How can she be his soul mate if he doesn't have a soul?
The Queen of Swords, a paranormal tale of undying love, tells the story of a white witch who returns every hundred years to reunite with her soul mate--a Celtic vampire who's been earthbound by a dark wizard's curse. Will she find a way for them to be together this time around?
Back cover blurb:
When Graham Logan draws the Queen of Swords, he knows he’s about to meet the love of his life. For the third time. But surrendering his heart will mean risking her life…or making her what he is--two things his beliefs won’t allow him to do.
Graham rages at God: Why give her back only to take her again?
Cat Fingal, the third incarnation of Graham’s other half, won’t let him slip away so easily. A white witch, she casts a spell to summon him—for answers, among other things.
Graham has other problems, too. Like the seductress who wants him for herself and the dark wizard who cursed him and killed Cat the first two times.
Nina Mason is an incurable romantic with strong affinities for history, mythology, and the metaphysical. She strives to write the same kind of books she loves to read: those that entertain, edify, educate, and enlighten. Her genres include erotic paranormal and historical romance. She also has written a political thriller.
Born and raised in Southern California, she now lives in Woodstock, Georgia, with her husband, youngest daughter, two cats, and a Westie named Robert.
Deliciously dark and richly evocative this is a phenomenal paranormal romance!
As sinfully seductive as chocolate ‘The Queen of swords’ is a tempting tale of undying love and dark desires. I was utterly enthralled by the exquisite backdrop that was sinister and spellbinding at the same time; wherein magic and mystery intertwined. Immortal Vampires and star-crossed lovers mingle in an extraordinary world filled with magic and terrible curses…
Short synopsis ~
A White Witch returns every one hundred years to reunite with her soul mate; a Celtic Vampire who is cursed to remain Earthbound and has no soul.
Incredibly imaginative and highly original this striking novel blends together fantasy {epic in places} with paranormal and romance for an explosive fusion. An exceptional debut novel that transcends by pushing genre boundaries, so as to expand the possibilities for the expected read! The eye-catching, gorgeous red & black cover is simply luscious and caught my attention instantly…like the Vampire Diaries or Twilight (with red & black). I was drawn to Graham Logan who was so magnetically attracted to Cat; the seductive and irresistible demon! Their connection was so electric that it sparks came from the pages, and I was struck by how sexy the story became in places. Targeted towards the adult reader, fans of paranormal and Vamp novels including Charlaine Harris will love this.
“Like moth to flame, you yearn for light. Come from shadow into my sight”
An example of such detail to create a vivid mental picture of the setting. As well as using metaphoric, lyrical prose as fluid as honey…
“The smoke and ethers enveloped, pulling him apart cell by cell until he felt like the sands of time moving through an hourglass. The cosmos was silent except for a haunting echo—like the sound inside a seashell. He felt at once connected to everything and nothing. Adrift yet highly attuned; blind yet all seeing; numb yet hypersensitive; defenseless yet omnipotent. Others were there, too—phantasmal energies blowing past and passing through like sleet.”
This sinfully delicious novel is wrought with such intensity as to blow you away, whilst compelling characters really ‘get under your skin’. Nina Mason’s assured narrative and gripping storyline is full of great premise, which makes me very excited for what is to come in book 2. The start of a sensational new series that reaches out to a wide-readership, ‘The Queen of Swords’ is a brilliant book that I cannot enthuse enough about and so I urge you to add it to your must-read list in a HURRY!!
I would like to thank the author so much for providing me with an ARC e-copy of her novel, for reading and reviewing purposes. I am thrilled to have encountered a new, fresh work that leaves me in suspence and anticipation as to the next installment…
What can I say about this unique storyline that has a concept well and truly of its own ? It's a must read and for so many reasons I honestly don't even know where to start. I had the pleasure in receiving a complimentary copy of this book by the Author Nina Mason, and Im so happy I had the opportunity. Nina Mason literally took me to an awakening dream world in this book. Not only was the chemistry and passion so engaging throughout the entire book , there were many elements of Power that has you hooked from start to finish.
The Queen of Swords, a paranormal tale of undying love. Set in modern-day England and Scotland, the book tells the story of a bookish white witch who returns every 100 years to reunite with her earthbound soul mate. The blurb alone doesn’t do this book justice: believe me!! It contains a lot more goodies that I’m sure will have you frantically flipping the pages and just waiting for those internal fires within to ignite. The Passion will make your spine tingle , your toes curl and your blood race. A deliciously compelling storyline that will have you hooked within the pages. I don't want to give away any spoilers, but lets just say this sexy, paranormal romance will not only knock your socks off but have you drawn into a world you may not be able to escape from.
