Defender of the cosmos! Vanquisher of evil! Failure at frisbee??
Corgi shenanigans, epic space battles, and intergalactic heroes abound in this uplifting, action-packed adventure about the powerful connection between humans and their pets from GLAAD Media Award nominee Ben Kahn (Renegade Rule, Elle Campbell Wins Their Weekend) and illustrator Georgeo Brooks (Immortals Fenyx Rising: From Great Beginnings).
Eleven-year-old Reuben Mahmud just wants a break. When he takes his pet corgi, Mr. Muffins, to the park, he expects to get just that—a break. But what he gets instead is an alien invasion right smack dab in the middle of his neighborhood! Oh! And apparently Mr. Muffins is the chosen one destined to save the galaxy? This should be interesting . . .
Dragged into the middle of an epic space war, Reuben learns that the fate of the entire galaxy rests in Mr. Muffins’s adorable corgi paws. It’s going to take a lot more than tail wagging and butt waddling to end this war. To turn the tide of the conflict, intergalactic soldier Cassara must show Mr. Muffins how to tap into his cosmic power and be the hero the galaxy needs him to be. But when Mr. Muffins is separated from Reuben and a formidable giant mech-corgi arrives to yconquer the world, Mr. Muffins’s powers are put to the test. Will Reuben be able to rise to the occasion to help his fluffy best friend? Do Cassara, Reuben, and Mr. Muffins have what it takes to end this war once and for all?
One of those books where you will root even for the villians!
This is one such graphic novel filled with action and adventure with aliens, a young boy and his dog! And our corgi has a very important role in the plot and I am going to recommend this graphic novel for this super corgi named Mr. Muffins! The name 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Our boy Reuben Mahmud cannot wait to grow up and is fed up of everyday boy responsibilities he has to deal with. But somehow he gets kidnapped by one unexpected being from another universe and yes the story starts!
Read this for the fight to save the galaxy and of course you will be happier by the end of it!
SO CUTE and funny. This is like Avatar the Last Airbender meets Steven Universe... but with a cute dog! Can't beat that. Kahn's humor and wit continue to be top tier. 5/5 stars.
I received this book from Netgalley/the publisher in exchange of an honest review.
A corgi? Space? Magic superpowers? Lots of action and fun? I just had to read this graphic novel and I can tell you that it was SO GOOD!
😍 That cover! I just love seeing all the chaos happening, the action, and then a boy and his corgi just having a fun time unaware of their big roles soon. 😍 Corgi! Aka Mr. Muffins. A dog who isn’t that good at frisbee, but turns out to be the Defender of the Stars. Aka, the most important being in a space war! He has to discover and develop his powers and help save the world. I loved the dog and I also loved that he was super loyal to Reuben. If Reuben wasn’t around? Well, Mr. Muffins wasn’t having it! Oh no. He clearly showed that anyone coming between him and his friend/owner… well would have hell to pay. Which made me laugh because he is normally such a chill dog. 😍 I loved how in the end battle Reuben and Mr Muffins work together and Reuben does some, for him, scary things to make sure that Mr Muffins is OK and that he can win this. 😍 Reuben was such a fun character and I love his determination and how enthusiastic he was about well… everything. OK, excerpt homework, but that is logical. Haha. No one loves homework. 😍 Then there is Cassara, the alien who is trying to save her world, or at least defeat the baddies. At first she wasn’t the best to be liked, I mean she wanted to just steal Mr. Muffins, which is just not cool OK. But as the story continued I started to really like Cassara and root for her. She is a kick-ass pilot and I just love how nothing stops them. 😍 The aliens of the bad team who stayed on Earth and seeing what they got up to. 😍 The battles between the aliens were so cool, though also heartbreaking because things weren’t going so well in the final battle. 😍 The art was just so much fun! Not just seeing a corgi fly through the sky with a rainbow behind them, but also Reubens expressions. The guy has some fantastic ones and I love how expressive he was. From ecstatic to sad to determined. 😍 I loved getting an epilogue and see what is next after the big battle.
