My life should be perfect. But my stepdaughter wants to destroy it all…
Standing in my bathroom, the luxurious marble tiles cool under my feet, I stare at the test in my trembling hand. The second line is I’m pregnant.
This is all my husband Theo and I have ever wanted, but I didn’t think it was possible. I should be excited, but all I can think about is telling my stepdaughter.
Because Ellie’s always hated me, ever since she realised it was no longer just her and Theo. Now she’s seventeen, beautiful and smart – smart enough to see through me. And if Ellie decided to uncover my secrets, it wouldn’t be just my marriage at stake… it would be my life.
But I’ve been so careful burying my past. There’s no way she could learn the truth. I know stress isn’t good for the baby, so I force myself to relax.
Until one day I find a packet of tablets tucked inside Ellie’s bag. My head spins – she’s made it clear she wants me gone but I never imagined she would try to harm my baby. I know I can’t tell Theo. She would only deny it to her beloved daddy, fluttering her lashes like she always does.
My beautiful home has become a prison, my husband feels like a stranger. But all I know is that this precious life inside me is more than I deserve – and there’s nothing I won’t do to protect it…
Teri has lived in France, Canada, Australia and England at more addresses than she can count, acquiring three degrees, a selection of passports and a silly name along the way. Past careers have included scientist, lawyer, optometrist, and, in England, various jobs in schools, libraries and an audiobook charity. The footpaths and canal ways of the Buckinghamshire Chilterns where she now lives inspired much of the setting of Slated. She hates broccoli, likes cats, and has finally worked out what she wants to do when she grows up.

3 stars feels too mean but 4 stars feels to much so this is a 3.5 rounded down! I really enjoyed the ending and the second half of the book but it was a slow burner for sure!
Holy cow…this book sounded so good, and I was lucky to be invited on the book tour for it! I thought this was going to be a decent popcorn thriller. Turns out, I was wrong - it was actually an original and deep psychological thriller.
Rowan is our protagonist. She’s 42 years old, a former foster child turned career woman, and a stepmother. She’s married to fifty-year-old Theo, who works in the technology sector and has a seventeen-year-old daughter named Ellie from his first marriage. Ellie’s biological mother walked out on them soon after the birth, and was never seen again.
Ellie is a VERY bright girl, perhaps too smart for her own good. She is also very calculating, manipulative and angry - normal teenage girl angry, but also angry at her mother for leaving her, and angry she now has a stepmother who she can’t stand. This anger comes out in “pranks” she plays with her father’s invention: Vera.
Vera is like Alexa, but fully integrated into the home. It can make your house a smart home and more with just one program. Ellie has easily figured out how to hack into the system her father built, and has fun locking Rowan out of the house, turning on and off lights, playing music, etc. Rowan is worried; what if Ellie’s bad behavior intensifies? Then something happens that takes her worry to panic - she is pregnant, and she’s terrified of how Ellie will react to the news.
There is SO MUCH MORE to this story, but you’ll want to go into this not knowing much but the synopsis. Rowan is a slightly unreliable character, as her pregnancy (and her past) gives her severe insomnia and anxiety, but I thought all of the characters were written well, except for Theo - I wish we could have heard more of what was happening in his head, but that’s my only minor complaint about this book. Otherwise, it was fresh, unique and the ending was both shocking and heartwarming. 4.5 stars, rounded up!
(Thank you to Bookouture for the ARC and including me in this book tour. The Stepdaughter’s Lie is slated to be released on July 29, 2024.)
First, I wanted to say that even if it’s surprising I actually really liked Ellie and reading from her POV.
This thriller was a page turner, I couldn’t put it down and I just wanted to figure out the truth. And I have to admit I had it all wrong. With its technology aspect this book has a slightly creepy setting, living in a house that knows and controls everything sounds kind of crazy!
I have mixed feelings about Rowan, she annoyed me at some points and I totally understand that it was because of everything that happened in her past so her present actions are understandable.
This was so well written and easy to read.
Thank you Teri Terry, Bookouture & NetGalley for an e-ARC copy.
