To find her missing sister, an unconventional governess must infiltrate an infamous gambling den owned by a devilishly handsome rake.

Frankie Turner should be the perfect she’s genteelly born, impoverished, and owns a pair of ugly oversized spectacles. Now if only she didn’t have an alarming tendency to forget her charges while contemplating mathematics principles...

When Frankie’s impulsive younger sister goes missing, Frankie has no idea where to begin the search to find her. But when she discovers hasty marriages materializing between “troublemaking” women and men who don’t deserve them—she knows her sister is somehow involved. The only thread connecting the groomsmen is a membership to Rockford’s, an exclusive gambling hell owned by the devilish Jasper Jones. And it just so happens that Jasper has recently become the guardian of a sullen fifteen-year-old.

Jasper suspects his new governess has an ulterior motive for being in his household, but he can hardly find the time to uncover it when his life is in a constant uproar. First, Frankie teaches his niece how to count cards and then she tries to break into his study. When he finally learns Frankie’s true reason for being there, he agrees to help the brilliant mathematician find her missing sister, even if it means giving her a fake dowry and watching men trip over themselves in her presence. As he and Frankie work together to dismantle a nefarious scheme, Jasper realizes that for the first time in his life, he’s gambled his heart—and possibly lost it.

One Liner: Mindless fun (extra love for Cecelia)

Frankie Turner has always loved mathematics more than everything else. When her family’s finances force her and her younger sister to find employment, she does her best to keep things going.

However, Frankie’s sister is missing and the search leads her to a disturbing pattern among the ton. Seems confident and rich ladies are being found in compromising situations and are married off to men with heavy debts. The common element is the membership to Rockford, the famous gambling den run by Jasper Jones.

Frankie joins Jasper’s house as a governess to his fifteen-year-old niece, Cecelia. She is determined to uncover the truth and prevent more such weddings (and find her sister). Dealing with Jasper is not easy but looks like both will get more than what they bargained for!

The story comes in the third-person POV of Jasper and Frankie, with a few chapters from the Dove’s POV.

My Thoughts:

This is a standalone second book in the series though it may have minor spoilers for the first one. I didn’t read the previous book but had no issues following this.

I like to call this genre a contemporary historical romance since the stories are abundant in anachronisms. That’s okay since I read these for entertainment. Still, I was a little annoyed by the repeated ‘Holy Queen V!’ exclamations by the FMC.

Though we have secret services, a mystery, and dangerous men, the book is predominantly romance. The other elements are present but support the romantic track.

It has insta-lust and some scenes get hot and heavy. However, the act doesn’t occur until the last quarter which is a good move. There’s quite a bit of banter. Some of it is hilarious. While the main characters aren’t wow, they deliver what’s expected of them.

Cecelia, the fifteen-year-old niece, deserves an entire point. She is easily the highlight of the book. I wouldn’t have enjoyed the story this much if not for her and her antics. Gosh, she never stops!

Despite the descriptions and internal dialogues, the pacing is pretty decent. The dual POV helps too as we get a few insights into running gambling dens as well as the hidden lives of the ton (and their duplicity).

While the book is mostly in a lighter vein, it deals with some heavy themes like gender bias, societal bias, bullying by the ton, parental expectations, snobbery, and the general inequality (hypocrisy) seen in the then society.

There’s some danger as well but it doesn’t change the book’s tone. The situation is handled well with some (comic) relief immediately.

There’s an epilogue which is not an epilogue. It is a teaser for book three. The only way it can be called an epilogue is why declaring it belongs to the overarching plot. I wish the MCs of this book also had a small role in the epilogue.

The author’s note talks about the inspiration for the main characters and the plotline.

To summarize, Never Gamble Your Heart is an easy and lighthearted read with thoughtful themes. It works well as a breather between heavy reads.

Thank you, NetGalley and Forever (Grand Central Publishing), for eARC. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.

At one point, a carpet in a library was described to have the gods and goddesses of pagan religions on it (including Lakshmi Devi). My first instinct was anger (you do not walk over gods) but then I realized this suits the period. Heck, even today, we see brands printing our gods on innerwear and doormats. We have to run campaigns for them to withdraw the products only for another brand to do it a few months later.

