Geekrotica #1

The Lumberfox

Rate this book
Caught in Atlanta's Snowjam 2014, self-confessed geek Tara is rear-ended by the hottest guy she's ever met. Ryon is a beer brewer and restauranteur who fits the bill of what Tara and her friends call a "lumberfox": sartorial lumberjack style, cultivated facial hair, tattoos, and specialized tastes. When he invites Tara to spend the snowstorm in his nearby condo, she takes a gamble and slogs through the Hothlike blizzard, where she learns that a man who takes that much time with his mustache knows exactly what to do with his mouth.

Erotic novella set during the Snowjam in Atlanta in 2014 features Tara, curvy Star Wars geek and Ryon, the aforementioned hottie lumberfox. It was recommended to me by friends, and I was happy to read it.

The Good, The Bad and Everything In Between
-Kindle Unlimited: I got it free with my subscription, or it’s only 99 pennies.
-novella length (49 pgs): very quick read, took me a couple of hours to get through. Good inbetween kind of read.
-likeable leads: Tara works for the Cartoon Network, Ryon is a bearded, tattooed, hot chef and brewer. They’re both drawn relatively well for such a short story, so I liked that we know something more than just how they gasp during sex. Speaking of...
-hot sex with humor: this book is very clear from the beginning that it’s erotica, so the sex is the focal point. Ms. Lovelace manages to bring humor blended with sexiness to the smutty times, and I always appreciate a good Stars Wars reference.
-Mostly sex, but...: There was chemistry between these characters that is not just about the sex. I mean, yes, they got down to business in relatively short order, and in a slightly fantastical way, but that’s the point, it’s a fantasy, so you go with it. I will say, Ryon calling out Tara for using humor to diffuse tension was cute and hinted at more. I would have liked to see them navigating an actual relationship. But the story has a HFN ending that was satisfying enough.

The Bottom Line
A tasty little morsel that’s worth the quick read, especially if you like geeky love.

A nice hot little read.

Had to admit to having to google some of the geekier Star Wars things.

Well developed characters that you connect to, which is nothing short of genius given the length. Great chemistry between Ryon and Tara.

A lovely, funny, hot enjoyable read.

oh, and my Ryon!

If you're into nerds having sex (which I, very selfishly, am), you're gonna love this. I am also, very selfishly, into beards, tattoos, Star Wars, wine, Nutella in exotic locations, women in nothing but too-big men's button-downs, jokes at awkward moments, and any excuse to take your clothes off. It made me giggle and squirm, and what more can you ask for?

He brews beer and is a chef. And is totally gorgeous and has tattoos. And has a hipster mustache and a sexy, well-groomed beard. And is perfect in bed, has a stylish condo, and is thoughtful and witty.

This is short, has a lot of quotes from Star Wars (hence the Geek), has a lot of sex (hence the erotica), and tries to squeeze in a bit of romance, too. Which I liked.

Sexy quick story.

When Ava Lovelace's geeky erotica novella The Lumberfox opens, it's winter in Atlanta and it's snowing. Hard. And if you've ever been anywhere near the South when it decides to snow hard, you pretty much know that we're, well, ill-equipped to deal. So it's no surprise when heroine Tara and hero Ryon get into a fender bender. And if it's a little more surprising that Ryon turns out to live nearby and Tara agrees to go home with him, well, all is forgiven by the end of this smoking hot and utterly charming novella of geek romance gone wild.

Ryon Brubaker, our foxy lumberjack type hipster geek, is a brewmaster and executive chef. Tara, our determined geek girl, is a web designer for Cartoon Network. When Ryon rear-ends her in the middle of a snowstorm and their sexual chemistry is immediately apparent, he wisely points out that going home with him to crème brûlée and a warm fire would be infinitely more comfortable than Tara spending the night in her car once she inevitably runs out of gas in the awful traffic. So she demands that he talk to her mom and give her his driver's license number over the phone, an intelligent and creative way of getting around what otherwise might have seemed an abrupt and dangerous choice on the part of the heroine.

Sometimes it seems like a book has been written just for you and that's totally how I felt about this one so I'm not sure how objective I can really be. The protagonists make constant inside joke geek references on everything from Star Wars to Firefly to Hunger Games. Since I met my husband playing Dungeons & Dragons, this was super amusing to me, but to a non-geek might be a little confusing. The mutual appreciation for geek culture is an important plot point here though because it goes a long way toward explaining the characters' immediate affinity for one another. Bonding happens fast between Browncoats.

