The Northern Lights in His Eyes

Rate this book
When Garvin Haverton lost his husband, he lost himself. Unable to bear the reminders of their love, he left his friends in Los Angeles for the remote Alaskan wilderness, cut ties with his old life, and started over.
Model William Moreau has let Garvin hide for long enough. He misses his friendship, and he has to know if the spark he felt between them could ignite the love of a lifetime. So he packs a bag, books a flight, rents a car… and almost gets himself killed in a blizzard.
When William shows up half-frozen, Garvin is furious. Unlike William, he doesn't need to be rescued. He has a life in new friends, a dog, a job. But he can't kick William out into the cold, and it doesn't take many long, cold Alaskan nights before he realizes that he may have a life, but he hasn't moved on. He could do that with William. The chemistry between them could heat his little cabin all on its own. But William's life is in LA, and Garvin can't go back. Is their unlooked-for romance doomed from the start?

Garvin (my brain kept reading this as Gavin) had an epic love with his beloved, John, but “…a defect in John’s brain that had been there since birth had taken him away” and this left left a gaping wound. He tried for five years to keep going in their home of Los Angeles and it just wasn’t working. “I left because I couldn’t take it anymore. John had been gone five years, and I wasn’t healing. John was everywhere – in the place where I lived, in the things I was surrounded by.” That included their friends. So, finally, Garvin left LA for Alaska and basically cut off anything to do with his former life.
One of those pieces of his former life was William, a beautiful supermodel and good friend to both John and Garvin. I felt bad for William because not only do his friends (and Garvin) think he doesn’t think. “Typical William. He floundered his way into a situation, made all the wrong decisions, and hoped he’d come out all right.” What makes it worse is William himself thinks that about himself. “But maybe that was what he really was – some fuckup who would never be anything beyond his looks: pretty but stupid.” Except he isn’t. He misses John and Garvin. He can’t do anything about John, but he heads to Alaska to track down Garvin. Unfortunately, he nearly dies in the attempt and is only saved at the last minute when he finds Garvin’s cabin. Garvin is unhappy, to say the least, to see him but William is pissed too. “Did you figure that we just stopped existing…or maybe we didn’t matter to you? Or was it John’s memory that didn’t matter to you?”
Since they are snowbound, Garvin has to make the best of it. William wants him as a friend and someone to love while still respecting John’s memory. So the two of them start to reconnect (with attitude from Garvin) as friends. It was somewhat annoying how Garvin treated William as incompetent sometimes, especially when they have to go out on a winter rescue at a mining camp, then again when they are returning to the mining camp for documentation. “Maybe he was stupid for bringing William along…”. He didn’t want to bring William at all and I was happy that William was instrumental.
There is a plot line involving the mining camp, one that is all too familiar in real life. I liked seeing Garvin begin to reclaim his life, mainly thanks to William. The descriptions and trials of the Alaskan winter were so interesting.

This was a sweet second chance mixed with new love kind of story and it was easy to root for Garvin and William! It’s really a combination of strong emotions, sweet moments with a bit of mystery thrown in!

After the unexpected loss of his husband Garvin moved away from LA to try to rebuild his life in a small cabin in Alaska. He walked away from everything from that life including his friends, which includes William. William is a model who is definitely in demand even though he’s starting to get a little older and he’s realized that he misses his friend Garvin. He’s had feelings for him for some time and decides he’s had enough, that it’s time to do something about it. He’s not exactly prepared but that doesn’t stop him from making the trip to Alaska, in the middle of the snowy winter to try to take on the elements to find Garvin.

Again, I really liked these two and found myself rooting for them right from the start. Garvin is shocked when William shows up on his doorstep, well on his way to freezing to death, but it doesn’t take long for William to open up and show Garvin what he really feels for him. It takes a bit longer for Garvin, he’s had a very difficult time getting over John’s death and moving on with his life. He thinks he’s found that in Alaska, but he carries a sadness with him and with William around he starts to feel happiness again.

I liked their process of reconnecting, both as friends and then moving into more. It’s clear that William has had feelings for Garvin for a while and I loved seeing him going after what he wanted. I also wanted to see Garvin happy and loved that it’s William that brings that back to his life. He really deserves to find love again and these two fit together so well, it just felt natural and meant to be. I loved this Alaskan community, how they embrace each other and work together and Garvin and William fit in perfectly. Overall, I really enjoyed their story and it made my heart happy.