Queen of Swords Where to start ??? I would give 10 stars if it were an option, there are so many elements at play in this book. The author has done her research and takes you to places that are so real you feel you are there. We have witches and vampires , tarot and love all rolled into a story that takes the reader to places past and present . Graham it seems is destine to have the love of his life or should I say lives taken from him . Cat is a witch and the most recent of his destine mate, Graham is a vampire. Nina Mason has done a fantastic job putting a story on paper that is very complicated to make flow, but she did this and from the start you are so into the story that you will not want to put it down. She used the tarot to guide the story , then in great detail wove the story. We travel through different times in history to present. Cat and Graham have a history in the truest sense of the word . Twice he has met and loved Cat only to lose her. Will he lose her again ????????? Both Cat and graham are portrayed as strong people and the rest of the cast also lend to this story each in their own way . Without giving away the whole story I will only say this is a must read . The author was brilliant weaving the story around the tarot and magic and reincarnation Mason has such a gift for story telling, I am anxious to see what she has in store for us next. This book is for mature readers . This book fulfills a persons reading senses to the max LOVED IT
This is the first book i read from this author and i must say I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed the read very much. As i have to admit i was a fan of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel, and I do watch The Vampire Diaries, and have read The twilight series and Interviw with a vampire as well as seeing the films. So I am no stranger to vampire romance,I must admit. It just that I haven't read a vampire paranormal in many years and I found I still enjoy them very much. I read this book in a day which is also a good sign meaning i couldn't put the book down.
It's about this lonely 200 year old Scottish Celtic earthbound very bonny vampire Graham Logan, where his soul mate woman a white witch whom he loves gets killed and gets reincarnated and reappears back every 100 years only to be taken from him again and again which leaves Graham broken hearted, tormented and devasted, History just keeps repeating itself and due to his vampiric powers he knew the third one was here before he even laid eyes on her, yet he could not resist to take a peek and meet her. All these reincarnations have the same similar name Caitriona, Catherine and the one now is Cathleen Fingal, but goes by the nickname Cat. Each woman had supernatural abilities too all being white witches, but not like Cat whose abilities excelled her past selves as they were all the same woman and all look identical just from past lives. Cat even has flashbacks of these lives from time to time.Plus the murderer of the women in the past was his sire a powerful Irish wizard by the name Gerard Fitzgerald.
As for Cat she too was a lonely woman who considered herself the oldest living virgin in the UK. Cat wanted very badly to relinquish that title being thirty years old,but she also wanted her first time to mean something to be in love. She was also a witch who had a bit of power herself. Cat is also very intelligent as she is a professor at the local university and had always been obsessed with vampires and everything Scottish.
Of course when they meet the attraction is more love at first sight but Graham decide he is going to leave and stay away from this third reincarnation to keep her alive of course Car had other ideas using love spells, and binding spells not realizing she doesn't really need those thing as he had always loved her but want to save her and keep her away from his cursed self. He doesn't even understand why this wizard his sire murders the women but he knows he will kill Cat too as his sire can feel what he feels at certain times. So he plans to leave England and go back to Scotland. What he doesn't realize Cat who has had a hard life with parents that both abused and neglected her has other plans for her Noble Scottish Vampire. Yet there is another villain in the story that doesn't want Graham to leave and wants to lay claim to him too, which will also put both Graham and Cat's life in peril too.
Now are these two soul mates just doomed from the start just star crossed lovers or will they be able to beat the odds and find a way to be together. Well you will have to read this The Queen of Swords and find out.
The book was very fast paced which means it was never boring lots of excitement, mystery, suspense, drama , betrayal also humor and love. I also enjoyed the castles friendly ghost which made me smile a lot. All the elements of a good book. I found the storyline very interesting and unique. Also I loved that the sometimes you were in the present and sometimes you were in the past in the book I enjoyed The Queen of Swords very much and look forward to future books by Nina Mason.---B
This book has it all, soulmates, hot vampires , Celtic lore, witches , and eternal love for the agers.

