Miyu Suzuki is a bright and bubbly high schooler who’s got a crush. There’s just one little problem—when it comes to personality, the guy she’s into is her polar opposite!
Emotions are running high as Suzuki and her friends prepare for their field trip to Kyoto, where new sights, new experiences, and a chance to see each other in a whole new light await. Whether it’s Suzuki wrestling with how she wants Tani to think of her, Nishi deciding how she really feels about Yamada, or Azuma letting her walls down, one thing’s for sure—it’ll be a trip to remember!
These volumes can be very dense reads, but dang do I ever love them. The story has neatly split into three separate couples, or at least potential ones, and each of them is a lot of fun to spend time with. That’s a rare feat.
My absolute fave is still the hopelessly shy Nishi and Suzuki and Tani’s friend, Yamada, who make such an adorable couple that they could lead this manga and I wouldn’t even mind.
Between Nishi continuing to push outside her comfort zone, Yamada’s ongoing acceptance of her exactly as she is, and Nishi’s friend being all too happy to play wingman, this is so much greatness in one package.
Their tale sprawls all across this volume, culminating in a really sweet date that inadvertently ends up intersecting with Suzuki and Tani while they’re also having a little moment of their own.
The silly ways that Tani and Suzuki manage to work even though they don’t have a lot in common is still another part of the three-pronged approach that makes this so good. They’re good for one another, yes, but they aren’t out to change one another and that’s really key.
Tani’s still the quiet one, but he’s slowly coming out of his shell and it’s very sweet seeing them keep landing blows on one another. This definitely catches the mood of a particular type of young love.
And then there’s the super-self-conscious Taira, whose glow-up didn’t really lead him to the high school life he envisioned. Except he and the jaded Azuma have such a good time together and Azuma is practically blossoming through her interactions with him.
It’s not the madcap antics of Tsuredere Children, but between the art style and the sharp writing this manages to capture the usual manga high school experience while making it feel fresh and unique. I’ve seen Nara’s deer dozens of times by now, but this still has something new to do with them.
There aren’t really high dramatics, but there don’t need to be. Every time this switches to a different perspective or couple it stays strong and keeps on going. It’s many things, but always interesting.
4.5 stars - I mean, it’s not doing anything special, per se, but what it does it does so well that it’s hard to resist. Wonderful stuff.
Continuing in the same vein, we follow Tani and Suzuki on a school trip—a staple of teen rom-coms. The relationships between the various characters evolve little by little, with the same subtle insight into teenage emotions beneath a humorous veneer. The artwork is funny, if not extraordinary, and the series remains refreshing halfway through its run
Ok SO! I really did like this volume- And here’s why!
First off- FIELD TRIP! Idk it’s just fun lol…! And NISHI X YAMADA *my heartttt 😭😭😭* I’M SO HAPPY WHEN THEY’RE TOGETHER AND THE WAY HE DID UP HIS HAIRRR The developments we got in this volume were great , and the Taira focus story was honestly so good. It’s amazing seeing the gloomy boy he used to be fade away, same for Azuma’s growth. It does a heart good! 🥺
One thing I wanted to touch on was a content warning in this book (and later in the series). So in this volume,
I FINALLY CAUGHT UP TO WHERE THE ANIME ADAPTED. MWAHHAHAHAHAHA This volume was adorable as per usual. Can’t go wrong with a field trip arc like. NISHI AND YAMADA ARE ACTUALLY WAY TOO CUTE IM GOING TO DIE OF DIABETES. Their whole date was so funny though lol. Them running as soon as they saw Suzuki and Tani LOLLLLL. Once again I am being edged by Suzuki and Tani. KISS ALREADY MY BRO LEANS!!! I can see they are so close to doing it though I mean the only reason they didn’t was cause of Suzukis parents interrupting which by the way had me cackling. Again Taira and Azuma really intrigue me. I want them together so bad. I CANNOT WAIT TO READ NEW CONTENT NOW THAT IVE CAUGHT UP😈😈😈😈 BRING IT ON
not only do I absolutely love this cast but it has a lot of things I want to do in hs but probably won’t happen 😋 I’m hoping for college I can do these with my friends cause we locked in we like that trust like idk summer before college I am EXICTED I want to do things
Taira is so me he is my twin in another universe TRUST I love the guy and his silly little smile when he isn’t stressing for 10sec (he looks like a frog ) (I am not Japanese in any way shape or form but still he’s my twin believe me)
Tani is also me too and can I say I love how he’s pretty diff from most mc ?? Most malemc are kinda like tadano (no hate to my og) but he’s different while still being quiet like this series puts bandages on my damaged knees and heals them fr
Yamada and Nishi have me locked in like guess who’s going straight to a03??? ❤️ I really like their dynamic tbh like something about them is so kyutw I will be drawing these two a lot even if my drawings are horrible
gachapo the goat
where was this series in ms and why is it only 8vol 💔💔 like please give me more 😔 atleast it was made and it has blessed my eyes I can’t complain (10 series could’ve been satisfactory tho… 🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹)
It's always a little hard to be objective about a story when you're comparing it to the anime adaptation you loved. So some of these scenes felt a bit choppy to me, whereas I'd adored them on screen. But the characters are still great.
I love their goofiness, all the different friendship dynamics, and the awkwardness of navigating first relationships.
Suzuki and Tani are making immense amounts of progress, and I really adore how much Suzuki consistently just goes for it. Yeah, she feels weird about making a big deal out of dates or being the first one to reach out for physical contact, but she does it anyway because that's a core part of her personality. And Tani's getting more and more comfortable being proactive in their relationship, too. They're just so cute together and fit so well despite their different personalities.