Thoughts: It’s rare that a setting is so well done that it comes across almost as a character in and of itself. This story is one of those rare occurrences. Set in a small village in the Alaskan wilderness, the descriptions are so vivid that you can really picture it. Especially when the artist friend Devon describes the way the light plays off the snow and how it’s not all white. I don’t believe I’ve ever read a description so beautifully done. Kudos to the author for this.

Then there’s the bits about the cold and how dangerous it is and how dehydrating. I actually laughed at the one point where Garvin wants to go out the next day because it might actually get up to freezing and be nice for an outing.

Finally, there are the characters. Garvin is perfectly flawed in that he buried himself in his grief and hid away from those who cared about him. Enter William, a friend who wants to be more, but he has to track down Garvin and convince him to join the living. Then there are the friends at the general store and how everyone helps everyone. And there’s a little bit of danger with the explosion, the avalanche, the miners… and it’s amazing how William jumps in to help. The pull between the two men is well-done and their issues give them conflict. And the HEA ending satisfied.

Recommended.

Garvin and William find the truth ! Willow Lake, 70 miles north of Anchorage.

Garvin, lost husband, left L.A. for remote Alaska, new life made, a cabin and a dog, Sasha, white Samoyed.
William, a blonde haired model, packs up, flies and drives in a blizzard to get to his old friend.

On his way back from getting groceries on his snowmobile, Sasha running along side. They make it home, but had not seen any cars the police were asking about. Once inside, Sasha is alert, at the front door, he finds a man half frozen.

Once inside he recognized that face ! William had come to let his friend know that he missed him and to tell him a secret.

It's tense for a bit, but William gets his message across, as he fits in here and gets along with everyone. Garvin realizes he misjudged the handsome model, William.

The two have fun, with meals, hikes, and go to the town trading post. They end up helping rescue operations from the avalanche. We see the mining issues arise, our men are getting along great, super hot sex is passionate and sizzling, plus they are having deep conversations and feelings are laid on the table.

A marvelous tale and M/M romance, with an awesome epilogue.

Another terrific story from awesome writer Andrew Grey.

ENJOY !

The Northern Lights in his Eyes combines some of my favourite things - a second chance romance, forced proximity and just a hint of danger... I really like the way William stormed into Garvin's life and made himself known. I also like the way he tries to integrate into the Alaskan town and shows that he's in for the long haul. Garvin has been hiding rather than healing and William shakes up his life and really gives him the chance to live a new life.

This book was sweet, steamy and well written and just the right length to give us a well rounded story

I loved this story! I've always wanted to go to Alaska.

It's hard to lose a loved one. Garvin decided to move to Alaska to get away from the places and things that brought all the memories back every day. Then, a surprise visit by William to his cabin in the woods and Garvin begins a new look on life and happiness he never thought would ever happen. Lots of tears, but worth every word read. THANK YOU ANDREW! ENJOY!

Bitter Cold, a Dog & a Best Friend!!

Lots of challenges await William as he arrives unannounced at his friend Garvin’s cabin in Alaska. Enjoy how Garvin and William explore their growing sexual attraction, interact with the small community, and share the bed with Garvin’s dog Sasha, except during steamier moments!!!

To Silly Too Read

Really not worth reading. If a person does not have enough sense to not go hiking in 10 below weather then I do not of interest in their story.

This is book 2 in this series but works fine as a standalone, however you meet some of the mentioned characters and places in that one and it's awesome so why not? Lol

I will be honest and say I had this as a 4 until halfway mark.
I just felt like William's appearance on Garvin's doorstep in the cold and as long as it seemed I felt he should've been in worse shape. ( not a spoiler this is basically in the blurb) but as in most Andrew Grey books you can't help but fall in love with the characters. Their slow burn and Garvin trying so hard not to give in to his feelings... won me.
Another thin I loved....all the characters...and the setting.
I also loved the angst that just made Garvin's personality. And ther is also some suspense...still not sold I saved the best for last. A cute big, liveable dog and William isn't a dog person.
Still not sold?
If you love second chances, friends to lovers, hurt/comfort, beautiful settings, close friends, small towns, slow burn, cute dogs, suspense and a HEA... go get it!
