I haven't started a book and not finished it in years, but this one did it. I was really interested in the topics covered by this book, but the author's sensationalism and horrible writing makes this one tough to read. He is incapable of even coming across as subjective. I get it - heavy metals in the food and environment are bad. Don't really need the anti-vaxxer narrative and excessive use of Thesaurus.com words for "disgusting".

Research this guy before you read the book. He's the founder of a junk science website and quite a ...particular... political agenda. I didn't realize this when I picked this up, but it shines through quite clearly. I recommend staying completely clear of this book and anything else written by this guy, but if you must read it, pay close attention to his sources.

A special thank you to BenBella and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

FOOD FORENSICS: The Health Ranger's Guide to Foods that Harm and Foods that Heal is an essential book by Mike Adams. The Hidden Toxins Lurking in Your Food and How You Can Avoid Them for Lifelong Health. An important message for every woman, man, teen, boy, and girl. No matter your age. It is time to take control, folks! I am a huge fan and supporter.

The hidden truths exposed. The research, and proof. Our food is slowly killing us. Food Forensics discloses how food contamination happens and why it matters. Providing consumers valuable information on how you can protect yourself.

Watch the Video.

Deception and consumer fraud, from Whole Foods, and many others; from organic, natural, superfoods, and dietary companies. Many companies, food suppliers, markets, and restaurants sell products that are poisoning us, with toxic heavy metals and many other hidden additives and preservatives. It is time to get your heads out of the sand.

When these food companies are made aware of these toxins, they invoke denial and offer willfully ambiguous communication, rather than transparency. Just like drug companies, weapons manufacturers, and Wall Street--many natural product companies seem to be run by people who place profits over consumer safety. We saw what the tobacco industry did. Sometimes it is too late and the damage has been done.

The sad situation people are lazy; they do not want to make costly changes, just like the consumers who hide behind their ignorance. Some people will not take control of their own health, bodies, and make the necessary changes. The companies do not want the cost. It cannot be done with only a small number of people. It takes everyone to take a stand, refusing to buy these products to enforce accountability and changes. If you discontinue buying, they are forced to make changes, accordingly.

Consumers cannot continue to buy the processed foods which contain additives and preservatives, filled with chemicals, poisons, and toxins. While they continue to wonder why they are gaining weight and spend thousands of dollars with numerous health issues. Running to the doctors who prescribe more unnecessary drugs, further complicating their health. In our busy world, today, many families and parents are subjecting their children and themselves with poison, and do not take the matter seriously.

As a huge advocate for accountability, in the corporate world (a SOX whistleblower), as well as the food and health industry, this book contains scientific truths. Everyone needs to take notice, buy the book, and take our food shopping and health more seriously. What are you putting in your bodies?

Trust me, I did so, over thirteen years ago and continue this fight for better food. At that time, there was not a lot was published, and had to do my own research. I wish this book had been around.

Food Forensics: The unleashing. Hidden truths. Nothing held back. Documentation of these products with data acquired from 2013 to 2016. I liked the fact it also spurs widespread denials and even a few lawsuit threats—plus efforts to silence this work, which is not surprising. These companies are training their employees to lie. It is sad to know our food is grown on lands where industrial waste is intentionally dumped and used as fertilizer, plus more.

Consumers cannot hide behind “if the FDA approves” it – it must be OK. Wrong! I believe nothing they say. No accountability. From the food manufacturers, FDA, media, food advertising – colluding to ignore this science and preventing consumers from learning the truths you need to know.

Natural News Forensic Food Lab looks at the industry closely, by randomly purchasing products who make claims and do not comply with the levels published. It is very important if you have not done your research as I have done over the years. The book explains the way in which humans absorb these contaminants and the resulting health effects. (plus why they are so difficult to get rid of).

As I have told my son which lives in another state with a family of his own. They wonder why they have so much inflammation, digestive disorders, and sickness in their twenties, thirties, and forties. Others suffer from neurological damage, organ failure, heart, lung, cancer, and other serious diseases and conditions; Alzheimer’s and dementia- the list goes on and on. Increased toxins in everyday foods.

We all are walking time bombs from toxic metals, chemicals, and routine consumption of contaminated foods, personal care products, and environmental exposure.

The FDA should be doing what these folks are doing. From arsenic, pesticides, leads, and other toxins - even in our drinking water. Our bodies are not made for repeated exposure to arsenic. Why I gave up meats; another story. Look at their conditions and what animals are eating.

