Horned Snakes and Axle Grease is the premier roadside guide to the archaeology, history and rock art of Nine Mile Canyon in central Utah. In addition to the chapters on history, archaeology and rock art, the roadside guide introduces 85 sites from the area, including maps, photographs, drawings and UTM locations. Four full-color pages and a reference section are included.
Picked this up for an afternoon exploration of Nine Mile Canyon. Perfect guide to help us see all the petroglyphs. The book has mileage information that will help you to locate the petroglyphs that are visible from the road, as well as GPS coordinates. Information about the area, the Freemont Indians and the petroglyphs themselves make this an enjoyable read as well as a guide book.
Very good guide to Nine Mile Canyon. It details 85 historical buildings, petroglyph sites and ruins of pit dwellings and granaries. We had a great time visiting about half of these sites in one day.
Some good information on the history and pre-history of Nine Mile Canyon (Utah) and its incredible pictographs. Spangler has a more recent book that I will look for. Includes a mile-by-mile guide to the rock art and other archaeological sites. Wish I'd had it in October when I was there.
The perfect book if you want to go explore 9 mile canyon just outside of price. We learned a lot of about the people that live there. It guides you to each petroglyph so you don't miss any!
