None of the Answers: Racing Through Life in Reverse

Rate this book
You’re invited to take a wild ride in life with tenacity, risk, danger, and near death—yielding lessons, rewards and mantras—Buckle Up!

None of the Answers is a revealing memoir by successful American entrepreneur Jeff Swaney. Written in the lost art of Gonzo journalism, the stories chronicle a life lived outside the box.

Follow Swaney from the start of his life, born dirt poor in Detroit, Michigan—facing the challenges of a city collapsed around him to fast forward reflections of a life well lived. Death-defying outdoor stunts, collegiate misadventures, penniless far-flung world travel, and birthing illegal night clubs would eventually lead to Swaney becoming a business leader in the city he loves most—Dallas, Texas. He would go on a life-altering journey, becoming a single father to two young children at age sixty. Moving from rags to riches and financial collapse to astounding recovery, Swaney brings an inspired world view.

This rich, textured page-turner launches the reader into memory lane, inspiring a search for our own best selves through reflection and questioning beliefs. It explores how we take the chaos of living full out, thriving with patience, perseverance, and purpose. The search for answers with pants pulled down self-deprecation provides an avenue for the reader’s innocuous introspection, hair pulling, and deep belly laughs.

Highly entertaining, None of the Answers recounts terrifying experiences on mountain summits, illegal all-night parties, and unspeakably difficult family tragedy, validating that we are all a little crazy navigating this world gone mad.

It’s a tell-all. Fasten your seatbelts!

Jeff Swaney's "None of the Answers" is a fascinating, if somewhat perplexing, experiment in anti-solutionism. The book, or perhaps more accurately, the non-book, deliberately avoids providing any concrete answers to the questions it raises. Instead, it revels in the ambiguity and complexity of the human experience, presenting a series of vignettes, thought experiments, and philosophical musings that ultimately lead to... well, nothing.

Here's a breakdown of what makes this work so unique:

1. Intentional Ambiguity: Swaney meticulously crafts scenarios and dialogues that are rich in evocative language but devoid of definitive conclusions. He seems to be less interested in providing answers and more in fostering a sense of intellectual unease in the reader.
2. A Celebration of Uncertainty: In a world obsessed with certainty, "None of the Answers" dares to embrace the unknown. It challenges the reader to confront their own discomfort with ambiguity and to find value in the questions themselves.
3. A Mirror to the Reader: The lack of concrete answers forces the reader to engage actively with the text, projecting their own interpretations and experiences onto the narrative. In this sense, the book becomes a mirror, reflecting the reader's own inner world.
4. A Critique of Solution-Oriented Thinking: Swaney subtly critiques the tendency to oversimplify complex issues and to seek easy answers. He suggests that some questions are inherently unanswerable, and that the pursuit of certainty can be a futile, even destructive, endeavor.
5. Stylistic Innovation: The book's unconventional structure and fragmented narrative contribute to its overall sense of disorientation. This stylistic choice reinforces the central theme of uncertainty, creating a reading experience that is both challenging and thought-provoking.

However, "None of the Answers" is not without its drawbacks. Some readers may find its lack of resolution frustrating or even infuriating. The absence of a clear narrative arc or thematic throughline can make it difficult to grasp Swaney's overall message. Additionally, the book's abstract and philosophical nature may not appeal to those seeking a more straightforward or entertaining read.

In conclusion, Jeff Swaney's "None of the Answers" is a bold and unconventional work that challenges the very notion of what a book should be. It is not for everyone, but for those willing to embrace the unknown, it offers a unique and thought-provoking exploration of the human condition. It is less about providing answers, and more about provoking questions, and in that regard it is very successful.

A rollicking tale of adventures and personal growth. Swaney helped other people grow, and helped revitalize Deep Ellum through the ground breaking Club Clearview. It is an insightful and loving look at people and experiences that we can all learn from.

In None of the Answers, Jeff Swaney has shown the world how to live a life. Reaching a period of uncertainty after graduating from college, Jeff made an amazingly brave decision to put on a backpack and with very few funds travel the world for over a year. Sleeping in filthy youth hostels and under trees or on park benches he was able to see much more of the world in that year then most people would visit in a lifetime. This is the equivalent of a PHD in how to get through difficult circumstances, experience other cultures and define your future.

During his travels he came upon a large group of men watching the TV show Dallas. He was asked to sit with the group and they inquired if he liked the show. I believe a seed was planted in his mind and when it came time to begin a career, Jeff chose Dallas. Little did he know at the time how fortunate he was to have made that decision as the city was booming and the chances for success in almost any industry were extraordinarily positive.

