Vancouver Tridents #3

Catch Her Heart

Rate this book
I’m the oldest virgin in major league baseball. And I’m in love with a woman who’s about to marry someone else.

Listen. It’s not like I planned to still be a virgin at twenty-eight. Or to fall in love with the team trainer, who apparently would rather date a guy who wears polo shirts instead of baseball pants.

But life doesn’t always go according to plan.

When I first laid eyes on Lark Miller, I knew she was something special. Unfortunately, so did her boyfriend.

For years I kept my feelings hidden. I accepted my role as best guy friend, and focused on my career. My priority needs to be securing another contract with the Vancouver Tridents so I can help my parents retire. I can’t afford any distractions.

But then the day comes that Lark shows up at my door, and tells me she’s ended her engagement. Not only that, but she’s broken up with polo shirt guy.

And then she kisses me.

My fantasy becomes my reality. Lark wants me. Me. She’s perfect, we’re perfect, everything is perfect. I’ve got the woman of my dreams, and the best part is she understands how important baseball has to be for me right now.

But remember what I said about life not going according to plan?

My name is Dan “Monty” Montgomery: Formerly the oldest virgin in baseball, and now the newest expectant father.

ETA: My reel for this book went viral on Instagram ahahaahahahaha😭 I'M SO GLAD THAT SO MANY PEOPLE WANT TO READ THIS BOOK AND THAT IT'S GETTING THE ATTENTION IT DESERVES!!! (this was one of my top 5 reads of 2024 btw😏)

Now THIS is how the "it's always been you" trope should be done👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 Authors, take notes📝 If y'all know me then you know that I absolutely LOVE the virgin hero trope. Usually I joke around (esp after reading dark romance books) and say that I want a man like that irl but in this case, I'm not fooling around. I would be honored to have a man like Dan Montgomery fall in love with me. Seriously. Green flags through and through. Actually scratch that. He ain't a green flag...he's a WHOLE ASS GREEN CARPET🥰

There were exactly 2 instances where I was annoyed with Lark but other than that, she was a great character as well. This book was honestly written so well and the smut was really good too. More often than not, when there's a virgin hero, he somehow knows exactly how to fuck like a porn star which tbh, is a bit unrealistic. This wasn't that. There were a lot of "teach me how to make you feel good" and fumbling moments which to me, felt realistic and that much more endearing. But once Dan got the hang of things, man...he was INSATIABLE🤣

I truly, truly loved Monty and Lark together and I'd go as far as to say that Monty is def one of my top 5 favorite fictional men so far! Overall, this was an awesome read with literally no drama and double standards. Such a healthy relationship with a truly understanding, caring, kind, patient and loving hero who time and time again showed that he would always be there for his woman and that she was it for him. I'm ashamed to say that I nearly wept with joy while reading about Monty's character. All I'm gonna say is...in a (fictional) world full of hoes, be a Monty😇

safety squad:
- no OW/OM drama
- no cheating/sharing
- virgin hero (H has kissed a total of 3 women, one being because of a dare in 8th grade and the other two on the cheek. H has been on a few dates but they never turned into second dates - I'm assuming this was before he met the h. He never did anything sexual/never felt any lust/anything romantic for any other woman before the h nor did he have any interest. Just one instance when he asked a girl to prom in HS because he kinda liked her but she rejected him and made fun of him. H has never had a gf/been in a relationship before)
- inexperienced h (h had only been with one man prior to the H and lost her virginity to him. kind of an arranged relationship since their families ran in the same circle and thought it would be good for them to date. she was engaged to OM but broke it off after she realised that she never really loved him. h was in a relationship with OM way before she met the H. h had been celibate for months prior to finally getting tg with the H. OM doesn't cause any drama)
- accidental pregnancy
- pining (H has loved the h for years but didn't do anything because he thought she was in love with her ex)
- "it's always been you"
- best friends to lovers
- HEA

History h — Lark had only been with one guy (ex fiancé) whom she broke up with around 20%. They’ve been drifting apart the last year, and it was expected of their parents for them to get married. They barely talk or even touch, and she hasn’t had sex in 6-7 months, and she never had good sex. Her fiancé leaves for a business trip in the beginning, so he isn’t around much. During the breakup, they both say they don’t love each other anymore and haven’t for a while. He doesn’t pop back up until the very end when he hears about the pregnancy and calls to congratulate her.