Never Gamble Your Heart is the second book in the Secret Society of Governess Spies series that is part historical fiction, part romance, and part mystery. I really enjoyed it, just as I did the first book (Never Blow A Kiss). We travel to 1838 in England, mostly in London. Once again, we have a governess placed in a wealthy home, but whose secret purpose is to spy on the owner, who may or may not be connected to a nefarious scheme by which rich young women are “forced” (by the ever-so-strict social conventions of the times) into marriage with destitute but titled men. Jasper Jones is the owner of a super-successful gambling “hell” and all the previously destitute grooms are members of his club.

Frankie (Frances) is a math whiz, who we met briefly in book one, and I had to laugh at her attempt to interest her 15-year-old charge, Cecilia (Jasper’s niece), in math by teaching her how to play (and win at!) cards, specifically the game we call 21 or Blackjack. Cecilia was probably my favorite character; her youthful exuberance was a breath of fresh air, compared to the formal manners of the “ton.” Frankie was placed at the Jones house by an agency run by a mysterious woman known only as The Dove. The Dove delights in exposing the bad behavior of the upper classes.

I also loved Frankie and her “frank” way of talking. The one weird thing was that she said “Holy Queen V” a few times. I can’t imagine that people really said that back then - but maybe the author has done her research and they did?

Note: there are a couple of very spicy scenes between Frankie and Jasper starting about 75% through the book.

You can definitely read Never Gamble Your Heart as a standalone. There is a brief cameo of characters from book one, but that’s all.

Thank you to Forever and NetGalley for the opportunity to read a review copy of this book and to listen to a review copy of the audiobook. I bounced between the ebook and the audiobook, which was beautifully narrated by two people: Ella Lynch and Rupert Channing. All opinions are my own.

Never Gamble Your Heart by Lindsay Lovise
Secret Society of Governess Spies #2. Historical romance. Can be read as a stand-alone bit better if you at least know the premise of “governess spies”.
Frankie Turner is a spy. She’s going to work as a governess for Gambling Hall owner Jasper Jones. She wants to review his ledgers to see if Jasper is involved with the dowry hunters that are members of his club. She makes it clear she is not a servant but Jasper is more than aware of that fact. He’s fascinated with Frankie and doesn’t believe she is just a governess or that she’ll be able handle his niece.

🎧 I alternated between an ebook and an audiobook. The narration is performed by Ella Lynch and Rupert Channing, each performing their chapter’s POV. They both did a wonderful job with emotional expression and timing. Their voices were compatible with similar timing and volume though I did have to slow down and replay whenever Cecilia spoke since as an excitable teen, she was amusingly chatty.
Especially liked that the audiobook included the authors note at the end.

My main issue with the story is that it starts as if you already know Frankie is a spy and on a mission with this new governess job. For someone that hasn’t read the blurb or the prior story, you may feel a bit lost.

Loved Frankie. She’s a math wiz and factors everything by statistics. Not really acceptable for the times. So smart she’s even able to use her theory skills looking for clues in a death. Clearly a good match for Jasper.
The story is a bit convoluted since she is investigating men marrying for a dowry, but in reality searching for her missing sister. It’s connected but the sister piece is seldom mentioned but for a few pages. This doesn’t make the story any less readable, it just a bit startling when it comes up as a reminder.
Enjoyed the push and pull between Frankie and Jasper and their being manipulated by Cecilia. Fun, sexy, and several layered factors for a longer romance.

I received a copy of this from NetGalley and publisher Hachette Audio.

3.5 stars. Never Gamble Your Heart is the second book in The Secret Society of Governess Spies series. This was my first time reading this historical romance author.

This one I kinda struggled with. While it had a lot of things I enjoy: historical romance, self made man (fish monger turned successful gaming hell owner), she’s a governess, secrets, gaming hell. I was really enjoying the first half, laughed out loud a couple times, was really into the characters and how smart she was with math and accidentally teaching his niece to count cards on her first day (lol when he realizes). But then somewhere around the middle/second half the story, it felt like there was maybe too much added in and nothing was given the time it probably should have had.

Jasper is a gaming hell owner who has suddenly become the guardian of his 15-year old niece (his late brother’s daughter). He’s in need of a governess for his niece and hires Frankie, who was sent over from a governess agency that is actually more than it seems… “The Dove” owns a governess agency and uses her governesses to spy on the ton to hold them accountable for their crimes and tip off the police. Frankie is one of those governesses and The Dove wants her to find out the identities of dowry thieves (men who purposefully compromise ladies to get access to their dowries) and in return, Frankie can find out more about her missing sister.

