Path of Conquest: An Apocalypse LitRPG

Rate this book
The end of the world affords a restless everyman the chance to be a fearless warrior in this exciting apocalyptic adventure filled with magic and monsters.

James Robard was a risk-taking con artist and thief before he turned over a new leaf as a loving husband and a dull suit in a law firm. He’s never felt so unadventurous. That is, until the System descends upon Earth and he’s initiated into a thrilling game world of magic and mayhem, training for exhilarating challenges that make him feel alive again.

With much of the Earth’s population already wiped out, James’s first mission is to survive. But the System sees much more in him—like his potential as a warrior. After all, it’s judging him by his nefarious past. It knows he’d kill to outlast the dangers ahead and be reunited with his family. In fact, it’s counting on it. It seems the System has found its game villain.

Forging a path of escalating stamina, mana, and skills, James is tossed into violent combat with ravenous monsters, treacherous humans, diabolical cults, and gods of less-than-divine intervention. The life-and-death risks and total abandon are giving James a rush. He’s been given free rein to be ruthless. But being a pioneer of chaos has its consequences.

Torn between his power-hungry impulses and better instincts, James embarks on a journey of self-discovery through a cataclysmic new realm. And along with a band of fellow survivors, he’s about to find out his true purpose in the System’s apocalyptic endgame.

The first volume of the hit LitRPG adventure series—with more than 700,000 views on Royal Road—now available in paperback, ebook, and audiobook!

I do not much like the gray ambiguity in the morality of the main character. He shows great ruthlessness but then also mercy on people who are guilty of cold blooded planned murder. If the protagonist was ruthless through the book it would be one thing. But the character is also overly kind to the point of heroic sacrifice too. To compare it without doing a spoiler an example would be a cop who sets up criminals for his enrichment but then randomly asks a prosecutor to go easy on a criminal he knows is guilty unrepentant and will most likely do more crime. Died not make sense.

Yes people are often amoral and self serving. But it is silly to think the same person will do evil one time and then have done random character change and do good.

The story also starts to plod along and put too much clever drama wit in it via his mini adventure. I geuss it had some exciting action and dynamics of how people’s will react in a terrible sort of apocalypse situation- but I guess I was not to interested in the in depth character monologues of characters I did not like or have empathy for that I found evil and illogical. I am kinda doubtful I will pursue reading more by the author.

Awesome LitRPG!

This refreshing take on LitRPG was very enjoyable. The morally grey MC is very believable and his thinking and actions are both reasonable and relatable.
Of note: this is one of the very few LitRPGs I have read that has a African American MC. I felt the author did a great job of addressing a few of the issues African Americans face without playing the victim.
I highly recommend this to LitRPG readers and I eagerly await the release of the next book!

This is really good 👍 but mc has potions and won't use them he runs out of stamina every fight I don't understand why it stupid 😒 it's like he forgot he had them but this book is awesome just wish I could listen to books 2 and 3..
I find alot of litrpg books strange 🤔 humans are terrible smh monsters have 2 motivations hunger and survival humans on the other hand a hot mess you never know then the whole CAPITAN SAVE A HOE complex drives me nuts... most of the genre is like this let's group up then get back stabbed 2 chiefs or 2 queens in the mix don't work.

Dope

This is dope story is about average for the genre. Characters are ok. Love the skills and level ups. This is a good introduction to the genre. If you like The Primal Hunter or HeWhoFightsWithMonsters you’ll enjoy this.

After listening to 7 hours of the audio book, I just couldn't connect with the MC. Lots of talk about being ruthless but he isn't.

There is a mix of common sense and stupidity but it seems that both are at the whim of plot more than anything else.

Note to self: nope. The narrator managed to make the apocalypse, boring.
