To Whom It May Concern,
I'm going to sling a word by you. Just one word, two syllables.
It's a word that seems to have fallen out of fashion as of late; or, more accurately, the concept of the word instead of the word itself.
Are you ready?
Ok, good.
The word, ladies and gentlemen, is restraint.
No, I'm not talking about restraining orders, since those sure as hell aren't uncommon anymore. And, as much as I hate to disappoint the BDSM crowd, I'm not talking about leather attire with buckles and fasteners. I'm genuinely just talking about keeping things within limits.
Sure, outside of the aforementioned things that I wasn't alluding to, restraint is not a commonly used word. It certainly doesn't have much of a place in our current bundle-offer/BOGO/loyalty card/upsizing/refer-a-friend society.
Which is a shame. Because, honestly, sometimes restraint is exactly the thing that is needed in order to really create an incredible tale.
Which, IMHO, is exactly what Piece by Piece is. An incredible tale. And what makes it truly fall within the incredible category is that, despite being short, it packs a hell of a wallop. And THAT is what I am talking about when I mention restraint.
The concept of Piece by Piece, that of knowing the date of one's death, is a sound one. Uncommon enough that it's not treading over trampled ground. The additional elements that Daemon adds could have been expanded upon for a much larger work.
But...
That would have ultimately diminished the impact of the actual story being told. And said impact is important. It's arguably the crux of the whole endeavor. And so, by showing a little restraint, and executing a very tight and contained narrative, Daemon Manx has managed to make a little seem like a lot. Truly, Piece by Piece punches well above its weight, being more engaging and enjoyable than many books twice to three times as large.
Which, to me, is the mark of a great author. It takes talent to make someone care for a character in a minimal number of pages. It takes talent to tell a story that is imminently relatable to most people while keeping the word count down. But Mr. Manx does so with ease.
This is a story best kept under wraps, so you will find no spoilers here. No mentions of characters or plot points. Go into this one blind. Trust me, you'll be glad you did.
Short, sweet, and to the point, I daresay that Piece by Piece embodies the perfect short story. It's a little eerie, a little saccharine, a little heartfelt, and a little speculative, all while being a wholly unique concept. It'll get you in the feels, too.
The companion piece The Widower is a more straightforward horror offering. I like how it took cancer, which is already horrible and terrifying in its own right, and put a different spin on it. It's also a little bit of a haunted house tale, though that's all the insight I'm going to give. All in all, The Widower was a good little horror romp, and since Piece by Piece was less scary and more supernatural, it was good to see Daemon flexing his "spooky" literary muscles.
Piece by Piece is an easy recommend to just about anyone who is looking for a couple of tales that will make you think "well damn!".