It is critical we take control of what we eat and what environmental toxins we subject ourselves to. I am very passionate about these critical subjects. No one will do it for you. By not accepting what others say is passable. It is critical to take a stand. Not many of us genuinely care. Some are in denial, or not educated. Learn the facts. Read labels, and find the hidden things. Like myself and others, the urgency is life-threatening.

On a personal note:
I have always had allergies; however, about thirteen years ago I started my journey. I began experiencing all sort of serious allergic issues, from chemicals, medications, environmental, and mostly serious food allergies. It became so serious with emergency rooms visits, an array of allergy specialists, physicians, and cardiologist, etc.

With full blown anaphylaxis, many times with foods; always carry an Epi-Pen, ongoing sinus infections, ear infections, heart palpitations, tachycardia, PVCs, PACs, headaches, digestive issue, thyroid problems, etc. Even a drop of cream with preservative will send me into anaphylaxis. I have to be extremely careful of everything I put on my body or ingest. It is life-threatening.

This was very serious and began keeping a food journal of everything I was eating from morning until evening, any snacks, and noted the date, time, symptoms, ingredients, as well as a recording of blood pressure, heart rate, and exercise. (I even developed extensive excel spreadsheets for two years). It was well worth the time and effort. The food additives, preservatives, and toxins were causing many of my heart problems and other reactions.

I had always been pretty healthy; however, over the course of five years, I began eliminating foods and seeing a big difference. I have an entire list of additives which create havoc. Some of these foods may take up to 12 hrs. after ingesting to notice symptoms, some sooner; the aftermath- some may last up to days or a week. I saw proof of this with heart tests and 24 hr Holter heart monitor. When you graph and chart, what you see is astounding. You see the heart rate changes, insomnia, and blood pressure. Totally out of control. I am also unable to take any medications, vitamins, and highly sensitive to environmental toxins.

In addition to my food research, I have to stay abreast with my environment. I live in a high-rise apartment building and property management. From toxins, fumes, mold, cleaning supplies, ventilation systems, etc. (an advocate) forcing them to eliminate air fresheners, perfumes, smoke, and certain cleaning products, as well as other toxins. Showing proof of the seriousness and health hazards- take your complaints to local and state levels. You cannot sit back idly. It takes everyone working together. Let your voice be heard. You only have one life. Live it toxic free, or as close as you can.

I have been vegan for the last eight years. (No dairy, bread, grains, or meats). No sugars, flours, or processed foods, preservatives, or additives. Nothing in a can, box, or freezer. No alcohol, caffeine, or fruit juices. Wine is full of sulfites (horrible). If you eat correctly, the food cravings for the bad stuff will go away. Fresh organic vegetables. However, even with these, you have to be cautious. I do eat some fruits, as well. I stay away from some which cause inflammation.

Not only did the heart problems cease, no more anaphylaxis reactions, and other disorders. I felt great, and continue to maintain the size 4-6 with no weight gain. You feel lighter. It is worth the extra effort. It is a lifestyle choice and one I am glad I made. I take my foods very seriously and dedicated to maintaining my health. I do not dine out (do not trust foods) and carry my own food when traveling. If I go out with others, I do not eat or drink. BTW, I stopped shopping at Whole Foods over five years ago.

I literally could throw out everything in my son’s pantry, refrigerator, and freezer. They see what I eat, which is vegan fresh organic vegetables and water. It works for me. However, they choose to stay with the same bad processed foods and sugars. From dining out to home meals, and snacks. They like convenience. I am still working on them.

I also work with hotel groups and these properties are in tune with natural foods, special diets, vegans, and healthy food choices. When traveling shop, and demand what you need, or go elsewhere. It takes education, and wise shopping and determination to take control over your food choices.

Make changes. This should carry through to our children, and grandchildren. It amazes me how many people are not aware of the dangers of foods and how they can damage your body and health. If they read about them, they disregard and do not take it seriously, until they are hit with health problems.

The detrimental health effects triggered by gradually accumulating minuscule concentrations of toxins through repeated dietary or environmental exposure. In addition, our dietary exposure to toxic heavy metals through foods is a far greater problem than most people suppose. From the lack of exercise and no sweating, heavy metals accumulate in bodies of the obese. This book is an excellent source.

I really enjoy Mike Adams, The Health Ranger and NaturalNews.com. A fabulous team, doing great work to expose and take initiatives to help promote the road to more accountability of the food industry. Awareness. Highly support anyone or cause, who helps expose and educate consumers of our food industry.

A "must read" book and source for everyone! Protect yourself. Your health. Take control of what you eat and your body. Join the fight! Buy the book, and take the journey to a better life and world.