I really enjoyed this book! It definitely did not take the turn that I expected it to even tho I kinda guessed the twist. A step mom is doing her best, working, being a wife and being a step mother to a 17 year old who lost her mom when she ran away when Ellie was just a baby. Theo and Rowan had been married for a few years and she thought given her age and her past that she would never have a baby but she finds out she’s pregnant. Her step daughter does not take the news well and does several things to mess with her step mother. But how will it end? Highly suggest this read to find out. A solid thriller.
Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read this e-arc!
Good book. Halfway through you realize who is causing everything but with them not being a big part of the book, it makes you want to finish to find out how they are doing it. Don’t let the title fool you!
The Stepdaughter’s Lie is the latest psychological thriller by Teri Terry that had me on the edge wondering how everything was going to get resolved.
Rowan who is married to Theo finds out she is pregnant. Her stepdaughter Ellie is less than thrilled, so much so that she decides she will mess with Rowan in hopes of ruining Rowan and Theo’s relationship and their baby. Rowan has a past that she wants to keep secret, but with this pregnancy she is finding herself having nightmares of her past. Will her past and her current situation be too much for her?
The three of them live in a high tech smart house where everything inside is controlled by voice command or app. This gives Ellie an edge over Rowan because she has access to the control panel along with Theo. She can have the house deny her entrance or be locked in a room. These things only last momentarily and appear to be system failures that resolve but it starts affecting her mentally. She is also always finding herself extremely sleep deprived because of these “tricks”, and she starts to question her own sanity but never admitting anything is wrong besides being sleep deprived. This and her past start to haunt her questioning if she will even be able to care for a baby when she can’t care for herself.
I really liked Rowan and felt for her with everything going on and when she would try to be involved with her stepdaughter. It really felt like she was alone in everything. I found myself frustrated with Ellie. She just was not even giving her stepmom a chance. It was hard to like someone who continues to do mean things. She came across as a bratty entitled teenager. As we learn more of her past I found my opinion of her change. Theo is a workaholic and always away on business trips or working late. He came across as unlikeable. His concerns seemed fake since he seemed to never be there for Rowan.
Although there weren’t many surprises for me, I did predict how this book would end. That being said, I did really enjoy reading it. It was very easy to read in the POV of two characters….Rowan and Ellie. This book does touch on the subject of abandonment, religious extremism and abuse (Rowan’s past), and lies. This is an easy book to read as it just flows and makes you want to keep reading to see what will happen next. I also liked that the chapters are short, so if you’re someone who has limited time to read here and there throughout the day, you can easily pick up, pause, and start back again.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for sending this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own. Release date: July 29, 2024.
I received an advance review copy for free thanks to Bookouture and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

My life should be perfect. But my stepdaughter wants to destroy it all…
Standing in my bathroom, the luxurious marble tiles cool under my feet, I stare at the test in my trembling hand. The second line is unmistakable: I’m pregnant.

My Opinion
What a gripping thriller!
When I first picked up this book, my intention was to just read the first few chapters and put the book down, within pages I was hooked and I had read 20% before I realised. Teri Terry has written a real page-turner. Short chapters and alternating perspectives made this such a quick book to read. I found myself wanting to read on to find out what was happening to Rowan. Ellie and her stepmother don’t necessarily see eye-to-eye but can the pair trust each other? With all of the twists and turns, this book will certainly take you on a journey.
This is definitely a must-read psychological thriller, and I am definitely adding Teri Terry to my list of must-read authors. If you are looking for a new thriller to read, then this is one to add to your list.
I like the cover. It's a simple design but that does not mean it is any less intriguing and attractive. A title with the word 'lie' in it, makes my brain run through a whole lot of scenarios immediately. Questions like why does she lie and what does she lies about and who does she lie to, ... I was ready to sit back, dive in and enjoy.
And enjoy it I did! I feasted on the way a person can and will use every trick in the book in order to achieve their goals, not caring one bit what this will do to their victim. One thing the culprits always seem to forget is that Miss Karma is never far away. She is lurking around the corner, waiting for the perfect time to strike and bring them down..
