Free Sings the Sea

The road to freedom starts when you slam the door of a single wide...

Eighteen-year-old Shanna has one goal this summer, and it's hitting the road. She won't be visiting colleges or backpacking through Europe, though. Instead, she plans to save her mom and little sister from the fists of her abusive stepfather and get them to the sea and freedom. What she didn't plan on was falling in love.

From the day Shanna walks out of the woods and into his life, Free knows what he wants to do with his summer. Oh, he'll train horses and help out on the farm like usual, but hanging out with his enchanting new visitor just became his top priority. Little does he know that Shanna needs more than a diversion this summer. She needs help saving her family. Next thing you know, Free is hitching up his horse trailer for a road trip he never saw coming, but won't steer away from, no matter how dangerous it might get.

And dangerous it will be, because Shanna's stepfather didn't come to play, and he's not about to let his family just ride off into the sunset.

Free Sings the Sea is a beautiful story of a young woman's inner strength and perseverance to save her mom and little sister from a domestic abuse situation. 18-year-old Shanna knows things with her mom and stepdad, Travis, are not good. She keeps an injury journal documenting all the times he has hurt her mom. Shanna must convince her mom to leave her awful stepdad before things get any worse. Amidst this storm, Shanna encounters Free, a young man and horse trainer, who takes a particular liking to Shanna and vows to help her in this crisis.

Bartlett's writing is lovely and fluid, painting a vivid setting without bogging down the reader with descriptions. The plot moves smoothly as well, and the moments of tension with the stepdad did get my heart racing! I adored the character Free and loved how patient he was with Shanna as she navigated her emotions. I loved every bit of their sweet romance.

This is a great read for those looking for an inspirational story that highlights the true nature of love, hope, and the importance of faith, family, and finding strength amidst adversity. I'm looking forward to the next book by Stacey Bartlett!

This is a gritty, realistic story that brims with hope and had me hooked from the very first page. It is the story of eighteen year old Shanna, who is living under the shadow of abuse and longs to find an escape for herself, her younger sister, and her mother. Watching Shanna choose courage despite the danger is inspiring, and the sweet romance she finds along the way is perfectly told. This is one of those wonderful stories that manages to tell the truth about how difficult life can be, and yet also helps you to be brave in the face of deep fear. We need more stories like this. Loved it.

“Free Sings the Sea” is an exquisite tale of hope over adversity where the promise of freedom for the female characters had me turning the pages into the wee hours to quell my craving.

Shanna’s fierce sense of protection towards her younger sister and mother shone as brightly as the moon over the misty, Blue Ridge Mountains—and it is from these soaring mountains and plush valleys nestling their trailer—where I embarked upon my journey of willing the characters to overcome the obstacles stacked against them from the festering cruelty of the antagonist stepfather and husband, Travis.
The backdrop of some of Mother Nature’s finest creations cocooning the cruel terror that existed in the family trailer lent a poetic, breath-holding slant — the expectant universe waiting for growth and freedom to bloom.

The striking scenery, a salve for the darker themes that lurked throughout this story, was beautifully captured by the author: I could smell the pine trees in the woods, zigzag through them while running free with the wild deer, taste the ripe pears, be enthralled by the horse under that big ol’ moon. Exquisite fairytale vibes of snaking danger coiling through the natural beauty and seemingly elusive escape from terror.

There’s a realistic depiction of the insidious and progressive nature of Domestic Abuse. The survival tactics used by the characters expertly captures the strategies utilised by victims of DA: the placement of the glass of water the night before, the creeping about the trailer and grounds, the various tones of voice used to placate the perpetrator, and the expert skills honed by victims to analyse said perpetrator’s current, twisted deployment.
This book was fantastic in creating the atmospheric tension: “Lia cries and pulls the blanket tightly over her head, because everyone knows that if you hide under a blanket, the monster in the room can’t get you. This one can, though. My one thought is to get him away from her and Mom who’s asleep at the end of the hall. And I need to do it fast.”

Travis’ dark character, and the abusive relationship he has with Shanna’s mother, is juxtaposed with the parallel relationship between Shanna and Free, a burgeoning bond that depicts the healthy tenets of a relationship built on trust, friendship, and boundary establishment, but mostly, respect.

This novel was a beautiful and satisfying read. Where there was tension, there was tenderness. Heartbreak turned to hope. Moments of despondent despair, balanced by delectable victory, and where a delicious denouement occurs and the nuanced title continued to wash over me long after I closed the final page…

Free Sings the Sea by Stacey Bartlett is a story about Shanna's, a teen living in the North Carolina mountains, journey to help her mother and little sister escape an abusive man.

The first page of the story is exquisitely written with descriptions that sound poetic. I marvel in awe that this work is a debut novel for Stacey, and enthusiastically look forward to see where the author's library of published credits will lead to with future endeavors.