Most of the things that affect our overall health are things we can monitor and do something about - such as the amount of sleep we get every night, our stress level, poor diet, lack of exercise and hydration. But author, Mike Adams reminds us that the real dangers to our health (that we often overlook) comes from long-term exposure to toxins over time. These toxins can come from countless sources - pesticides, toothpaste, dish soap, laundry detergent, perfumes, shampoo, processed food, car exhaust, herbs & spices, cosmetics and more. Adams meticulously covers the heavy metal toxins that reck havoc on our health. Beginning with "Arsenic" and ending with "Tin", Adams elaborates on the chemical contaminants and food ingredients (as contaminants) and gives the analysis data derived from testing countless popular foods and beverages for heavy metals and harmful elements. What he doesn't include are the brand names of the products he analyzes. Nevertheless, you have to respect a man that purchased his own ICP-MS lab equipment (and had it professionally calibrated) in order to do his research. (Shouldn't the FDA be doing this?). Adam also includes a guide to natural detoxification in his book that is designed to help your body naturally rid itself of these toxins. Thank you Mike Adams! Your book reminded me that being healthy isn't simply about eating clean...it's about living clean!

In "Food Forensics," the author talks about his mission and his lab where he tests food for toxic contaminants. He described how toxic metals get into your food, what happens when you eat that food, and what will actually help rid your body of these toxins. He went into detail about dangerous metals (arsenic, mercury, cadmium, aluminum, copper, tin), chemical contaminants (BPA, BPS, hexane, pesticides), food ingredients (aspartame, MSG, artificial colors, and much more), and animal feed contamination.

He also described what foods help your body to detox from these dangers. He pointed out that this is a natural, everyday process and mentioned easy-to-find foods that help the process.

A large section of the book was a list of foods--including organic and superfoods--that he's tested in his lab and the levels of toxins they contained. Unfortunately, this was such a mess on my ebook review copy that I can't tell how useful it actually is. It looked like simple rows of numbers, though, so you'd need to do some interpreting of those numbers.

The author painted a very depressing view of things: every food seems to have some level of toxic load, it would take generations to reverse this if we started now, and there's no hope that this will change this anytime soon with big business more concerned with profits than long-term health.

I received an ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.

Mike Adams, one of the true patriots in America today, discusses one of the most important topics of our time; the relationship between the food we eat and toxins found in those foods. Adams shares detailed information based on truthful scientific analysis about heavy metals, pesticides/chemicals, and food based contaminants (dyes, MSG, etc.). He talks about how these toxins end up in our food supply, the weak governmental regulations that regularly jeopardize our health, and then introduces ways we can reduce and eliminate these toxins through our food choices. This should be required reading for all Americans (really, all of humanity) so that we can heal our bodies through good nutrition and use of healthy personal care products since our leaders in government (both sides of the aisle) refuse to rank the health of its people as a top priority.

Thank you NetGalley for the free ARC.

Fine, now I have nothing to eat. This book will take you aback, because pretty much everything we eat is contaminated with metals, pesticides, preservatives - you name it. This is most definitely a sad state of affairs. What does not work for me are some of the solution - for example, move to the country far away from pollution. Err, sorry, that may not be possible. All I can do is be more aware of what I am putting into my body. I am also not quite buying that eating coleslaw negates the effect of bbq and burnt meat on my body. Maybe I will skip the grill out for tonight! Thought provoking.

An eye-opening read on how to reduce the harmful effects of food contaminants and make informed food choices.

In his Taxes lab, Mike Adams has a powerful machine called ICP-MS that can detect metals like nickel, lead, and mercury in even tiny amounts in any type of food. It’s like something out of a science fiction movie, but it’s real technology. When he started using this machine, he found some surprising results. For example, popular ginkgo herbs grown in China contained five parts per million of toxic lead. All of Adams’ further trials started revealing what was really present in all sorts of foods, ranging from fast foods to superfoods and supplements.

With the goal of making this concerning information accessible to the general public, Mike Adams wrote a book entitled ‘Food Forensics.’

Author’s background

Mike Adams, known as the ‘Health Ranger,’ is a renowned scientific researcher specialising in forensic food analysis and is considered an authoritative expert on heavy metals contamination within the natural product industry.

He is the founding editor of NaturalNews.com and serves as the lab science director at CWC Labs. His expertise includes the accurate analysis of toxic elements in water samples using ICP-MS instrumentation, as well as proficiency in running various analytical instruments to detect pesticides, herbicides, industrial chemicals, and pharmaceutical residues.

What is the book about?