History H — Monty had only kissed one girl. It was in eighth grade as a dare. He went on a few first dates and only kissed them on the cheek.

𝓜𝔂 𝓣𝓱𝓸𝓾𝓰𝓱𝓽𝓼:

This book was tearing me apart the first bit of it. Having to read all the thoughts going through Monty’s head on how he wishes he’d been good enough or tried harder for Lark 😖😭

It was a little annoying that it took her so far into the book (yes, I’m counting 20% as far) to break up with her fiancé. I was expecting it to happen in the first few chapters, not the 9th one. She also mentioned her ex quite a bit when she was with Monty. If the roles were reversed, I know I’d hate it.

Monty is a literal angel. He can do no wrong! He handled everything so perfectly. Also, for once, a virgin H doesn’t know what he’s doing, and he asks her to teach him?! 🤭

I felt like I was waiting for something to happen (idk what), but nothing ever did, and everything was smooth sailing. It felt a little drawn out, and I did get bored at times. I also thought the accidental pregnancy was going to be the main plot, not the last 30%.

In the end, this was such a cute, wholesome, and Hallmarky read 💗

Thank you to Sophie Andrews for sharing my name with Julia because then Julia emailed me and told me about her book and sent me a copy and AHHH!! I couldn't have known about this book if it wasn't for Sophie. So thank you ♡

What sold me this book was the accidental pregnancy trope definitely. But it does have other tropes that I usually also love like hero who 24/7 pins after the heroine, Golden Retriever coded hero, sports romance, and so on. It's definitely a book for me so I was so excited to start it!! It went by so fast, like I couldn't stop reading it after I started. The first day I read it, I reached 75% in the book immediately.

The book is soft, low on the angst, and very chill. I think many would say that basically nothing really happens, like a big obstacle or problem. Personally, I love those type of books where they are just figuring out their relationship without any outside force messing it up. If you know me though, you know I'm a big third-act breakup enthusiast. I'm always craving one lmao. But I believe this fits the book perfectly actually! The pace is good and it doesn't need a third-act breakup at all.

Dan adores Lark very early on so he's already half in love with her at the beginning and you know it. The thing is Lark has to catch up and it takes a bit more time, but not that long either hehe. They're clearly meant for each other and you can easily see it. It's so fun to see their relationship develop and how great their communication is with each other, they're always open to sharing what they feel and think.

"I'll always be here for you, Birdie. You and little bird. You're my whole life, you know that."

Some scenes just made me weak in the knees⊹₊⟡⋆ For example, when Lark tells Dan she's pregnant with his baby, she's so scared to tell him mainly because a bit ago he said he's not ready to have kids. But when she tells him, he drops to his knees, kisses her belly, and says hi to the baby IMMEDIATELY. He's so happy and can't wait to be a dad.

Domestic scenes, trusting each other, no third-act breakup, Catch Her Heart is perfect for the readers who want something calm, relaxing, steamy, and 100% romantic.

- Always been you (and a damn good one!)
- Friends to lovers
- Baseball player
- Hero virgin
- He has tattoo of her

So cute and low on drama.

He has loved her forever, and it’s the perfect “always been you” book. He is a V, mostly because he was a nerd growing up, but after he met her a couple of years ago, he never wanted anyone else.

She is engaged but discoveres quickly that she doesn’t love him anymore, and ends things at 20%.

The story from there focuses on them navigating their relationship from friends to lovers. He has always loved her and never anyone else had crossed his mind, so he needs some time to understand that she’s finally his. She also needs time since she just got out of a long relationship and doesn’t want to rush things before she’s completely ready for it. Really liked the way we would see how they were together.