The first half of the story was solid, the second half lost my interest. So much started happening plot wise and I just wasn’t as invested in the plot points. I think more attention could have been spent on the couple and their romance. The cover is pretty, love the green dress!

I received an ALC from the publisher, all thoughts in this review are my own.

I love the premise of this series - female spies work as governesses in aristocrat's homes to root out the corrupt and villainous in the Victorian era, when traditional law enforcement couldn't touch high society. The spymaster, The Dove, runs a fake training school for governesses, but she's actually training women in espionage tactics.

In this installment, the brilliant mathematician, Frances "Frankie" Turner, agrees to help The Dove discover who is entrapping wealthy, outspoken young women into marriages in exchange for The Dove's help finding her missing sister. The common thread that connects the men who are being called the Dowry Thieves is that they all belong to a gaming club run by Jasper Jones. Frankie becomes governess to Jasper's newly orphaned niece and her unconventional lessons (learning math through card games) intrigues and infuriates Jasper. Frankie didn't get the espionage training from The Dove, so she blunders a bit, which is pretty charming. Of course, the niece loves her and Jasper grows to enjoy her company, too.

This is a fast paced book - the physical part of Frankie and Jasper's relationship took me by surprise, but suspend your disbelief and enjoy the ride!

There were parts when I was convinced that Frankie is neurodivergent - she talks about not always picking up on social cues and she is unflinching in delivering the truth, even when it might mean she is put in a difficult situation. She's a fun character to follow and definitely not your typical historical romance heroine!

I love that in addition to the story of Frankie and Jasper, we get more of an overarching storyline for The Dove. I imagine her story will be the last in the series. She's a fascinating character getting developed very slowly. I'm hooked!

I just loved this one! It's a wonderful mix of historical romance and mystery with such a great premise with the governess spies. This is the second book in this series, and once again, Lindsay Lovise does a great job creating this world of intrigue and romance.

I simply adored Frankie! She's fantastic and
so very intelligent. I loved how dedicated she was to finding the culprit and helping her sister and all of the other young women who have been targeted. Jasper was a great hero! He's perfectly grumpy, but deep down, he's a big softy. His relationship with his niece was sweet, and I loved his growth throughout the book.

The chemistry between Frankie and Jasper was amazing, and I couldn't get enough of their delightful banter. They were really a great couple. Overall, this book was so much fun!

Rake meets his match!

Lindsay Lovise continues her Governess Spies series with wonderful tension between bad boy Jasper Jones, gambling palace owner, and a mathematically gifted young woman, Miss Frances (Frankie) Turner posing as a governess who’s finagled her way into Jasper’s household as a governess for his niece Cecelia.
Cecelia is a handful but that doesn’t worry Frankie one iota.
Frankie’s on the hunt for her sister who has disappeared after haring off to investigate her friend’s sudden and inexplicable marriage.
The Dove, who has a network of governess spies in high up places is looking for whoever is behind a spate of young, outspoken women who suddenly find themselves forced into marriage. The common thread is Jasper’s gambling establishment.
We’ve seen this trope before, rake meets intelligent young woman and his life is turned on its head.
Lovise does the trope magnificently, with dastardly doings as the lively alternate focus.
The main characters have just the right amount of strength, feistiness, and humor.

A Forever ARC via NetGalley.
Many thanks to the author and publisher.

Never Gamble Your Heart by Lindsay Lovise ( Book #2 in the Secret Society of Governess Spies series )
Publication date: 4th February 2025

I LOVED the premise of this series not only is it female spies working as governesses but it gave me major Bridgerton feels, actually I think Victorian era element as a whole has grown on me which makes me enjoy such books, on that note I requested this book without realising it was part of a series so I'll definitely go back to the first one -- They can be read as standalones as each book follows different characters.

Plot follows: Frankie Turner, a fiercely intelligent governess who's also a mathematics genius. Her life gets turned upside down when her sister goes missing, forcing her to enter the glamorous yet dangerous world of London's high society.
Then we have Jasper Jones; the owner of a high-stakes gambling den—and someone Frankie never expected to need. When the two are forced to work together to uncover a shady scheme ... oh my God, guys, the tension? Their chemistry? Ugh made me fall in love even more and there's a certain scene between them that once again brought Bridgerton feels to me. I couldn't get enough!