What follows is some of the hottest and most respectful sex I've ever seen in pixels. I counted up the times Ryon asks Tara's permission to continue or checks in to be sure she's still on board and it ended up being fourteen, I think. Each one is slightly different and I don't want to give the sense that it gets repetitive because it totally doesn't. It just takes this encounter, which could have been stock fantasy material, and makes it simultaneously more interesting and much hotter. Oh, and when I say this novella is smoking hot, I mean really, really hot. This is erotica and it's pretty explicit. And so, so good.

And, speaking of hot, oh gawd, the FOOD. Ryon brews beer and cooks and bakes for a living. Over the course of the story, Tara is offered roasted chicken with veggies, chocolate truffles, Nutella and strawberries, waffles, hot cocoa, grilled cheese, home-brewed beer and crème brûlée. Gracious, what woman wouldn't fall head over heels? There are also a couple of food-related metaphors including the sentence, "But he didn't make a move for the door--just looked at her like she was a steak dripping with butter." So as a bonus, here's my favorite recipe for steak dripping with butter.

There are supposed to be three of these Geekrotica novellas in the series. The second, The Superfox, wasn't my cup of tea, but the third one can probably be expected by the end of the summer once Ava Lovelace (aka Delilah Dawson) is finished with some other projects. I think it's safe to say that about an hour after it's available, I'll have already finished it. Can't wait!

I read this story in one sitting, and I can honestly say that I have never enjoyed erotica more. Here are my top five reasons:

1. It's GEEKROTICA! What is not to love about Star Wars and Pride and Prejudice jokes mixed with sweet romance and steamy sex?
2. The characters. Tara and Ryon are round (and hard, but that's another point...) characters that Ms. Ava Lovelace managed to develop in a few short pages. It is evident that they have lives outside the story, pasts that long for exploration, and personalities that make you fall in love with them as quickly as they fall in love with each other.
3. Urgency. I said I read it in one sitting, right? Well, that's not because it's short (it is pretty short - approximately 46 pages) but because it is written with such a sense of urgency that I couldn't wait to see what happened next and how the story would play out.
4a.The consent. I've read erotica before, but I have found that sometimes (not always, of course) there is not clear consent between the characters. One might push a little *too* hard to get the other in the sack. Not with this one. There is clear and obvious consent, which makes the sex all that much better, I think.
4b. The sex. Whoo-eeee... *fans self* It's hot but not over the top. It doesn't try too hard to be sexy; it just is.
5. The sweetness. What girl doesn't want the man of her dreams to romance her? Just like Tara, I love losing myself in a sweet romance. This was perfect.

I did not Wookiee out on this one, and I cannot wait to read the next one.

This is a very short story, but fun and quirky, and if you are a Star Wars geek you'll probably appreciate this more than me.

Well, this was different. And I truly didn’t know what to expect but found myself enjoying this quirky short story from the talented Ms. Dawson, who, under the pen-name of Ava Lovelace, is exploring a new-to-her genre. Speaking of genres, ever heard of geekrotica? Cause it’s certainly a first for me!

What did you think K.?

Karina:
I haven't heard of it either, V., and while I consider myself geeky, the majority of cultural references (apart from the obvious ones!) went way over my head. Still, it was funny (especially the vibrator moment), sweet and adorable, and despite the shortness of the story, warmed my cockles. I hear, that Delilah plans on two more stories in this novella format, and I'm looking forward to reading them too. Recommended.

Tara and Ryon’s story begins as he rear-ends her in the middle of a snow storm. Left to choose between staying locked in her car for however long for making her way through the snow to his condo, she of course picks following him to allow him to treat her to a home cooked meal, warmth and hopefully a little action between the sheets.

I picked this story up for a few reasons. 1. It was offered up as a Kindle Unlimited read 2. A few friends were reading it and sharing quotes that had me laughing my ass off and 3. I needed something to break up the serious and emotional reads, and just to have fun. This story delivered and ended up being so much better than just the fun read that I expected.

I nearly expected this story to be so horrible that it would be fantastic, in the way that just made you laugh because of how outlandish it was going to be. In the end though, I actually really enjoyed the story. The humor was there, the chemistry between the two characters remained in place throughout the story and ultimately the author’s writing was good enough that the story was what kept my attention. I went into this book with only one expectation. To laugh. I left it with yet another author who I would not hesitate to read again. Although I don’t expect to get a story that would shred me emotionally, I do know that I’d be thoroughly entertained.