Safety:
- He a virgin. Only kissed one girl in high school, but never anything more.
- He tried dating but never more than one date, because it never felt right. Not a lot of first dates either.
- She ends her engagemen, no drama from ex
- No owd/omd/cheating or sharing

SPOILERS!
He was so sweet when they discovered the pregnancy!!

Yet another romance fail!

Heroine gives her body, her trust, her sexual awakening, her vulnerability, her innocence to another man. She gives all those irreplaceable primal gifts to another man, NOT the hero. The hero gets to know she spread her legs and let another man crawl between them. He gets to know that when she remembers her first time, its the face of an other man grunting and heaving and sliming all over her. He gets to know he’s getting sloppy seconds, that a deep and intimate and primal part of her WILL
ALWAYS BELONG to another man and it will never ever be his!

GTFOH with this putrid pig shit BS.

This friends to lovers and surprise pregnancy romance wasn’t for me. I liked the characters Dan aka Monty and Lark. Also their friends Willow and Rafe to name few were great too. Sadly the connection between me and the story wasn’t there. Primarily because I felt there wasn’t any chemistry between the couple. I had hoped the surprise pregnancy happened sooner than it did. The writing and dialogue were just not my jam. Cringing at times. I had hoped a hero pining for his bestie would be a winner sadly there were too many factors that didn’t work.

This was a cutie little baseball, best-friends to lovers, it’s always been you, accidental pregnancy romance where he’s been pinning over her for years but he’s respected her boundaries while she was dating a major dickhole.

There were moments where my eyes glazed over a bit or I skimmed because of some excess lovey dovey scenes or descriptors but it definitely had some good moments!

The fuck it moment was a slay heh

Girly pop threw a tantrum because the players she works with don't flirt and treat her and her work with respect (not to mention that this woman has been dating for YEARS and has got recently engaged with said boyfriend while one of the dudes has also been secretly pinning for her for YEARS). Life's hard I guess😓

Dan, aka Monty, and Lark’s best friends to lovers romance is so, so sweet! I loved these two so much.

⚾️Best friends to lovers
⚾️Baseball romance
⚾️Player x trainer
⚾️Virgin MMC
⚾️He falls first

Dan and Lark have been friends for years but never took it to the next level because Lark was in a relationship. When that relationship is no more, Lark’s mind is instantly seeing Dan in a new light. She is finally seeing what has always been in front of her.

Dan has been in head over heels love with Lark for awhile. And he is finally getting his shot at a HEA.

These two are so sweet together and their relationship just works. They are the missing piece to one another’s puzzle.

Tim Paige and Victoria Connolly do a great job with the narration of these characters. Tim brought out the innocent Dan and Victoria brought out the sweet and caring Lark.

Looking forward to the next book in this series!

Thank you to the author and Home Cooked Books for the ALC.

This was another home run in the Vancouver Tridents baseball series that has a moving, emotional and SPICY friends to lovers romance with:

a Virgin MMC
a surprise pregnancy and
lots of open communication

Excellent on audio narrated by Victoria Connolly and Tim Paige and highly recommended for fans of authors like Meghan Quinn, Maren Moore or Tessa Bailey.

Many thanks to the author and @homecookedbooks for a complimentary ALC in exchange for my honest review!

“Being friends with Lark is both the easiest, most natural thing in my life, and the most heartbreaking. Have you ever tried to convince yourself not to love the one woman who’s ever caught your attention? And I do mean ever?”
⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🌶️🌶️

Those who have been here for a while know that I don't often read Accidental Pregnancy, but Catch The Heart is the perfect example of this trope done well! I really loved Monty (Dan) and Lark's friends-to-lovers story. Dan is possibly the sweetest MMC I've ever read, a walking green-flag, golden retriever that we all wish existed in real life. Their story is low angst with very little conflict. It's a comfort read with a super swoony MMC that would go to any lengths for his girl and some yummy steamy scenes woven in.