A great read that captivated me from the beginning until the end. There was nothing I did not like. The writing style was fluent, the characters were perfect and the premise was top notch. 5 stars
The Step Daughter’s Lie was an edge of your seat thriller, with so many twists. The main character finds herself at the mercy of a rather devious step daughter, who seems hellbent on making her life miserable. Her husband seems to almost encourage the behavior of his daughter..which leaves his wife feeling unsupported and like she’s losing her mind.
Theo and Ellie were completely unlikeable characters from the very beginning for me, and I was impressed with how detailed they came across the page at me, I usually don’t dislike a character so easily. The plot was really good, and I was not expecting where it was headed AT ALL.
Definitely worth the read! It’s fast paced, fun and just the right amount of dark.
This book wasn't really my cup of tea. It was interesting, but not enough to truly hold my attention. I didn't dislike it, I just had a hard time connecting with it. I'm sure there will be other readers that love it, though! It just wasn't for me.
The Stepdaughter's Lie By: Teri Terry Release date: July 29, 2024
A Stepdaughter's Lie was a great read for me. I read mystery, thriller, and romance novels. I was pleasantly surprised how this book grabbed my attention from the beginning. I could not put it down as I NEEDED to find out how this story unfolded. I really enjoyed the plot! As much as I loved Ellie and Rowans POV, I had hoped to read some of Theo's.This however, probably won’t affect the majority of the audience, so it’s definitely not something that should deter anyone from reading the book. This is a fun, quick-paced story that will not disappoint. I would recommend this book to anyone who loved mystery and thrillers.
Thank you to Teri Terry and Netgalley for allowing me to read this ARC.
"The Step Daughter’s Lie" by Teri Terry. This gripping thriller explores the intricate dynamics within a family, filled with deception, secrets, and unexpected twists. Teri Terry skillfully crafts a suspenseful narrative that keeps readers hooked from the very first page. The characters are compelling and multi-dimensional, each with their own motivations and flaws that add depth to the story. The novel expertly navigates themes of trust, betrayal, and the consequences of lies, making it a riveting read for fans of psychological thrillers. Overall, "The Step Daughter’s Lie" is a thrilling and intense novel that will keep you guessing until the very end.
3⭐️ Soooooooo idk how i feel about this book. It was good but it bothered me a lot. I felt a bit unsettled at the end. It was so creepy with all of the high tech vera stuff and what the dad did. I liked Rowan and loved Ellie. Graces story was so intriguing. I wanted us to meet Graces son. I was so scared of Graces dad.
Oh my god this grown woman is scared of her own shadow? I kept rolling my eyes at every little adversity and how she handled it. Not to mention every time something tough or odd happened she FELL ASLEEP. I wanted to scream!!! This was so tough to get through lol
Very interesting mystery with great relationship development, especially as the story progressed towards the end. However, the reveal was predictable at least from the middle of the story and I was hoping for .
My Review: I must admit that I read this in one sitting, stopping for food and potty breaks, whilst enjoying the Sunday summer sun and evening breeze. I believe this is my first book by Teri Terry and was engaged in the story from it’s first pages. It’s told from 2 main perspectives and a minor(ish) perspective. Rowan the lead, her stepdaughter Ellie and a distant but prominent memory called Grace. Ellie hates her stepmother and does everything she can to sabotage her dads marriage, she is literally the worst stepdaughter imaginable. Even 5 years after they married, the news of a new baby doesn’t help. Theo appears to be a wonderful husband, excited by the prospect of a new baby, accepting of his daughter’s dislike towards her stepmother. This book induced trauma with incredible twists, I was bewildered, intrigued and totally hooked. Not all that glitters is gold. We have prenups, secrets, lies and deception and the outcome is quite something. Fabulously thrilling, with trigger warnings surrounding abortion, religious trauma and adoption.
There is tension and frustration running throughout this story! It doesn't matter if you do work out some twists, of which there are many, the developments and changing relationships will keep you fixated on this book.
I could see how things had evolved between Ellie and Rowan - there was definitely confirmation bias going on. I loved how each had their own issues and secrets and I was hoping they'd actually share with each other. The addition of modern technology to events was a great touch.
I wanted a bit more detail about some past events and felt there was one addition that I'd have preferred left out. However, I enjoyed learning more about Grace...
Overall, this was such a gripping story with great character development. The relationship between daughter and stepmother is scarily believable.
