I have never seen a manga that wholeheartedly abandoned its main characters for multiple volumes to focus on another couple the way this one has. That it has paid off so well is a minor miracle. If the last volume dragged, this one delivers comedy and payoff in rapid succession.
There is an art to writing clueless dopes that few people possess, but Momoka Koda possesses in spades. Kanato and Emika are finally together after being totally hopeless and their dating life involves being very cute and also totally hopeless.
Emika should not work on paper. She is pure and virginal in her 20’s, which isn’t the problem, but this has somehow lead her to not know anything about how bodies work. She gets in her own head and does very dumb things as a result.
Yet, somehow, Emika works incredibly well on paper. Everything about the sex is funny (I’ll even allow the ‘she has to be a virgin’ trope because she admits she has been saving herself for Kanato). Excruciatingly funny.
When she decides to educate herself about sex, nothing less than porn DVDs will do the job for our plucky heroine. Watching her watching these is riot, to say nothing of the resulting chaos when it comes to Kanato.
And, of course, the next thing she figures is that she’s easy for having had one entire round of sex. Leading to yet more misunderstandings and confusion and the silliest attempt at playing hard to get.
It’s a whole thing and that’s only one part of the volume. Sahoko gets to actually do something as a third wheel when a bizarre love pilgrimage begins to go entirely wrong in the wildest ways possible.
Kanato makes a lot of doe eyes and has his own travails getting to know Emika’s parents, although I would put this part of the story at the least interesting part. Also there are some weird mouth things going on with Emika’s mother.
Admitting that these two are adults really makes it all work for this whole volume. The romance is sweet, but it’s also mixed in with so much sheer stupidity and commentary (those fourth wall breaks should not work, but they so do!) that it becomes incredibly funny.
And the sex is handled with the perfect amount of romance, respect, and titillation before paying it all off. Really well done.
4.5 stars - 5 stars Emika, 4 stars Kanato, 4.5 for the average and rounded up because it all blends so well together despite seeming like it shouldn’t. Comedy of errors, but no errors of comedy.
So we have yet another entire volume of Kanato x Emiko (with one chapter featuring Sahoko and Kouta…barely). And yeah, they’re adults so they’re allowed to do adult things, but I wasn’t expecting a whole sex scene. I WAS READING THIS IN PUBLIC! DO YOU KNOW HOW HARD IT IS TO DISCRETELY READ A MANGA IN PUBLIC?!?! It's different with text because from a distance most of it looks the same, but you can't hide full page images.
We got our babies in this one!!!! But I am not loving the insecure theme of our second couple. Its just not something I relate to in adults who confess and have mutual feelings for one another. I like her but she just overthinks everything!
3 volumes of this couple having severe miscommunication is going to send me into orbit. And there's only 1 volume left. I would have rather heard about the main couple.