So when the tarot cards align and let them realize their undying dream, Will they forever be happy and stay with each other ,
Nina is a new author that I am very happy that I found. Her mix of Celtic lore, vampires and undying love of two soul mates. Is a new mix that makes for a very enjoyable read. Her characters are written with such intensity that you just want to cheer for. They are tortured and you can feel their pain. The pain of loss of love and knowing that out there there is something or someone that is your missing piece.
The historical aspects of the book added a lot of depth to these characters. To know what went on in Graham's life as he fought and found Cat was great. You find out a bit of the Scottish tradition and lore . Even the history of the kilt and the clansman. I know some of you might not like that but hey I love it. Anything Scottish from men to lore make me swoon. Oh did I also say that Graham is really hot in a kilt . One of the reason's Cat is in lust with him at first, well honestly who wouldn't be .
The mixture of magic and mythology kept me reading long into the night. The Queen of Swords was well researched and well written. Nina has created a new genre in the paranormal world. So if you like , vampires, witches, Celtic lore and well Scotland , men in kilts with great accents . Check this book out. I will say you will not be disappointed . This is a 5+ star book . So check out
Queen of Swords is a love story through the ages. Graham Logan has been cursed and turned into a vampire, unable to be fatally injured or die by natural means. His true love, Cat, a white witch, returns to him every hundred years, without memory of their past, yet always being drawn to him. The Tarot foretells their fate to be repeated each time they come together but does not predict happily ever after. Can destiny be changed?
In the time between Cat's incarnations, Graham makes other acquaintances, one of whom is also immortal and has thoughts of keeping Graham from connecting with his true love. The path of true love ne'er does run smooth.
This is an amazing debut novel from an author from whom we will eagerly await more. Her writing style is descriptive and draws the reader in. The plot is not predictable, keeping us wondering what will happen next. While it does have some very graphic scenes, for the adult reading crowd, it is the storyline that makes this a 5 star read.
I was grateful for an advance copy to read in exchange for an honest review.
I had the honor of being a Beta reader on this book. I don't want to give any spoilers away but..... OMGosh. this has to be one of the best books I've read in a while. Considering how many books I read that's really saying something.
You have witches, immortals, vampires, love, hate, magic who could possibly ask for more. I love this book and am anxiously awaiting more from Nina Mason. Fantastic author with one excellent imagination.
Get this one as soon as it's released. I promise you won't be disappointed!
What would you do to protect your soul mate? Graham Logan suffers a lonely existence in order to protect his. Cat gives her life, and returns over and over again to protect her's.
It's been said the third time's a charm. Will that be true for Graham and Cat.
You must read this novel! Vampires, Witches, Romance and a surprise twist ending!
I'm honored to have been given an ARC of The Queen of Swords. I look forward to reading more from Ms. Mason.
The Queen of SwordsThis book is a must read. It is an engrossing story of love that has spanned centuries. The lyrical writing and enticing story made it a memorable book that I just couldn't put down. Nina did an amazing job - congratulations on a fantastic book!!
I had the honor of being a beta reader on this book. What a pleasure--it's awesome! With vampires and witches in Scotland, Nina transports you to another world where past meets present and, in the words of Scottish poet Robert Burns, a man will "Love but her, and love forever."
Do you love to read all things Paranormal?? If so then this is definitely one for you to pick up. The cover gives you a bit of mysteriousness of what may be in the novel to pull her readers in and it grasped my attention, everyone knows that’s the first thing I look for. But of course a cover doesn’t make a book and the author did an amazing job in the story line flowing smoothly and without any holes. Graham, turned vampire has had to live a long time and been thru a lot of tragedy, especially losing his love over and over again. When he sees her again, he wants nothing to do with her because of fear that history will repeat itself. Faith in my opinion is has dealt him a whole lot of bad luck because no matter what it has a different event plan. Cat, feels like she has met this mysterious sexy man before but not until things start to unfold will the truth come out. I love the way her mind works especially after you get into the book and she casts a spell on one of the characters who has become evil as time has grown. The torture scene and aftermath is very unique and well thought, all I have to say is she got what she deserved. Will the third time this couple meet be the last and love prevail or will the evil that chases Graham take what once he loved away again? The author did an amazing job with the descriptions and while sometimes going back in the past of memories you were still able to keep up with what was happening. This is definitely one of a kind and I recommend this for readers who like witches, vampires, and other paranormal creatures
An eBook copy was provided in exchange for an honest review.
Warning: This book is most definitely for adults only, due to graphic scenes of sex and violence.