*I received a complementary copy of the e-book from the publisher and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
My second book by Teri Terry and this was so good I couldn’t not give it 5 stars!
When Rowan met Theo, they both fell in love fast, they had a whirlwind romance and married quickly. This is Theo’s second marriage, Naomi, his first wife, is still classed as a missing person however Theo seems certain that Naomi has committed suicide after suffering with postnatal depression, disappearing when their daughter, Ellie was only a few weeks old. Ever since Rowan met Ellie at aged 12, they haven’t got on and despite 5 years of marriage to Theo and Rowan trying her hardest to bond with Ellie, Ellie still hates her and now she is a 17 year old, she doesn’t hide this fact from either her dad or Rowan herself. Theo and Ellie’s house is a SMART house, using a prototype similar to Amazon’s Alexa, that Theo’s company has been developing, however this one is called Vera- named after Theo’s late mother. Ellie enjoys hacking the system and pulling pranks on Rowan such as changing the system to call Rowan, “wicked stepmother”. When Rowan and Theo’s wish to have a child of their own becomes true, Ellie is even more put out that she will have a little stepsister or stepbrother. Rowan leaves work to concentrate on her health whilst being pregnant and this means she is spending more time in the home and having more pranks pulled on her by Ellie. However, Rowan isn’t who she seems and has a secret past that she must protect and keep secret at all costs, especially now she is pregnant! Her two worlds collide, the past and the present, and it seems Rowan’s past just won’t stay hidden. As Rowans pregnancy passes the pranks in and around the house escalate and she starts to question her own sanity, plus with her soon to be a mother herself she wants to learn more about Naomi and why she might have disappeared, leaving Ellie when she was so small, but someone doesn’t want her digging around in the past and is determined to make her stop, whatever the cost. Will Rowan manage to keep herself and her unborn baby safe or will she end up being silenced forever?!
Wow this was one heck of a ride, and I loved every minute of it!! I was already hooked by the prologue, what a beginning! I really enjoyed hearing the story from both Rowan and Ellie however I disliked Theo from the very first page! At the start I thought Ellie was being a right little bitch and felt really sorry for Rowan, however I did grow to understand Ellie and start to understand the reasons behind her bad behaviour. When I found out about the past Rowan was desperately trying to hide, I felt even more sorry for her. I was very intrigued to read about VERA and having a SMART house, and I do think that the world is very much heading towards that sort of a system in households in the future, I am not sure whether I would like it or not. I did have one character pegged from the very start and so I was very excited when they showed their hand and proved me right, I will say that the guess I made definitely didn’t ruin the story for me though! I was thrilled I got it right (I do admit though, this may have been because I am a psychological thriller fan and have read a fair few rather than the twist being too obvious).
This book was so deserving of 5 stars, I really was having trouble putting it down and was reading every spare moment I had. I highly recommend it to any fans of psychological thrillers; trust me you won’t be disappointed. I can’t wait for Teri Terrys next book.
Thank you to NetGalley, Teri Terry and Bookouture for my advanced reading copy. Out now.
In this novel, the readers are plunged into a tense psychological thriller where familial tensions and buried secrets collide with devastating consequences. The premise revolves around a seemingly perfect life shattered by distrust, manipulation, and a desperate struggle for survival.
The story unfolds through the eyes of the protagonist, whose newfound pregnancy should be a moment of joy but becomes a catalyst for fear and paranoia. Her stepdaughter, Ellie, harbors deep resentment, viewing her stepmother as an interloper in her once-idyllic family life. As tensions escalate, the protagonist discovers disturbing secrets that threaten not only her marriage but also her very existence.
One of the novel's strengths lies in its portrayal of complex relationships and the dynamics of blended families. The author adeptly explores the psychological undercurrents between stepmother and stepdaughter, portraying Ellie as a multifaceted character whose actions blur the line between innocence and malevolence. Despite the plot holes noted, such as inconsistencies in security measures and occasional predictable reveals, the narrative maintains a brisk pace with short, compelling chapters that drive the story forward.
