As the demonic activity increases, so does the tension between Sunny and the Church of Providence. One of them who can see manna senses that Sunny isn’t entirely human. But Sunny thinks he is and their paranoia is grating on his nerves. Has he been given sanctuary or has he been imprisoned? When Ezra foolishly gives into Sunny’s demand for a night out, matters get out of hand.
The drama, action and stakes are higher, especially when the High Church shows its face again. They’re not happy with the Church of Providence in general and their preferential treatment of Sunny in particular. With having to defend themselves on both fronts—against the High Church and the increasing incursion of demons—the Church of Providence is sore beset.
However, they remain a cohesive unit. There is no division about protecting Sunny, even when it becomes painfully clear that the demons targeting him are willing to cut a bloody swath through anybody to get him. Their persistence is baffling, although the reader gets more clues as to why the demons want Sunny so badly.
The ending to this installment is both horrifying answer and a tantalizing cliffhanger. As for the slow-burn romance this reader was hoping for—well, that’s more suggested by the cover than borne out by the contents. The closest they come to holding each other is in the hospital, which is hardly the scene for romance.
So this installment in the Covenant series is a mixed bag for me. However, I’m still interested in seeing what happens next.