When we first meet the pair, Lark is engaged to another man and Dan is the oldest virgin the major leagues, quietly pining for his best friend. Despite her doubts leading up to her wedding, he continues to be the supportive friend that Lark can rely on for anything. But when she breaks off her engagement, Dan seizes his chance to prove to her that he can be the man of her dreams. Little do they know, another twist is coming around the bend when two little pink lines appear 💕

I really LOVED that the end of Lark's engagement was not overly angsty! It was so refreshing to see them split amicably, which is very underrepresented in romance books! We always want to vilify the ex, but Julia showed it doesn't have to be that way (it can just be the wrong guy for her). Dan and Lark's unexpected pregnancy is also treated in such a careful and accepting way, never treated as a mistake, which made it so easy for me to read (no anxiety for this accidental pregnancy nervous nellie)

The amount of charm and swoony gestures found in this book, along with a sprinkling of great spicy scenes, made this such a fun baseball romance to read!

Officially obsessed with this book, my favorite book of this series! 💕 Dan & Lark have completely stolen my heart! Dan has been secretly in love with Lark forever, but he stayed in the friend zone while she was in a relationship. When she finally breaks free, Dan steps up, like the absolute sweetheart he is, to be there for her. But let’s be real… the tension was bound to explode into something more.

I really enjoyed their journey. Dan had his insecurities that made him afraid he wouldn’t be good enough. Emotionally, Lark went from seeing Dan as a friend to being the love of her life. Lark now is seeing things with new eyes and is trying to figure out how she didn’t always see that her true love was right there. Dan is a virgin and getting to have his first time being with the person he loves more than anything made it so special for him. I loved them together, they just fit together so perfectly.

A surprise pregnancy definitely rushes their new relationship but they couldn’t be more ready. I love how all in they were.

Tim Paige and Victoria Connolly did an amazing job with the narration. The characters were brought to life and were easy to listen to, easy to follow along with.

Ever read a romance and think that 'What if all this drama was handled like an actual adult', well...I give you this book.

I loved that all the drama in this story is handled in a realistic way. Nothing is blown out of proportion and everything works out pretty easily. That could be why the story didn't quite grab me. Everything was almost too easy.

The relationship between Lark and Dan was so cute. Dan had such great self control and was patient for Lark. I also like seeing an inexperienced MMC that talked to the FMC about what to do.

Overall, this story wasn't the best but is a great palette cleanser when you just need something to go right.

Catch Her Heart | 🩷⚾️🥹

“But I am here. With a man I can’t stop smiling around. Who seems so dang happy to just be with me.”

4.5✨

My hearrtttttttt🥹😭 This book was so sweet, so easy to read, and genuinely fulfilling. I’m not usually one to fall for friends-to-lovers romances, but I loved that this one didn’t drag out the trope. Their relationship started to build naturally, which made me love it even more because it focused on them truly getting to know each other (and get to know each other they did 😏).

One of my favorite parts? The family redemption arc. There was one character giving serious villain vibes for about 80% of the story, but by the end? My heart was so warm with their turnaround. It was the perfect shift for the direction of the book 🥹

And Monty’s absolute adoration for Lark? GOALS 🙂‍↕️🥹

This series has been full of fantastic reads so far. If you’re into baseball romances… well, batter up! ⚾️😉

Dual narration- the narrators do an amazing job bringing this story and it’s characters to life

Dan is a catcher for the Tridents, and a 29 yr old virgin. He’s been in love with his best friend Lark for years. She has a boyfriend and Dan has been respectfully pinning for Lark in secret… or he thoughts was a secret. He calls her Birdie

Lark is a trainer for the Tridents and recently got engaged to her long time boyfriend. She is questioning their relationship and slowly realizing she might have feelings for Dan.

This is a sweet and heartwarming story about two friends who fall in love.