Rowan's internal struggles and growing sense of isolation are palpable, drawing readers into her escalating paranoia and desperate attempts to protect herself and her unborn child. The author skillfully weaves together themes of deception, maternal instinct, and the lengths one will go to safeguard their future against unforeseen threats.
While some readers may find the protagonist's occasional hints about her past burdensome, overall, "The Stepdaughter's Lie" delivers a gripping, accessible read within the psychological thriller genre. Ellie's character development is a standout, showcasing a young woman whose cunning and resentment are balanced by a poignant vulnerability that adds depth to the narrative.
In conclusion, "The Stepdaughter's Lie" offers a compelling exploration of family dynamics, deception, and the fragility of trust. Despite its flaws, it remains a solid choice for readers seeking a suspenseful tale with well-drawn characters and a plot that keeps you guessing until the final pages.
WOW, just wow!! It is hard for a book to live up to the thriller/mystery title and let me say this book did it. The characters were so well developed. I have actual emotions about each of them, disgust, love, sadness, anger, etc. just when I thought I had figured it out - I was wrong. Teri Terry hit it out of the park with this one.
“The Stepdaughter’s Lie” is a gripping psychological thriller that hits in all the right places. It follows a woman named Rowan with a hidden past who lives with her husband Theo and 17-year-old stepdaughter Ellie. They all live in a smart home developed by Theo himself. Ellie despises Rowan and the hatred grows when Rowan unexpectedly becomes pregnant. Ellie torments Rowen to the point she is convinced she has lost her mind. Sleepless nights, unfortunate “accidents”, forgetfulness, etc. has Rowan’s past caught up to her? Is Ellie really the tormentor after all? Has the smart home become a prison for everyone?
Initially I despised Ellie and her temper tantrums but throughout the book she began to grow on me to the point where my heart hurt for her too. The characters had so much depth to them and as each layer was pulled back you got to see how perfectly they were designed. Looks are always deceiving.
This book is so much more than the description. It explores religious group abuse, drugs, manipulation, grief, family drama, and gaslighting. Everything meld together seamlessly and the result is an expertly crafted psychological thriller. If you are looking for a book that will suck you in and keep you in suspense then this is for you.
*Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for the opportunity to read this ARC. I will be definitely buying a hard copy when it is released!!
Wow! This was a fast paced gripping psychological thriller and I was hooked from the first page. In this we're following Rowan who after a traumatic past has completely changed her life and she's now married to tech mogul Theo and is a stepmother to Ellie who she doesnt really get along with. When Rowan discovers she's pregnant her life starts to spiral, strange things start happening around her home causing her insomnia and anxiety to worsen. She believes everything's being caused by Ellie but the truth is much worse. Rowan is an unreliable narrator due to her past and insomnia and it really adds to the story I enjoyed that this had short fast paced chapters and that it was in dual pov from Rowans and Ellies perspectives. Seeing how they were both reacting to the things going on around them and watching Ellies growth as she matured as a character was perfect and Ellie soon became my favourite character in this. This also made me see how much id hate to have a tech filled home this filled me with unease and anxiousness with all the things that could and did go wrong. This is a must read for any psychological thriller fans it will definitely keep you turning pages late into the night.
This story follows Rowan and her stepdaughter, Ellie who, have a distant if not contemptuous relationship. When Rowan finds herself surprisingly pregnant, her relationship with her husband suddenly becomes quite strained. Beyond that, she can’t seem to get any restful sleep… which never helps anything, does it?
In The Step Daughter’s Lie, we get to hear from both Rowan and Ellie as narrators. Despite a (imo) predictable overall story arc, I did find some elements of the story surprising along the way. This was a fast-paced read that kept me wanting to turn the page. Ellie’s perspective was interesting to read, and I thought the author did a good job capturing the perspective of a teenage girl (where every problem is someone else’s fault…). The technology of the house also added an interesting element to the story.
I would definitely read another thriller from Teri Terry in the future.
