I never knew if you truly loved me. It’s a pity; maybe I’ll never get to know in this lifetime. I’ve left you enough to live on. Be stronger in the future and live well.
This novel conveyed the poignant and melancholic vibe suited perfectly to the plot and the protagonist's perspective of life. The feeling of unbearable regret of not cherishing the only person who stayed by his side for a long time and not being able to express his love until it was too late. The feeling of deep yearning for the person he once lost, having no choice but to continue living a few more years without him because that person wished him to live well. But then fate gave him a second chance to go back before everything started but instead of feeling relief, he felt the fear of experiencing the same pain again and losing the person for the second time. The angst is not right in the face but more like creeping and staying in the background, making you feel repressed and the pain is dull but lingering.
Just like how the title showed, this is the daily life of the protagonist, so it's more slow paced and the plot is not intense event one after another. There are parts that nothing happen and seemed kind of monotonous but this feels more realistic because that's what happens in real life. But that's not to say that it's irrelevant because those slow, tedious moments are part of the character's arc. I always found it fascinating to read slow paced slice of life like this, as if I was reading someone's biography. I couldn't say I enjoyed this because I don't think 'enjoy' is the right word to describe reading something so sad. But I was really invested and I was sincerely rooting for the MC to find the happiness he so much deserved.
The MC's past life is actually in the form of quick flashbacks but you can still vividly feel the depression and desolation he experienced. There's also a small 'past life' arc where it focused in MC's life post-disfigurement when he received the ML's support. After that small arc are a few chapters leading to the ending, more domesticated life between the MC and ML, tying the loose ends for the conclusion but I loved that not everything has a resolution, making it more realistic.
I also just want to say that there's a lot of great representation of depression, panic attack, disabilities and more. I appreciate that the author is very sensitive when it comes to these delicate topics. I think he/she has enough knowledge about these to properly represent it and not just include it for the sake of the plot. I also loved the writing style and of course, kudos as well to the translator.
I highly recommend this but be sure that you're mentally prepared because this novel consists of dark and heavy emotions.
I feel like I heard about a storm, went to witness it, and found that it never arrived like people were actively preventing it. It’s not even the silence before or after the storm… and there isn’t even a misunderstanding between the main characters! Come on give me something that hurts.
Well okay it was slightly sad at the beginning.
Anyway I’m dropping this at 25% (chapter 35). This is very much a me problem I’m an angst and tension but must have a happy ending monster kind of like Cookie Monster and I simply wasn’t fed.
If you’re wondering whether you should pick it up the main characters are LOVELY. Absolutely precious.
Felt very meh about this story. My rating is more like 2.5 stars but rounding up to 3 here.
I generally like stories about the MC being reborn, since the face slapping feels so satisfying, but there's really not much of it in this story. I should've known, since the title does literally say "the daily life," but it's more of a slice of life story that follows the MC through his day to day. Not the most exciting, I have to say. There's a reason why I don't usually enjoy slice of life stories...
The story follows our MC, Chen Wengang, as he's given another chance at life when he's reborn into his 20 year old body. In his previous life, he stubbornly held onto his adolescent love and got burned (figuratively but sadly also literally when the wife of said love arranged to have someone splash sulfuric acid on his face) as a result. However, in his darkest moment, another wealthy scion called Huo Niansheng helps him, and they spend some time together before HNS suddenly dies in an accident at sea. When he left, Chen Wengang was left wondering whether HNS really loved him and if so, why.
Now that Chen Wengang has been reborn, he's determined to live his life differently. He resolutely cuts off his existing romantic entanglements with his first love Zheng Yucheng and instead tries to get closer to Huo Niansheng instead. In the process, he also has to deal with a lot of messy family drama, such as Zheng Yucheng not willing to let him go, ZYC's potential fiance and wife in the previous life He Wanxin causing trouble for him, another adopted member of the Zheng family secretly disparaging him online on the school forums due to jealousy, etc.
