In 2005, he became a Character Design professor at the Osaka University of Arts. Since 2009, he is a member of Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize's nominating committee.

L'opera probabilmente più radicale e dannata di Go Nagai, di cui tutte le successive sono un poco versioni edulcorate. Il giovane e pavido Akira Fudo, timido e riservato, tanto alieno dalla violenza da non poter aiutare nemmeno un'amica importunata da tre bulletti di quartiere nipponici, si ritrova trascinato dall'amico Ryo in una paurosa avventura, tra sabba e demoni. Lo scopo è contrastare l'invasione dei demoni che si stanno risvegliando dall'ibernazione. L'unico modo è fondersi con i più potenti di questi in modo da ottenere il corpo di un demone. Quindi non un uomo posseduto da un demone ma un demone posseduto da una mente razionale umana è la via attraverso cui avversare l'invasione. Peccato che per fondersi con un demone, l'uomo debba perdere la sua razionalità.
In un crescendo di violenza, filosofia e mistero svelato, Go Nagai si diverte con citazioni della Divina commedia, si diverte costruendo tavole scure, tutte giocate sui contrasti tra i personaggi e le loro intenzioni, l'ambiente e l'atmosfera gotica.
Certo, come disegnatore è sempre stato grezzo, ma le tavole scorrono con una buona narrazione, veloce, mai noiosa e intrigante.
4 stelle quantomeno.

I liked the idea behind this and most of the art was nice, but the dialog is TERRIBLE. It's some of the worst that I have ever seen in a manga, to the point that it is very distracting and takes you right out of the story.

Ottima introduzione alla storia.

Ich habe den Manga nach der Anime-Serie angefangen zu lesen und war am Anfang etwas verblüfft, da der Zeichenstil dem Anime überhaupt nicht ähnelt und für mich persönlich etwas abschreckend war. Ich wollte den Manga jedoch nicht abbrechen, nur weil mir der Zeichenstil nicht gefällt, und zum Glück habe ich weitergelesen. Ich mag die allgemeine Story sehr gerne und die Hauptcharaktere Ryo und Akira. Ich würde dieses Buch empfehlen, wenn ihr Sci-Fi und Retellings vom Armageddon/Bibel mögt!

Once upon a time, demons invaded the world, wiping out all prehistoric creatures that once ruled the earth. After dominating all life, they ruled the world for many long years until the great ice age froze them in burials of ice deep down in the underworld. After the demons were lost to history, a new race called humans were born, and they became the new rulers of the world. Left undisturbed for thousands of years, the humans were ignorant of the threat of demons lurking just under their feet. In the modern age of technology, industrialization and political turmoil, the demons begin to rise once more, merging with corrupt humans to pollute the world with violence so they may rule once more.
Mankind’s only hope for salvation is to use the demons’ power against them, and only a pure-hearted man like Akira Fudo can do so without losing his humanity. Once, he was little more than a timid crybaby, but Akira now wields the terrible power of a devil, yet holds the innocent soul of a man; he is a Devilman. Akira gets dragged into a dark world of conspiracy, betrayal and bloodshed by his best friend Ryo. Ryo's father was a genius researcher of the occult who left many records and findings informing them of the oncoming demon invasion before he was possessed and took his own life. Now the two friends are the only ones with the power and the knowledge to save the world or lead it to its destruction.
Devilman has quite the legacy. It's very rough around the edges and it definitely shows its age with some stale dialogue, major pacing issues, one dimensional characters who react unrealistically, etc, but all of these things are to be expected since it was written in 1972 around the time when the medium was just beginning to find solid ground and can be considered the grandfather of all modern horror, dark fantasy and mature adult manga in general. It heavily inspired countess classic masterpieces and memorable modern tales such as Berserk, Attack on Titan, Gantz, Neon Genesis Evangalion, Parasyte, Death Note, Tokyo Ghoul, as well as the works of Junji Ito, Naoki Urasawa and Satoshi Kon. Hell, even many non-horror series have drawn inspiration from it such as Yu Yu Hakusho, Inuyasha and Dragon Ball. You could say that Devilman is to manga what Lovecraft is to modern horror.
Though it does struggle to move itself forward at times, the lore behind the demons, the origin of the main character merging with a powerful entity which is used in many modern series and the emotional climactic ending are all fascinating to see. The author also utilizes a lot of real-world literature to set the foundation of the plot and backstory. In the world of Devilman, the events of Dante's Divine Comedy and the Christian Bible are things that actually happened, it also brings in a lot of historical references and events such as the Salem Witch Trials, Black Sabbaths, WWII, race feuds, slavery and colonization. It's one of the first series that created the 'humans can be more cruel, terrifying and monstrous than actual demons, monsters and wild animals' plots that we've seen done thousands of times.
It's definitely a tad corny and poorly written in some places, but it's great to see where many modern storytelling tropes originated from and how it inspired so many of my all-time favorite series. The Netflix adaption Devilman Crybaby is also a very cool modernized retelling of the original story and I honestly prefer it over the manga a bit.

