In this final volume of Phantom Thief Jeanne, protagonists and antagonists in the "war" for holy power (more a series one-on-one battles, if anything) are all but indistinguishable from each other. In some cases, they . This theme could have had some potency if it weren't riding in such a wobbly, erratic vehicle. I'm not disappointed that the "Phantom Thief" aspect was abandoned halfway through, but what replaced it was all so over the place that this is hard to recommend... art aside, as mentioned in previous reviews.

I doubt that any of Tanemura's series are any better than this--Full Moon was my first of hers, and I have good memories of it, but that was quite a while ago. Other than that, both Gentlemen's Alliance and Sakura Hime have the same underlying problems: haphazard storytelling and melodrama. Without the former, the latter might be tolerable; as is, it feels like the author is yanking the reader's chain for lack of something else to do.

I enjoyed the very last bonus story in this volume, not for its content so much as to see the characters from "Jeanne" in Tanemura's later style.

3.5 stars, mostly because I liked how things wrapped up (neat as a bow as it was, which isn’t my fave). Consistent with the rest of the series in lacking development because of the small page count, but still being entertaining.

A convoluted and happy ending for all. Beautiful art and acrobatic storytelling ends this series on a positive, if trite note. I completely understand why the anime appealed to me when younger and appreciate the manga, but it will not break into any personal best lists. A nostalgic revisit.

"I've finally found the courage. I have the words you've waited to hear. 'It's okay to show your tears. You can cry. Because I'm not alone anymore.'"

Okay, outside of the really weird stuff with God, Adam, and Eve and how it related to Maron, I LOVED this volume!

With how upset I was about Noin in the previous volume, I was very worried I would not like this volume at all (and I refused to read the bonus story about him because nothing that man does or what anyone says can redeem him in my eyes), but it was the total opposite!

The first half was so powerful and I loved the redemption story that unfolded! I was so deeply touched and found myself crying once again when reading this story! Not only that, but the deep friendship between Maron and Miyako is such a shining point that I cried there too! I love them both and so glad they were open with one another and how their friendship only grew deeper. <3

The big battle however was my favorite part! I know some other reviewers said they felt it was anti-climatic, but as someone who has struggled to love ALL of herself, I thought it so powerful how Maron responded and won that battle. It made me wish I had read this series a long time ago and could see the way Maron shared love, had courage, and fought with hope. Maron has always been incredibly strong and I think that battle shows how much she is.

Overall, I'm so glad I read this series! Maron's journey impacted me in a way I was unprepared for and feel this was such a strong ending to her story. I don't know if I'll buy personal copies for myself (thank you library for having this series!), but Maron encouraged me so much when reading. I look forward to coming back to this series again one day!

The last book in this series, and boy am I disappointed. Seriously, this is how it ends? Not with a bang but with just a little fight and then done within seconds? Urgh, I truly hate it when series build up so much drama and so much stuff and then end it like it all doesn't matter.

Also the later parts (yes, we get some future stuff) are a bit of a disappointment. Mostly because it is all confusing. At one point it is years ago, the next story is from much more recent times, and the next is just after the battle and all that. I wish they would have just put them in chronological order instead of random like this.

Continuing on the whole it is the last book in the series? Well I loved some parts of it, I was expecting some dramatic last part, especially after everything that happens in this one. Revelations are said, romance is done, and we possibly had a moment of sex between two characters (which isn't shown, but very much hinted to).
There is a whole lot of build-up in this book alone, and like I said earlier, that is all for nought since the ending is just poof over.

I will miss our main characters, especially Maron. She can finally be happy now that everything is over and she can be with the guy she loves so much. She was a wonderful character, strong, resilient and one very kick-ass character. I loved how she was honest, loved people with all her heart and tried to love even her enemies (which is a hard thing to do).

I will also miss the various other characters. Characters I didn't always like from the first page, but who grew on me as the volumes went by. Some turned out to be good guys, some turned out to be bad guys, but I really liked them all in the end.