Are you familiar with the occult, specifically with Tarot cards? If you are, then you must be familiar with the symbolism of the Queen of Swords card. If you are not, don’t let that stop you from reading this book, as Nina explains the symbolism of the cards quite well.
The Queen of Swords is billed as a paranormal romance of undying love, between a vampire and a human. No, it’s not the same as that widely popular vampire series. The world that Nina Mason has created is far more sinister, darker and toes a fine line between acceptable and gruesome.
Graham Logan believes in the power of the Tarot Cards. When he draws the Queen of Swords, he braces himself for what is to happen next, for he knows that he will be meeting the love of his life, again, for the third time. He has learned from the first two encounters. He knows that to save her life this time, he must protect his heart.
Cat Fingal, also known as Caitrona and Catharine in her past two lives, is a white witch. She meets Graham in the library and is immediately drawn to him. She is intrigued by him and feels a connection that she cannot explain. She casts a spell to summon him, as she wants answers to a number of questions she has. Plus, she also has a condition that she wants reversed, and she needs Graham to get it done.
In Queen of Swords, I found it refreshing that the dark force’s who are keeping the lovers apart are obsessed with Graham, not Cat. And when I say, “dark forces” I am not kidding. There is a chapter aptly titled “The Full Metal Jacket of Kink.” Here’s a tip – when you get to that chapter, brace yourself. Take to heart the “full metal jacket” part of the chapter title.
In telling this story, Nina walks that tightrope that separates acceptable and cringe-worthy scenes. Considering that 80% of the characters are either preternatural beings, possessed with bloodlust and superhuman strength, don’t be surprised at how some of the scenes turn out.
Nina has a unique writing style and for this story, she draws heavily on the Irish brogue for character conversations as well as background and experiences. It was mostly due to the use of Irish language, the retelling of Irish history from the character’s POV, and the setting of the scenes that made it difficult for me to accept that this story is set in present day time. I found myself jarred a bit when a passage related to current technology found itself in the story, or when the Cat describes herself as wearing jeans or doing her dissertation. There were also a few gaps for me that I wished were addressed; like what happened to the caretaker of his castle when the final confrontation was happening? Where were the dogs?
This book is a completed story, though I do sense that the author left the door open for a possible story featuring Graham’s best friend and Cat’s roommate.
If you are looking for a story on the struggle of two lovers to be together and face the obstacles that separate them with some magic and paranormal abilities thrown in to the mix, then grab this book, and settle in for the ride. Just be warned, if you are squeamish of heart or into vanilla relationships, this book is definitely not for you. But if you are willing to explore some darkness, some kink, and yet hold on to the hope and idea that love conquers all, Cat and Graham can show you the way.
The Queen of Swords by Nina Mason, a review by Stella Coulson. A sophisticated but sexy take on the Vampire genre. Was struck by the keen eye to Historical detail of Scottish history,English and Scottish slang/colloquialisms and references to classic Vampire stories, Fae and Vampire Legends. The Author Nina Mason writes with passion and love for her setting and the characters. The world and its mythology is unique and striking. It also rather sexual, which adds, not distracts from the plot. The book's antagonist is Fitzgerald a depraved, twisted Byron figure who puts me in mind of Polidori's 'Lord Ruthven' who has his own three Vampire Brides ( All be it male brides). I actually was intrigued by this aspect. One thinks it would make a fascinating spin off. The two main protagonists are Cat (the mortal Witch) and Graham (The centuries old Scottish Vamp). Cat is sweet and vast intelligent and makes us toot for her. We the readers are invited to glimpse into Graham's world, share memories of his vast years upon this Earth and feel the metaphysical bond between the lovers. Graham has been doomed to watch cat die, over and over again, while he retains the knowledge and waits for her to be reborn. Fitzgerald made a dark pact to make Graham suffer. A supernatural battle of wills, life, love and the immortal soul. A clever and enchanting novel. ***** stars. I'd give this all the stars in the sky. I enjoyed it immensely.
Wow what a book, loved it. Hard to categorise as it's vampire romance, witches, part historical, Sexy too!
Souls can be connected that's what Cat and Graham are The hot scots man is having none of it, his played the game before and doesn't want to relive the heartache. Cat has different ideas......I loved Cat, a woman that knows what she wants and will use everything in her power to acheive it!!
I feel I know Graham, we learned so much about him in the history flashbacks and his behaviour in current day, I can't see you not liking him - His adorable and lovable.