Bastante bueno.
Desde hace tiempo que mire el anime de Devilman Crybaby no pude sacarme de la cabeza la historia acerca de demonios, criaturas malvadas y el lado cruel de la humanidad. Los temas grotescos que trata impactaron en mí al punto de querer saber más, es por eso que finalmente me decidí a leer el manga.
Puedo decir que no me decepcionó, para ser de hace unos 50 años atrás tiene una estructura y dibujo excelentes. Si bien podría decirse que no hay tanta congruencia en la secuencia de la historia y los personajes, al menos en este primer tomo, es muy interesante como se introduce el tema de los demonios rápidamente.
Otra cosa, es que no puedo evitar pensar en el anime de crybaby al leerlo. Comparo más que nada a los personajes, Ryo hasta ahora parece un poco más blando y sentimental a como recuerdo que se comportaba en el anime; aunque apenas leí el primer volumen así que todavía puede cambiar esto y resultar en que no es así. Akira me parece que sí es igual que en Crybaby, tal vez un poco menos llorón; e igual fácil de influenciar por Ryo. Y Miki, parece mucho más dura a como es en la adaptación.
Aunque aún no se puede definir nada de los personajes ya que solo he leído un volumen. Espero que los personajes se vayan desarrollando de buena manera y la historia llegue a ser distinta y mejor que el anime de Netflix.
Hasta ahora, me agradó mucho comenzar el manga. Tengo altas expectativas para los siguientes tomos.

Non sapevo cosa aspettarmi da questo volume, preludio dell'opera forse più conosciuta di Go Nagai, e sono felice di poter dire di esserne rimasta piacevolmente colpita. È un tipo di manga con uno stile a cui generalmente non sono abituata, ma il modo in cui la storia è impostata è semplicemente magistrale (non che mi aspettassi di meno da un maestro come Nagai).
Le spiegazioni sono lucidissime, con un proprio senso logico nonostante il sapore fantasy, e tutto il contesto è presentato alla perfezione da Ryo, il migliore amico del protagonista Akira Fudo.
La storia di Akira, questo ragazzino timido e dal cuore puro che riesce ad avere la meglio sulla volontà di un potente demone che si incarna in lui, è appena cominciata, ma non vedo l'ora di leggerne di più. Ci sono anche dei riferimenti alla Commedia dantesca, opera che personalmente apprezzo moltissimo e che contribuiscono ad accrescere ancora di più la voglia di continuare con la lettura. Sono felice di aver scacciato la titubanza iniziale e di essermi approcciata a questa pietra miliare degli shonen.
Per quanto riguarda i personaggi apparsi finora, Akira e Ryo mi hanno subito conquistato, ma volevo fare una menzione d'onore a "Miki la sberla": si è vista per poco meno di dieci pagine, eppure ha già un posto speciale nel mio cuore.

Prima ancora dei primitivi uomini-scimmia la Terra era dominata dai demoni, scomparsi dal pianeta in seguito alle ere glaciali. Nei giorni nostri vengono così ritrovati nelle catene montuose dell’Himalaya, in particolare intrappolati tra i ghiacci, i demoni dal famoso archeologo Asuka.
Il primo apparente tema trattato dall’autore é l’inquinamento, causa portante dello scioglimento dei ghiacciai: molteplici demoni, ai giorni nostri, sono riusciti a liberarsi e sono decisi a riprendere il controllo del pianeta Terra massacrando l’intera popolazione terrestre.
Ryo, figlio dell’archeologo Asuka riuscito ad unirsi ad un diavolo, convince il protagonista Akira ad unirsi al demone Amon in modo da dare una speranza al loro pianeta natale (“… un uomo dal cuore puro ed onesto, con una volontà così forte da essere in grado di controllare la coscienza del demone. Deve essere un giovane che ama la giustizia.”)

You can really see it's an old manga since it's bad in every aspect except maybe the premise & themes but the art is not good and the expressions are either extremely dramatic or expression-less no inbetween. The dialogues are horribly bad (the traduction probably doesn't help 😅) and it all happens way too fast and too slow at the same time.
I don't think I could stand to read the rest when I couldn't wait to be done with this one but y'know it's a classic that's still worth reading for the cultural heritage (and maybe you'll find it bad-funny enough to keep on reading unlike me, who knows) & it's interesting to see how manga evolved.
*not rating it because it's a product of its time in terms of quality & story writing so it would be unfair to rate it with todays standards

I feel the same way about this as I did about the Dororo manga. it's dated and the years did not treat it well, but I feel I have now learned to stop comparing older manga to the new generations and can truly appreciate them separately for what they are now that I've experienced more of them. the art in this was definitely way ahead of its time and I can see the extent of inspiration it has had on many future works. good stuff.