The art, well as was expected, is top-notch. Though I would like to say this: It isn't only CLAMP who makes stick/noodle people. Dear Lord, some pictures in this series had just impossible body proportions. For instance a few characters would have like 80% legs, then a small body and then a head.

The story, as you could see in my previous reviews had up and downs. There were mentions of rape, parts that were practically about rape and more. Not always a comfortable thing and also not something I want to see in a manga.

All in all I would really recommend this series. I really enjoyed it, and I am sad the ride is over. Luckily I got various new manga series coming out that I want to read.

I guess I should have saved that theology warning for this volume. Phantom Thief Jeanne comes to a close, but not before it can make some of the weirdest takes on Christianity this side of Evangelion.

This book leads off with my other least favourite story in this series, where Chiaki has suddenly decided to give up on Maron and get together with her best friend in the most public ways possible.

Naturally Maron just accepts this because she is now a strong, confident character. Except it just makes her look like a dope because people have been getting possessed left, right, and centre and until it is pointed out that maybe her friends looking so evil might be a bug, not a feature, she never even considers that a demon might be behind it.

Then we get extended stuff between Finn and Access, probably the nicest parts of this ending, and the most insane take on the Garden of Eden story. Plus god justifies chauvinism!? Thanks a bunch god.

Maron faces down the demon lord, the same strategy is used in both fights in this book and works both times. Heroic sacrifice, everything gets cleaned up so tidily you could eat off it, here’s some bonus manga of everybody being happy. Seriously, the forests of Vermont have less sap than the conclusion of this series.

Sigh. This series was like the San Andreas fault. Shaky at the best of times, but when it really acted up it went to some crazy extremes. Maron and Access made this series better and I enjoyed most of my time with them.

That said, Chiaki did not and I think your enjoyment of the series will largely hinge on how you view him. For me, even recognizing that this series is over twenty years old, the gender politics are atrocious.

The end thesis here is basically put as ‘woman is awesome, but when she inevitably falls it is the job of a man to pick her up again’. I think I died a little inside reading that. Even though Maron makes her own choices, most of the time it’s framed around her relationship and I genuinely believe she is better than that.

2.5 stars, rounded down because this thing really went up its own butt at the end. I would say 3 stars to the series as a whole, with variance based on how well you can handle the gender stuff.

In this chapter, we find out Serena is Sailor Moon! But Darien has been brainwashed by Queen Beryl, the final chess piece! The dark one appears to be God's incel son, bitter over being abandoned. But in the end we find that love and peace conquers all!

Heavy backstory drop here, and heavy future (post-main story) drop.

As someone who grew up on Cardcaptor Sakura, Sailor Moon, Tokyo Mew Mew and Magic Knight Rayearth 90s magical girl series speak to me on a whole other level. I wouldn't for a second say that Phantom Thief Jeanne holds up to those bastions of maho shojo culture but it hits all the sweet spots for me as well as managing to be subversive in a few other aspects.

I do have to start off with a disclaimer however that this has some pretty heavy religious tones, absolutely not true to source and gets pretty buckwild, so I think this has the effect of probably putting off people that aren't religious and aren't interested in angels and fighting for God. But also turning away people that are as the religious themes are...pretty wild. I think that not being reglious myself did help me to enjoy it a little more to be honest.

The other disclaimer is that this is absolutely a product of its time and so has messy ideas about women and is pretty sexist in some areas. The main character is strong and tough and doesn't need anyone until she starts to struggle and then can't do anything without the male lead who is constantly rescuing her. This isn't particularly uncommon in shojo manga but the extent to which it is portrayed in this series gets pretty tiring.

That said, the art style is gorgeous. All the hallmarks of 90s shojo with adorable clothes, flowing hair and giant eyes. The idea of angels and reincarnation is an interesting slant for a magical girl series and, while as I mentioned it gets pretty wild, has its moments. This is definitely more pushed towards romance than anything else, while romance is often a big trope in magical girl series, it seems to be the predominant focus of Jeanne, even pushing aside Maron (the lead characters) job as phantom thief, I found that grating at times.

