When devastating news brings an abrupt end to a romantic rendezvous, Livvy Holland struggles to accept the death of one of her closest mentors. Livvy’s artwork has always been an expression of her emotions, and avoiding the pain she feels from her recent loss makes painting seem impossible. Her inspiration gone, she devotes her attention to the future she’s planning with Jon Scott.
Blissfully happy in her own denial, all of Livvy’s free time has been given to the boy she’s always loved. Facing grown up decisions, she finds it hard to live up to her parents’ expectations of her as a daughter and an artist. Under her father’s constant scrutiny and persistent surveillance from curious paparazzi, Livvy finds it difficult to maintain the adult relationship she’s begun with Jon.
The changes in Livvy are evident to those closest to her, and a few that were once her allies begin to interfere with her personal life. This newfound attention – along with distractions that take Jon’s attention elsewhere – cause Livvy to question all the choices she’s made: what college she’ll attend, what man she should be with, and what she thought was her life’s purpose.
Livvy faces her greatest challenge when Jon’s unanticipated plans derail her own. Overwhelmed, confused, and longing to satisfy her own wants and needs, Livvy must endure more heartache before finding herself.
This book is intended for mature teens and adults.
I have had the privilege of reading an ARC copy of Olivia and I ABSOLUTELY LOVED, LOVED, LOVED it!!!! Olivia is the 2nd book in the Choisie series by Lori Otto. This book had me from chapter one and I couldn’t stop until I had too… the end. I cannot wait for the next book; I NEED more Livvy and Jon!!!! This truly is a beautiful series about young love and life told through the eyes of a young girl It’s the next journey for Livvy and Jon… will their young love prevail against life and it’s occurrences or are they just too young for it to stand the test of time? There are times in this book where the moments between them were so intense that I could feel their love for each other deep in my bones. I think theirs is a true love, though they are young, their feelings for each other are most definitely real. The only problem… they are so young and have yet to live life and gain experiences that will help them in their relationship. That is what this book is all about, in this particular journey, Livvy is struggling with who she is… she has ran into a void with painting and is dealing with a loss so strong that the idea of painting in itself almost destroys her, and without that who is Livvy really? She immerses herself into her relationship with Jon, partly for a distraction and partly because she can’t do anything else, why would she want to. But in the end… she must face herself through her painting to find herself again because she is lost and confused without it.
As always, Lori Otto does NOT disappoint. "Olivia", the second book in the Chosie series, is just as good, if not better than book 1 "Contessa". In "Olivia", Livvy and Jon's story continues with Livvy suffering the loss of her Granna. She loses her inspiration to paint and spends all her time with Jon. But, as in all love stories, "things" happen and Livvy is devastated.
This will be another series you won't be able to put down.
If Lori L. Otto continues to remain an undiscovered gem of a writer it will be beyond understanding. Her writing style is so realistic, you feel the characters intimately. Just Amazing.
5++ take your breath away stars!!! Wow - Lori you have done it again! I was lucky enough to get an ARC copy of this book and to say that I loved it would be an understatement! This is the second book in the Choisie series by Lori Otto.
This is the story of Livvy and Jon, their young love, and the triumphs and struggles along the way. I was invested in their story from the first chapter and literally could not put it down - luckily I had my husband to take care of the kids while I was in my reading frenzy! :) At times it was hard for me to remember how young these characters are because it is very clear that their love for each other is real and runs deep. What they feel for each other is so intense and you can actually FEEL their emotions coming off the pages. As a reader, I felt every emotion along the way with the characters - happiness, sadness, disappointment, heartbreak - you name it, I felt it. There were so many twists and turns that I never knew what was coming next, even when I thought I had things figured out.
At it's core this is about a girl who has lost who she is and her journey to get that back. My heart broke for her and what she had to go through but in the process, I saw Livvy mature and grow and become the young woman we all knew was in there. I can't say enough about this author and about this book. I will be waiting on pins and needles for the next book in the series.........
I loved this story.. Once again, Lori made me feel every emotion, sorrow, anger, happines, humor and love. I felt like screaming and yelling one minute only to be pulled back in from the edge and want to hug them. I found myself in emotional turmiol with some characters. One minute I like them and next I wanted to smack them. I am still reeling from all the events that took place in Olivia. Lori Otto did a great job developing the characters and bring them to life in Olivia. She depicted a teenager girl and the relationship with her parents masterfully, sometimes making the story hit very close to home.
Which is my favourite book by Lori L. Otto? It's the Lori L. Otto book I'm reading at the time.
Olivia continues the story of Livvy Holland, begun in the first book of the Choisie Series, Contessa. Ms Otto deftly shows the growth of Livvy into a mature and responsible adult, the growth in Livvy's relationship with her parents, her dad in particular, and the growth in Livvy and Jon's relationship.
