A Larger World with Grander Adventure—And More Heart!
In DARK RECKONING, Rick Duffy takes us back to the land of Eloria, where most people can use magic through the use of sigils. Par and Enio may have saved the world, but that doesn’t mean they’ve gotten a hero’s reward. In fact, these two boys are scrounging in the shadows of the country’s opulent capital, Argent, and living in fear lest the law discovers their identity.
Soon they realize that their work is only half-done, and it may be entirely undone if a new dark player in the power game manages to enter the world from the Purple Hells. Par and Enio take up the challenge, and with the help of old friends and new, they once again face seemingly impossible odds to take on the forces of evil.
As the world expands around Par and Enio, we learn about more different types of magic, which is engaging. The cast of DARK RECKONING is much larger and more varied than the first novel, and the interactions are more complicated. As with the first novel, there are richly imagined scenes that you can easily see in your mind’s eye.
Par and Enio’s relationship was the engine that powered THE SIGIL MASTERS, and that engine is hard at work, here, too, but as with the rest of the story, it’s bigger than it was before. As Par and Enio are growing up, their relationship is changing, and as their capacity for caring increases, it comes along with more complicated emotions of jealousy, grief, and disappointment. As with any close friends, Par and Enio develop long-standing grudges, and these threaten their personal bond. Duffy really makes you feel that it’s not just the world that’s at stake, there is a close and powerful friendship at jeopardy here.
If you enjoyed THE SIGIL MASTERS, you will find even more to love in DARK RECKONING.
