The Majesty of God's Law
This book is a study of the history and development of the only system of law which was revealed by God, himself. That is why it is called, "God's law."
The Psalmist described the supreme excellence of God's law when he said:
"The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the ear: the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes." (Psalms 19:7-8)
The entire code of God's law is carefully enunciated in five chapters of this book. Under this judicial system there are only about a hundred statutes required to govern a community, a state, a nation or the world if these guidelines are in the hands of wise and virtuous judges.
In order to make this system work, the people must be taught the law and then they must enter into a solemn covenant to honor and sustain its precepts.
When Moses gave this law to the ancient Israelites he said it could make them the most peaceful, prosperous and powerful people in the world. However it was revealed to Moses that the people of that age would violate its precepts. He then learned that it would not be until the latter days that this law would be lived the way it was originally designed.
The American Founding Fathers picked up on that promise because it appeared to them that it would be in this choice land where this great promise would one day be fulfilled.
Nevertheless, they recognized that the Constitution was the indispensable foundation for such an inspired system of prosperity, justice and peace. When they saw the Constitution would gradually unravel, they knew that this charter of liberty would have to be restored to all its pristine power by some future generation. And they knew this would have to occur before God's law could be inaugurated.
Someday, God's law is coming to America. It could come rapidly after a period of cleansing and reform -- even in our day. And since Moses said it would eventually transpire, there needs to be a generation of Americans trained and motivated to put it into effect. Dr. Skousen has prepared this present study in hopes it might be of assistance.

W. Cleon Skousen
153 books181 followersW. Cleon Skousen (1913-2006) was a popular teacher, lecturer and author in the United States for over 40 years. Born in Raymond, Alberta, Canada on January 20, 1913, Dr. Skousen’s growing up years were spent in Canada, Mexico, and California.
At age 17 he was called to serve a two-year, LDS mission to Great Britain for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He later attended college at the San Bernardino Junior College where he was elected Student Body President.
With scholarships and encouragements, he left California in 1934 to work as a government aid in Washington DC. Later Dr. Skousen applied and was hired as an FBI agent.
Dr. Skousen married his sweetheart, Jewel Pitcher of San Bernardino, California, August 1936. During the past 69 years, they have raised 8 children and are the grandparents of 50 grandchildren and over 69 great-grandchildren. He resided in Salt Lake City, Utah, the remainder of his life.
Dr. Skousen served the FBI for 16 years (1935-1951), and worked closely with J. Edgar Hoover. In 1951 he was asked to join the faculty of Brigham Young University. Here he headed up the Student Alumni organization. In 1956 he was asked to serve as Chief of Police of Salt Lake City. During his 4 year service, he also wrote his national best seller, "The Naked Communist." He also was the editor of the nations leading police magazine, "Law And Order." In 1960 he left the police force and began speaking tours around the country on the political crisis during that time period. He also ran for the governors office in Utah, but narrowly missed the primaries.
In 1967, Dr. Skousen returned to BYU as a professor in the Religion Department. He taught classes on The Book of Mormon, The Old Testament, and early LDS Church History. He continued that assignment until his retirement in 1978.
In 1972 Dr. Skousen organized a non-profit educational foundation, named "The Freemen Institute." Later changed to "The National Center for Constitutional Studies" (NCCS), Dr. Skousen and his staff became the nation’s leading organization in teaching seminars on the Founding Fathers and the U.S. Constitution. His book, "The Making of America" has been used nation-wide to educate students on the original intent of the Founders.
His many books and recordings include subjects from raising boys to principles of good government, to prophetic history. Listed in this web site are all the books and tapes which are still available today; Dr. Skousen shares a wealth of knowledge and optimism--a "diamond dust" of exciting history and eternal principles of hope, that calms the sea in today's stormy world of seemingly chaos and uncertainty.
Dr. Skousen passed away peacefully in his home on January 9, 2006, of natural causes incident to age, just 11 days shy of his ninety-third birthday. He was lovingly surrounded by his family and wife Jewel, with whom he was anticipating their 70th wedding anniversary in August. He will truly be missed by many.