Der ganze erste Band ist eigentlich ein Prolog.
Der LEser verfolgt im ersten Mann wie Devilman ensteht.
Ein Mensch, der ein Dämon in sich hat ihn aber steuern kann und gegen Dämonen kämpft, dass ist der Devilman.
Der Manga ist von 1972 und das merkt man am Artstyle mich hat es ein bißchen an Kitaro erinnert.
Ich steh total drauf und der Lesefluss flowt auch ohne Ende.
Bin gespannt auf Band 2

Questa è la versione integrale; il solo primo volume è entusiasmante, attacco subito il secondo e poi via così :)
Gran bei disegni, molto essenziali, ma espressivi; le pagine colorate sono bellissime, ma quelle in bianco e nero rimangono suggestive anche grazie all'uso sapiente dei retini.
Bello, bello davvero.

Un volume d’impatto, anche se sicuramente non esente da difetti.
La sceneggiatura e i dialoghi sono il problema principale, sono invecchiati, ma sicuramente non erano il cavallo di battaglia neanche all’epoca.
La storia comunque riesce a catturarti anche con questi difetti, grazie a personaggi ben caratterizzati, disegni molto affascinanti e un bell’immaginario.
Un primo volume, nel complesso, decisamente buono e iconico.

This is a promising start to the series. The exposition was way too heavy in this one, but I like the retro (or dated, depending on your taste) art and Go Nagai's moments of insanity. Can't wait to dig deeper into this.

Blood. Gore. Nudity. The dialogue feels like a child wrote it but the plot seems to be more complex but at times confusing, especially with the concept of demons merging with humans. Akiro is too over the top and Ryo has this shady side to him that gets lost in his long dialogues. The volume kept me bored quite a bit and were it not for the atmosphere of the club and the long awaited transformation, I would have rated this lower.

I can remember being bored with the beginning and middle of this volume, as mentioned by the details in my review. Not even the club scenes, which are four star content, can raise the overall rating of the volume to three stars. I should not confuse my rating of the volume with how I feel about the volume now, since I have read the entire series and and now enjoy reading this volume to find Easter eggs and compare and contrast the characters from the beginning of the series to what happened in the end.

Update
With the adoption of my new rating system, a two star rating is befitting. The original review and rating update conform to the new rating system. I am certain that this volume can receive a two star-rating at its peak, but question if a one star rating is more appropriate. I recall questioning the direction of the volume and the constant boredom I received from reading this first volume, which is why I was astonished that the later volumes were better. I know that the the club scenes were of three star content but I am not sure if it allowed for the maintaining of a two star rating. I believe the volume left me yearning for answers so it does not reach the depths of a three star rating, full of disliking or hate. This choice of rating the volume at two stars is similar to my rating of the first volume of "Pandora Hearts, Volume 1", except in that series, I have only read the first three volumes and there still remains many questions to be answered.

To digress on the update from August 25, 2019, and how I had felt after finishing the volume, like "Pandora Hearts, Volume 1" I was curious and confused about the start of the first volume, not to the point of disliking. I am certain this is a two star-rated book because of this reasoning.

With the adoption of my new rating system, a two star rating is befitting. The original review and rating update conform to the new rating system. I am certain that this volume can receive a two star-rating at its peak, but question if a one star rating is more appropriate. I recall questioning the direction of the volume and the constant boredom I received from reading this first volume, which is why I was astonished that the later volumes were better. I know that the the club scenes were of three star content but I am not sure if it allowed for the maintaining of a two star rating. I believe the volume left me yearning for answers so it does not reach the depths of a three star rating, full of disliking or hate. This choice of rating the volume at two stars is similar to my rating of the first volume of "Pandora Hearts, Volume 1", except in that series, I have only read the first three volumes and there still remains many questions to be answered.

Update
To digress on the update from August 25, 2019, and how I had felt after finishing the volume, like "Pandora Hearts, Volume 1" I was curious and confused about the start of the first volume, not to the point of disliking. I am certain this is a two star-rated book because of this reasoning.

I have changed the color from yellow with a grey outline to green with a grey outline because I support the reasoning, from the original review and subsequent updates, that this book received a neutral reception of two stars.

Le début d'une série culte. Le dessin est simple et paraît niais et gentil, mais est tout de même capable de montrer une violence et une menace inouïe.

Altissimo livello! A molti potrebbero non piacere i disegni, ma io li trovo essenziali e perfettamente in linea con la storia. Prende dalla prima all'ultima pagina.