We get the story from both Cat and Graham points of view. I found this book enticing, I didn't want to put it down to go to sleep.
What will you get from this book, fabulous characthers, great dialogue, amazing story including Romance, sex, danger, paranormal and a bit of a history lesson too and not forgetting Graham's sexy accent!
It's a stand alone book too with a satisfying end :)
* I was gifted a copy of this book for an honest review.*
I was asked to beta read this book, and was I ever glad that I did! I won't spoil it for you but I have to say that it has everything in it that I like! Good guys and gals that you will love, and people that you will love to hate!
I truly hope that Nina makes this into a series, because I would buy every book in it!
An enjoyable, well written story. It reminded me of Outlander but with a vampire twist. There were witches, vampires, past lives, an evil villain and a sizzling, timeless romance. I loved the contrast of modern day with the past flashbacks and how Cat uses the advantages of past mistakes and modern technology try to prevent history repeating itself. Warning to sensitive readers: rape & torture.
This is a great paranormal romance that has detail. It has a spellbinding story of mythology, vampires and witchcraft and tarot. Nina Mason is an amazing story teller.
PJV Quickie: If you were to take Lauren Kate’s Fallen, Karen Marie Moning’s Highlander series, and E.L. James’s 50 Shades and throw them into a blender you would get Nina Mason’s THE QUEEN OF SWORDS. The main characters, Graham & Cat, have a love story very reminiscent of the romances between Daniel & Luce in Fallen (soul mates, one of whom is immortal and the other who keeps reincarnating) and Hawk & Adrianne in Beyond the Highland Mist (fae interference, hot Scottish dude from Highland times/modern every girl pairing). Where does E.L. James’s book fit into the equation? Well like Ana, Cat starts off extremely naïve and innocent for her age/intelligence and gets involved with a sexually complicated older rich guy, and there's also a BDSM scene. THE QUEEN OF SWORDS a fun if trope-y story, with a few flaws, but it’s a good time and for the most part I enjoyed it.
Review: Even though I did mostly enjoy the book, I had one problem with it, and to me at least it’s a pretty big deal. There is a perpetuation in this book, which is supposed to be set in modern day England/Scotland, of an outdated and wholly dis-proven belief about women’s bodies, and sex. Mason mentions several times throughout the novel the incorrect idea many people still hold about the nature and function of the hymen and its use as a tool for testing someone’s virginity. Even though both MCs have at least one advanced degree and are admitted fans of pornography and erotica, apparently both still believe in the antiquated notion that the hymen completely covers the vagina and must be popped in order for a woman to have sex the first time. She further espouses this myth by wrongly stating that a hymen can only be popped by a penis. Learn about all the ways this myth is wrong in this video: FYI, Hymens Don't Break — Here's Some Real Talk About That 'Pop Your Cherry' Myth
I think the only reason I am so put off by that if because of the fact that for the female MC it is a BFD and she brings it up several times. I’m distressed because this book can and will probably appeal to teenagers who may not actually be fully informed on the realities of this myth simply because Mason portrays it the same way that a lot of pop culture does.
So that’s my big pet peeve with the book, aside from that, and some continuity errors (that have probably been smoothed out since the advanced copy I have was created), it’s a really good book. As far as vampire romances go, this one isn’t what I’ve gotten used to, and I like that a lot. The male MC is not a brooding, gorgeous teenage boy perpetually trapped in high school, and he takes a minute to appreciate that for the reader, noting that he’s lucky that he wasn’t changed until he was a man. Mason veers away from the usual vampire tropes and brings a celtic flavour to her vampire mythology. She makes a point of saying that there are MANY kinds of vampires, but acknowledges that the ones being dealt with in QUEEN OF SWORDS are of the Fae, and they don’t necessarily need blood to survive, just human DNA. That last bit brings about an interesting plot point tied to sex, I’ll let you discover that one for yourself, but I had a good laugh about it.
There are many echoes in this book of other books I’ve read. Aside from the books I mentioned above in the Quickie I also had moments where I found myself drawing parallels between Graham and Jamie from Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander especially his relationship with his nemesis. The meeting between Graham and Cat in the University Library had me remembering the meeting between Diana and Matthew in A Discovery of Witches, except with more contemporary books and less magic. I can also draw several comparisons between Cat and Bella from Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight Saga although I’m sure Cat herself would object to them, but the biggest one is that for a 28 year old Professor and Doctoral Candidate though she is decidedly naïve.