Not everything is smooth sailing though. Livvy has to come to terms with a type of loss she's never had to face before and in the process she loses a part of herself. This crisis in Livvy's life, and her dealing-by-not-dealing is woven throughout the book, so that it's always there even if it's not obvious. Which is exactly how Livvy is experiencing it as well. Once again Lori Otto pulls the reader into the life of her characters so that you feel as if you are the one experiencing all the good, bad, happy, sad, silly, stupid and unforeseen things that happen in the story. And there are plenty of each and more.
Lori Otto writes people as they are. Real people. There is perhaps no huge drama or mystery or angsty romance, but it's life. The relatively small personal dramas and mysteries and romances feel as life altering as if they were happening to you. Lori writes people stories, not crime or fantasy or erotica. Just the lives of everyday people who you come to feel are people you know. You become invested in these characters and the choices they make. You feel happy and sad with them. You feel proud of and cross with them. And at the end of each book you want to know where the next stage of their lives will take them.
Olivia is no different. You will finish this book wanting to know where the next book will take Livvy. I can't wait!
* Note to readers - Olivia is the 2nd book in the Choisie series (the spin-off of Emi Lost and Found) and although the series can absolutely be read alone I personally think the experience of reading it is better having read the Emi Lost and Found series.
I was given an ARC of Olivia for an honest review, and I can honestly say I loved it!! There is a slow and steady build to Lori’s stories that really works for me as a reader. I think it is through that pace that I have been able to appreciate the honesty and realness of her characters. In this continuation of Jon and Livvy’s journey the reader gets to experience young love and hard decision making. Lori has a way of allowing the reader to see all sides of the story even though it is told from Livvy’s POV and although I am neither a teen nor a parent- I find myself relating to both sets of characters. Whether or not it’s intentional on Lori’s part I always find myself thinking about life’s little lessons throughout her books. Whether it’s finding the strength to persevere through tough times, appreciating the love around you, or realizing that personal growth doesn’t happen overnight – I’m happy to have been exposed to them all.
Jon and Livvy took me through so many emotions in Olivia, from heartbroken and frustrated to giddy and content, this one will leave you wanting more!!
Once again, Lori Otto did not disappoint! I had the privilege to receive an Advance Reader's Copy to read and review prior to the release date and I just finished reading. I cannot get enough of this story line! (I've read Emi: Lost & Found series 2x so far!) Lori's best quality is tugging at my emotions when I'm reading. From the opening scene I was enveloped in the story- I don't want to give anything away! The story (and series) is so much like real-life with sadness, tragedy, confusion, choices, love, loss, etc that I just relate to the characters and their personal lives. Wonderful book series, definitely worth reading again and again! Thank you Lori for another amazing story!!
The phrase, “do not judge a book by its cover” conveys that one should not form an opinion on someone or something based purely on what is seen on the surface, because after taking a deeper look, the person or thing may be very different than what was expected. In the case of Olivia, you should absolutely judge it by its cover because it is as much a beauty as the story written inside.
Lori L. Otto impressed the pants out of me in her Emi Lost and Found series (my review here) and continues to do so in Olivia. This is the second book in the Choisie series where we follow Olivia Holland’s journey to self discovery. There was an underlying emotion in every surface Lori touched on that had my eyebrows bunched together throughout the entire time I was reading this book. The way that she was able to convey each of the characters personalities was out of this world– from the biggest players, Olivia & Jon to the supporting ones like Matty & Finn. She took character development to a whole new level where I felt she lived through them making them so 3-dimensional that I felt like I was seeing them jump right out of the pages and took place right in front of me. This is what stood out to me most in Olivia and I am in absolute awe of Lori’s ability to do such a thing.
In Olivia, our female protagonist finds herself standing right on that line between childhood and adulthood. You feel the struggle that she goes through in every scene and in every dialogue. The author drives this across incredibly well. I found myself distraught over the pressure Olivia battled through; wanting to be the sensual woman for Jon while staying the sweet and innocent Contessa for her father. As a woman, I was definitely able to relate– how many of us went through our awkward phases? Finding that perfect balance between enjoying our childhood but fighting through the foreign feelings of turning into a woman- both physically and emotionally? Amidst all this, I couldn’t imagine being a billionaire’s daughter whose actions are constantly being judged under a microscope and when the public is waiting in bated breath for that perfect misstep to crucify you in tabloid papers and websites. And boy, does she have a lot of missteps and the biggest of all is her inability to pick up a paint brush caused by a “Lori Otto” trademarked, punch in the gut story line. This book really digs deep at Livvy’s expense.