🤔 I just wasn’t a fan of the baddies and then especially when we learn that they got a hack. I didn’t like that at all.
All in all, I flew through this book and just had so much fun reading it! Mr Muffins for the win! I would recommend this one to all.
This is not a new idea. The theme is "You are afraid, but it's okay and you need to keep fighting." and "Friends stay together when the chips are down." The art is cute, clever and fun, but even that isn't new. I mean, we know aliens and people and planets and spaceships. We know all of this. Seen all of this before. So what makes it a four rating? It is just g-d fun! And there are great puns and jokes and energy. (Corgi: "It's Earth for "His legs are super tiny, and his BUTT waddles when he walks!") Things mesh well. It takes a familiar setting/theme/idea and makes it modern while keeping the classic message. Granted, I was not always a fan of our main human, but I like how things progressed and the modern elements will grab kids today. While most ages (strong 8 to younger 13) can read, some things might not be great for a most sensitive reader. Broken down into chapters, this allows for a read aloud to a graphic novel.
This is a great graphic novel! I had a lot of fun reading it and I can imagine this being a big hit with children. It has great humor which reminds me of cartoons I watched as a child (like Fairy Odd Parents etc). The humor is genuinely funny and made me smile and laugh.
The art is also fantastic. I really like this style. I'm definitely keeping an eye out of this will get sequels.
Thank you Netgalley for allowing me to read an ARC of this amazing graphic novel!
Eleven year old Reuben doesn’t want to do his homework so he goes to the park with his corgi named Mr muffins when suddenly a alien crashed down to earth and claims Mr muffins is the champion of light, the only hope to win the space war.
This was such an amazing time! The humor made me laugh multiple times and i think you could enjoy this at any age, it was very childhood nostalgia vibes. The artwork is straight up my alley, cute colors, funny character expression/poses and interesting looking fantastical creatures! Everything you could want in a cute sci-fi graphic novel <3
Can’t get over how much fun i had while reading this! Definitely recommend and will be buying myself a physical copy so i can re read it and lend it out to friends!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an e copy!
A quirky cast of characters takes on an evil alien species in this ridiculous romp featuring an adorable dog with super powers, a kid who really wants to avoid his homework, and an awesome alien lieutenant out to save the day! 👽 🌈 🐶
An engaging adventure full of fun and wit, Mr. Muffins is perfect for lovers of animals, space aliens, and epic battles. The unique character designs and their expressions are especially charming. And a super adorable super dog is always a plus!
I received an advanced copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. While he didn’t do homework, eleven-year-old Reuben and his dog (a corgi), Mr. Muffins, are playing at the local park. Until space aliens arrive and proclaim that the corgi is the new chosen one to save the galaxy from evil. Reuben and Mr. Muffins venture into space alongside their new alien friend, Cassara, a rogue soldier who believes in the dog’s new powers. Can Mr. Muffins save the day despite wanting more pets and cuddles? It is a short and fun read about one special corgi destined to save the universe: the fight scenes in space were epic, especially the evil corgi machine. I laughed every time that older man, who was reading the newspaper, always mentioned how incredible movie sets were getting these days. Mr. Muffins is an adorable corgi and is always ready to help someone if given a few treats or snuggles.
I got to check out Mr. Muffins: Defender of the Stars. It’s a cute and fun book, that I recommend for your kids!
Reuben Mahmoud is living a normal, human kid life when suddenly an alien ship crashes. Out steps Lt. Cassara of the Voltarian Alliance with an important mission that only Reuben’s corgi Mr. Muffins can help with!
Thank you Netgalley and Obi Press for sending this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.
This was a fun book.
If you’ve got young kids, you should 100% get this book. It was a lot of fun.
How could you not love a book about a corgi superhero?
Let me tell you something. When Mr. Muffins got powers and started flying through space, I wanted to hoot and holler. Who doesn’t love a flying corgi?