In ‘Food Forensics,‘ Mike Adams delves into the hidden truth about what lies inside our food, including toxic elements and harmful additives. With meticulous testing conducted in his state-of-the-art laboratory, Adams exposes heavy metal contaminations, pesticides, and other harmful substances present in various groceries, fast foods, dietary supplements, spices, and protein powders.

The book takes an in-depth look at various topics, including:

• What is really inside our food?
• How do certain food additives affect our bodies and how they are made?
• What can we do to prevent ourselves from ingesting harmful substances such as heavy metals?

‘Food Forensics’ is divided into three parts. The first one delves into the world of toxins and contaminants present in our food, shedding light on their origins and histories. Part two offers valuable insights into detoxifying our bodies and maintaining optimal health in today’s industrialised world. Final charts present results of testing popular foods and beverages for specific elements, including heavy metals. This chart aims to show what products contain ‘acceptable’ concentrations of certain contaminants and what foods should be avoided.

Key takeaways from ‘Food Forensics’

1. Buy organic foods whenever possible, especially with meat

Adams points out that investing in USDA-certified organic meats is worth the extra cost. These meats come from livestock raised without antibiotics or synthetic growth hormones.

For beef, look for USDA certification for grass-fed cattle, ensuring they have year-round access to grass and forage crops, without any grain in their diet. For poultry and eggs, seek out free-range options that offer true outdoor access to chickens without crowding.

Consider local producers, especially those found at farmer’s markets, as they often offer better-sourced meats and eggs, even without formal USDA certification. Opting for organic and locally sourced options not only benefits your health but also supports sustainable and responsible food production practices.

2. Use healthy fats to detox from bad fats

‘Food Forensics’ emphasises that to eliminate the toxic effects of bad fats in your body, you need to start consuming good fats, as they will gradually replace the harmful ones.

Our body’s cells are built with fat molecules found in our blood. By adopting a diet rich in good fats from sources like avocados, chia seeds, clean fish oils, and high omega-3 oils, we can positively impact the health of our cells. Conversely, consuming fats from unhealthy sources like cheese, onion rings, and genetically modified soybean oil can lead to negative effects on our cellular membranes.

To transform your body and improve overall health, focus on changing what you eat. By nourishing your body with nutrient-rich and beneficial fats, you can bring about positive changes at the cellular level and enhance your overall well-being. Remember, the path to a healthier you starts with making better food choices and embracing the power of good fats.

3. Eliminate toxins in household water

Ensuring clean and non-toxic water for hydration is just as crucial as avoiding toxins in our food. Tap water often contains impurities and toxic chemicals, making it essential to use an effective water filtration device at home. Never drink unfiltered tap water, as it can harbour harmful substances, including carcinogenic compounds like chloramines.

Adams gives examples of water filters that excel in removing toxic heavy metals, these are Big Berkey, Zen Water Systems and Zerowater. Reverse osmosis (RO) water systems also prove highly effective in this regard.

Strengths and weaknesses, according to readers’ reviews

Strengths:
• Comprehensive coverage of harmful substances in our food, their effects on health, and practical ways to avoid them.
• Thorough validation of concerns about food toxicity, backed by over 900 scientific footnotes, making it a credible and informative read.
• Clear and simple explanations of complex scientific concepts.
• A balanced approach that caters to both health enthusiasts and casual readers, providing valuable • insights to all.
• Fearless confrontation of issues related to pollution, contamination, and misconduct by big businesses, shedding light on critical problems in the food system.

Weaknesses:
• The dense and rambling style of writing may make it challenging for some readers to engage with the book from start to finish.
• The suggested solutions, such as moving to a pollution-free area, may not be practical or feasible for all readers, limiting the applicability of the advice provided.

Best quotes from ‘Food Forensics’

“Not all elements should cause the same degree of concern at the same levels. Mercury, for example, becomes worrisome at relatively low levels in foods (50 ppb, for example), while cadmium at 50 ppb is generally not much of a concern. But at 500 ppb, cadmium may begin to warrant attention, and if cadmium is present at 5,000 ppb, then it’s clearly a concern.”

“I strongly recommend every household be equipped with some sort of water-filtration device due to the very poor quality of municipal water. Never drink unfiltered tap water! It contains many toxic chemicals, including some that were not added by the water treatment plant but rather formed in the pipes as the water made its way to your home. One example would be chloramines, carcinogenic chemical compounds that form when ammonia and chlorine are added to treated tap water.”

“Your body won’t eliminate water-soluble toxins very well if you’re dehydrated, so drinking plenty of water is the first and simplest way to support your everyday detox strategy.”

Final takeaway

Mike Adams’ book, ‘Food Forensics,’ presents eye-opening insights into the hidden dangers lurking in our food. With the help of cutting-edge technology, Adams uncovers the truth about toxic elements, harmful additives, and contaminants found in various food products.

