Shadows of the Keeper

Rate this book
Hidden in shadows, he protects her from ancient assassins . . . and himself.

Present Day -- Secure the sale of Castle MacLarrin. Heal your heart in the Highlands. Pfff! Emily knows better. What her boss really wants is to appease guilt over his butthead son having married another. Well, fine. He's paid for her ticket, the least she can do is find this castle. Then, swear off love forever, and enjoy Inverness. And stick to what she knows: coffee, historical romance books--where the men don't bail--and solitude.

Alba 1210 A.D. -- Thirty-six hundred years is a long time to suffer the punishment of immortality--even longer for Broc MacLarrin to endure memories of the exiled princess whose uncanny powers could have saved them all. And now, a nearly dead modern has been brought through the 'door' . . . this Emily none other than the bane of his existence--for, if she's returned, so too will those who killed her before--the Lumynari.

City of Balkore, Leagues below Castle MacLarrin -- Three life-cycles, he's loved her--and tenderly carried her soul to his father, Hades. Prince Dezenial of the Lumynari vows there won't be a fourth time. Remaining in shadows, he keeps her safe from his mother, the vile goddess Shadow--and his heart. But now, Emily's in the keeping of the Forest Lords, the fools no match against what hunts her . . .

I didn't realize this was more of a fantasy book than a normal human romance time travel. The characters were interesting and diverse.

I won a free autographed copy of this book from Goodreads in exchange for an honest review. Right away I delete a star for poor editing and poor spell-checking. I HATE when authors use “had had” or any other repetitive words. If you delete the word from the sentence and it means the same thing, delete the extra words. This includes using “she’d had”. Sentences that start or end with “and”, “or”, and “but” are other grammar no-no’s unless it’s a character speaking then anything goes.

I took off another star for character development. I like sassy females but when they punch, slap, or hit the males at multiple times, it’s abusive. The story kept me riveted though. I wouldn’t mind reading more work from this author with better editing, grammar, and better character.

It’s addicting even with it’s faults.

A few typos

Grammar nazis will find them, but it’s still hooking. I couldn’t put it down without thinking about it for hours after!

Started out hard to read but improved

I found it complex and complicated, trying to work out past vs present, and whose POV I was reading from...but it was worth persevering with.

Intriguing ! KB kept me hooked on this story with her many surprises!

I received this novel as a giveaway and am so happy that I had the opportunity to read it. I hope there will be more! While the beginning was hard to understand, the characters demanded that I continue! Didn't take but a couple chapters before I couldn't put it down. Emily is an argumentative, kick-ass woman, a "bitch" in the real world. And the men determined to dominate her are, shall we say, delicious! KB's narrative of both place and emotion are spot on, never bogging down and always moving the spirit.

FartherI love this book

When I first started to read this book, I didn't understand what was going on. Then, as I got further along in the story, I couldn't put it down. When I finished the book, there were still some things that were not totally clear to me, so I turned to the beginning to check out a few things and found that I couldn't put it down AGAIN! The characters seem complicated at first, but all becomes clear as the story progresses. I don't doubt that I will be reading this one again in the future.

I really loved this book. The characters were interesting and the plot was always surprising with its twists and turns. It was a little confusing with the strange names and the voices in Emily's head. It would have been nice to have a cast of characters in the back of the book to help the reader sort everyone out.
Once I got into the book, it was really great. I am not passing this one to my sister because I intend to read it again.
I received this book free through the Goodreads First Read program. Thank you to the publisher and Karey Brown for the signed copy.

Loved the story! Any book that makes me cry gets an automatic 5 stars. Too bad the editing was so bad. I lost count of the number of typos or misspelled words. Often, sentences were incomplete or missing words. Little to no transitions made it hard to follow at times. BUT, this story was so fun! I hope to see more by this writer. Hopefully she can put together a team that will help with the editing.

Love this book! It's a little confusing at the beginning as there's a lot of characters but as you get deeper into it, it just gets better and better with twist and turns that caught me by surprise! I'm so amazed with Karey's imagination! I love Emily, she's a strong female character with spunk and the dialogue has me lol at times! Can't wait for the next book!

I really enjoyed reading this book. It was a bit difficult to follow in the beginning with all the mythology and backstory, but in the end very interesting story with lots of plot twists and suspense. Satisfying ending, however I am hoping for a second book to finish where this one left off.