Now moving onto the narration, let's just say beautiful voices also play a part in enjoying a book as well as being fast paced of course everything was 😍🤌🏻
I really enjoyed this book and I can't wait for the third read.

Thanks to Hachette Audio and NetGalley for the ALC

Loved! We met Frankie in the first book and I automatically needed to know more about her! And she didn’t disappoint in her own book.

Frankie has become a “governess” for a wealthy gaming hell owner Jasper’s niece. She doesn’t know that much about being a governess but she is doing this for The Dove. The Dove is looking for Frankie’s missing sister while Frankie is trying to figure out if Jasper has any connection to the network of men who keep compromising women in order to get their dowry.

I liked book one of this series. I loved book two. Never Gamble Your Heart was a big step up from a newer historical romance author and gives me hope for the genre!

We open this book as Frankie Turner begins work for gaming hell mogul, Jasper Jones, as governess to his niece. Frankie is working for the mysterious woman named "The Dove" to help untangle a dowry theft scheme in exchange for The Dove's help to find her missing sister and Jasper Jones's ledgers are critical to Frankie's mission. Jasper suspects that something is up with his new governess, especially when she teaches his niece how to count cards. So when he catches her trying to break into his study, he wants answers. He just doesn't expect that the governess he's hot for is working for a national spy ring posing as educators.

I loved how this book too so many of the tropes I love from classical historical romance and updated them.

Jasper Jones is the classic Man Who Inherits A Child and he has no clue what to do with her. He knows he needs to provide her with things like clothing, shelter and food but he has no concept of what his niece might need in order to be happy. This is one of my favorite tropes in historical romance. Lindsay Lovise updated it a bit by making Jasper's niece, Cecelia, a more active character in the book than she would have been were this written 30 years ago. Jasper is also the self-made man who was popularized by Lisa Kleypas– he even owns a gaming hell– but again the trope is more modern because we see him interact with the aristocracy on their turf. We see how they treat him as "less than" which we wouldn't see in historicals of old.

We have seen the spinster governess a million times in historical romance. What I loved about Frankie's character is that she is both part of the aristocracy and apart from them. She is the granddaughter of a baron, she had four seasons on the Marriage Mart, but she didn't find a husband. At the beginning of the novel, we're led to believe this is because she is too plain to have attracted notice, but by the end we realize that a big reason why Frankie never married is that her mother emotionally beat her down until Frankie didn't believe anyone would want to marry her. She faded into the wallpaper more and more each time her mother berated her for existing. Frankie is also a brilliant mathematician. I love a woman in a historical who has an interesting job and Frankie delivered!

I figured out who the culprit in the Dowry Theft plot was pretty quickly– I've been reading historical romance for over 20 years and there are very few plots I haven't read at this point. But I didn't guess the "why" behind it. That was a lovely surprise and is so timely for the dumpster fire world we live in today. Like I always say, historical romance is about the time in which it is written, not the time in which it is set. Lindsay Lovise is definitely commenting on the conservative swing we're all living through.

I really enjoyed this book. I hope Lindsay Lovise continues to churn out historical romances like this for years to come. Can't wait for book three!

Lindsay Lovise's Never Gamble Your Heart is the second book in her Secret Society of Governess Spies book. I haven't read the first book in this series, but I had no trouble following this clever, fast moving tale of secrets and spies. I'm definitely going back to find Never Blow a Kiss as soon as possible!

This is a fun, exciting, and unique historical romance with tons of action and a great mystery.

The audio version of Never Gamble Your Heart is beautifully performed by Ella Lynch and Rupert Channing. These two do a marvelous job with this exciting tale!

Frankie piqued my interest in book 1 and she’s great here too. She’s neurodivergent coded and these rivals to lovers worked well together, but it was hard to suspend belief a few times, like that someone as shrewd as Jasper wouldn’t have confronted Frankie sooner.
The anachronisms made me roll my eyes and I actually snorted when a character referred to themselves as living in Victorian times. And I started counting the times I read “Holy Queen V”. I was disappointed the epilogue only set up the next book and the MCs didn’t appear, so the ending felt rushed.

It’s fast paced with likable main characters and the mystery plot caught my interest. It was a little too insta lust for me and the supporting characters were caricatures, but I’m on board for the next book.

