy", which deals with the wild mare in the Cross Academy stable, where Zero often naps. It is downright silly and doesn't deserve a place in this novel. There are a few illustrations included. Important note: this is NOT a manga. It's a novel.

Perhaps it’s because I’m no longer a teenager. Perhaps it’s because it takes a lot to grip me. Perhaps my expectations were too high. Perhaps it’s because I really enjoyed the manga so I expected the same caliber here. Aside from all that, the translation was just bland. “Wound up” was a prevalent phrase throughout to the point that I got a bit irked. None of the stories contributed to the overall main plot. Granted, these are indeed bonus stories but I didn’t even find them to be all that interesting. The horse having human romantic feelings toward Zero was just WEIRD. Totally threw me and I did not go for that at all. It was a jumble of “weird,” “wrong,” “ridiculous,” and “melodramatic.” A horse considering herself to be a maiden in love? Come on now. The Queen of the Abyss had a literal blood bath moment, but that wasn’t exactly enthralling. Oh well. This was a quick read and helped me catch up on this year’s reading goal. All in all though, a disappointment.

You should only read this light novel if you have read the complete manga!! Watching the anime is not enough since the anime stops halfway the manga.

I love the vampire knight universe and this novel was a good addition to the already existing storyline. I did not only revolve around the main characters but also around the characters we not close to. Some stories are more interesting than others so I skipped one or two when I read the novel for the first time. I completed the whole novel once I read the first volume of Vampire Knight Memories. The release of this story helped me to find my love for the serie again.

Another nice addition to this novel are the pictures. The pictures are sketches of a certain moment in the stories.

This short story collection was amusing enough to read, though sometimes did feel a little bit like fanfiction. Which isn’t bad, but just wasn’t what I expected (and strangely at the same time was). There was one short story I particularly liked, and one that complimented it nicely. Nevertheless, if you’re a fan of Vampire Knight I think you might definitely like this book as it’s nice to return to world after finishing the manga (the book is a definite big source of spoilers so don’t read it prior to starting the mange/anime!)

As light novels go, this is one of the best. There was only one story I didn't like and that was just a matter of taste, I think. All in all, each one is a really great little story that I thoroughly enjoyed. If you're a fan of "Vampire Knight", this is a definite must-read. You won't be disappointed.

This book was okay, to me. I liked the stories featuring Kaname, Zero and Yuki. I really don't remember much of the secondary characters. But then I read the graphic novels a few years ago.
Can't wait to read Vampire Knight: Memories.

~4/5

I am a fan of Vampire Knight, and definitely one of Matsuri Hino (I love her art), but I’m also happy that VIZ is taking a chance with special releases and seeing how they do. And I’m glad at least some of them are doing well. I hope this does, too.

First of all, I have to say that the artwork in this book is reason enough to pick this up. I didn’t know there would be art aside from the cover and one color page, but there are sketches throughout the book. And they are gorgeous. They go with the stories, and they are just so pretty. I was pleasantly surprised by that.

Second, there are six stories in this book. Some of them were a little hazy in reference to the manga for me, especially the one about White Lily. The one about Rido and the one starring White Lily were a little odd to me, particularly in their obsessions. The one about Yuki and Kaname was very cute, if a little too long. And I liked seeing Aido--I'm a surprisingly big fan of his.

The last story, about the set of characters after the end of the manga, was very nice. It was cute at times, as well as a nice conclusion for the rest of the characters. The hidden gem of the book, though, was Sara’s story. It gave a new depth to her, and gave reason for her inclination for Ichijo, as well as just being a sweet story. Surprisingly, Zero’s story was not as exciting for me—it was an interesting storyline, a hidden piece of the manga, but not outstanding to me.

While I did enjoy most of the book, I will say that the writing was not amazing. It was a little plain, and at times read with the exaggeration of a manga, which I don’t think it needed.

Overall, though, it was a good collection of stories, and very worth picking up.

There was also mention of other Vampire Knight novels, and now I'm curious about if those will be released.