And while Olivia struggles through finding herself, Jon I felt has built a solid foundation for himself. In Contessa (my review here), I felt a bit of distrust for Jon– there was just something that put me off; it may have been how forward he was with Livvy and his disregard for Jack’s and Emi’s concern about his relationship with their 15 year old daughter but whatever it was, completely disintegrated in this follow-up. Again, Lori’s keen ability in her character development, made me feel and understand what Jon’s intentions were. This man who had been forced to quickly grow up and set aside his childhood, fully embraces who he is because of it. Jon breaks through the socioeconomic stereotypes; he is unbelievably worldly for someone who had never traveled outside of his hometown.
“I looked at myself, and started working to be the best person that I-alone-could be. I was immediately happier, and then, any time anything good happened, it was that much better, more pure. Because I was already happy with myself.”
Though Jon’s easy, good guy demeanor is undeniable, Lori also shows us a very sexy and domineering side to him. With his raging hormones in full force alongside a new found freedom, Jon understandably craves physical contact in all forms, anywhere. I was mesmerized with this side of him that I was embarrassingly salivating over him.
“I’m not sorry,” he whispers, then shakes his head. “I want the taste of you…” He pauses and nods just so, making sure I fully understand what he’s implying. “…on my lips.”
Olivia was heavily loaded in comparison to the first book of this series and I loved it. I love the direction that Lori took with Livvy and Jon; giving her readers the chance to boldly and fully experience the ups and downs that both go through as a couple as well as the challenges that both experience within themselves– whether it be Olivia’s battle with finding who Olivia Holland really is to Jon’s never ending responsibilities towards his family which could ultimately lead him to have to choose between the life he’s greatly worked hard for and the future he’s always dreamed of. Lori takes her time laying all of the ground work for her readers, successfully relaying every ounce of emotions she meant for her characters in each page of this book.
I am fully invested in this series and I felt such pride for Olivia at the end of this book. I am excited to see THE Olivia Holland– the woman breaking through her sheltered life, the woman who I know will have such incredible prowess once she has discovered who she truly is outside of being Jack and Emi Holland’s daughter and outside of being Jon Scott’s girlfriend.
The smirk she wears in the painting is one I saw often. It was a challenging look, one that compelled me to look deeper into myself. It was the one that helped to show me who Livvy Holland really was. Who she is.
This book is a deserving 5-star read and I recommend that you pick this up as soon as possible. The writing is superb and I assure you too will come out of this utterly impressed and grateful to have judged the book by its cover.
So where do I start? And what can I say? Other than how BRILLIANT Lori is and how awesome this book is!!! I was lucky to get an arc of Olivia and OMG I love it! I found myself hooked to the book since page 1 and I kept holding my breath without notice it, because it IS Lori we are talking about after all and she always does stuff that would knock you out of your heels; because she's that good.
Olivia is the second book of the Choise Series and this time we can see how our Livvy becomes a mature young women and is struggling to find herself and figure out what she wants to do with her life. Now that she seems lost after facing the lost of a very influence in her life, her mentor, and the lack of inspiration for the thing that she loves to do more than anything.
The book is great, once again you make the Lori has the power to make the reader felt so close to the characters that I feel like they are real and I really love them. This books has everything: humor, drama, romance, tragedy, action,LOVE...everything! It is like being in a great roller coaster or watching a really good movie!!!
This is a "must read" you guys won't regret. I can't wait for the next book to come!!!
Ahhh, this story was ah-mazing! It played out like a movie in my head as I read. There is nothing like young uninhibited love. All of those “firsts” that you experience, the butterflies, blushes and those overwhelming feelings. Lori Otto did such an amazing job continuing Livvy’s story and accurately portraying her life as a 17 year old, in love, handling school, her art and of course her parents. Jack and Emi are such a large part of her life and maybe sometimes too much for Livvy. I loved seeing Jack being such a devoted father during such a difficult time watching his little girl transition into womanhood. They continue to guide her, but also allowing her some freedoms to make her own decisions but within boundaries. Watching Livvy grow, mature and continue to find her way was great. There’s no crazy drama, just a well written story that will have you reminiscing and feeling the love, confusion, angst, and humor.
Lori Otto is best known for her Emi Lost & Found series – a series about the life of Emi Hennigan, including a prequel and three of the most beloved and heartbreaking novels that I have ever read. If you have not yet read the Emi Lost & Found series, I highly recommend it! Be sure to read Not Today, But Someday, Lost & Found, Time Stands Still and Never Look Back – in that order – before beginning the spin-off Choisie series.
Lori Otto introduces her readers to a charming young lady named Olivia Sophia Holland in the Emi Lost & Found series. The novels of the Choisie series center on the life of Olivia Holland. They are titled Contessa, Olivia and Livvy. I would like to express my appreciation to Lori Otto for the opportunity to review an advanced reader copy of the second novel of her series – Olivia – in exchange for my honest review.