Upon his arrival in Dallas Jeff tells the story of how he established an underground nightclub in an area called Deep Ellum. This neighborhood, east of downtown, had become famous in the 1920s and 30s for being the heart of the blues in America along with New Orleans, Kansas City and Chicago. Over the years it had deteriorated to becoming nothing but welders, pawn shops and dilapidated buildings. Everything shut down by 5 o’clock as did downtown Dallas and everyone went north to the suburbs. Jeff soon legitimized his club and so began the revitalization of the area. Today on any given night there might be ten thousand people floating through the streets visiting all the restaurants, nightclubs and entertainment venues. Downtown Dallas has grabbed on it’s coattails and is it’s most vibrant since the 60s.

Let Jeff carry you through his journey and discover the secrets to his success as a nightclub impresario, real estate broker and Bon Vivant. I believe he sells himself short with his title. He should have called it Lots of the Answers.

Some books ease you in and gently introduce you to their world. None of the Answers is not one of those books. This book captures your attention from page one, grabs you, and brings you along in the tuck-and-roll adventures of an intrepid dreamer, courageous, and at times, a possibly amygdala-impaired guy living life on the edge of the edge.

Barry Annino, my late husband, dubbed Swaney El Sueño,the Dreamer—a term of endearment earned through bold dreams and gut-driven gambles. This book is a full-throttle, tuck-and-roll account of those dreams, charting a life lived on instinct, what I believe was, at times, divine intervention and sheer audacity. You don’t read this book; you experience it. You chuckle along and gasp at his crazy escapades and at his near-misses and the moments that prove, again and again, that something bigger—call it fate, luck, or a higher power—has been keeping an eye on him.

I cracked this book open on a flight from Dallas to LA, thinking I’d casually thumb through a few pages. By the time I touched down, I was in too deep. By the return flight, I was done. It’s relentless, just like Jeff himself—fast-paced, chaotic, impossible to put down. And when you finally turn the last page, you’re left with more than just experiencing a wild, sometimes unbelievable story. You’re left questioning: Where are you investing your time, your energy, and your heart? Because if None of the Answers teaches you anything, at the end of the day or in your fourth quarter of life, investing your time, resources, and heart into others is what matters most.

Jeff Swaney’s memoir is an exquisite read. It is an experience that left me both moved and inspired. With every page, it becomes clear that this is not just a story—it’s a window into a soul who has lived, struggled, and triumphed in ways that resonate deeply with anyone who reads it.

From the very first chapter, Jeff captivates us with his authenticity and raw vulnerability. Whether recounting personal challenges or moments of joy, the narrative is woven with such honesty and grace that it feels as though we’re walking alongside him through each chapter of his life. The courage to share such intimate details, paired with a genuine sense of hope and resilience, is nothing short of inspiring.

What struck me most is the way he turns even the hardest moments into reflections of growth and understanding. Each story serves as a testament to his strength of character. Not just in overcoming adversity, but in embracing life with an open heart. The humor, the pain, the joy—it’s all there, wrapped in beautifully crafted prose that feels like a conversation with an old friend. It is more than just a memoir—it’s a celebration of the human spirit, a reminder that we are all capable of growth, healing, and change. This memoir is a powerful reminder of what it means to be truly alive and to live with intention and authenticity.

I wholeheartedly recommend this memoir to anyone seeking inspiration, empathy, and a deeper connection to the stories that shaped us as Deep Ellum Alumni.

My review of Jeff Swaney’s None of the Answers.

Funny, engaging, thoughtful and introspective, personal, oozing with a magical blend of humility and hubris, Mr Swaney’s autobiographical journey is wildly entertaining and at times profoundly heartbreaking.

As a Detroit native, MSU graduate and very short term Dallas resident during the crazy post college days in the height of the 80’s insanity, I felt I was on a parallel journey with my old friend. He perfectly captured so many moments I felt l could have written myself. Fortunately Jeff had the discipline, memory, and colorful vocabulary to put it all down into his wonderfully relatable and articulate prose.
Though we both suffered unimaginable tragedies, experienced dysfunctional family members, and somehow managed to harness much good luck I see Jeff as an inspiration to many who harbor fears of going forward full speed. His genuine compassion and respect for diverse members of our shared human race served him admirably over the years and brought him much favor and positive karma.