"From the moment you walked into my life you have frustrated me, irritated me, and pulled me into one harebrained scheme after another. And yet I find myself waking each morning with a smile on my face, anxious to hear what you will say next."

I loved this! I knew going into it I would, because Lindsay Lovise's debut, Never Blow A Kiss was great as well

Frankie Turner is working in the household of Jasper Jones, notorious rake and gambling hell owner, as governess to his niece. But she is also there as a spy- recently there have been a string of marriages between compromised young women and fortune-less lords. The only connection between the marriages that mathematical genius Frankie can find is that the grooms are all members at Rockfords, Jones's club.

I loved how the relationship between Frankie and Jasper quietly went from hostile to companionable. At first Jasper doesn't know what to make of Frankie- she's not a society miss, simpering in his presence and only saying the right things. He quickly comes to realize that her quirks are what make her so unique. Frankie for her part is distrustful before she even meets Jasper- he has a reputation as a coldhearted scoundrel, which she comes to discover is far from the truth.

I loved once these two actually started working together! They were both so quick to jump to the other's defence among the ton, where neither of them quite fit in. I also loved how Jasper put up zero internal fight once he began to fall for Frankie. We didn't have to sit through him pushing her away or trying to act distantly. He just wholeheartedly fell and told her so, point blank.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publishing team for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The first book I’ve read by the author & it won’t be the last. I was also lucky enough to get the audio book version too so I half listened & half read the book. I loved how the narrator brought the characters alive. An enjoyable book with strong characters & a fast paced story. I thoroughly enjoyed Jasper & Frankie’s journey to a HEA. I also enjoyed finding more out about The Dove & look forward to her story

Frankie Turner is trying to find her little sister. She has gone missing. She has become a governess for Jasper Jones' niece. The dove has requested she look into the rakes books. He owns a gambling hall and they need to find out if he is involved with the dowry plot.

I really loved this book. Historical romance, mystery and spice. The narration was fantastic with two points of views of Frankie & Jasper. The writing hooked me right away and I had to finish the book immediately. I can't wait to see what else the author writes.

Another wonderful installment in the Secret Society of Governess Spies series! If there is a histrom with a governess or a gambling hell, count me in! Lovise weaves tales full of humor, swoon, and intrigue that keep the reader captivated and rooting for the characters from start to finish.

What I appreciate about Lovise’s histroms is how they are the perfect place for readers looking to venture into the dazzling world historical romance. They provide discussions on class, societal expectations and roles, as well as political intrigue. The dialogue is accessible and the writing is very engaging, so newer histrom readers are able to readily connect with the story.

The dual narration was an absolute delight! I was so glad to see Ella and Rupert were back to narrate the second installment in this series as they did such a superb job with the Never Blow a Kiss.

I’m looking forward to Ivy’s book and learning more about The Dove!

I really enjoyed this story. It was a good mix of romance and mystery. The author did a good job of making both Lord Jasper and Lady Frankie enterprising and hardworking. Frankie was a governess who came to care for Lord Jasper's niece Cecilia, but it was clear from the beginning she wasn't the run-of-the mill governess. Their familial relationship created a situation where they had to make their own way in society. It endeared them to me because they learned to look beyond the superficial. She had an independent streak and she wasn't exactly conventional. The two adults coupled with a mischievous niece made for an entertaining book.
It must have been hard for women like Frankie to live in an era where they had to play down their intelligence and seek husbands instead. Plus, I am convinced that Frankie was neurodivergent, so that would be an additional quality to hope a husband would be accepting of.

This book was had action, found family and of course, love. What a good read.

Never Gamble Your Heart by Lindsay Lovise
Narrated by Ella Lynch and Rupert Channing

I love it when an audiobook features both a female and a male voice narrating the story. It is so much more engaging than having just one narrator. Even though this is the second book in the "Secret Society of Governess Spies" series, I can confirm that it works well as a standalone read. The narration is performed by Ella Lynch and Rupert Channing, each taking on the perspective of the characters in their respective chapters. They both did a fantastic job with emotional expression and timing.

Frankie Turner loves mathematics above all else, but when her younger sister goes missing, she seeks help from a mysterious figure called The Dove. Frankie becomes a governess, and The Dove tasks her with uncovering the identities of dowry thieves—men who compromise young ladies to gain access to their dowries. In exchange for her help, Frankie hopes to learn more about her missing sister.