This book has a lot of great information regarding how "God's Law" is supposed to look in societies. It draws on many historical examples- all of which have failed to live in accordance of all aspects of God's Law. The relationship between how political ideas have been practiced and how they should be practiced- according to how they are designed in the Bible- is interesting and leads me to many more questions. I think this is a book that I will reference many times in my lifelong study of government.

Wonderfully shows how the Constitution of the United States of America was inspired by God. The Constitution has principles of a free and prosperous society for righteous people based on God's law in the Bible. Skousen relates how Israel was blessed when they followed God's law for society, and how they left it and abandoned their potential. He reviews the basis of political philosophy, including Babylonian (Hammurabi), Greek (Solon, Pericles, Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle), and Roman (Cicero) laws and society. A few chapters outline how Christianity apostatized from the true Gospel revealed by Jesus Christ and how England returned in some ways. He details what the Founding Fathers learned from study of the Bible, philosophers, and European experiences with government.
There is some repetition. The book could have been ten or fifteen percent shorter with tighter editing.
Skousen says America will be cleansed, and the desperation in the aftermath will be the chance to reform American law and society.
There is much useful background, but I didn't see any particular things I, as an individual, could do to reinstate Constitutional law or prepare people for its coming.

Reading this book was like attending a series of classes; albeit classes that I am sincerely interested in.
Many quotes are covered under multiple chapters because they apply to several topics.
I have gained a deeper understanding of law, the history of governments and of civilizations. I have received a stronger belief in the divine inspiration that brought about our (often abused) constitution. And I have an eternal perspective and sublime appreciation for God's Law, the Law of Moses. I feel this book has enriched my life on so many levels.

This is an in depth study of the basis for our Consitution and governing style and principles. I had read another book on the subject, years ago, but this is more thorough and very fascinating. A large percentage of our law came out of the Book of Deuteronomy, and you will understand what the highest type of law is and how we are now going through detrimental changes. This is a good book to gain insights into why our Constitution and government should be a light to the world and has been for many years. Sue Maxwell

Hooray! I finished it at last!!!! OK, so, that makes it sound like the most boring book in the world which isn't true. It was very good and very informative, but it's a lot to take in. I had to just read it a chapter at a time. I loved the history except for the actual constitutional voting part, (or whatever that's called). It has always bored me, but the rest was great. It's interesting how far we've come from what the founding fathers had intended.

Excellent book filled with important history and government from the time of Moses to current. I learned so much and feel that it is an important read for everyone. It is slightly annoying that the author often repeats himself, but if he is thinking it could be read by opening a random chapter here and there maybe that's why he did? I feel it's better read all the way through.

This is a long one...but very interesting. Did you know the Founders based the Constitution on Christian principles? They believed this nation was the place to reestablish the Abrahamic Covenant. The Founders knew the Bible well. This has more information then you can possibly absorb.

A wonderful broad spectrum of history along with a thorough understanding of the Law of Moses. Helps you to understand why Jesus' trial was a farce, why Nephi was justified in killing Laban... Also, a serving of Constitutional Law and how to hold to it.

Those who think the USA's founding fathers weren't guided by divine principles need to read this book. It's somewhat repetitious in parts, but an excellent analysis of what the founders read, believed, desired for the future, and of what must happen before the foretold last days.

This book gives comfort to all those who value the Constitution as a divine, sacred text. Skousen details how justice prevails when God's law is executed properly. I highly recommend this book to all civic leaders.

I would put it in 'Must-Reads' but it's not a volume for the likes of every reader out there. The content is worthy of an award but, again, it goes against the lower-leveled thinking that currently plagues this nation and its general body of leadership. I'll leave it there...

The biggest benefit, for me, from this book was a thorough understanding of the Law of Moses. I would have to review my notes and annotations again to remember all that was gained from this great book

I am reading this book right now, and I am really enjoying it. It reminds me of what our Founding Fathers studied in the Bible.
