Monsignor Philip Hughes (1895-1967) was a Roman Catholic priest and Catholic ecclesiastical historian. He taught post-graduate courses at the University of Notre Dame.

Really not very impressed at all. Good for some of the facts, but much too liberal to be a good understanding of the facts. Doesn't get deep enough into the philosophical or theological implications or meanings of the events. Look further for better history.

Some of the beginning of this book dragged because of the seemingly endless procession of names. This may be due to my ignorance and the limitations of a shorter history of the church. Still, the analysis of the period from the Renaissance to modern times was enlightening and penetrating. I especially appreciated the treatment of Jansenism which demonstrated the guile of its leaders who would agree and submit only to quibble about what that really meant.

Es una síntesis detallada de la historia de la iglesia católica, yo lo encuentro francamente tendencioso, el lenguaje es claramente de alguien que pertenece a la iglesia, se refiere a los laicos de manera despectiva en varias ocasiones, y omite notoriamente la gran mayoría de los crímenes del cristianismo. Se puede sentir en su prosa el desprecio por el resto de los ateos y casi las condenas por herejía.
