Very impressed with this volume. Resident Evil Manga dealing with a biohazard outbreak at a prestigious private school in Singapore. The school is in the jungle and cut off from the outside world. A professor specializing in biology used to date the headmistress and is sent in to investigate the problem. We see some new twists to the Resident Evil mythos: the zombies are faster, smarter, and the infection doesn't seem to be spread by biting. The headmistress is covering something up, but what? Thankfully Chris Redfield and his team of elite commandos will soon be on the case.

Most manga I read always seems to lose me at least some of the time, but this time I knew what was going on the entire volume. (Go, me!) Also, while the art can be confusing at times, most of the time its very appealing. The women are especially sexy (even the nun headmistress.)

Overall a really good, creepy volume that exceeded my expectations.

This was an engrossing introduction zombie story. Violent and shocking with quite a few twists that leave the reader with an unknown outcome. For horror, I love the unknown aspects. Keep me in suspense to the end. So far, this story has taken the first steps in that direction.

A Professor Wright has been requested to come to Marhawa. A private academy in the middle of nowhere. Miles form civilization, no phone lines or other means of communication with the outside would. It is run by an ex-girlfriend who is now a nun and headmistress of the school. So he brings his nephew along for the trip as a life experience. Well, it will be an experience all right. IF they can survive.

A small zombie outbreak has begun at the academy. The headmistress is keeping it under-wraps so the students are unaware of the problem for the time being. When Wright suggests contacting the BSAA, she refuses. But without leads on how it started, this school could be in for a lot of trouble!

This is just the first volume of a short graphic novel series. So far I really like the characters. I also love the mystery that shrouds the school, the outbreak and what secrets the headmistress has.

While we do get get Chris Redfield and team in this volume, it is a very brief and distant involvement. This volume left me eager to continue. To learn what is going on and see how bad things will get. Because this is just the beginning...

A fairly light read being about zombies but it is still plenty violent and the teen behavior of much of the characters (being this is a high school) adds a mix of both unpredictability from some and cliche reactions from others. So it is well blended.

*I received a digital copy of this book in exchange for a fair/honest review. All thoughts and opinions expressed are strictly my own.*

Excellent setup for a rip-roaring zombie story. Points off only for having little character introduction before throwing them into the ring.

Edited: Should probably mention that I do not play/watch/follow the Resident Evil world, so I have no preconceived notions about these characters or how they fit into the rest of the universe.

Vol 1-5

Tapi begitu memasuki akhir vol.2 hingga tamat, pertarungan, serta rahasia-rahasia yg terkuak satu demi satu, saya jamin bakal menawan perhatian anda. Value ceritanya mengenai hubungan antar manusia pun bagus.

Zombienya? Keren. BSAAnya? Cakep. Saya? Ngiler ˊ▽ˋ) #mabok

Pengin kasih perfect 5 stars.

I will also do a video review here at my channel: http://www.youtube.com/magicofbooks

"The Marhawa Desire" is volume 1 in this manga series set in the world of the "Resident Evil" video game series. Professor Doug Wright and his nephew Ricky travel to the prestigious Marhawa Academy to investigate a series of student deaths. But the students aren't staying dead: they are coming back to life! Professor Wright realizes he's going to need more help before things get out of hand and asks for the help of Chris Redfield who's had his fair share of encounters with the undead.

Well this was fun. I wasn't sure what to expect. I'm a huge fan of the "Resident Evil" video game series so I was curious to see what these manga books would be like. I was hesitant at first because the series only features one character from the games (Chris Redfield), and the rest are made up for the manga. Weirdly enough, Chris only has a few pages of screentime in this book, which actually didn't bother me because I found myself really liking the characters of Professor Wright and his nephew Ricky as they investigate some strange deaths at this elite boarding school. I suspect Chris Redfield will have a bigger role to play in the next books, but it didn't bother me his lack of pagetime. Professor Wright and Ricky were fun new additions to this world. I liked their relationship with one another and banter. They work well as a team. The character of Mother Gracia (the woman who runs this school) is an interesting one as well. I can't make up my mind just yet if she's a hero or villain. She also has an interesting past with Professor Wright as is willing to do just about anything to protect the reputation of her school. There's also a handful of students that make up the rest of the cast. Unfortunately, I think there's some rather problematic moments involving the young female students. They are dressed like stereotypical school girls with way too short skirts and huge...uh...bosoms. And there's convenient moments were you get shots of their butts. I'm not going to make a big deal out of it quite honestly. It's manga. It's target demographic is teen boys. So I'm not going to gripe about it. If anything I was amused because it was so obvious.

At the end of the day, this is based in the world of "Resident Evil." There's bound to be some predictable elements that occur later in the series. I've played every game. I think I know where everything is going. But I'm still enjoying seeing the series in the format of a manga and I'm intrigued by the story. And I don't think you have to be a fan of the video games to like this. If you like manga or zombies but have never played the games, I think that's okay. There's nothing that is confusing to non players or an overabundance of backstory. It's simply just entertaining and nothing more than that.

Its okay. I feel like Resident Evil Storys these days have a weird way of trying to put characters together. They could have gone with the new set of characters and kept the OG ones out. But we‘ll see where it goes.

If you find yourself wanting more story out of resident evil, this is a pretty good little side trip down zombie lane. It's nice to note that Piers Nivans and Chris Redfield appear in this book, but they're neither the main characters, nor seen very often in it. We see more of them in later volumes.