Overall feelings: I enjoyed the book, I had a few issues with it, but there are very few books that I can’t find something to harp on. It’s a fun book, with a unique spin on the tropes of both of its genres. It has a good, and positive portrayal of both Wicca and the Tarot, which at one point had me envisioning both Live and Let Die and The Craft, although as I am not a practitioner of either of those I really couldn’t tell you if they were accurate. I did study a little bit about Paganism in some of my religion and culture classes and from what I know of it Mason’s portrayal seems like it hits the mark. It’s a good one shot novel and a fast read, especially if you’re in the mood for both vampires and sexy Scots.
Read this book if:
You enjoyed any or all of the books I mentioned in the Quickie You like vampire romances You like Scottish romances You have at least a passing interest in Paganism or the occult
Take a pass if:
You didn’t like at least 1 of the books mentioned in the Quickie You’re not a fan of mixed mythologies (fae + vampire) You’re looking for action, this book has a lot of exposition

This novel was such an amazing and unexpected surprise of a read! I read the entire novel in one day because, from the very first page, Nina had me hooked and would not let me go. I [personally] was left a little unclear about the novel from the blurb, so I'm going to attempt to write one.
*** Cat Fingel, a white witch and college professor, has always felt as if she didn't belong in her family, as if she's been searching for something to fill the immense loneliness in her heart. Then she meets Graham Logan, a vampire Scotsmen, and she immediately knows--feels in her very soul--that he is the one she has been waiting for, that he is the one she has been preparing for her entire life.
Too bad Graham is determined to keep Cat as far away from him as possible, in the hopes that he will protect her from meeting the same fate as her previous two reincarnations--death at the hands of his creator, Gerald Fitzgerald. He hopes that keeping his distance from Cat will keep Fitzgerald from finding her and ripping her away from him for another century. Cat, however, has no plans of sitting quietly as Graham forces both of them into miserable and lonely existences, and she is willing to face down both Branwen, a seductress hellbent on keeping Graham for herself, and Fitzgerald, who is a dark wizard, in order to ensure their happily-ever-after.
Will she be able to save him this time, or will their story come to another untimely end, leaving two broken souls in its wake? ***
Hmm, I hope that helped! I loved the fast-paced feel of this story. It was full of romance, seduction, frustration, surprises, misunderstandings, heartbreak, and ultimately undying love. The only problem I had with this novel was there were a lot of "story-telling" moments, which slowed the story down at times--hence the missing 0.5 star. Overall, I could not put this novel down, and I regret putting off reading it for so long. Absolutely recommend this one, and I'm interested to see if Nina's other works are just as spell-binding.
A story of curses, reincarnation, love lost, love regained, and carried by the fear of losing it all over again unless an evil wizard bent on capturing the soul of Graham Logan can be destroyed. Graham easily recognizes Cat Fingal as his twin flame, his soul mate, and his lost love who has come to him a third time. As much as he wishes another chance with her, he knows the only way to keep her safe is to stay away from her. Easier said than done when she’s a witch, and she conjures him into her presence and holds him captive under a spell for a weekend.
THE QUEEN OF SWORDS by Nina Mason is an excellent debut novel for this talented author. Caught up in the story immediately, it swept me away through images created in my mind as we learned the history of this boldly modern highlander who still carries himself like the lord that he is from a time long past. Through flashbacks of both Graham and Cat, we learned their history as lovers, how they were lost to each other twice before and the reasons for Graham’s hesitation when he first encounters Cat. Nina mingles knowledge of tarot cards as well as spells to keep the story moving forward while these star-crossed lovers’ attempt to stop Fitzgerald and break the curse that has a deep hold on Graham. The only time that I felt the story lagged was the two weeks journeying the Scottish countryside – it was interesting and a great way for Nina to boast her knowledge of Scottish history but I felt it took away from the excitement of their putting their plan against Fitzgerald into place.
I highly recommend reading THE QUEEN OF SWORDS by Nina Mason to anyone who loves a highlander story and the excitement of a paranormal. The love story is grand, the spells fascinating, and the happily-ever-after sweet.

Wow Nina Mason I think I might be in love with you right now. This book was more than I thought it would be. It combined a past love of mine with a new love. I have always been a huge fan of the paranormal genre, and though I read a bit of everything it remains my favorite. Besides the paranormal aspect of the book it also has men in kilts which is another favorite of mine.