Olivia Holland is a sixteen year-old high school senior at the beginning of Olivia, having skipped a year ahead in high school. We are told that her Granna (Donna) passed away while Olivia was out of the country. Olivia was commissioned to paint a portrait of Donna prior to her death. The portrait was to hang next to the portrait Olivia had already painted of Donna’s son, Nate. Donna was always a positive force for Olivia. She was her teacher and mentor, encouraging Olivia to discover her creativity and to grow as an artist. Olivia knows that she disappointed her Granna because she had not finished her portrait prior to her death. She feels incredible grief and guilt, which results in her loss of direction and incentive to paint. Olivia also does not want to move on to other projects until she has finished Donna’s portrait. She loses sight of many things that are important to her – her artwork, education and the relationship she has with her father and family.
Olivia’s artwork has always defined a part of who she is. Without her art, she becomes absorbed in her relationship with Jon. He becomes the primary focus of her spare time. At the beginning of the novel, Jon is eighteen and beginning his freshman year of college at Columbia. He has his own struggles in Olivia. His mother and brothers are extremely important to him. Jon has accepted a role as a father-figure to his brothers because they have no father in the picture. Jon attends college classes and attempts to maintain his grades, while also hoping to give his brothers some stability at home. Their mother is an alcoholic. When she loses custody of his younger brothers, the boys are eventually placed in the custody of their aunt in Utah.
Olivia and Jon have grown up together. They have a very tangible love for each other, but they are both very young. Jon gave Olivia a promise ring in Contessa – they are both extremely young to be involved in the type of emotional and physical relationship they have found themselves in. At times, Olivia can be bratty and self-destructive, whereas, I felt that Jon had matured quite a bit in this novel. Although Jon obviously loves Olivia, his primary focus is on his family and studies. He is willing to sacrifice his teenage freedom to provide for his brothers. Jon realizes that Olivia is still very self-centered and not mature enough to handle the serious type of relationship that they have. I believe he understands that Olivia needs to experience life and grow as an individual before they can make a serious commitment to each other.
I found the character growth in this novel to be brilliantly written. It makes perfect sense that Jon would be more responsible and self-sacrificing; not only is he older, but he has experienced a harder life. Olivia has always had what she needed. She has wonderful parents, but they have micromanaged her life to protect her from the press, paparazzi and people that would take advantage of their family wealth. It is very obvious that Olivia has some growing up to do. I want to commend Lori Otto for writing the perfect ending to Olivia. I have no doubt that great things are ahead for Jon and Olivia in the final novel in the series, Livvy. Five outstanding stars for Lori Otto’s Olivia!
First I'll start by saying that I rarely write books reviews. Not because I don't want to, but simply because i read so many books it's difficult to find the time. But sometimes you simply have to make the time for the things you feel are important. I'm a huge fan of Lori L. Otto. She really does not get the recognition she deserves, I mean...WHY AREN'T MORE PEOPLE RAVING ABOUT THESE BOOKS? I was introduced to her writing during the Emi Lost and Found Series (which I HIGHLY recommend). Sometimes an author is blessed with the gift to create characters that immediately capture, ravish and then rebuild your heart. Her writing style evokes such a magnitude of emotions that by the end you are left unwilling to let go. She creates characters that are unforgettable. The kind of characters you would love to check in with every now an then just to see how they are doing. That's what EVERY book I've read by this author has done. Olivia was introduced to us in the Emi Lost and Found Series. In Contessa we got to witness Olivia's journey of self discovery which included an unhealthy obsession of a artist from her mothers past, emend her relationship with her father and experience first love. Now, a tragic and unexpected event has Olivia continuing this journey. It was heartbreaking and heartwarming same time. I could not put this book down...and I didn't want to. The author portrayed the emotions in this book so colorful and descriptively that I felt every emotion right along with them. I can't wait for the release of Dear Jon and Livvy.
I had the pleasure of being an ARC for Olivia! Being a teenage girl myself, I can really appreciate the message portrayed in this book.I most appreciate that she is not afraid to hold back. This is the real deal. All of these thoughts and feelings are completely real. A teenage love story is a classic, and it seems to never change. This one though is the farthest from cliche- it is cut and dry, real emotions. We teenage girls, especially of this day and age, feel these things everyday. Lori Otto never ceases to amaze me; the way she can transform her point of view from Livy's parents in the earlier series( Emi lost and Found) to a naive teenage girl looking for love in the Choisie Series is truly a work of art. She is talented beyond belief and this book shows exactly what her words are capable of. I laughed, I cried and I was ready to throw punches. I can't get enough of Livy and Jon's sweet, sweet love story. From the very first page to the very last, Lori has a way of keeping you on your toes. A++!!!
