The complete tale of Shakara is now collected in one volume.
Shakara is the most feared entity in the universe, an unstoppable killing machine determined to bring vengeance upon those who annihilated his entire species – and nothing in the whole of the known universe will be able to stop it! A visually outrageous and impossibly epic tale of shocking violence and destruction!
Written by Robbie Morrison (The Authority, Nikolai Dante) and featuring the incredible art of Henry Flint (Zombo, Judge Dredd), Shakara is a modern 2000 AD saga!
Cursed by an old alchemist to live forever - unless struck from a weapon made of gold - Adam Eterno has gained the power to travel through the ages, fighting evil and injustice.
Now Adam has been transported into a dystopian future where a cruel police regime led by Grunn the Grim, rule over the population with an iron fist...
Written by Edward George Cowan (Robot Archie) and Chris Lowder (Dan Dare), with stunning art by Solano Lopez (Janus Stark), this book features Adam's first adventures published in Lion.
Grim, dark and violent sci-fi. I like the art style, but the combination of heavy monochrome and frenetic action can make it difficult to see what's going on. Story is a revenge quest, fairly straightforward, not bad, but there weren't many unexpected twists or turns.
That said it's got really creative character designs and experiments well with the sci-fi setting. I think that's Shakara's main strength and I enjoyed it so ... 5 stars.
Despite being a Brit and reading comics regularly for over 10 years now I'm ashamed to say I've not read a great deal of 2000ad. I'm not sure how I came across this book as I'm neither familiar with the author or artist but I'm glad I did because I had an absolute blast!
This book is pure sci fi escapism at it's finest. lots of action, lots of lore on various alien races and above all else a great sense of heart that can be oddly touching at times amongst all the blood and guts.
Fantastic writing from Morrison complimented perfectly by Flint's sketchy and edgy pencils. I also really enjoyed the black and white colour scheme with occasional bright colours here and there to emphasise little details reflecting the morality of the story.
Overall this was great and it has turned me from a casual 2000ad fan into someone who wants to do a deep dive into everything I've missed.
Recent Reads: Shakara - The Complete Collection. Robbie Morrison and Henry Flint's space opera revenge saga quickly transcends its basic structure to explore not just vengeance, but guilt, and trauma, and finally, peace. A complex graphic novel, one that can be read more than once to feel its heart.
