Nothing cinnamon-roll about this tale of monster lovin’. Welcome to the lagoon. It won’t hurt… much. “Riley,” he said in that rich voice of his. “You can take a few more of my eggs.”
She gasped. “Not too many.”
“Not too many,” he agreed. “But more.”
Dr. Riley Stine arrives at a remote spot in a lush, tropical forest to study a newly discovered amphibious creature. But when the creature turns murderous, she is trapped in a nightmarish new reality with no escape.
The situation grows more chaotic when she and everyone working at the site are dosed with a soup of insect-amphibian-fish DNA.
Now, they have all been altered in strange, horrid, and darkly pleasurable ways.
This horrormance is a B-movie creature feature with all the body horror and so much my-body-is-betraying-me kink. non-con, dub-con, ovipositors, death-by-eggs, sensual egg laying, and a somewhat disturbing HEA. Not for the faint of heart.
Primatologist Riley joins a research team brought together by a billionaire to study an enigmatic amphibious creature known simply as Bub in a remote, secluded research facility. What begins as a groundbreaking study on intelligence beyond humanity quickly spirals into an unsettling exploration of scientific boundaries. As the team delves deeper, they encounter inexplicable transformations within themselves, morphing both body and mind closer to their subjects than they ever imagined possible. Isolated and under the watchful eye of their mysterious benefactor, trust frays and moral lines blur, pushing each member to confront the darkest sides of their work—and of themselves. Relationships within the group are tested and redefined, particularly between Angela and Luther, and Jonathan and Riley, as they each respond differently to their transformations. As their transformation progresses, the researchers must choose to embrace their new, monstrous beings driven by their sexuality or try to keep hold of their humanity. Ultra-hot and steamy blend of horror and romance, exploring scientific discovery, ethical questions, and moral dilemmas. An egg depositing/laying, breeding kink tale where The Thing meets The Creature from the Black Lagoon with some Frankenstein and a little Species.
Let me start out by saying that while this book kept my interest and I enjoyed it I do not think it’s a true horror romance. There were elements of horror tho such as (spoiler-ish) the woman exploding from too many eggs. (Which we didn’t see on page, just so the squeamish readers know.)
Now onto the real review for Lagoon! I truly feel like this book could be one of those old sci-fi movies where the mad scientist turns everyone into flies or something. It honestly read like one! Which is definitely still in line with what I was looking for as I’m reading my Smutoween tbr!
I thoroughly enjoyed following every worker’s POV. The fact that we ended up getting to see two couples together in the end and watching both of their experiences was definitely a win for me! I loved getting to see inside every character’s head!
If you enjoy slow burn monster romance and sci-fi movies I think this would make a great read for you!
3.5 stars. Riley is chimp expert hired to work in a remote Amazonian region studying an amphibious humanoid creature named Bub. Never having been exposed to a female before, Bub goes nuts and kidnaps her (even eventually the 2 other women at camp). This leads to Bub being locked up and subsequently killed. However, his blood enters their water supply and infects the camp.
The men are turned into Bub 2.0 and the women are still fairly human looking. But the men develop an oviposter under their dong and the women’s cervixes are hot for it. Most people in camp die, but 4 remain and they couple up. Laying eggs in the women is pleasurable for everyone and none of the eggs are viable, so no babies!
In the end, 2 of the people are rescued and cured by their rich philanthropist but Riley and the other scientist stay behind to revel in becoming a new species. They keep trying to make viable offspring ;)
Riley is hired at the beginning of the story to help with ongoing research with Bob, a creature like no other. But when Riley gets to the remote job site, things go sideways and trouble and drama erupts. Now the story promised me a horror and gothic feel and that is exactly what it felt like reading with a big dash of monster thrown in. Not really a light read but I thought it had some funny scenes if you like the macabre. A bit twisted and steamy and odd, but it was a good read. I enjoyed it.
This wasn't for me. I'm usually all over a sexy monster romance but this wasn't that. There's barely any romance (it's more egg smut) and the story was confusing and not my thing.
I felt like there were so many random characters I was losing track of who's who and apparently I'm not into eggs lol. It was definitely more of a "horror" / random smut vibe and thing got weird super fast. It's also really short so you don't get a feel for the relationships or characters and it just didn't do it for me.
Soo, this kinda was/wasn’t romance, but I can see what the author was trying to do. I felt like I was watching a late night b rated Hitchcock film. Where there was some suspense, some gruesomeness, some smut, but that ending I wasn’t expecting. Great ovipositor action. That was chefs kiss 🌶️🌶️🌶️. Will definitely recommend, but also check your triggers!!!!
Riley has always loved science and a new challenge, so this new job with Jonathon on a tropical in the middle of now where is perfect. But things aren’t as they seem. This story is freaky and horrifying, but the ending is happy (generally? In a horror movie sort of way?). I still don’t quite know what to think about what I just read - I know I read it in one sitting, unable to put it down, and I think I enjoyed it?! But I’ll never look at amphibians the same way again…
This was a great story!! The author has a warning in the beginning and it should be read but for me it just opened up a new area of interest I had no idea I’d be interested in! This story has some dark moments and there is death and gore. I was equal parts upset and interested but it doesn’t last long and it has a HEA!! Loved it!!