I think over all this is great for a nostalgia trip but alot of tropes are out dated, and in some places outright damaging (there's an absolutely wild idea behind using gods power and its ties to your virginity which...yeah.) but if you're able to overlook these things and suspend your disbelief for what is a pretty short series you might find enough in it to enjoy. I can absolutely see alot of people being turned off by this series though.

I really enjoyed myself while reading this series, and I'm happy I've read it. It holds a special place in my heart because it was the first series from Arina Tanemura that I've actually experienced since watching and then rewatching Full Moon a couple of times. Insane how that anime is one of my favorite things in the world and I had never checked out anything else by the author. Most of all, though, I'm very grateful because this series was gifted to me in its entirety.

That said, it did go downhill a bit, for me. I loved the first three volumes. Then we introduce a bunch of lore regarding Jeanne D'Arc and the angels, but by that point the story had been so far removed from any of that type of stuff that it was too late to get me interested in it. I wanna see the relationships between the characters being properly developed and resolved, I genuinely didn't care about the workings of the angels. It might just be a me thing, but the last little arc of this story revolves too much around Finn (and, to an extent, Access) and I simply do not care. She did nothing of relevance until the last volume before this one, so I'm not invested in what happens to her. A flashback that stops the action and gives me her backstory isn't going to change that. Flashbacks are fine, as long as they serve a purpose to the story and give us information on characters we care about. It wasn't the case.
I also found myself being less and less invested in the main romance. There's two reasons for that: One, I much prefer following the build up of the romances. Two, everyone in this story was completely developed by the time this volume starts. There was nothing more to see, I just wanted to get to the ending.

That said, I had a great time, so there's plenty of good, too: the artstyle is amazing throughout the series, as you would expect from Arina Tanemura; this is super fastpaced and easy to read; and all the relationships were properly developed and given a satisfying ending (which was the only thing I really wanted, here. I especially like Maron and Miyako's friendship. Friendships are my thing).

Definitely not as great as Full Moon, but what is? This was a ton of fun!

The ended was as expected… Everyone got their happy ending in some way or another.

Now, my overall thoughts on this series….

It wasn’t for me. It was too melodramatic and I felt so much cringe. I didn’t take Jeanne (or Sinbad) seriously. I felt like they were kids (obviously) dressing up to shout cool catchphrases while throwing chess pieces (never got why??) at paintings. Just CRINGE. I absolutely love Sailor Moon (one of my top series) so I’m not new to magical girls. I just think this series was trying too hard. It was too over the top.
The last thing, I didn’t like was the religious aspects of the story. I should’ve looked into this series before reading it. Otherwise, I would’ve avoided it. In my opinion, religion and Magical girl power just doesn’t mix??? I do, however, commend the mangaka for putting the message out there, that girls don’t have to be a virgin to be “pure”. I really loved that.

So in the end, I have found another Tanemura series that just didn’t hit right for me. Her art is gorgeous though! I’ll go look at her art books instead.

“Always earnest and strong! … Here I come!”

A mostly good mixed bag, Maron is a classically lovable magical girl lead!!

There’s a lot of dated concepts: the strong girl can feel vulnerable and protected by her love interest; casually brushed off sexual assault; older men with much younger women … all of which are off putting .. some elements are called back and used a teachable moment .. but not all of them

Aside from all that .. I greatly appreciated the surprisingly dark lore, I also liked the visual gags and bestie miyako

I love a lot of the art, the girls and their fashion however almost all the guys look the same, I had to do many a double take to figure out who was actually in scene

If you already love shoujo, historical flaws and all, you’ll undoubtably love this but outside of that and through a modern lens .. perhaps a pass

I wanted to like this so much more than I did. Some specific moments hit hard and are done well but almost everything is undercut by some garbage gender stuff. Maron is either useless, or having some big breakthrough about herself- immediately followed by her falling into Chiaki's arms and crying about how much she needs him. She's the protagonist who grows the most and is the big hope of the world who inspires others but also mostly only succeeds because she's supposed to. So many 'betrayals' and twists and nonsense wrapping around itself in convoluted ways.