Great book!!! 5 Stars ***** Olivia is the second book of the Choisie Series. This is the story of a young girl who is going through a difficult time because she lost someone very close to her.
She is experiencing first love and that's one of the things I love about this book. We feel their love and we experience their sweet, impulsive, sad and happy moments along with them.
She is at a moment in her life when she has to start making decisions on her own and they might change her life forever or not. Jon is great for her because he never tries to influence her on these decisions but they're both young so they might lose themselves in their love.
My favorite chapter was the last one because we can see her growing up very clearly and it was a great ending to everything that happened. I can't wait till the next book! ♥
I'm so in Love with this series it grabs me it's beautiful and emotional and seeing things from Livvy's perspective is eye opening.i can't explain it I don't read y/a really well regularly yet I'm so drawn to this series. The changes this family has gone through i can't form the correct words and how moving this is . Maybe again I have a 17 year old so it's so relatable .
I loved Olivia. Truly. As a whole, I truly enjoyed it. Enjoyed it soooo much, all the way up until 2:30 am. haha
It doesn't matter that I was nodding off at work the next day, or that I was yawning in a work meeting, or that I had this stupid smile on my face. My love is real for Jon... I mean this book is real.
*Screams* "I love you Jon!"
So we all know there are 2 more books in this series. This book ends on a *tiny* cliff... and we are left dangling!
Yes, Author Loi L. Otto has done it again. She hates us, right? Right? I mean why would you do this to us?
*Cries* Why?
I think I know why. Because that old adage of "Good things come to those who wait." rings true here or at least I hope it does.
Nevertheless, I'm smiling. I loved this book. The characters, the writing, the PLOT. Ah, it was all a huge jumbo ride of emotions. At times, even too much. I remember reading some parts holding my breath. Yes, its a miracle i'm still alive.
So, after all these expanse of emotions, why do I have this smile on my face? What's wrong with me?
Don't worry, I asked myself the same thing. So here is "why" I was smiling.
Even though this book ends on a cliff, all the characters make great progress in their personal journeys. My dear SWEET Jon did not fail me. I'm sad to admit I doubted him for a bit, but I have NEVER been so happy to be proven wrong. Olivia comes to a road where she has to make decisions and choices that will affect her future. Jack. Mm. Strong, silent and loving Jack. If ever there was an older man... Mm.. What was I saying? *ehm* Right. Jack. He is such a great father. Overbearing- check, strict- check, unreasonable at times- check, loves his daughter - check. (I read a review where Jacks was being criticized for the way he acts towards Olivia and her gradual growth into a young woman. To this I say, HE's a DAD! He's a Parent! I did not find it weird or annoying how involved he was with Livvys relationship with Jon and in her life in general. I found it endearing and very realistic. To be honest, I can picture myself being the same with my sons.when they grow up)
There is a moment with a *tiny* Public Service Announcement(PSA) which I appreciated. I won't say what it is, I'll just say it's very relevant in our internet age, especially for young people. Somethings are forever whether we want them to be or not once they are shared..
Also, a my TOP FAVORITE scene (and there are a lot of favs) Jon vs Jack - Office show-down. Hot damn!!! Hot damn!!! That was hot!! Jon has guts. Like he REALLY stepped it up. In the man's (Jacks) house, no less. It was rude and hot and I got bothered by it (in a good way). I was swooning and laughing and swooning. It was epic and definitely one of my favorite scenes in the book. ;)
I've read 4 books from this author and she has yet to fail me. Make that 5 books, actually. Her writing is charming, her characters charismatic and the story makes you fall in love with the lot of them.
I can't wait to read Dear Jon. He's my lifeline to Livvy. Even though she is *that* girl at times, the one we don't like, she at least gotten one thing right. She's brought Jon to us.
And have I mentioned how much I love Jon? 5+ Stars
I ask myself, "How does Lori do it?". She makes each book better than anything you would expect. This book touched my soul and made me want to call my daddy and thank jil for being so amazing.
This book is the sequel to Contessa although some time has lapsed. This book gutted me from the beginning with the loss in the family. I found myself cursing Lori for taking the last reminder of *him* away from me. Jon and Livvy's relationship progress but not without difficulty. I felt Jon would at times rush Livvy or pressure into expanding their relationship physically at the expense of lying and hiding from her family. That lost points for me. I was already skeptical of Jon and this didn't score any brownie points for him. However what I did love about Jon was that 1. He really was there for Livvy. He would do anything in the world for her and it really showed. Sometimes nothing would work, except for Jon being there. 2. I love how straight up Jon was with Jack. That definitely scored points in my book. I think it did in Jack's too. I have never disliked Jack- I just always thought Nate was better. However I really loved Jack as a father in this book. How he would always try anything to make Livvy better-even if it came to getting over himself and knowing she needed Jon. Overall, yet another 5 star read by Lori. This book made me laugh, cry, and wish there was another book immediately available.