I simply love he seems now to have settled into a peaceful coexistence doing his best to be a great dad and remain a loyal friend to so many. I believe his innate optimism and love of life and all the beauty it has to offer will sustain him long into the future. I look forward to his next reflection as to how the second half of his life reveals itself.
I am happy to call Jeff Swaney a friend.

A Masterclass in Leadership and Grit – Jeff Swaney Delivers

Jeff Swaney’s book is a rare blend of raw entrepreneurial insight and grounded wisdom that feels both inspiring and deeply personal. From the first chapter, it’s clear you’re hearing from someone who’s been in the trenches—not theorizing from the sidelines, but building, failing, adapting, and winning in real time.

What sets Swaney apart isn’t just his business acumen (which is formidable), but his ability to reflect on the journey with humility and clarity. He doesn’t sugarcoat the challenges, nor does he overinflate the victories. Instead, he shares lessons learned with candor and context, giving readers something far more valuable than textbook advice: real-world perspective.

Whether you’re a first-time founder or a seasoned executive, there’s something here for you. Swaney tackles growth, resilience, team building, and decision-making with a no-nonsense style that feels refreshingly honest. His stories illustrate not only what worked, but why it worked—and just as importantly, what didn’t.

If you’re looking for a book that combines actionable strategy with the kind of hard-earned wisdom you can only get through experience, this is it. Jeff Swaney doesn’t just tell you how to build something meaningful—he shows you what it takes to become the kind of leader who can.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars — “A Backwards Trip That Somehow Moves You Forward”

I’ve known Jeff Swaney for 40 years and if I had a dollar for every time somebody said “you should write a book” after regaling one of his biographical tales, I would be retired by now. And now he did. I'm not retired but Jeff Swaney’s None of the Answers: Racing Through Life in Reverse is the literary equivalent of trying to put pants on over your head—and somehow succeeding, looking fabulous, and learning the meaning of life in the process.

Swaney takes the absurdities of life, the detours, the U-turns, and the potholes and turns them into a roadmap of self-reflection. He doesn't hand you directions (hence the title), he hands you a kaleidoscope and says "look through this" - offering one gloriously offbeat, delightfully human, and sneakily profound perspective after another. It’s as if he took the rulebook of conventional wisdom, set it on fire, and then used the ashes to write a love letter to everyone who’s ever felt like they’re doing life a little out of order.

You’ll laugh. You’ll reflect. You’ll realize where there is a will, there is a way.

But most of all, you’ll find yourself nodding along, thinking, “Yeah, maybe going backwards is the way forward.”

Highly recommended for anyone tired of life’s treadmill and ready to moonwalk their way into meaning.

Since I cared for Jeff’s kids, I had an up-close view of his resilience, warmth, and values in action. That perspective made reading about his near-death escapades, rebellious nightlife ventures, and artistic creation feel deeply personal. What he describes on the page resonated fully with my real world experiences of him as a parent and friend.

This book is full of unforgettable memories and woven through it all are reflective themes of patience, perseverance, purpose, and trusting one’s gut, all delivered with humility and occasional self‑deprecating humor. (My favorite form of humor.)

Endorsements from names like Mark Cuban and other notable voices reinforce not only the entertainment value but also the memoir’s deeper messages about vision, collaboration, and living boldly.

For anyone needing a reminder that life isn’t a straight line but a wild ride worth riding, None of the Answers is a page-turning memoir. It made me reflect and laugh, and appreciate even more the parent I once worked for.

Highly recommended to anyone looking for an inspiring, candid, and unforgettable reading experience.

A Wild, Honest Ride Through a Fearless Life.

Jeff Swaney takes you through decades of music, nightlife, and risk-taking with the kind of restless energy you can’t fake. Deep Ellum and Clearview are here, vivid and unforgettable, but they’re just part of a much bigger journey.

I moved to Dallas in ’93 and fell in with a crew of hardcore Clearview regulars. They used to talk about the early days like a badge of honor: “There was nothing in Deep Ellum back then, just a few punks on the street and Clearview, before it even had a floor. Just dirt on the ground.” The girls wore leather, the guys had long hair and tattoos, it was a sanctuary for misfits while the tourists wandered the West End and the yuppies packed into Greenville Avenue. That place had a pull. It shaped people. Myself included.

After 30 years in Dallas and countless nights at Clearview, it was surreal to see it all come back to life in these pages. What makes the book stick, though, is the energy, rare, unfiltered, and honest... that runs through every chapter, no matter the setting.

An avid reader since childhood, I’ve read many great books, but this is the first book that spoke to me; called me out; and forced me to ask myself some tough questions.