Then, Mr. Muffins started shooting rainbows out of his mouth. I was sold.
Graphic Novel I received an electronic ARC from Oni Press through NetGalley. Nonstop action as Mr. Muffins and Reuben meet Cassara and join the fight to save an intergalactic alliance from the Hakar Emperor. Readers see them battle on Earth and then head for another planet to protect citizens from the Hakar invasion. As expected, good wins out in the end but not without a lot of challenges along the way. Humor weaves through the action to keep the story on the lighter side. I appreciate the way the enemy Hakars stranded on Earth integrate and are accepted. Rather amusing to see one run for mayor. The artwork is highly detailed and well worth studying as the book unfolds.
I loved this book so much! This is yet another installment of the Comix Kids subscription that hit it out of the park. The main character, Reuben, has a corgi that he loves, Mr. Muffins, who does not appear to be the brightest, really does not want to do his homework. While procrastinating at the park with Mr. Muffins, an alien light spirit chooses the adorable corgi as its host and launches Reuben and Mr. Muffins into a battle to save the universe, which also happens to get him out of doing his homework. This was such a fun, heartwarming read!
Mr. Muffins: Defender of the Stars is an absolutely delightful graphic novel about a corgi, a space war, and the exceptional bond between a pet and their human. This was SO much fun, and I loved illustrations. Everything was bright and colorful, and the plot was full of fun space battles. It was definitely a little light on heavy plot, but perfect for the youngsters.
Thanks to NetGalley, Ben Kahn, and Oni Press for the chance to read and review. My opinions are my own!
Hilarity and plenty of adventure ensue when a corgi is accidentally imbued with the power to save the planet/galaxy from space invaders. Middle-grade readers should love this action packed graphic, while older readers will chuckle at the humor. And, EVERYONE will be awed by the spectacular artwork by Georgeo Brooks. This is a surefire winner!
Many thanks to Oni Press and NetGalley for the preview.
Super cute story about a kid and his dog, one day the dog is blessed by a being of light from space. Aliens come looking for the dog and even try and kidnap him. Though they underestimate the love between a dog and its owner, as the kid is about to be killed the dog jumps into action showing its newfound powers. They go on an adventure to save a world they didn't even know excited.
The corgi was cute but this book was pretty weird. Although it was kinda admittedly funny that Reuben was so desperate avoiding his homework that he would go to space with a random alien just to get out of it. It was also funny that he texted his mom about it too and we never see her response. The name Mr. Muffins sounds more like a stuffed animal name than a dog name though.
a corgi saves the universe, because why not? colorful, fun, with a lot of humor and some interesting world-building that makes a coherent graphic novel and it could be a standalone without the need for further books to explain anything.
This was a fun graphic novel. A lovely exploration about the relationship between a dog and their human. Loved the exploration of space and the dog superhero. The illustration style is really well done with loads to look at and adding to the story.
Adorable and kinda dumb, as is perfectly reflected in the Corgi as a species. Feels like a book that fans of Dogman would really enjoy. Love mom's hijab and Reuban's sassy attitude. The art is excellent, too.
can't go wrong with corgis, especially corgis with super powers. the bad guys were a bit weird, but their unpredictability made them kinda fun in a wacky way (theatrical, diva alien was my personal fave). hope there will be more!
Again, I'm not a dog person but I did appreciate the bond between Reuben and Mr. Muffins. I think the story was exciting but the pacing felt a little haphazard/jumpy at times. I love the aliens that end up "blending in" on Earth. That was a really humorous bit.
What a great middle grade graphic novel!! The alien storyline is very welcomed in a sea of so many contemporary and realistic graphic novels. Readers will totally cheer for Mr. Muffins!
I received an ARC of this book through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
The premise of this book is absolutely brilliant. I just can't even fathom how this story came to be. I loved every single second of it, and I can promise you that kids will, too. This one is going to be a read aloud in my house as soon as it comes out!