I wish I liked this series more. The art was cute. The gags were great. The bizarre premise had some fun ideas in it. Too bad it fell short almost every time.

Oh and I never went to Church but I'm pretty sure the Christianity in this is even weirder than actual Christianity, which is bizarre.

I really enjoyed this conclusion!

I read it for a few readathons. They were:

Cardcaptor-a-thon - The Fly - Read a book that features a flying creature - Finn and Access are both angels so they have wings.

Reading Rivalry - A book with good vs evil - this volume definitely has this!

Fiction Feud Society - The main character goes through a metamorphosis. Jeanne finally discovers who she’s meant to be in this volume.

RWMBingo2019 - takes place in a magical realm - a little bit of this volume takes place in heaven so I think that counts.

I am such a sucker for “10 years later” endings 😭 The final fight wasn’t great, it just kind of happened. It could have been way more dramatic. I thought the series started off strong, but then petered off a bit in the last three volumes. I didn’t like it as much as Tanemura’s other series, Idol Dreams.

This final volume of the series revealed it's version of the Genesis Adam and Eve story that was designed to make the Phantom Thief Jeanne story make sense. Oh well, they tried.

And, imagine my delight when I am treated to not one, not two, not three, but FOUR bonus stories!

The final battle in heaven was extremely cool and wrapped up very nicely; I especially enjoyed the thoughts on purity presented here. But the rest of the volume... Hate to see a struggling series get knocked down with a terrible epilogue like this.

~4.5/5

The ending of this series was just as good as I remember it. Maybe even better, actually, since I’m older now and can enjoy parts of the story now with better understanding.

The Adam and Eve/Jeanne d’Arc storyline ends very sweetly. The final battle is brilliant, especially the way it shows how much Maron has grown. I could fangirl over Maron and Chiaki for a while, because they are one of my favorite Tanemura couples and they are so very cute, but I also want to mention Maron and Miyako. Their friendship is strong and a very important bond to Maron; it’s about as important to her as her and Chiaki’s. I love that the friendship is given as much importance as the romance. Her relationship with her parents, as well, is sometimes pushed to the side because of their absence, but it comes full force here as well.

The side romances are just as powerful, too. Miyako and Minazuke are super cute, and Access and Finn I love as much as Maron and Chiaki, if not even more. Access and Finn are tragic, and their ending makes me extremely happy.

I’ve always loved Tanemura’s artwork, and I think it has gotten more smooth in her newer series, but it’s just as beautiful here. I had to mention that one more time here, because I love her art so much, and I caught myself admiring it a few times while reading.

Her storytelling is just as good, and it’s nice that all of the characters are rounded and given their own stories, including minor characters.

There are a handful of extra stories at the end, including three new ones not in the previous licensing. And I will say that those stories are worth buying this beautiful book alone. If you love the characters, especially Access and Finn, then you need to read those stories. They are worth it, and such a nice added conclusion.

I don’t think I can recommend this series highly enough. It’s beautiful, engaging, with the best ending for everyone. I love it so very much.

This was an okay ending to this series. I'm surprised it didn't really have the usual Tanemura "OMG this cannot end happily.... but just kidding it can" sort of ending. You just always knew it'd end happily.

Tanemura-san's take on God was interesting. The "final battle" was pretty anti climactic. The ending was pretty gushy.

All in all, this series wasn't too bad. It bothered me a lot in the beginning because of the Sailor Moon-ness of it, but I eventually got over it and enjoyed the series. It was an interesting concept with some fun characters. I enjoyed it.

I liked the ending volume of this series a lot more than what led up to it because it decided to go full-on crazy. Time travel, weird thousand year love triangles, and literally meeting God and Satan. Oh, and giving birth to your best friend's reincarnation? Yeah, what?