I’ll read any book with a virgin hero because I’ve just read too many virgin heroine ones 😅

This book was super low angst if you’re into that. Even with Lark having a fiancee in the beginning, there was never a huge amount of tension.

I do think once they got together it was a little boring and could’ve used a conflict or two. But if you want an easy read with a pining hero and then a happy couple, you’ll like this!

This one made me nervousssss going in.

I enjoy a "the guy is a virgin" trope now and again - but we're jumping from that directly into surprise pregnancy and

I'm confessing this now - I only read this because I LIKED Monty in the first 2 books. And because I want to get to Darling's book and I just can't bring myself to skip around in a series.

So let's begin at the beginning.

I love the friendship between Lark and Monty. I love that we get to see how supportive he is of her even when she's with another man. And I love that while he pines, he's not jealous or possessive in that toxic macho way some men can be.

I also like the way the breakup is handled between Lark and Baron. There's no toxicity there either, really. They just don't love each other anymore. Do I wish it happened sooner and not 20% of the way through the story? Yes. But it is what it is.

I also love that Lark is understanding, patient, kind and doesn't embarrass Monty about his inexperience. It's evident that she cares about the man long before their clothes come off.

Jarrett's finally figured out how to incorporate real human emotion and depth in a relationship and I do think this is done pretty well.

This whole book is sugary sweet. It's all warm-fuzzies and charm and special goodness. There's no drama, no angst, no third-act breakup. We're just watching two incredible friends become lovers, and then parents together.

That being said, it was a little difficult to read the sexy stuff between them at first. At once, it's super sweet, and probably kind of realistic - if these 2 people were teenagers.

And while I get that Monty's never done ANYTHING with a woman (suspend your disbelief people, I don't think this scenario is IMPOSSIBLE, just highly unlikely) in 28 years, there's something about the way it's written that makes both him and Lark sound like they're 16 and just fumbling around trying to suss out what feels good.

Has he never watched porn? Never listened to locker room talk? Never read a book? He doesn't know the FIRST THING about kissing a woman or touching her or... anything?

While I definitely didn't expect him to just be great at everything right away - there's a fine line you have to walk when writing stories like this - between a man discovering sex for the first time, and it turning into a weird cringe-fest nobody wants to read about because the characters read so young you end up lowkey feeling like a sicko.

As I said. It's sweet. But these people are almost 30. And they haven't been living under a rock, as far as I can tell.

And while I appreciate Jarrett taking us through the experiences slowly (Read: over multiple sessions), it's the tiny things that just make me grimace.

Like Lark describing giving him a blowjob like "his musky taste isn't so bad..."

Well, good. I guess. I'm glad it's just "not so bad".

That's super sexy. I'm totally into it. Not.
Forgive me for wanting the spice in my romance books to be more than just "not so bad". Eugh.

Once we get past this though? There's just not a lot going on in this story. It's just. Happy happy joy joy good vibes all around.

And yay, I'm happy for them and all but come on. There was so much room for SOMETHING to go down.

The pregnancy doesn't really even come into play until 70% of the way through the story - not how I expected a surprise pregnancy trope to go (and this isn't necessarily a bad thing for me, someone who doesn't particularly like or care about such things).

I can't help but feel like the pregnancy wasn't really a necessary part of this story. I feel like much of it got glazed over. All of the drama that could have come about during those 9 months...completely lost to us.

We even get the ex coming back at the end to congratulate Lark on her pregnancy like a good guy.

Lastly, I can't go without mentioning this. The similarities between this series and Tomforde's Windy City series are sometimes uncomfortable. The book covers are one thing - but here we're dealing with names and professions, too. MONTY. And the FMC's last name being MILLER. Then we add in that she works on the medical staff for a baseball team as a physical therapist - and this man has been pining after her for AGES.

You're never gonna convince me that Jarrett hasn't read Tomforde's books, that's all I'm saying.

So listen. From a writing standpoint, I feel like this is the best Jarrett's given us so far. These people feel like actual humans with actual emotions and at least as far as the relationship is concerned, the emotional depth is there.