Originally reviewed at www.swordsandspectres.wordpress.com

I’ll start off by saying that I have only seen a couple of the movies and have never bothered with the videogames. That being said, I do love a bit of zombie fun. So, when my friend said ‘I’ve got the first four volumes of these Resident Evil graphic novels, do you want them for free?’ I leapt at the chance (gotta love those minimalists, giving things away they don’t want). Seeing as how I have never picked the games up or fussed over the films, the fact that this was a prequel to Resident Evil 6 was totally unimportant to me.

The artwork on the cover drew me in straight away. It just looks fantastic and, pretty much, encapsulates the Resident Evil vibe that one comes to expect. Upon opening the first few pages, you are greeted by some seriously awesome, seriously dark and gory art. All in full colour to really get that blood and gore goodness leaping off the page. As you turn more pages, you are still hit with good quality artwork but you fast realise that the full colour was just to whet your appetite and lure you in. The art, from here on out, is all in black and white. Not that that in any way takes any of the potency from the artwork away. It only serves to give it a grittier feel when the teeth come out and the blood starts to flow.

The story revolves around a zombie outbreak at a prestigious school called the Marhawa High School. The head mistress calls in Professor Doug White (rather than you know, someone who would be able to contain this properly and see that nothing untoward comes of it … but reputations need to be maintained!) in the hopes of keeping the problem under wraps and the reputation of the school as high and mighty as it always has been. Doug, and his nephew/assistant, Ricky, quickly get swept up into a fast-moving story of love, lust and zombie (with some intriguing backstory thrown in to keep things interesting on all possible fronts).

What this graphic novel does well is flesh out pretty much all of the characters or, in the absence of said fleshing, make you at least care about the more minor ones that pop up as larger parts of the tale. None of them feel like fodder or background characters. It also, in true Japanese style, is filled to bursting with school girls wearing skimpy skirts and displaying humongous amounts of cleavage. And flawless good looks, obviously.

I am looking forward to getting through my reading pile so I can get stuck into the next volume, especially with how the first one ended; leaving the reader high on mystery and intrigue. It really makes you want to keep plowing on throughout the volumes.

Qué no me gustó:

Ok, yeah I can get into this.

Set firmly before Resident Evil 6 but after at least Claire's story in Resident Evil Revelations 2, this licensed manga brings all the gore, character relationship drama, and action of the Resident Evil series to manga.

Seriously, the first opening color pages have one student biting and ripping apart another, painting the walls with blood, and definitely set the tone movinf forward.

At the Marhawa Academy, kids never leave the walls. Raised there since elementrary, the Academy is all the kids know and they are faithful to their leader Mother Gracia. When one of her students bites and infects another, Gracia invites Professor Wright and his nephew Ricky to find the source. She wants to avoid a Biohazard incident and calling in the BSAA, but when Chris Redfield, Piers, and Merah cannot reach Prof. Wright by phone they begin to look for him anyway.

First volume ends with Gracia attempting to cover up the incidents, while Prof. Wright and Ricky prepare to investigate the underground tunnels below the school with two guards.

●Resident Evil The Marhawa Desire Vol 1 by Naoki Serizawa●

I'm so glad I finally got my hands on a copy of this manga style book, considering it's hard to find in English I'm so glad the wait was worth it!

It's set before the event of Resident Evil 6, and I was happy to see some familiar faces as well as some new characters. The story hooked me from the start, it definitely had the eerie RE vibes down to a T (maybe even down to a T-Virus? Okay, I'll take my leave now). I liked the setting of Marhawa school and the secrecy of the outbreak, it was a good introduction to the story whilst still giving us action, gore and some drama too.

The art itself was really cool, though cheesy at times, it still portrayed the scenes well. I enjoyed the references to the other games/ stories in the franchise, such as Raccoon City with Leon and Claire. It's overall a cool read, I'm invested in the story but doubt I'll be able to find copies of the other volumes at a reasonable price, but if I could then I'd definitely continue this series!

5/5 🌟

I picked up the full series, all five volumes second hand last year for 100 dollars.

This is a book that I remember skimming when it first came out. I have totally forgotten that I had actually bought the first volume and I do not remember finishing it back then.

I enjoy the art, it does remind me of Battle Royale, the action are well paced but they tend to rely on jump scares. The setting is something that I enjoy a lot. In zombie movies and stories we usually do not follow both teenagers and adults. The environments is rendered gorgeously although the characters are still pretty flat as of vol 1.

I will continue the series and look out for manga of the sort.

This was amazing!

Loved the art more than i thought i would. I've mostly read One Piece, Dragon Ball and Junji Ito manga, so this was a new style for me!

The story was great, and can't wait to get the rest of the series! Does look like the second volume is insanely priced in comparrison to the rest of the volumes??

Heres hoping i can find it at a fair price!

A must read if you enjoy the Biohazzard/Resident Evil Games/Movies!!

This was great! A proper Resident Evil manga style horror graphic novel. The story has a few cheesy bits, but I have no problem with that, and the rest is good and Resi enough for me. This is a prequel to Resi 6, which I’ve not played yet so that works for me. The artwork is spot on, for both a horror graphic novel and a Resident Evil graphic novel. It’s good and gory, but also the characters play out like Resi characters too. Looking forward to the rest of these if I can get my hands on them!

I quite enjoyed this. I've never liked the 'Resident Evil' movies and I'm only familiar enough with the games to recognize names. It has its cheesy moments and I didn't care for the main character much, but this was a good introduction to a new chapter in the 'Biohazard' universe.

As Resi fan (both movies and video games) i was pleasantly pleased with this manga. Perfect amount of gore, mystery, and of course ZOMBIES. Wish there was a bit more Chris Redfield though 😍. Grabbing Vol 2 from my local library ASAP!