Nina managed to write a book that enveloped everything into one can't put down read. It has vampires and witches along with the right amount of drama and some star crossed lovers. The spells seemed realistic and believable and worked well with the story and that is actually a big thing for me when it comes to a book with witches. I need the spells to be believable for the book to work for me and Nina managed to do just that. The tarot parts of the book were some of my favorites. I loved how Cat and Graham always looked to the cards to see what their future was gonna be and if it would be differ from what they expected or thought.
Nina has an eye for detail and it's what separates this book from others of this sort. She kept me on my toes guessing and wondering what would happen next. Nothing was predictable and I loved that about this book. Each page was a mystery to me. This book is a definite favorite of 2014 for me. I don't think it will take long for others to agree once they read this book. A must read for anyone 18 and over due to some graphic content. I can't wait to see what she has for us all next.
Personal Note: I received a complimentary copy of this author awhile back from the author in exchange for my honest review. The minute it was available to purchase I had to go out and buy it.
I was given this book by the author and Paranormal Romance and Authors The Rock for an honest review.
Graham and Cat have history, long and tangled history. can they stay together this time??
a delightful tale of a vampire, who falls in love only to have his love wrenched from him. twice. this time, he finds his love reincarnated in Cat, a witch, Tarot reader, and vampire historian. she knows Graham, but not from where, until she begins to dream, or rather remember! and the sassy thing is not going to let the love between them die a third time.
what made this most enjoyable was Graham, mostly! a true Scot, through and through, he seems to be a stunning mix of old and new, both language and his ideas and ideals, being a vampire several hundred years old. the book is steeped in Scottish history, myths and legends, making it a little bit more interesting than your usual vampire romance. but Ms Mason writes the myths and legends with Graham or his Granda as an integral part of it, so its not just the telling of the myths and legends, its you living them, through Graham. also, some vampire myths are pooh poohed here, but I do like that! some other paranormal creatures partake in this book, too. Cat did get on my nerves a little bit, but not really sure why. I did like her innocence, and the way she was determined that she and Graham would be together. What I didn't see coming was the way the story resolved itself. suffices to say, they got their happy ending, just not how you think.
this book will be shelved on my historical romance AND vampire shelf, as much of the book is about the past lives of Cat, and Graham as well as the present one.
all in all, a great read, and I will look out for others by this author.
I really enjoy reading paranormal romance, and Queen of Swords fit this bill perfectly. It includes vampires, witches, love won and lost over the centuries, and a curse. From the moment I saw the trailer for the book, I knew I wanted to read it, just because I was drawn in immediately. I thought the whole concept was great. Having finished, I can say that I was not disappointed, and I loved it. There are some very steamy parts as well.
I think what really brought the story alive for me was the character development. Graham was a male romantic lead that I fell in love with from the moment he was introduced. The fact that he was Scottish only added to that, and I was drawn to him as a character, and wanted to learn more about him and his background. I'll admit here that I am somewhat partial to vampires as opposed to most other paranormal creatures, and he's easily one of my favorite fictional vamps now. I also will say the chemistry between Graham and Cat was fantastic. As far as Cat, she was a great female romantic lead as well. Because of that, I found myself rooting for them to end up with the resolution they deserved.
Something else I really enjoyed about the book was the historical elements, and the stories that Graham told about events of the past that he lived through or had heard about drew me in that much deeper. That level of detail shows that research was done, and I can appreciate that. As someone who enjoys learning about history, I'm fascinated when it's incorporated into fiction.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes witches, vampires, or paranormal romance. A well deserved 5/5 platypires.
A love story for the ages with star-crossed lovers, a brand new genre of erotic paranormal romance with the tarot cards taking a major role in the lives of our hero and heroine! Nina Mason weaves a beautiful tapestry of life in the timeline of 200 years featuring flashbacks of Graham and his lady love Cat characterised by trips to London & Paris in 1800's & 1900's and the present 'these trips in time' while being in the present...This was Very Well Done! I love this blending of time. This seductively, sinful weaving of timelines through the words of our author Nina Mason is about to send you hurtling through the years. "The Queen of Swords" is an erotic journey to find and save his lady who Graham has lost twice before... I was given this book by author Nina Mason for an honest review. This is the authors first book and all I can say is this book is going to be the start of a awesome journey for the author and for her new readers.
Cat as she liked being called felt like she had known this stranger for a very long time even though she did not even know his name and she was drawn to him like a moth to a flame. Graham was living a life of his own making which didn't include any involvement and in almost total despair. When they met their past lives intertwined with each other and would not let them be separated again.