I would like to thank NetGalley, Bookouture Publishing, and the author for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This was SO GOOD. what a journey! 4.5 stars! So much happened in this book, It's about a character called Rowan who is married to her husband Theo and lives with their step-daughter Ellie and follows their journey as a family when Rowan gets pregnant, It is creepy, secretive and really keeps you guessing! and just when you think you've been hit with everything then oncoming something else and just goes somewhere else! I couldn't believe the amount of stories this follows in one book and doesn't get confusing either and just works so well. I honestly loved this, was hooked from the first page and couldn't put it down towards the end. SPOILER BELOW. . . . . . . . . . The ONLY reason for losing 0.5 star for me and missing out on it being a 5 star was I felt like Rowan/Grace going craaaazy had to have been more than sleep deprivation? I honestly thought that Theo was drugging her and I understand he was working overtime to make her not sleep, like why didn't she check the heating? wear earplugs? - I felt like allll the shit that went wrong over her not sleeping just felt like there had to be another reason. - for me anyway! But overall, this was minor and I LOVED this so so much!!!
Stars: 4 Pub Date: July 29, 2024 Format: E-Book Review: The Step Daughter's Lie was my first Teri Terry and it will NOT be my last. This read was everything I am looking for in a psychological thriller. Secrets, lies, tumultuous relationships, and twists and turns at every corner. Absolutely bingeable. Pros: Loved the Step-Mother/Step-Daughter relationship- It was the perfect amount of unhinged behavior on both sides. Also love multiple POV's Cons: There were some great twists but I did predict a bit of the ending. I could have done with some more details about Rowan's back story. Recommend (Yes/No/Maybe): Yes, Absolutely! If you're a thriller lover this is a great read. Definitely all the things I am looking for and I have already called several friends to share the book. Very well done! Content Warnings: Sexual Violence, Domestic Abuse, Gaslighting, Abortion Thank you NetGalley and for giving me the opportunity to review the title.
Rowan is surprised to find out she is pregnant. It is all her and husband Theo have wanted. One problem stands in the way, step daughter Ellie. Ellie has always caused trouble for Rowan, playing pranks and manipulating situations. Rowan is scared how Ellie will react to the pregnancy and how far Ellie will go to destroy it all.
Having read the authors previous novel, The Patient and enjoying it, I was keen to read this one. I also found the cover striking! After finishing I can say that this was another entertaining thriller with interesting characters. The author does a great job creating tension and paranoia and there is an eerie atmosphere as the novel builds up suspense.
Although there are some twists, I didn’t get any major surprises, however I enjoyed the way they were done and the drama surrounding them. The book takes a while to get going but by the end it is a fast paced, fun psychological thriller. I look forward to more by this author! Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this copy in return for an honest review.
I'm a long time fan of Teri Terry's work, since her excellent 'young adult' releases (I am not 'young' but enjoyed them all immensely, particularly the Slated trilogy, which I live in hope will be adapted for film or TV eventually). She has a distinctive style, with short snappy chapters, usually from alternating narrators. In the case of this novel, the narration alternates between Rowan, a woman in her thirties with a successful career and married to a wealthy man called Theo; and Ellie, Theo's teenage daughter. Ellie's mother left the family shortly after her birth and she has no memories of her, but she is adamant that she does NOT like her stepmother, and delights in finding ways to needle and taunt her, many including the capabilities of their high-tech house surveillance/control system, which is called VERA.
Rowan is shocked to discover that she is pregnant, but fiercely protective of the unborn child she thought she never wanted. Dealing with this in the context of events from her past, alongside the behaviour of a very jealous Ellie, starts to cause the situation to spiral....
Tautly written, with twists and turns I didn't see coming, I really enjoyed this book. Highly recommended.
My Review: WOW!!!!! My first read by this author and it certainly won’t be my last. I was hooked from the very first page. I did not want to put this one down. I had to finish it and fast. The characters are what really made this book for me. I felt for them all and what they were going through. Each of them had a sad story that they tried to hide but as we know secrets will always come out. One way or another. The plot helped keep me interested in this one as well. It kept me on the edge of my seat wanting to know more as each chapter had passed. It had many twists and turns. My head was spinning by the end. Don’t even get me started on that shocking ending. Never in a millions years would I have guessed all of that. There were signs throughout the book but it really threw me for a loop. With all this being said I can’t wait to read another one by this author.
In conclusion, the plot, the characters and all the twists in this book made this book an enjoyable read. I would definitely recommend it and happily give it 5 Hearts❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