“None of the Answers” offers a kaleidoscopic view of the author’s exploits, explorations, and trials and tribulations throughout his dogged life; as he wittingly and, oft times, unwittingly emerges having more questions than answers.

The author reveals himself to his audience in a way that few authors dare—“letting it all hang out”—making this a book that’s hard to put down.

Regardless of your stage or station in life, “None of the Answers” will rock your world with its inspired wisdom, poignant humor and, yes, raw humanity. You’ll laugh… you’ll cry… you’ll gasp… you’ll cringe… and, in the end, you’ll applaud the author’s tenacity to endure.

Buy it. Read it. Ride along with the author “Racing Through Life in Reverse.”

Swaney has truly delivered an incredible experience with this captivating journey. Right from the first chapter, I found myself utterly engrossed, finding it hard to put the book down. The diverse array of stories, reflecting both the peaks and valleys of life, made me pause and think about my own journey. While I could share some of the tales that resonated with me the most, I’d rather not spoil the surprise. What I can confidently say is that the writing is vibrant, flows beautifully, and maintains its appeal from start to finish. The narrative builds intensity, leading to an ending that may very well offer you some deep reflections. Grab a copy and jump in; I promise, you won’t be disappointed!

Jeff Swaney has likely had scores of people tell him over the decades, "You should write a book!" Well, he just did and it's truly fantastic!

I read the highly engaging early chapters of this book and expected that once past the nightclub era, I had gotten through the entertaining parts. Don't make that mistake! Regardless of the subject, "None of the Answers" keeps right on delivering.

His book is exactly as he is: Compassionate, intelligent, fearless, and packed with positivity. It's almost a philosophy book, (and that's meant as a high compliment).

Jeff is a great writer with a breadth of experience and wisdom that spills colors into every chapter, every story.

Impressive book. Impressive life.

Wow. None of the answers but so many. I was blessed to live during this time and what memories it brings. Innocent and free. Wild and adventurous. Young but old (enough). Memories baked in our brains not just of what was once but what is now and what life can become. Living life and imagining what the future can be. We all have a past, a present and a future. And we have the ability to paint that canvas. The main question is this. What can we do today and what impact can we make? That is what these written words made me think. And my answer is, live life to its fullest. And don’t wait till tomorrow as tomorrow is not guaranteed.

Reading Racing Through Life In Reverse was ridiculously engrossing, with a narrative that somehow managed to balance insight and inspiration. Jeff’s determination was like a defibrillator, shocking me into introspection and self reflection. His personal story, which was somehow intertwined with a pivotal moment in history really drove home the point that life experiences can be pretty profound. This book is basically a testament to a human spirit’s ability to bounce back and grow, offering a reading experience that’s uplifting and weirdly enjoyable! I highly recommend this book, it’s a must read!

They say there is a book in all of us. Hardly anyone finds the words and does the work to bring it to life. Jeff Swaney gets the job done in grand fashion in “None of the Answers”.

The book is remarkable on many levels. Yes, the stories and adventures have something for everyone. Beyond that, the raw and transparent view into our shared humanity is touching. This is THE most fun and fascinating memoir you’ll ever pick up and you won’t be able to put it down. Clearly Mr Swaney has a lot more living to do and that’s going to be just as interesting. Hopefully another book is on the way. Having been a friend and volunteer in his Deep Elum days, I’ve been looking forward to Jeff’s accounting of those years. He captures them in living color here and takes you right to the scene with all its gore and glory. You can’t make this kind of stuff up!
Thanks for taking the time to share your story, Jeff!

This book is full of surprises and fresh perspective. The book takes you through a life that shows perseverance, determination, fortitude, grit, and a whole lot of risk taking, which led to an impressive transformation of parts of Dallas and the Dallas culture back in the day--- truly a huge accomplishment. But the author also reveals as you read on that he is candid and vulnerable, and a continuing self-evaluator, always striving to be the best person he can be. He shows that above all, through some very torrid times, his children come first. This book is a read that shows a fearless story teller who will catapult you from zero to 60 through a life well lived.

Not normally a book I would select but was recommended by a friend. The author does a great job keeping your interest as he goes through different stages of his life and details the ups and downs he experienced. It is a good reminder that no matter what happens, you have a major role in impacting the outcome. Ultimately Jeff discovers how being a Father changed his outlook and focus. Sometimes it takes awhile. I appreciated his honesty in sharing the difficult times as well as the good.