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of Olivia and I could not put it down! Lori Otto has done it again! Written a book with such emotion that you can't help but feel so much for the characters... Love, hate, frustration, sadness, happiness...Sometimes all at the same time!!! In this book Livvy really starts to get a sense of self. She seems to understand the consequences for her actions and isn't as selfish (she still has some selfish moments- but what 17 year old doesn't!!). In "Contessa" it seemed like she did not know herself or what she wanted in life... You definitely see a change in Livvy in "Olivia" and she stands up for herself in a more mature way as she struggles to find her path. Without spoilers..I think the end really needed to happen for Livvy to truly find herself... In my opinion it is the best thing for her at this current time her in life. Although heartbreaking, I think it will only make Livvy stronger! I am now anxiously awaiting the release of "Dear John" and "Livvy"!! I think Lori Otto deserves all the success in the world... All of her books are truly amazing!!!!!!

If you haven't read Lori L. Otto's books yet, DON'T WAIT ANOTHER MINUTE! I received the Advanced Readers Copy on May 27 and finished it on May 29. This is not a novella by any means...I just couldn't put it down until I was done...well after 3 a.m...and I just finished the 2nd read.
OLIVIA follows Livvy Holland as she deals with life as a 16 year old, including loss of a family member, whether to take her relationship with her boyfriend Jon to the next level, and selecting a college, but all under the watchful eye of the paparazzi.
It's like family reunion time when characters that you met in earlier books show up, including her parents Emi and Jack, and Uncles Matty, Stevie and Chris.
Lori L. Otto has a gift for creating REAL characters that you think about long after the last page has been turned.
Look up all of Lori Otto's books...great summer reading...great ANYTIME reading! Congrats to Lori L. Otto for yet another great book!
Wow, if I thought Contessa was a great book, this is an amazing book, it made me laugh, feel sad at those key situations, hell I even cried on the other scenes too. But worth every single word from this book. This story continuous where "Contessa" ended and it's a great continuation the transition Olivia has made from book one to book two is made perfectly, )I'll be clear to my point of view maybe some people may no agree with me but that's them to me it was done nicely) as well as Jon's and and the other characters, and how they are faced with life and making hard decisions and how sometimes we just can't please everyone but our selves. What more can I say with out spoiling it, tough, tough decision lol. An amazing book worth to be read you will love....IT WAS WORTH THE WAIT LORI!!!! I receive an complimentary ARC for an honest review. Well as honest and spoil free as I could!!!
I have been "chosen" to read an advanced reader copy of "Olivia" the second book in the Choisie series. Lori L. Otto did not disapoint. 'Olivia' is even better than the first in the series. The book grabs you from the first page and keeps you in suspense til the end and leaves you wanting more! I need me some more Livy and Jon! I am looking forward to the next in the series! Lori L. Otto is an amazing author that I will continue to read more of her work.
I loved this book. I kept thinking I knew what was going to happen and i was surprised. glad I didn't need my box of tissues as in the other books. I can't wait for the other books. I have grown to love this family. a must read.
I’ll just put it out there from the get go. I love Lori Otto. I love every word she has ever written. I expect to love every word she writes in the future. If you’ve read anything by her before, chances are you agree with me. The thing I love the most about Lori is that she doesn’t write JUST a novel. She doesn’t write a couple of characters that you may or may not connect with. She doesn’t pull you in and you walk away when finished. Lori builds a world. She builds a world that characters your certain must be real live in, and you’re a fly on the wall, watching their lives unravel before you. It’s not words on a page. She writes unforgettable characters with problems that all of us have gone through, in one way or another. She gives it her all, and you can feel that on every single page. So yea, I’m a fangirl.
This book. I have the biggest book hangover after reading Olivia. Have you ever read a book, and although it is sad and you might have cried for the characters, how you feel is beyond even those characters? I finished Olivia, and burst into tears. Like rolling down my cheeks, seriously crying tears. I think part of it is because it’s the first Lori Otto novel I’ve read in a long while, so to continue their story but to have new work, it was just…a lot. I think it was also partially due to the fact that Lori creates such a magical world, and I wasn’t ready for it to end yet. You know how everyone talks about how they feel after reading a new CoHo novel or whoever their favorite is? That’s me tonight.
