"Ma non mi va di fornirti ulteriori ragguagli sulla situazione dello Stato. Ho in uggia me stesso e non riesco a scrivere senza provare profondo dolore. Tenuto conto del clima di oppressione generale, ho la capacità di mantenermi scevro di bassezza d'animo, ma in rapporto alle gloriose imprese che ho realizzato in passato mi comporto con scarso coraggio." (Marco Tullio Cicerone)
Born 3 January 106 BC, Arpinum, Italy Died 7 December 43 BC (aged 63), Formia, Italy
Marcus Tullius Cicero was a Roman philosopher, statesman, lawyer, political theorist, and Roman constitutionalist. Cicero is widely considered one of Rome's greatest orators and prose stylists.
Note: All editions should have Marcus Tullius Cicero as primary author. Editions with another name on the cover should have that name added as secondary author.
Read as part of the e-pistulae newsletter, which sent Cicero's letters as e-mails around the time when they were written. Translation initially by Shackleton Bailey, later by the newsletter's author.
Cicero's love and friendship for Atticus was so heartwarming. I could practically see him laying down on his bed, legs kicking in the air, while he writes all the gossip to his best friend. It's not what actually happened, but it's the exact same feeling.
