A poignant and laugh-out-loud memoir about Ted, who at 87 gets his first allotment and persuades his reluctant daughter and son-in-law to help him cultivate it.
What effervescent, sparkling writing! Like good gardening, it seems effortless, but produces such wonderful colourful characters/veg/flowers. It is a journal, but it doesn't feel constrained by any sense of obligation to stick to fact, and can take wings whenever it pleases. Hence the touching and doomed romance. Thank you so much for writing it, Mandy!
Anyone who has ever gardened or cared for a parent will find much to enjoy in Mandy Sutter’s beautifully written memoir about her father’s allotment and the last ten years of his life. I loved it and was quietly bereft when it came to an end.
I really loved this book. It's written with such honesty about the ups and downs of Mandy Sutter's relationship with her elderly dad as they embark on tending an allotment together, with doughty support from Mr MS and Dog MS.
Ted the Shed is by turns extremely funny and very poignant. For readers interesting in allotmenteering there's lots of invaluable advice in the book too, but I recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone looking for a good, unpretentious real-life story.
By the way there is romance on the allotment, not (no spoilers) not as you might expect it!
Ted the Shed is a delightful and easy read. I thoroughly enjoyed it and can't remember reading a book so quickly!
You don't have to be interested in gardening to share the love and humour... though after reading it you might be tempted to pull up a few weeds or plant some seeds :)
Very touching story of cherishing our last days with beloved family ❤️. The authenticity of the writing welcomes the reader to participate as a family member- Thank you MS