“The Lumberfox” is the fantasy that every geek girl wished they had during the recent Georgia snowpocalypse. It was the perfect size and had just the right amount of teasing–the story wasn’t half-bad either. The erotic elements are sexy and straight forward. Tara, the female character is relatable (especially to this geek girl) and she’s not some annoying dolt who’s there for the ride. She has intelligence and personality. She has insecurities, but they aren’t debilitating or distracting. But most of all, she has awesome sex with an awesome guy.

This short story from Ava Lovelace (an alias of the phenomenal Delilah S. Dawson) is not only hot, but funny as well. The humor adds to the sexy geekiness of the story. Readers won’t be able to put it down and will be left begging for more.

The Amazon self-pubbers will want to watch out. The erotica bar has been set high, and we’re only on level one.

I read this and "The Superfox" and so. FUN! You'll get the most out of them if you're into geeky stuff, but I believe they're truly enjoyable even for the uninitiated.

This one's more sensual than erotic, I think, but there are definitely tingly scenes. The humour and banter are great; and despite the short form, there is actual chemistry between the characters—although it's explored as the story goes. I also appreciate the emphasis on consent.

Quirky short that delivers delightful sensory sexplosion. Recommended.

This is labelled 'Geekrotica' in the title and that's exactly what it is. There's lots of Geek speak and 'rotica combined which results in a fun and naughty little story. If that particular combo appeals to you, hopefully you'll find yourself chuckling at various points along the way as Ryon and Tara engage in smexy times and get to know each other much better. These two know how to take the proverbial lemons (i.e. a blizzard and a car accident) and make sweet lemonade - with extra ice, garnish and more than a dash of humour and heat!

I'm pretty picky about my romances. A lot of the time, I just hate the stereotypical alpha male lead. This novella? It works. Tara is an outright geek. The lumberfox she encounters during the Atlanta blizzard is just as geeky, and also happens to be a tatooed awesome chef and beer brewer. He's got it all going on, complete with a beard that gives "scruffy looking nerdherder" a whole new meaning. Their banter is witty and feels real, and that's what I loved the most. These were my kinds of people and I was happy that they found ways to make each other happy.

I loved this little story and honestly the only thing keeping me from rating it a 5 is that I WANT MORE!!! Ava Lovelace crafted two people so perfect for eachother in such a short amount of time, and although I don't doubt Tara and Ryon will live happily ever after, I sure would love to read the rest of their story. Being a huge star wars fan myself, I totally got all of the references and love the way they helped tell their story. The Lumberfox is funny and sweet, geeky and sexy. Highly recommend!!

Apparently I am in the minority here, but I truly feel that the author was trying SO. HARD. to be trendy that it took away from the storyline. I found entirely too many instances where it seemed that cramming as many geek culture references as possible was more important than actually telling the story. And that makes me a bit sad, because I really wanted to like this book.

This was an okay, short little read. Actually liked the heroine and all the geeky Star Wars references were fun. Unfortunately, it was the hero that was the problem for me. He wasn't an alpha jerk by any means, but he just seemed kind of bland...hum ho. And for being labeled erotica, I didn't really think the sexy was anything to write home about-it was okay.

I guess my mistake was in expecting a plot. And logical sex. Spoiler: If he's wearing a condom, he can't pull out and come all over your back. Which means he either lied to Our Blindfolded Heroine about putting a condom on, or it's just a clumsy mistake.

You may have noticed if you follow my reviews that I’m a huge Delilah S. Dawson fan and absolutely LOVE her steampunk series Blud. Well imagine my surprise when I see her post a new cover image on Facebook including the cover for THE LUMBERFOX. I mean you can’t scroll past that hottie. And that’s when I realized she had an alter ego and this was a series of short sexy stories. Immediate one click.

THE LUMBERFOX is too short, yes, but I enjoyed the hell out of every page, every second and every joke! Tara was trying to get home during a snowstorm, after having purchased her first vibrator ever. The weather turns worst and her car gets rear-ended by probably the hottest guy she’s ever met, Ryon. Ryon might just be my dream man. Curly mustache, flannel shirt with band t-shirt underneath, tats all up and down his arms (and his knuckles). He’s a chef and a brewmaster. Be still my galloping heart!