Jasper Jones is the notorious owner of Rockford, a gambling club for men in London. He has recently become the guardian of his fifteen-year-old niece, Cecelia. As he settles into this new role, Jasper begins to suspect that his new governess may have ulterior motives for being in his household.

The story unfolds with drama, deception, chemistry, and mystery.

My first book of the year. This is the 2nd in a series about governess spies and it is just as clever as the first. The Dove, who I presume will have the last book, runs an employement agency for governesses, and they become spies. Frankie is trying to find her sister who has disappeared and the Dove places her in the house of Jasper Jones who needs help with his niece. There has been a string of well dowered girls becoming compromised into marriage. All of the grooms belong to a gambling club owned by Jones, so Frankie must see if he is a part of the scheme.
Frankie is a mathematical genius who is very different from a typical debutante and her mother constantly denigrate her, so she thinks she is unmarriageable. Jones has pulled himself up from the lower class to become a rich club owner, but he knows he will never be accepted by his customers.
When his brother dies and he becomes guardian to his niece he is out of his depth, and when Frankie becomes governess they clash constantly. It is
quite adorable.
There is a a lot of humor and excellent banter, as well as a very clever mystery.
I am already looking forward to the next book.

Scheme upon scheme, that is the theme! I love watching Frankie play Jasper like a fiddle! 🤭
I truly enjoyed Lindsay Lovise’s debut novel and she is only improving in this second addition. I am absolutely loving Jasper’s worldly inelegance paired with Frankie’s delightful quirks and brilliance. Her lack of belief in her own likability actually adds to her charm. She is at once the most likeable character while simultaneously being utterly blind to it. This story packs in so much that is hard to know where to start. The mystery is incredibly compelling, the love story all encompassing. That is something so unbearably compelling in a seemingly unlovable character, not only finding a match, but becoming another’s entire world. The characters that Lovise has created deeply resonate and burrow into your heart. I found myself on tenterhooks awaiting each new revelation. To know how much i enjoyed this book, I need only look back through my notes and see such thoughts as… “scheming little minx”, “he is such a softie”, ‘her mother is horrible”, “he is not only a good man, but the best of men” and my favorite, “men are such idiots”. Truly, I could not have had a more enjoyable time.

The narration provided by Ella Lynch & Rupert Channing was a delight. Both of these narrators are new to me and I was impressed with how suited they were to historical romance. There is a certain flow to historical that needs a bit of elegance which was done well here. I am always impressed with the work coming from Forever and Hachette Audio. It is truly like a movie of the mind.

This book was delightful! A historical romance with a mystery plot woven in.

Thank you to Forever for the complimentary advanced copy.

Our heroine Frankie Turner will do anything to find her missing sister, even if that means working as a governess in the home of Jasper Rockford - the most notorious gaming hell owner in London. All she has to do is get access to his ledgers and get out.

Jasper is a cunning rake and quite taken aback when the straightforward governess puts him in his place. (Frankie is autistic and it was wonderful to see this representation for a heroine in a historical romance.) The banter between the two of them is delicious and had me laughing out loud at several points. While there is a dastardly plot at play, the story itself is a humorous romp that reminds me of historical romance from the early 2000s with 2020s feminism.

I had a great time reading this book and highly recommend if you're looking for a funny romance with a light mystery. This is my first Lindsay Lovise but it certainly won't be my last!

Frankie Turner will spy for the Dove, owner of Perdita's Governess Agency, in exchange for finding her sister. She is sent to spy on Jasper Jones, working as his niece's governess. Frankie is outspoken, quirky and a brilliant mathematician. Young debutantes, also outspoken with large dowries, are being threatened into hasty marriages with older gentlemen who lost their fortunes. The gentlemen are known as the Dowry Thieves. Jasper Jones is a self-made man, owner of Rockford's, a high class gaming hell. All clues to the Dowry Thieves, lead to Rockford's. Frankie must find proof of Jasper's innocence or guilt. After she proves Jasper's innocence, they work together with interference from his fifteen year old niece, to identify the ringleader. Murder, kidnapping and decit, keep Frankie and Jasper looking for answers.