A review copy was provided by the publisher, VIZ Media, and Erik Jansen from MediaLab PR. Thank you so, so much!

A Review To: Gifts For Yuki

Kaname is the lord of the Kuran household. Along with Yuki, his beloved sister who is terrible at almost every school subject there is. That's where Aido comes in and becomes her tutor. Kaname of course was happy for her of getting a perfect score and promised her that he would bring her gifts as his congratulation. Although, she didn't expect him to continue bringing her gifts every morning.
In my opinion, the story was nice. It had a sweet touch to it with all the jealousy and care. But there were some parts that did confused me a bit. The tone of voice seem to fit nicely in with the character so that was done well. It was cute enough to like. A lesson it might of taught was about presents. Like when Yuki wanted to thank Aido for his time of teaching, she wasted sleep to finish the gift and it hurt Kaname to find out that she was using her health to make it for someone else. Until he then knew that Yuki was also making one for him. So, I guess the lesson is to always have extra for those you care.
For this story, I would rate it as 4 out of 5 being good. I didn't give it a total five because I didn't exactly fall in love with it, but I did like it. It was a really cute story between the three of them. The stories are fun and interesting.

I was alway interested in Takuma - Sara relationship and hoped them to end up together. They both possess pleasing beauty with blue/forest green eye and blonde hair and soft-spoken manner. Their character seem to be opposite: Takuma appears very un-vampire like with his cheerful, enthusiastic, and caring demeanor whether it be towards humans or vampires while Sara is a duplicitous and manipulative princess. However, they crave for love deep down. Sara doesn't reveal her true colors to others except Takuma and Kaname - who can see through her. I was so sad when Sara gave Takuma a kiss before shattering into a million shards of glass. I was happy that there is a filler for Sara so that I can have a deeper understanding about her.

Takuma resembles her first love: Asato Ichijo (WTF??? Takuma's grandfather?? What a surprise). Maybe that's why she shows interest in him? Luckily, although Takuma usually possesses a carefree attitude, he understands complicated scenarios with an air of maturity (he is my all-time favourite in VK) and he's her perfect companion. If Sara didn't die, maybe they would develop their relationship. (Do you think they are a perfect match? They also have feelings for each other<3)

This book should be read AFTER the entire manga.
This book despite being 268 pages long is actually a fast read because...
It's double spaced.
I shit you not. And ViZ wanted $15 for this originally.

I will admit I'm only familiar with the anime, however even so I was able to follow along with the story. Which means the main story is that banal that everything makes sense without 90% of it, or that you really don't need these stories for anything.

The stories themselves are varied. One thing you get a note of is that there is a LOT of incest going on in the manga. Literal bother and sister pairings.

That being said, White Lily's story was probably the second worst as the whole beginning is making a joke of her feelings. I know it's a horse, but that attitude translates to real women in real life too.

The worst was Shien's story where she is constantly called poison just because she likes sex and men. She's also shamed for having a 'boy' harem because women should NEVER call men boys even though it seems the reverse is never true.

This is a very light read but a decent companion piece to the manga series "Vampire Knight." "Fleeting Dreams" is a series of short stories with some artwork by "Vampire Knight" creator (manga-ka) Matsuri Hino sprinkled throughout. There's no great revelations in this book, but there is a story written from the POV of the horse, White Lily. Yes, you read that right, the horse got her own story. Ah, the very stuff that fluff writing is made from. I found myself looking forward to the art pieces more than the stories (Matsuri Hino creates beautiful characters), but you may enjoy the stories as well. This should not be read unless you've read "Vampire Knight." This should perhaps not be read unless you really enjoyed "Vampire Knight."

One of my fav mangas, one of my fav characters. I always love to read side-stories of my beloved series, especially if they allow me to peek into the beloved characters everyday life. Reading this took me back to a happy time of my life. Nostalgic mood hit me like I was reading about my own past, not the one of Kiryu Zero and the Kurans. I love the manga, I love the anime... Why only *** then? Because it could have been much better in the hands of a more talented author. Nevertheless it was a great reading experience.