It is rare for me to read a book in one setting. When I see other people boasting about such a feat, I wonder where I can learn these superpowers. With this novel, coming in at 171 pages, I was able to attempt such a skill. The story had me locked in from the first pages, and I only stopped to eat lunch, before I had to continue in pursuit to see how it was all going to end.

The novel does not bog you down with overwhelming descriptions and the words feel to me as if the main character is in front of you explaining everything that happened. She writes in an 'injury journal' the interactions the family has with the stepfather among other circumstances. The way the whole novel reads is almost as if the reader is introduced to this journal and is reading it with their own eyes. I had never read a novel in this writing style. It made me more eager to read with feeling as though I was a part of it, essentially making the reader an unknown observing character.

Romantic elements are infused within the novel that gives you euphoric chills and excitement. Above all, I thoroughly enjoyed the fact that this novel, with those elements, kept it at a PG level and without foul language, which seems to be the current norm in the genre with popular titles. So, kudos to Stacey for keeping the story enjoyable without having to cringe on unnecessary scenes and language.

With this novel, as I read it, I kept getting the sense it would make a great Lifetime or Hallmark movie. So, if any producer for those networks see this, I can assure you this would be a great project to introduce to your library, and one to which I'll be eager to watch when it releases.

To all readers who love women's fiction, I highly recommend picking this book up and reading it today. If you are looking for a quick read for the beach or a picnic, take this book with you!

This book is beautiful. It has so many of the elements of storytelling that keep you engaged from start to finish- Intensity and high stakes, romance, faith, found family, humor... I could go on, but I would highly recommend this story to young adults in particular, but really to any readers who want to immerse themselves in a world where love doesn’t hurt- it truly only brings hope and healing. The romance is the kind of first love most dream of... but this isn’t some typical high school fling. The stakes are much higher, and there is only so much to be said about that without going into spoiler territory, but I will say that it is the catalyst for saving some amazing characters from a terribly bleak situation. This book will undoubtedly strike a chord with women (and children of women) who have been victims of domestic violence. On that note, it is so refreshing to see a story from an author with firsthand experience shedding a light on a topic that is so under-discussed!! Let’s keep that conversation going and push domestic violence awareness into the mainstream!!

Free Sings the Sea by Stacey Bartlett is a poignant and gripping story of courage, love, and resilience. The novel follows 18-year-old Shanna, who is determined to save her mother and younger sister from the clutches of her abusive stepfather. Her plan involves a daring escape to freedom by the sea—a dream of safety and serenity far removed from the life they’ve known.

Unexpectedly, Shanna crosses paths with Free, a kind-hearted young man who becomes enamored with her strength and determination. As they form a bond, Free finds himself joining Shanna’s mission, embarking on a perilous road trip that tests their resolve and exposes the risks of confronting an abuser intent on maintaining control.

The book balances the intensity of domestic violence themes with moments of healing, hope, and love. Bartlett weaves a tale that highlights the bravery required to break free from toxic cycles and the importance of solidarity and support.

At 187 pages, this Kindle Edition offers an emotional and fast-paced read for those drawn to stories of survival, empowerment, and young love under extraordinary circumstances.

This book was nothing less than beautiful. This story depicts courage and bravery to face the monster of domestic abuse. And wonderfully paints a picture of love in all its forms. The main character captures your heart right from the start, and you cannot help but feel a part of her world and care for everyone and everything that she does. This book is worth reading. I could not put it down until I finished it.

Bartlett captures the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains in her well-crafted prose, just as she captures the heartache and struggle of a family working to free themselves from an abusive oppressor. Shanna’s courage and hope shine through this novel, and her story sheds light on the challenges of finding agency when your voice is threatened. Good exists in this world and Bartlett’s novel shows that the good is within us all through our acts of kindness. A motivational story of love and strength.

A heartbreaking story written beautifully of discovery and healing from a strong-willed main character. Shana navigates a treacherous home life to save herself, her little sister, and her abused mother. With a little romance tucked into the story, she (re)discovers her life and future and most of all hope.

Free Sings the Sea is a heartwarming story of healing and recovery. The characters are vulnerable, yet courageous and you can't help but root for them. There are strong themes throughout of resilience, kindness, and mental health, as well as the restorative power of nature and friendship. Also, if you like animals, this is sure to be a winner.

Free Sings the Sea is stunning young adult tale of love and perseverance, reminding us that it’s never too late to stop accepting the unacceptable. The lush description is full of beauty and light despite the heavy subject matter, and the characters will make you believe there’s a handful of heroes for every monster. I’m excited for more from this author!

I got the opportunity to read this copy early. This story kept me on hook. I read it less than three days because I had to know what happened next. The pacing is really good, characters are well developed and I enjoyed one of them (no not Travis) and the summer vibe. The romance is sweet. There are some topics that may be sensitive but the author did it well without being too detailed and kept it in a way that doesn't take away from the reading experience. If you like sweet romance and finding hope and healing from the past, you might like this book.