It's just never challenged so I can't really tell you how strong they are. because everything's perfect from 20% in when the two are finally free to get together.

I think you'll enjoy this if you JUST want a sweet, cheesy, kinda cringy lovey-dovey story with zero angst or drama. If you just want to watch two cute people do cute things together while being cute - this is your book.

But if you actually kinda want stuff to happen in your stories? If the major tropes don't at all appeal to you? Maaaaaybe miss this one.

Sweet, safe, slightly boring. Pretty much drama free and easy read. I'd recommend this as a good pallet cleanser if you're into reading dark stuff and you're looking for something easy and sweet to break it up. It was a little too sweet for me and I kept waiting for something exciting to happen but it never did.

Quick Stats:

Format: eBook and Audiobook.

Narrators: 🎙️ Victoria Connolly and Tim Paige.

Narration Style: 🎧 Dual.

Whispersync: ✅ Yep.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Plot 💭:

Dan Montgomery might be a pro baseball player, but off the field? He’s the team’s quiet, secretly-swoony nice guy… and yep, still a virgin.

He’s also completely, head-over-heels in love with Lark, his best friend, his team’s trainer, and the woman who has no idea he’s been lowkey obsessed with her for years.

When Lark’s engagement implodes and she starts seeing Dan in a new light, the shift is electric. One kiss changes everything, and suddenly their friendship is headed straight into steamy, uncharted territory.

But just when things are finally clicking, a surprise pregnancy turns their slow burn into something serious. Now they’ve got to figure out if their friendship can become a forever kind of love.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Audiobook 🎧:

Victoria Connolly delivers Lark’s voice with warmth and confidence. She gives just the right amount of emotion without ever tipping into melodrama. And Tim Paige as Dan? Swoony, 'golden retriever energy' perfection.

The dual narration works beautifully here. The tone, pacing, and transition between the narrators kept me fully hooked. Definitely one to listen to if you want that immersive, emotional vibe.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sizzle Scale:

Warm: 🌶️ 3/5 - This one takes its time, but when the heat hits, it hits. There’s tenderness, tension, and a real sense of intimacy. Nothing over the top, just right for the emotional payoff.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bookish Bite:

This book is comfort romance in cleats. Dan is an absolute gem. He's kind, thoughtful, and fiercely loyal. He’s not the brooding alpha type, but don’t let the sweet smile fool you: he knows exactly how to make your heart race. Lark is strong, capable, and independent, but watching her slowly realise that maybe her best friend is actually her soulmate? Ugh. So satisfying.

There’s no messy drama, no miscommunication trope, and no unnecessary angst. Just two people falling for each other in the most genuine, softest way. And the surprise pregnancy? Handled with maturity and care, without hijacking the romance.

Honestly, if you’re in the mood for something warm, real, and just a little swoony, this one knocks it out of the park.

Out of the 3 books, this one was sugary sweet! I honestly loved how the couple themselves had no drama! Lark and Monty (Dan) were adorable friends turned to lovers. They fit together perfectly, and Monty and his desire to learn Lark's body is adorable. He gains his confidence quickly! He really loves Lark with his while heart and does everything he can to show her!
Catch Her Heart is a light, easy read. I did have a hang-up with the book, and I just needed a little more drama. Now, don't get me wrong. I really enjoyed when a couple is just able to be a couple, and they fit together seamlessly. There is something extremely special when a couple gets together and they are a couple. Boom done. There isn't a back and forth. So the no drama in that sense is really nice. But myswlf personally feel there needs to be drama coming at them amd they face it together, and for this story, there really wasn't a lot of that.
However, like I said. I still liked the book and enjoyed it. It was cute, and if you just came off of reading something heavy, this is a good one to help palette cleanse. It's a great listen.

Oh my gosh, Tim and Victoria did an outstanding job. They captured their personalities and brought Lark and Monty to life. I fully enjoyed them!