This book is a must-read for health-conscious individuals, researchers, and consumers who seek to understand the real state of our food system and make informed choices to protect their health.

A VERY informative and academic read. I really enjoyed the "case studies" he did in each section that gave history to some very interesting and sometimes hard to believe stories about different foods we eat and how they came to have in them the ingredients they do. Also really appreciated the history behind a lot of the additives in the foods. It was a pretty dry read though and the last 1/3 of the book is just numbers from tests done in the machine to test heavy metal content.

There are things in the books that I personally do not agree with, but I am not one to throw the baby out with the bath water. Lots of good points made and interesting thoughts to ponder.
Takeaways for me:
-Continue to eat my fruits and veggies with my meals
-Take vitamins WITH my meals
-strawberries and garlic are excellent for helping bind and keep heavy metals out of my body
-Buy organic when I can, and especially with meat
-Buy foods grow in US or EU, or S. America when I can
-China, India and Thailand have the most polluted land
-Pay attention to the type of water filter I use

Also...the book was published in 2016, so I am not sure if there are updates to countries or any of the metals/additives.

Fascinating read, makes you think twice about what you eat and where you get it from.

I found Food Forensics by Mike Adams to be a very interesting book. I was not familiar with M Adams, but the title and cover looked very interesting.

M Adams warned that Part 1: Everything You Need To Know About Toxic Elements would be technical. And it was. I skimmed Part 1 and really didn't feel like I short-changed myself.

I read all of Parts 2 & 3. I found them to be very interesting and extremely disturbing. I found it very alarming that lobbyist and special interest groups can sway the FDA to their side, which is not necessarily in the best interest or health of individuals.

I would highly recommend Food Forensics to readers who like: books about the quality of food (animal or plant) and how lobbyists/special interest groups impact decisions by the FDA.

I would give this book twenty stars if I could!!! Mike Adams tells what substances are harmful to our health, how and why they are harmful, where they can be found, and how to avoid them. He explains the science behind all of this in clear and simple terms. The book strikes a very good balance -- technical enough to teach something new to someone who already knows a lot about health, but simple enough to be interesting to a casual reader who doesn't know much yet. I highly recommend it!!!

I received a free electronic copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This was a solid book on an important subject to our health... what we consume may be toxic to us! This said, the book was (IMO) intentionally scary And had little accessible prescription/remedy for the problem it outlines. Both (IMO) are a problem for this book. While most subject were covered with minimal political spin, somethings (Nitrosamines in meat) were Not; IMO that's a problem. Overall, those unfamiliar with the issue of Food and Water contamination by Heavy Metals and poisons used many to save money or provide pesticides/germicides for crops/ranches Will be educated to the Why and How these contaminates! I recommend everyone Read this book!

Mike fearlessly confronts the problems of pollution, contamination and deliberate misconduct of big business. Those businesses who consider slowly poisoning you and your family as just another cost of doing business… but you’ve got to please those shareholders right?!

This is one of the few health books I’d consider mandatory if you want to understand our food system in full detail, and just whats happening to our food system as we slowly destroy it, and in the process, ourselves. A brave book and an important read for all health advocates! 5 Stars!

An eye-opening expose of the epidemic of toxic food and a guide to biological redemption.
This is a dense science book (+900 scientific footnotes) that thoroughly validates the concerns of the health-conscious about food toxicity. If you think that alarm over toxins in food (and a lot of other things we consume) is mere scaremongering you may want to read this book as it thoroughly documents this catastrophic problem that we each face personally and collectively as a civilization.

Kudos to Mike Adams! He is well educated in the science of food and has a private lab where he runs tests on our food, America's food, checking for heavy metals...something the FDA foesn't do. Less than 1% of our foods shipped in from China and other foreign countries is even tested for quality or purity.

This guy is here to help. He is the reason we all now know about the high levels of heavy metal found in nearly all Turmeric shipped from overseas and sold here in the U.S. But, he doesn't stop there. He also provides information on foods that bind to each type of metal to help eliminate it from your body. For example, parsley and cilantro binds with heavy metals in your brain and can help with ellimination. This is an excellent read, but at times it was a little hard to understand.

The author definitely believes in some shady pseudo-science (e.g. sweating out your toxins), but on the other hand he does seem to know how to test foods for heavy metals. This book definitely made me suspicious of many food additives, which backs up the common-sense generally-accepted advice: avoid processed foods. Also, stay far away from foods imported from Asia. I would have liked to find out more about seafood and meats (which make up most of my diet).
