As the subtitle indicates, these are recipes anyone can make, which makes this a very good cookbook for less experienced cooks. More seasoned cooks aren't likely to find much inspiration from the mostly routine dishes.
Recipes are well-written and easy to make since they employ lots of shortcuts (e.g., refrigerated doughs, jarred peppers and canned beans.). This doesn't mean they fall short on flavour and who doesn't appreciate helpful ways to save time? It is not surprising that there are well-styled full page colour photos throughout the book since the author is a popular instagramer. What was a little disappointing was not all recipes are pictured.
Love this cookbook and story that Diane provides in the beginning. I relate to her love of family, and how cooking and preparing good food is her love language to friends and family. Great read, great recipes and love seeing her new reels and videos on Instagram. Great person and great read. Thank you!!
Diane Morrisey is an inspiration! She taught herself how to cook by watching Food Network and reading cookbooks, then throwing dinner parties to show off what she’d learned. Her friends started asking for help, which turned into a catering business. From there she got a job at Whole Foods and worked up to managing stores across two states! Through all this she learned what people like to eat and now she is sharing that knowledge in this book. So many of the recipes look really good and very approachable. Thank you for the gifted copy, Simon Element! 🙌🏻 Here’s what I made: 🍤 Baked Coconut Shrimp- yowza this was so good. Each one was like a bite of seafood candy. Such a treat! 🍄🟫 Mushroom and Prosciutto Tart- this should have cheddar but the recipe didn’t say when to add it so I never did BUT it was still good without! The egg/mustard/chive/parmesan mixture on the puff pastry was delicious. 🐓 Chicken and Vegetable Shepherd’s Pie- this is a lighter take on shepherd’s pie which tastes a lot more like a #glutenfree take on chicken pot pie and that’s totally okay with me. I loved the creamy filling and the cheesy potatoes on top! 🥜 Snickers Pie- WOW this pie is everything a Snickers should be. All the classic flavors of the candy but elevated. Pure decadence.
The self-described half-Gaelic, half-garlic Morrisey defines cooking as "95 percent confidence and 5 percent the ability to read a recipe" (p. 15), and her You Got This! . . . provides recipes aplenty for the curious. I particularly appreciate her approach to many dishes where meat is the side and the main is a plant-based offering--to best meet the needs of a houseful or dinner guests of mixed dietary persuasions. The book is arranged as follows: a short introduction, a chapter called "Get Set Up for Success" covering pantry, refrigerator staples, freezer staples, kitchen tools, and a one-pager titled "What I Was Thinking When I Wrote this Book." Then the actual recipes unfold across the following scaffolding: Breakfast is My Jam, Almost Dinner (heavy hors d'oeuvres and things that could readily be dinner), Dinner Time!, Vegetables Big & Small, Bowls & Salads, Soups & Sammies, and Dessert, of Course!
First up at our house was the Sweet Potato and Black Bean Enchiladas (p. 140). On deck next is the Greek Turkey Meatball Bowls with Tomato-Cucumber Salad (p. 187). One of the things I enjoy most about her explanations is that she does not have you preheat the oven until the oven is actually needed. Four stars!
I really liked this book! So many reviews have it as a “cookbook for beginners”, but I’m an excellent cook and baker and I found the recipes fun. I’m not much on cookbooks that have me running to the store for weird ingredients. I don’t have a lot of Foodie Friends that I need to impress, just a family that loves eating good everyday cooking. I’ve made a number of recipes from this book and they’ve all turned out wonderfully! Breakfast Calzones Smoked Turkey Croissant roll-ups Blueberry Turnovers, Chicken Fajita Pinwheels Turkey Meatballs with Roasted Pepper Sauce Sheet Pan Lasagna Chicken Parmesan with Vodka Sauce Greek Turkey Meatball Bowl Firecracker Salmon Rice Bowls Ginger Pork vermicelli Bowl Boozy Irish Cream Brownies
A nice cookbook with some good recipes and all in all a lovely cookbook. Be forewarned, the author is a pescatarian so most of the recipes are either vegetarian or seafood based. There are some recipes with meat, but if that is a staple in your household, you may want to look somewhere else. My pet peeve with cookbooks is when they don't show a picture of every single recipe. I'm not asking them to devote a full page to every recipe - I know that gets expensive - but at least they can group 4, 5 or 6 recipe pictures on one page and then show that. This cookbook has a lot of pictures, but not all. After all, we eat with our eyes first, don't we?
I have long been a fan of Miss Morrisey’s Instagram page, so I was thrilled to see she released a cookbook. Before discovering her, I used to feel a little self-conscious about my old, stained (but perfectly functional!) cookware. Seeing her create such aesthetically stunning and delicious dishes with similarly well-loved items re.
It reminded me that no one cares what my pans look like, it’s the food that matters. Her recipes feel approachable, encouraging, and genuinely doable. Everything she makes seems so effortless that for the first time, I actually believe… I’ve got this!
Absolutely fantastic! I've been following Diane on Instagram for years and was so happy she wrote a cookbook. Her recipes and timeless, quick and different. There is always suggested variations on the recipes. Don't eat Vegetarian? She gives you meat pairings that go well with the dish. The desserts are to die for. Can't wait to make the Creamy Lemon Pie.
Nothing is wrong with this cookbook but most of the recipes are not appealing to my family. And to be honest, a lot of them don’t appeal to me. I also don’t want to use a ton of ingredients or time to make a meal. It does not have photos of every recipe.
What a great addition to my cookbook collection! Simple hints to help keep your kitchen organized and what to have in your pantry at all times. I've followed this chef and author so long on facebook so its great to have another book out by her.
Reminds me of an Italian-Irish American Ina Garten and I mean that in the most complimentary way. Easy & approachable food and most importantly, what I want to eat/make.
She had me at the story of her parents, reminiscent of my in-laws. The recipes are family friendly, not particularly difficult and has plenty of great photos. Pasta fazool! :)
Took pictures of one delicious looking chicken barley soup and some molasses cookies which I’m always down for. Lovely pictures in the book, just wish every recipe got a picture!