Okay back on track. Short summary – I have to pretend that you know what Contessa was about or otherwise I’ll write pages. This series is a spin-off from the Emi Lost & Found series, but you could start Contessa as a standalone. I definitely wouldn’t dive into Olivia without having read Contessa though. You’ll be confused. Okay so…This series follows Olivia Holland and her first love, Jon. It’s about their trials and many different errors they make along the way. It’s young love at its finest. She’s the daughter of a very well-known family (Sigh - Jack) and she never has to want for anything. She’s an artist, and a fantastic one at that, especially for her age. Livvy is still a bit self-centered, but she’s learning. She’s growing. Then there’s Jon. He’s so intelligent and wise beyond his years having been the head of his household. He has big aspirations in life, and is set on seeing them through. They begin their relationship in Contessa as just young and innocent (We’ve all been 16 before. You know how much innocence goes into that) teenagers. In Olivia, you see them grow up a bit. Or a lot.
This is what happens when you throw in college choices, a loss of your hobby that was once your top priority, or the pain it feels when you lose that first love. They start making mature decisions in regard to their relationship and their future. They start seeing things in a different light than they ever had before. It’s not as simple as a few stolen kisses, and they start realizing that. Love is a lot to take, and you have to learn to stay true to yourself. It’s trying to find the balance of staying the same person you were before while looking to whom you want to become, with that person. Olivia and Jon deal with all of the above, and I loved following along to see how they would deal with each obstacle. Things may not always turn out how you maybe want them to, but you know it’s for the best for those characters. If anyone can do painful moments that you know will work out in the end? It’s Lori Otto. Geez.
I can’t even express in words how much I adore these characters. I love them all individually, but especially together. When I say “these characters”, I don’t mean only Livvy and Jon. The book is centered on them but you see A LOT of Livvy’s family, and you’ll love them all. They’re the most supportive, spectacular group of people, and I’m honestly jealous of her. I want to be a Holland. I think the biggest difference in this book versus the other romance novels you’re reading is that you feel like the parent in the story. In most of our books, we dream of our book boyfriends right? We get the stars in our eyes and wish we could have that person for a while? Okay yes, Jon is dreamy. He’s amazing. But for me, it felt more like I’m watching my children grow up. I’m experiencing all of their up’s and down’s with them. When they hurt, I hurt. When they’re in love, I’m in love with the idea of them being in love. I wanted to keep Livvy’s heart safe, even though I couldn’t. I wanted to scream at Jon for hurting her. I wanted to shake Livvy for how she acts sometimes. So in most of the novels, you pretend to be the heroine. In these, it’s much more than that.
Overall, do I even need to say how much I loved it? Just in case – I loved it. I never want to let the Holland family go, and especially Livvy and Jon. It’s painful, it’s heartbreaking, and it’s real. It hurts to read sometimes. You’ll find yourself completely in love, and immediately frustrated and angry. Lori can pull out every single emotion you can imagine feeling, and she does. Olivia is an absolutely gorgeous story of two young people trying to figure out their way in the world with or without one another. It’s got everything we want – romance, angst, humor, heartbreak, devastation. What more could you ask for, right?
Again, another wonderful book by Lori L. Otto. You just can't not love her books and her characters.
First of all, I want to say thank you to Lori for giving me the chance to read and ARC of this amazing book. <3 I loved it and I can't wait to read the next one.
In book 1, you meet Contessa, Jack Holland's little girl, only she's not a little girl anymore. She's starting to grow up, to see the world through her own eyes and like I've said before, she wants it all, even if it means she has to lie and sneak around to get it. But this second book is another story.
Olivia's life has had a lot of ups and downs since she was little, but still, she's managed to learn how to deal with those situations, sometimes making a lot of mistakes, but at the end she's done what she knows is right. There's more maturity in her and she tries to be as honest as she can, which is something I liked a lot. She's still the innocent little girl, but with more confidence.
I don't know if I'm the only one who felt this way about the book, but I still don't feel like it was just a love story. Like in book 1, in which I felt it was the story of the struggle and reconciliation between a father and his daughter, to me, Olivia is the story of growing up. Of accepting accepting and being exactly who you are, no matter how the people around you see you or want you to be. She now has to deal with two great loss, two things she loved more than anything in her life. So she starts to focus all her attention in that other thing she loves, Jon. It was her way of dealing and what she thought would help her heal, because he kept her distracted and she needed that.
Through the whole book I felt her struggle, how frustrated she was because she couldn't go back to the way she was before, some moments were more noticeable than others, and even though Jon made her completely happy, there was always something missing.
Well, first I'd like to say that in this story you see the way the characters grow. I'm the youngest to the oldest, they've all learned different life lessons that made them a lot more patient a lovable and real. The story line is a lot more capturing, not that Contessa wasn't, but this one allows you to relate more and more to with the main characters.