There are no bad parts to this book as far as I am concerned. The flow of the story line is great and the depth of the 2 main characters are so touching that they pull you into their romance and sadness.
Trying to save him from the curse Cat is willing to sacrifice herself for him and Graham will do everything in his power to save Cat from harm. Together they come to deal with his past and her future with him. If love concurs all then maybe the third time is the charm when it comes around again with them.
This book has vampires, romance, a evil wizard and a sadistic witch with some sexual situations rolled up into this book. This book is for any paranormal vampire romance lover who likes a little thriller on the side. I suggest this book is for a mature reader because some of the sexual situations are fairly graphic in nature.
When Cat Fingal sees a handsome Scottish stranger in the library, she senses an uncanny feeling of familiarity about him... but little does she know that they have met before... in another life. The couple seems cursed to be kept apart, as each time Graham and Cat fall in love, they’re ripped apart. As in her other incarnations, Cat has a strong connection to magic and her tarot cards, which aid her in predicting the future and interpreting the present, and this time she is determined to overcome the jealous seductress and the evil wizard who both want a piece of Graham—after all, it’s in the cards... right?
The Queen of Swords is a well-researched story rich in detail about Scotland, both its scenery and its history. It was all the more enjoyable to read after having been to Scotland myself, buying the book as a treat for my flight home. I am not usually a fan of soul mates, since their love for each other is essentially pre-destined, but Mason does a good job at maintaining the tension and uncertainty as to whether their relationship will last, and there are certainly bumps along the road to happiness (not simply because of the antagonists).
I would recommend this book to fans of Scotland, vampires and “soul mate” stories, and I definitely look forward to future books by this author.
I purchased this book based on the 'honest' reviews on this site. I think I only finished it because I couldn't believe it was so bad! And bad in every sense - the writing was all tell tell tell with no show - even the sex scenes elicited no feelings or interest. The plot could have been interesting but the characters were so one dimensional and the hero - well, he was written with no real thought except how - the best way I can describe him - is how someone would make a man think, feel and talk if they had never actually been in a relationship. The Scottish jargon was I'll handled and the plot was tied up neatly without any real excitement to build for the reader. Lots of contradictions so at times I re-read passages just to confirm the contradictions. Boring. Can't believe this was even published. Maybe this was self-published? If not - made me think I should write a novel if this book got published. But please - be honest with your reviews. Note to self - if someone had to give their book away to get reviews, then question it. Wish I could get my time back from being wasted on this poorly written book.
I received a complimentary copy for an honest review. The Queen of Swords is a great debut book by Nina Mason. When the past meets the present worlds collide in a unique way for interesting paranormal story. Graham is a vampire and has lost his love twice over the centuries. He is hesitant to give in and get involved with her this time around. Cat has saved herself for the love she has known she was meant for. The same one her past selves have loved. When she finally meets him she doesn't want to hold back anymore. After finally giving into each other they will have a great deal to overcome before they can be happy. This book was filled with love, drama, suspense, steamy situations, jealousy, and so much more. Can't wait to see what comes next from this author.
this was an awesome read! this was an awesomely dark paranormal romance Graham Logan has been cursed by an evil dark wizard the wizard turned him into a vampire.. he has been tortured for over 200 years.. He lonely miserable and misses his one true love who has been taken from him twice... Cat is a professor at a local university she is also studying to get her PhD she have to finish a research paper she meets Graham and thinks she has seen or knows him right away cat is also a witch she summons Graham to her home she wants the story of how they know each other and what else happened in their past lives... the story between these two are awesome I love the historical storytelling in it... everything about this story was amazing and I recommend it to everybody I don't know what else to say without giving out spoilers. IT WON'T DISAPPOINT!
Queen of Swords is a dark and gritty paranormal romance richly steeped in Scottish history, bewitching characters, and a passionate romance time cannot quell.
In Nina Mason's debut novel, Graham and Cat find one another through an ethereal pull that at first she does not understand. As the story progresses, we learn about their history and the impossible odds stacked against them. An excellent balance between external forces and internal conflicts makes this a well rounded page turner. The characters and well developed and easy to envision as well, even the minor ones.
Not only is the plot compelling, but the rich detail makes it a book you want to savour. I thoroughly enjoyed Queen of Swords and will certainly look for others by this new and talented author. Well done Ms. Mason.
