The fourth volume in a supernatural murder mystery that explores the complicated bond between father and son and cements itself squarely in a corner of the MASSIVE-VERSE! Collects issues #19-24.
With his body back under his control, Dylan sets out to round up some of Rogue Sun's enemies that were freed in the previous arc, with various degrees of success.
I really like a lot of the world building in this series, perhaps moreso than any other Massiveverse book. There's a lot of depth, and a lot of inference as to just how deep a lot of this stuff goes, and I'm excited to find out more about the various magical factions at place. We get a deeper look at the Aviary in this arc when someone targets the Ravyn Queen for death, and there's some more stuff about The Protection as well to boot.
Dylan and his dad's dynamic is the lynchpin of the book, and I get that, but it has become a little repetitive by this point, so the focus elsewhere for this arc is a refreshing change, giving us some more insight into Dotty and her family, including new character Divinity and how she plays into things.
The artwork's still solid, though I felt like the earlier issues in the volume are a bit more slapdash than the later ones, which feels backwards?
Whatever's going on, Rogue Sun's still head and shoulders above the pack in the Massiveverse for me.
Had a lot of fun with this one - I really like Divinity - she's a great addition to the book and the Perfection seem to be shaping up to be great villains. I was a bit more meh on the Aviary plot, but the Philistine was a great bad guy.
Rogue Sun is just a great superhero story. No bells, no whistles - it's a great superhero story told earnestly. This was pretty clearly a stage-setting volume - you introduce Divinity, you set up the Perfection, you set up a little somebody changing roles - it's a good volume.
I read #19-24 in single issue form, so this review is technically a little dishonest - but I should mention that there were some pretty obvious editing errors (speech bubbles formatted incorrectly, additional letters in the lettering, missing periods) that should have been caught before release in the single issue format. I'll have to check and see if those were in the final volume release.
so this is clearly the buildup volume for the next arc. It does a good job with that task, introducing new characters and factions while distabilising some of the previously introduced elements. I think the cliffhanger at the end makes a certain amount of sense and really sets up some questions that I'm looking forward to the answers to.
Rogue sun is fun I like the experimental stuff here as well. (Issue 7 and 19) I’m not to sure about the actual main character though. Weird choice for a hero and he didn’t get too much character development yet. But we will see where he ends up. The villains are all enjoyable and have fitting designs. Rogue Suns design is awesome.