Instead of getting stuck on the highway, Ryon suggests that they both walk to his apartment just at the next highway exit and wait out the worst of the storm. What follows is just HOT! Ryon knows his way around a womans body, and he’s not afraid to show her what she wants no matter where they are

THE LUMBERFOX is smart and geeky sexiness. It was hot and funny! I wish there were at least 10 of these for me to read back to back because I definitely would. It was too short but only by my greedy standards where I would’ve read more about them. It still wrapped up Tara and Ryon’s story nicely. So if there’s a little bit of geek in you, then you will want to pick this one up!

Now I can only wonder when the third book is coming out. I will have to go stalking!

Favorite quotes:

“…she had a date, and the unassuming white plastic vibrator in her bag looked like the impatient type. That’s why she’d decided to call him Han Solo: he was cocky and looked like he was going to shoot first.”

“Let me get this straight. You want me to put on all your dirty clothes, step out into a snowstorm, and follow a complete stranger to his American Psycho apartment?”

Talk Supe review

Let me first address the obvious before I get to the meat of things. Yes, the cover is like 80's paperback or something, maybe even the 70's, and I HOPE Ava Lovelace would give it a makeover because the dude with the handlebar mustache (maybe it's the lighting but it looks like he has one) isn't cutting the sexy.

On to the plot and the smut! LUMBERFOX is an erotica novella and the first of ALovelace's Geekrotica series. LUMBERFOX is a quick read at 43 pages with a very simple plot and this sexy nooner is packed with smoldering sexy times between Tara and Ryon. There's really nothing much to the story except for these two meeting in the middle of a traffic jam and getting it on like Donkey Kong later. Tara was in a hurry to get home to try her brand-new BoB, which she still got to use later on, and Ryon serendipitously rear-ended her (pun intended!). Ryon's condo unit is conveniently close to where they are and graciously invited Tara for a hot meal (and more) and a warm place to wait out the storm. The funniest moment was when Tara's toy started vibrating as Ryon was checking for damages inside her car. That sure broke the ice between the two and kicked-off their snowstorm sex marathon.

And boy was it hawt! These two could undoubtedly melt the ice outside from their lovin alone. I like the fact that there was no hint of "love" or a budding romance. LUMBERFOX was very straightforward in painting a classic hook-up picture where two consenting adults went after what they wanted. That said, I really didn't feel it was "geek" enough except for Tara's random mentions of geek terms and the need for a safe word confused me as well. The conflict was a little flimsy but understandable, Tara for minute misinterpreted Ryon's aloofness as rejection and due to how they met, the morning after can indeed be awkward. Still, LUMBERFOX was an enjoyable escape, looking forward to the next one.

This review was crossposted from my blog. For the rest of the post (and more!), click here.

I've had this novella hanging out on my TBR for a while. It was free and I downloaded it, but then I never really felt interested enough in the idea to actually read it. But I noticed it sitting there in the queue the other day and, since I had a few hours to kill, I decided to give it a whirl.

I was. . . underwhelmed. The story was sexy enough, I suppose, and the jokes were funny. I like that the idea of geeks being sexy is getting more popular. I'm a geek myself, after all. But overall, I just wasn't drawn into this story. The premise was a little thin, in my opinion, and the characters didn't seem very real to me. I could sort of identify with Tara, though I didn't buy the fact that she would hop out of her car and follow a stranger home for a bunch of random sex, no matter how good looking, and Ryon didn't seem to have much development at all beyond being attractive.

This story was an okay way to kill a little time and provided a few chuckles, but in general, I found it sort of meh.

The Lumberfox by Ava Lovelace – B+ I picked this one up when it was free on promotion and for various reasons I was looking for something short to read so I opened it. Despite the title, it is not a shifter book. It is a quite delightful erotic short. It retails for 99c but I think it’s well worth the money. Geek girl Tara is out in what proves to be a blizzard buying her first vibrator. I was amused she christened her new toy Han Solo because, (wait for it):

“he was cocky and looked like he was going to shoot first.”

I’ve never even seen snow let alone been in a blizzard, but apparently what one does in such situations is leave one’s car on the road until the blizzard ends. When she is (gently) rear-ended by Ryon’s jeep, he gets out of his vehicle to exchange information with her and from there, in a mostly believable way, she ends up in Ryon’s apartment to wait out the blizzard – both of their cars as well as everyone else’s it seems, will wait on the road until the weather is better.