So, what did I think about Olivia this time? Well, she obviously grew up a lot since book 1. She's the same girl but with another perspective on life. She now knows, no doubt, how much her dad loves her, how much she means to him and her entire family. She's more confident about herself as a person and deep down, as an artist too. The only thing is, she became too dependent on Jon and their relationship, which kind of frustrated me. I feel she needs to be on her own a little, get to know herself a little bit better and experience life from her own perspective. And I think she'll get her time.
I like Jon, I really do but, even though Livvy denied he was the reason and even though I KNOW Jon would never do that on purpose, I felt he was kind of holding her back. They both need time.
I can't wait to read next book. I'm sure it will be as beautiful as all her books.
I really liked this book, I mean, of course I did. It's by Lori Freaking Otto. It was filled with all the elements I've come to expect from her novels- funny, sweet, dramatic, sexy, and at times, frustrating. Oh, and I can't forget the swoony moments either.
"You engage me and provoke me and you drive me to the brink of insanity, and just when I think I'm gone, you save me, Olivia. A brush of your hand. A Kiss. A whisper. I'd never felt so destroyed and yet so completely whole in one single moment." - Jon.
*Sigh*... Ahem, where was I? Oh yes, so I really like Jon. He's mature, responsible, and really sweet and romantic. He understands Livvy and truly loves her. However, I think she was becoming too dependent on Jon and their relationship and that hindered some aspects of her life. I had to keep reminding myself that she's young, only 17, and this is the norm for girls her age. Granted, she does mature quite a bit in this book, but she still frustrated me. Her life became centered completely around Jon and there were a few times when I wanted to slap her around a bit and knock some sense into her. Thank goodness for comic relief.
"Sexytime-with-Emi. Nope. My-favorite-tie-is-blue. Nope. "What are you doing?" "What's your password, Jacks?" Oh Matty <3
"I love you, Daddy." "I love you too, sweetheart. Who knew we should have been giving you morphine for affection all along?"
Jacks, oh Jacks. He's such an amazing father and we see that once again in Olivia, but boy does he have his hands full. I truly felt for him and Emi in this book, but Livvy and Jack's relationship has vastly improved since Contessa (Book 1). However, I really miss Jacks and Emi's POVs, and it was nice to see them at the very end of the book. Just wish they could have been sprinkled throughout this one in order to provide a different perspective. It's exhausting being in the mind of a 17 year old for an entire book. I can only imagine how Lori feels.
The ending was perfect, in my opinion. It makes me really excited for the next book because there are so many possibilities. I get giddy just thinking about them! If you haven't read anything by Lori Otto, I suggest you start from the very beginning, "Not Today, but Someday". Trust me, these characters will feel like family and you'll laugh and cry right along with them (definitely cry). Lori Otto has a fan for life with me!
"This is your smile from that night, from Mykonos. You thought the bad news took it, but you're wrong. I did. I've been keeping it safe for you."
Olivia is the second book in the new Choisie Series. It picks up right where Contessa left off so you must read Contessa first.
I want to start out saying that this book wrecked me in so many ways. I was so happy, sad, and heartbroken. Love is never easy and you really see it in this book. As it starts out in such sadness with the loss of a loved one, you find Jon supporting Olivia and never fails in showing his love for her. I think I fell more in love with him myself in this one.
Olivia and Jon are still going strong but they have so many obstacles to overcome in this book. His family has been torn apart, he’s starting college, and Olivia is trying to decide her plan for college. Does she go to Jon or venture out on her own? You can see it’s not an easy road for them from the start and it’s so hard to see them going through so much at a young age.
“He’s my heart, he’s my wings.” - Olivia
Olivia is pretty much destroyed from the beginning and has lost her desire to even paint and that’s a big factor in this book. So, when Jack gets her an agent, it turns into such an even bigger mess. Sometimes helping someone always hinders them in the end, and that is definitely what happens in this book.
My feelings for Jon were strengthened in this book and I was pulling for them to be together even when they were torn apart. They have such a strong love for someone so young, even though you can tell they both have so much growing yet to do. Lori makes you feel everything and every emotion along their bumpy road and doesn’t make it easy on your heart.
I loved Olivia but yet found myself being so mad at her. Some of the things she done brought me back to feeling how immature she is and so many times, I just wanted to slap her. She lacked compassion in the way she didn’t seem to care about others’ feelings at time and by the end I was reeling. I was so mad and left with such a book hangover that I didn’t think I would bounce back from it. A friend of mine also read it and I immediately told I wanted more.
Lori’s writing style is so unique is that she can make you feel like you are right there in the book and going through everything with them. Her writing is clean and so descriptive and that’s a very rare thing to find in an other. I have read all of her books and she is so consistent in her writing and has definitely produced that ‘wow factor with me. I may have been a late bloomer in reading some of her writing but I am definitely hooked and all I can say is that I need MORE and ASAP. This is another 5 star for me and I am impatiently waiting on more of this series!!