Yamada and Nishi, whom I absolutely adored in the anime, are struggling more, mostly because Nishi is incredibly shy and gets way too wrapped up in her own head still. That could typically be something I find kind of annoying (even though I'm more like her than Suzuki...or maybe that's why...), but it feels realistic with the two of them, with Nishi doing her best to break out of her comfort zone and show Yamada that she's interested, too.
Their date was super cute. Loved seeing Nishi finally starting to relax enough to open up more and to show Yamada some of her true personality, although this got interrupted by running into Suzuki and Tani on their own date night.
The class trip was fun, too. The guys in their faux-Snoopy hats and the aggressive deer made me laugh. I'm maybe getting a bit too far away from my high school days to really relate to some of dynamics, but it did make me feel pretty nostalgic for the few class trips I had during my teenage years. Love their teacher, too, who honestly deserves more page time. He seems like a good dude who's a nice mix of caring and lenient. He definitely would've been popular when I was in school.
I really love how the story unfolds. Watching Miyu and Yusuke slowly, like painfully slowly, progress their relationship? Delicious. The way they handle situations with their completely opposite personalities just makes everything even better. It’s not rushed, it’s not forced, it just flows.
AND NISHI WITH YAMADA??? HELLO??? SO CUTE??? Every time they appear, I swear I turn into Nishi’s friend, just internally screaming and losing my mind over them. Peak reaction. No thoughts, just kyaaaa.
Taira my boy… (okay but let’s be real, Yusuke is my cute boy, you are my cutie boy wkwkwk). But seriously, your life??? What happened to you in middle school??? I don’t know why but I have this strong feeling it was bleak. Like… emotionally damaging kind of bleak. I’m watching you very closely.
And Azuma… I’m really happy seeing her slowly becoming herself. It feels gentle and real, not some sudden personality switch.
What I really appreciate is how this story isn’t just about romance. The friendship? The warmth? The way they all bring happiness to each other? It hits. The balance between love and friendship is actually so nice, like, yes, give me both, I’m eating this up.
BUT ALSO, IMPORTANT QUESTION, WHO THE HELL IS GAPACHO???
Like actually. Who??? Why have I never seen this person??? Are they even real??? Are they just going to stay a mysterious being until the end???
Gapacho out here being the biggest enigma of the entire story for no reason ╥﹏╥
There are a couple of things that are a must in these types of manga.
1. Beach episode 2. Field trip
And this volume brings us to the field trip. And I loved every single moment. There was so much that happened and it all worked so well. This definitely had to be my favorite volume as, finally, ALL of the characters are developing.
And then the last chapter of this volume. Ugh, the torture of having to wait! I seriously love Tani and Suzuki and reading their relationship grow. Suzuki being more straightforward in exactly what she wants and Tani catching on to her.
I think I like how much Tani's character is really growing. He's being more talkative and really trusting his instincts more.
This is definitely the best and I cannot wait until we get the next volume.
4.5 stars sooo will this series have 3 couples? the english name "you and i are total opposites" would fit all three couples, i find that cute and cool this volume was a lot of fun. i love the characters so much and the progress between yamada and nishi is so cute. the field trip arc didn't feel as generic as i read in other manga, i like that the main couple needs some progress in the next volume. they are cute now too, but if they don't make some progress in the next volume, i think the romance would feel a bit stagnant
OHHHHH man the side couples this volume were SOOOOO cute!!! Taira is slowly becoming happier and happier and so is Azuma?? NO BUT seriously I'm so happy for those two ToT I loved when Taira got excited about going on the class trip. >< I adore Yamada and Nishi as well, they're so sweet and I love how Nishi's character is written- she's a very realistic shy girl and relatable at times, haha. This volume had less of Tani and Suzuki than I would've expected, but I was REALLY happy that Taira had a lot of screentime, and they gave everyone else a good amount as well. I love this series.
Everyone is gearing up for the class trip and all the couples are growing closer... in their own quirky little ways.
But the absolute best part of the whole book is Yamada and Nishi's date. It's so cute and then the next chapter reveals that Suzuki and Tani also had a date at the same time in the same place and BOTH parties were trying to ninja avoid the other. It's equal parts sweet and hilarious.
Officially done with what was in the anime! I’m excited for what’s to come! Maybe I’ll actually get through it before season 2….
I just need to point out that personality-wise I’m extremely Tani-like, and I love Suzuki, but my type is so Yamada-like. Golden retriever energy dude. I’m so glad Nishi is starting to let go. I’m also really curious about Azuma and Taira in the coming volumes, because I’m sure they’ll be a bigger thing in the second half.
Their friend group is so cute and wholesome. They all have different personalities but at the same time, they're all the same. Yamada and Suzuki makes the group lively and infects everyone with their liveliness.
I am waiting for NishiDa ship to sail. It is sailing but I'm waiting for their relationship to really push through <3
Time for a school field trip! Less focus on our main couple, I feel, as we got more of the various (potential) side couples! My favourite chapter was the one where one couple was on a date and tried to avoid the other couple on their date, watching them be so embarrassed was cute.
Loved it 1 fer sure couple,1 budding couple, and 1 potential. I love the art. I really like that the overly shy character has such a supportive female friend to push her along. I love the strong friend group and kindness
This field trip was so cute! Like very iconic actually! My faves are progressing nicely. I will say I need Nishi to find some chill like omg hahaha I be needing her brain to chill out. Yamada is fun, but worth all of this anxiety? Idc sis!
Super fun! I liked the Taira and Azuma parts, and the dates were really really cute, especially then freaking out about other people seeing them. I'm glad Taira gets to have some fun. The little bonus bits are good too!
