The Night Farm

Rate this book
Rhys Anderson is looking for a fresh start after a health diagnosis forces him to sell his beloved tea shop. When a small farmstead goes up for sale in the mountains, he jumps at the opportunity to live a quieter life away from the hustle and bustle of the big city and find a new place to plant roots.

After packing up his few belongings, Rhys settles in for the lengthy cross-country drive to his new home. The farm rests on the outskirts of a mysterious town called Wylder Wood, hidden deep in the forests out west and not found on any map. The idyllic little farmstead is perfect for his needs, and his new neighbors are quick to introduce themselves as soon as nightfall arrives.

The locals are welcoming and friendly, but not at all what they initially seem, and Rhys soon realizes that the otherworldly residents want to sink their fangs into something more than his crops...

The town of Wylder Wood comes to life when the sun goes down, and long nights on the farm are filled with friendship, romance, and good eats aplenty!

This is the coziest, most wholesome book I have read in a long time, and I cherished every minute of it! The spooky ambience and simmering “there’s something deeper going on here” plot keep the story moving, and at every turn Davidson hands you a “here, this will make you feel better” passage about being kind to yourself and healing through difficulty. I needed this in my life, as do many others, I’m sure.

Wylder Wood is a place I wish I could go visit, and the whole cast of characters (Cane and Cas especially) add so much dimension to The Night Farm. I want more and more and more of them. What a friend they are to our main character, in their own ways. And Rhys. Oh, Rhys. He is the perfect POV to meet Wylder Wood and its citizens through, and I felt so deeply for him right away. Without spoilers, the way he handles being forced to make some drastic life decisions based on less than ideal circumstances was so relatable, and the whole time I was wishing for his healing and growth and acceptance in his new home.

Part 1 of The Night Farm is a beautiful introduction to this Halloweentown-esque place and the wonderful paranormal beings who dwell within. Spooky and comforting like a cup of hot apple cider, I am eagerly waiting for more.

Excuse me for being dramatic but I need nothing else in this world except Wylder Wood. Please and thank you.

I never got along with the stardew valley game (everything is so small and I cannot see well) but always loved the vibe of it and this book encapsulates that game so well and beyond that too. This is literally cosy horror at its finest.

This is perfect if you want something light and spooky and filled with an amazing cast of characters that you end up loving a bit too much considering they're fictional.

Patiently (impatiently) waiting for the next one.

I buddy read this with a friend who picked it up from a local author at a convention, so it was a nice book to have conversation over. It's indie published, which is somewhat telling in the writing, both through the style and some of the character work. I think this would've worked a lot better for me in a graphic novel format, or even as a videogame (especially with it's Stardew Valley vibes). Although the author is still early in their writing career I do think they have potential with the right editor and more projects under their belt. If you're looking for a cozy Halloween read where you can turn your brain off, this is a cute option.

OMG THIS IS SUCH A CUTE BOOK!!
I'm absolutely in love with the worldbuilding, characters and premise for this series.
My only con would be how easily all the characters comfort each other and how emotionally mature and confident they all are, but it's a cozy paranormal type fantasy so it's not a huge deal breaker.
Ah and the twist at the end?? the foreshadowing?? PERFECTION
I cannot wait to dive right into part 2 ✨️