A Unique Regency Spy Romance

“Never Gamble Your Heart” by Lindsay Lovise is a delightful blend of espionage, romance, and wit. Despite being the second book in the "Secret Society of Governess Spies" series, it stands strong on its own and left me eager to read the first.

This novel feels like Gatsby’s long-lost niece stumbled into Regency-era London, complete with glittering high society and dangerous intrigue. Frankie, the protagonist, is a refreshingly unique governess who is undeniably neurodivergent. Her ability to see mathematical patterns and connections others miss—and her struggles with social cues—are traits I found deeply relatable and beautifully portrayed.

The story follows Frankie as she navigates her family’s financial turmoil, her younger sister’s mysterious disappearance, and her role in high-stakes spy missions. Frankie’s journey from being a social outlier to embracing her strengths is both heartfelt and empowering. Plus, there’s plenty of drama, romance, and clever characters to keep readers hooked.

Lovise has crafted an enthralling blend of historical romance and espionage with a heroine you can’t help but root for. Highly recommend for fans of clever, unconventional leads and Regency-era adventures!

~A huge thank you to both NetGalley, Forever (Grand Central Publishing), and to the author herself for the advanced copy of this book! Review is completely my own thoughts and opinions.~

I loved this book!

The publisher sent me a physical copy of this one so I wanted to read and listen in tandem. (Hello British accents!) It was just as fun as I imagined it would be.
I enjoy regency romance but adore stories of the other classes in society and jump at the opportunity to read about women in STEM. Which is why Frankie’s mathematical mind was the pièce de résistance in a list of fantastic tropes brought forth in this plot. Seriously, the list of tropes included enemies to lovers, a who done it mystery, rake/ spinster pairing, he falls first love story, and single father romance elements.
Which is why I highly recommend this for anyone that enjoys regency romances, STEMinist romances, cozy mysteries, and British accents.

Audiobook review- 5/5 stars. This book was entertaining from start to finish. Excellent characters, plot/storyline and swoonworthy romance. I wish I could read more books just like this one. I went into this one blind and didn’t realize there is a bit of mystery involved which I was happy to discover. Lastly and most importantly, I loved the female empowerment, especially in a time in history where women were only as good as their dowry. Narrators were perfect and nailed their characters.

Never Gamble Your Heart is a regency romp with heart and swagger.

The chemistry between Frankie, whip smart, socially awkward governess and Jasper, a gambling den owner made for a very entertaining read. Add in some clumsy espionage and a dash of murder and you have the perfect escapist regency read.

Perfect for fans of Bridgerton, Never Gamble is second in a series, but can be read as a standalone. I highly recommend enjoying it as an audiobook. The narration was top quality, and the clipped British accents added an extra dimension to the cast of characters.

Thank you Hachette Audio for a complementary copy of this book. Opinions expressed are my own.

This was my first ARC read, and I was really looking forward to it. I had high hopes for this book, based on its action-packed plot and loveable protagonist; however, it ultimately fell short because of undeveloped dialogue, clunky exposition, sudden, unmotivated character decisions, and incomplete editing.

The concept of the series is that some governesses act as spies in noble households for an organisation who holds the rich accountable for their actions. The concept of this book is a mathematics-genius governess works for the owner of a gambling den to spy on the wealthy and find who has abducted her sister (not to spoil, but you'll know it one chapter in--they fall in love).

I'll start with the good: I really liked having a FML in glasses who is neurospicy-coded! Frankie was honest, awkward, brilliant, and loveable. A well-imagined female lead who I was cheering for. The plot also had some good twists and turns, involving political intrigue and murder.

Now the bad: I know that ARCs are by their nature not-quite-ready for publication, but this book felt quite unfinished. From the impenetrable exposition-dump on the series concept in the second chapter, to the insta-lust between romantic leads, to heavy handed themes (I agreed with the feminism and anti-classism, but it was mostly tell instead of show), this book hasn't quite smoothed out its rough edges. It felt like a good book in the making, thwarted by lack of proper cutting down and editing.

This is probably most evident in the book's use of dialogue. An example of the way the dialogue felt only partially developed:
"That makes sense." "It does? I mean, of course it does!"
(This feels like something out of a kid's cartoon, not a romance novel.) I also disliked "Holy Queen V!" as an expletive; it felt really awkward throughout.

I love Victorian-era romance and I liked some of the characters, but this book fell short for me.