However, because Chen Wengang lived to his 40s or possibly even 50s in his previous life, his mentality towards insults is very stable, and most of the things the young people around him do don't faze him at all, much to their disappointment. He focuses on completing his studies while working part-time, living a peaceful life while helping others, and building his relationship with Huo Niansheng.
The story felt very flat and didn't have much in terms of a serious conflict that continued throughout the story or even a climax near the end. I was a bit bored while reading it and thought about dropping it at several points, but I kept hoping for something more and the author never delivered. There was one small reveal near the end that surprised me, but it came too late and the author didn't spend much time on it before moving on. The end of the main story came abruptly and completely caught me by surprise because it read like any other chapter. Like I said, there isn't much in terms of highs and lows for this story, which makes it hard to gauge where you are in the story, as it feels like it can continue indefinitely.
I liked both the main characters but neither of them were very exciting to read about. Chen Wengang lives a very stable life, so that's the kind of character that you want to be in reality, but sadly it doesn't make for an interesting read. Huo Niansheng at least had some sarcasm and small schemes going for him, but CWG didn't have any of that. It was nice to see how CWG's mental health slowly improves in this life, as he suffered from depression and other mental illnesses in his previous life, but other than that, he wasn't a great main character.
I skimmed the last couple parts. After the main story ends, the first set of extra chapters talks about their previous life and why Huo Niansheng decided to help him and what their life was like together before HNS's death. The second set of chapters is extra chapters for the main story in present day. These I actually read the entirety of. And the last set of chapters is a what if scenario, what if Chen Wengang had decided to break it off with Zheng Yucheng in their previous life?
I would’ve liked this more if it was much shorter. I did enjoy reading about Chen Wengang (MC) and Huo Niansheng’s (ML) relationship and daily lives but as a slice of life novel, this was much too long for my taste. Around the halfway mark of the story, I started skimming through chapters because the pacing was quite slow too and there were a lot of scenes I found quite unnecessary. Obviously the main highlight of this novel is CWG and HNS’s relationship and with regard to that, it was a slow burn with a happy ending. They’re both mature characters and they know what they want from their own selves and from each other, so the development of their relationship is stable overall, with a lot of sweetness from both sides. Both characters also evolved as the story progressed and they became better for and because of each other which I liked.
The only good thing about the story was how the author describes facing trauma, depression and panic attacks. Also how much patience the victim needs by their loved ones to recover. But other than the male character is quite bland, and basically a pushover without the male lead he hardly could do anything. He is a 40 year old back in his 20 year old body but doesn't act like one. The only time it shows is when he is dealing with charity work. The male lead, his friends and even his adopted siblings characterisation are much more interesting than him. Overall it is a one time read, the story focuses mainly on the romance between the two leads. You won't see the drama, revenge normally seen in the reborn setting story
Notes: I normally have doubts about titles this long (and it seems anime stories have gone the same route), but I was surprised to find that the story was well-written, with characters and events that are developed so masterfully. The protagonist is also surprisingly mature (I mean, I'm almost 50, but I'm still petty af hahaha). Would have expected dog blood drama, but no. I like the kind of calmness with which most adversities have been dealt with. I just knocked one star down because the author seems to be singling out Filipinos (first mentioning Filipino pirates in an author's note, and then later Filipino maids). Pointing out the race both times were unnecessary. If they're going to license this in English, better to revise that.
Rare it is for me to come across a book that speaks to me. The words lie heavy on my mind, the story though not uncommon leaves a deep impression on me. Chen Wengang and Huo Nienshang are truly one of the greenest pairs I've read. The execution of the plot stands out. Yes, it's another reborn second chance fix it but the efforts are made, I do like salted fish protagonist but a perseverant mc makes it way more real. I do want more face slapping since I've read the past chapters but for now it is beautiful as it is. Must appreciate the author for their references. I found a new artist to listen to as well.
